Bistro lost their fabulous Chef Johnson and has totally slipped in Menu, Food and Service. None of the fabulous ravioli dishes they used to offer with lobster or mushrooms were on the Menu. The dishes tonight were disappointing like the Lemon Linguini that had no lemon flavor and the sauce was more Alfredo than lemon. When the shrimp was the best part of the dish it's a loser. The portions have also experiences a serious shrink. We were so disappointed that we won't go back until the new Chef proves he has something to offer. A once great now is a " has been". A sad departure for a once favorite restaurant. read more

Let's go best to worst shall we? Service- Perfection. They anticipate your needs and come back quickly. No silly small talk- just mute professionalism. Ambiance- It's cramped damn it! They did not offer our party of four the lovely space upstairs that is spacious and airy. Nope stuck us behind a large party back to back. Servers couldn't even fit through. If I weren't stuck in the back of the bus I wouldn't even know there was an upstairs playing music very loud. I just felt like I was missing out. Food- Ugh. I ordered the lemon blueberry ricotta pancakes with eggs and bacon, side of breakfast potatoes. Was the lemon and ricotta in the room with us? No! Pancakes bland, the blueberry sauce/pureé was tart as ever. Everything else was decent- if you had salt, pepper, hot sauce and ketchup. Go to be seen, not for brunch unless it's liquid. The service was incredible, and I loved the Chanel No 31 drink. It was delicious. Great location to people watch if you want to sit outside. High end shopping nearby, perfect for walking off brunch and watching your sister decide what color Celine bag (I vote black; she wants dune). Some of the food was hit and miss. Hits: Warm brie appetizer; lemon ricotta pancakes; and almond croissants. I loved that the brie came with roasted garlic that was super easy to spread. The ricotta was cooked right into the pancakes, and came with fresh whipped cream with vanilla bean. Miss: Anything seafood. The crab cake appetizer was meh, but the wild Pacific salmon eggs benedict was gamey and off. The first clue was that the salmon was this dark fuchsia color, just like the color of beets. Something tasted wrong with it. It wasn't pickled or anything to warrant that color, and I'm not sure what the goal was. If I ordered something else, I think it would've been a 4 star meal. Not kid friendly (despite what they may say when you're making reservations), so don't take them. read more

I'm all about cute dining. I've never been to France but I imagine this is the type of place I would eat my meals. The staff here is so poised and attentive. I feel like there was one server per table. Whenever I lifted my head or finished a course everything was moved swiftly and discreetly. Did I mention they have stands to hang your hand bags???!!! I'm all about a great Caesar salad. This one has fried anchovies. I prefer raw so they prepared a new salad with anchovies not fried. The escargot was so decadent....buttery garlic sauce. Bistro 31 sits snugly tucked inside Highland Park Village, described as a luxury shopping and lifestyle experience plaza located in Dallas. For some context, the surrounding Highland Park area is the most affluent city in Texas, and I believe in the top 10 in the United States. They can be described as a modern european bistro with spanish and french influences. What stood out for me immediately was the high level of service from the onset of my experience here. The young man who was our waiter would put to shame waiters twice his age. For my first experience here, I went with the Bistro Omelet(egg whites, spinach, mushrooms, tomatoes and gruyere), which was one of the better omelets I've had in recent memory. Fresh, light, and delicate. Our party was seated outside on the patio next to nearly 3 heat lamps. It became so toasty, we asked our waiter if he could turn down one of the heat lamps, which he graciously obliged. A good problem to have. They do feel upscale and their staff we dealt with were all polished and friendly. A group of us met up for brunch a few Saturdays ago. We were seated outside and there were so many heat lamps that we actually asked if they could turn one of them down. This is a good problem to have for most people, especially me. For my first time here, I ordered the Escargot Bourguignonne(Garlic, Parsley, Butter)and the Bistro Omelete(Egg Whites, Spinach, Tomato, Mushroom, Gruyere). Both dishes were light, tasty, and cooked to perfection. As I mentioned, the service here is fantastic and top notch. Bistro 31 serves tasty food in a beautiful and comfortable setting. NOT A SAFE PLACE FOR WOMEN! My fiance stopped by for lunch by herself after shopping at Highland Park Village. Her waiter (Brian) inappropriately invited her out to a bar for drinks. After politely declining, she asked for a check, paid with her credit card, and left. Her waiter (Brian) decided it was okay to take my fiancé's name from her receipt and then looked her up on social media. Her waiter (Brian) proceeded to creepily privately message her on Instagram, begging her to come out. This crossed a clear line. We called the restaurant to inform them of the situation and report that this is creating an unsate environment for females in their restaurant. We spoke to the manager (Mike). He assured us that this behavior was unacceptable and that he would call back the next day with a resolution. He called back the next day to inform us that Brian received a slap on the wrist and is still employed by Mike at Bistro 31. UNBELIEVABLE! We will not be returning to Bistro 31 and suggest that everyone else avoid it as well. read more

This is a quick note on Bistro 31 because we were with a large party of 10. There were three things that really stand out for me: 1. Ambiance/ Service. Pretty place a little stuffy but we sat on the patio. We had one server for our table and she was excellent with her knowledge of the menu and the way she handled our group. 2. Everyone enjoyed their dishes. I had the lobster ravioli and my wife had the sweet potato risotto. The prices are are on the high end but I thought they were competitive with other high end places. The table shared a couple of deserts including the olive oil cake and the chocolate tart. I thought both were very good. 3. My measure of all restaurants is whether I would recommend to a friend and would I go back and the answer to both question is a big yes. read more

Upon arrival the host was very courteous and sat us in a timely manner but once we were sat it had taken us some time to be serviced,so my party and I were growing impatient and had finally decided to ask someone to get our server and once he came he made sure to be very diligent and attentive so that was a positive in our experience. The manager had also came by to apologize for the inconvenience and had offered free desserts which we happily accepted and throughout our entire meal the staff was very attentive and courteous and we felt very much welcomed. We called ahead and we're seated within 30 seconds of arriving in a busy Sunday afternoon. Mr. Michael was phenomena! He's really on top of his restaurant! We were taken straight to our table and he brought our toddler some French fries and ketchup to snack on as well as some dry erase markers to color on the table cloth with. We ordered drinks from our incredible waiter - the cappuccino was OFF. THE. HOOK. So was the Chanel 31 drink. Will be ordering that again Without a doubt. My husband got the Old Fashioned and it was great. I got the burger. It was juicy and delicious. It was perfectly put together. The lettuce, onion and tomato were caringly put together, all exactly the same size. Next time though! I'll order the salmon or brunch items just because I saw so many people ordering it really good! Hubby got the Filet and they actually didn't over like it. Super flavorful. As I said, it's a 5 star experience married to a bistro dining vibe. Love it. Will be back soon!!! I have lived in HP since before lounge 31 was in HP village. Went there to catch up with a friend hoping for a seat. Which we got no issue by the fountain on a perfect fall evening. That's where the good experience ended. The waitress had to be sought after, physically pursued the entire night, even though outside was only a 1/4 full. And when I got up to use the restroom the bouncer tried to deny me enterance, for fun? No idea? even though we'd been sitting outside for 2 hours eating and drinking. He was attempting to "stab" his co worker with the rope/ post goofing off . No big deal, but when I tried to squeeze by tried to tell me I was not allowed in. Once I told him I'd been at a table and needed to go to the bathroom he then put down his " weapon" and begrudgingly allowed me enterance. Extremely unprofessional and not what I expect for a restaurant with the price point and reputation it claims to have . We had several types of sushi and they were all delicious so this post is to specifically to tell you what not to get. The spaghetti lobster bolognese was the most basic spaghetti I've ever had. You could make this at home and it would probably be better because there wouldn't be a million diced carrots in yours. There was not a peice of lobster in sight. I don't know if they meant essence of lobster or maybe spaghetti that was cooked near lobster but lobster certainly was not in the dish in front of me. The spaghetti consists of diced lobster (I assume because I didn't see it), a whole Costco sized bag of carrots, and a bolognese sauce. At an almost $30 price tag, do not order this carrot stew. read more

The food is definitely overpriced... the shrimp linguine only comes with 2 shrimp btw and my chicken and veggies wasn't the best. Had a great lunch at Bistro 31! Service was wonderful and food was just as good. The restaurant wasn't crowded at all and the atmosphere is very soothing and relaxed and laid back. I had the Hamachi Crudo to start, very good and I loved the addition of pomegranate for a nice flavor pop...was looking for some heat tho..maybe jalapeno slice on top? My main dish was the roasted chicken. I really liked the lemon potato puree underneath I could eat that all day. Nothing like crispy chicken skin and tender meat too. Came here for lunch with a couple friends on a Saturday afternoon. We arrived a tad early but were still seated pretty quickly, which we appreciated! Our waitress was very patient with us as we poured over the menu to figure out how we were splitting dishes, who was ordering what, so thank you! (Unfortunately I did not get her name!) What we ended up getting: - mediterranean salad + chicken (vine ripe tomatoes, kalamata olives, red onion, cucumbers, feta): Small salad, but plenty of flavor! Loved the feta cheese. I thought that the chicken was done a little too dry. - sea scallop risotto + prawn: This was a daily special item that our waitress recommended. I was going for the grilled octopus, but she said that this would be easier to share. Definitely a win! The risotto was perfect in terms of salt ratio and texture. I thought that the scallops were a little too salty, although they were seared just right - quite soft in texture. There were 2 scallops and one prawn, so it actually ended up being a little hard to share... - bistro burger (8oz prime beef, cheddar cheese, house fries): I had a quarter of this burger - very flavorful and yummy! I'm not a fan of burgers usually, but this one was pretty good! We had the meat done medium, and I think that was the right call! - branzino (heirloom vegetables, potatoes, lemon olive oil sauce): Loved the potatoes in the little skillet that came on the side! The branzino was done very nicely - not too salty, not too grilled, soft and juicy, full of flavor. This was my favorite dish of our lunch! - basque cheesecake with berry thyme compote: One of the best cheesecakes I've had in Dallas! I love basque-style cheesecake, which is burnt on one side. Dense but still fluffy - it's hard to describe! We loved it more than we expected!! Would recommend. How have I not written a review for this place yet?!? It's one of our regular spots as the food is spectacular. The upstairs has sushi but you can ask them for the menu and have a bit of both. The service is always super attentive and has great ties to SMU. The manager Michael did a great job checking in on the tables and is great at building relationships. The food- I've never gone wrong with the hand cut pappardelle. The ratio of pasta to ragu is perfection and the portion size is just right with every bite a blend of savory short rib and chewy yet tender pasta. They do a great job with their specials and I've never been disappointed with the variety offered, especially the fish dishes. They have an extensive wine list and the cocktails are delicious. The sushi and bistro vibe are almost counterintuitive in my book but they do both extremely well and I would recommend trying it all! The only drawback is that there's really not much social distancing here so if you're one who cringes at full restaurants than wait until post Covid to dine here. read more

The soup left much to be desired. Not much flavor to it, and a little upset I paid the up charge for it, assuming the cauliflower soup it came with was better. Finally, the Mac and cheese was bland as well. Again, the service made up for the bisque and Mac and cheese. Finally, the French 31 is amazing. Made reservations here for family visiting from out of town. Their trip was somewhat last minute so I needed a last minute reservation fast and it just so happened they had a 5 pm cancellation. We brought along our 2 year old, which I was a little worried about given this is a formal setting. They were very accommodating and didn't seem to mind that he would wander around the restaurant from time to time. The service was excellent from start to finish and the food was delicious. We ordered a burger for my son, which was a little more rare than I wanted and they immediately made us a new one that was well done. I also got the bistro salad with grilled chicken and a few family members ordered the different pastas. Everyone was happy with their food. Our garcon was Frank and he was fantastic. We started off the meal imbibing on two carefully crafted cocktails that were both pungent and potent. We then order a tuna tower off of the sushi menu (pro-tip). For the main course, i had a seafood risotto. There was a voluminous variety of fresh seafood overflowing throughout the dish. This was mine and my friends' first time dining at Bistro 31. Jesus was our server and he was amazing! He explained the specials off the menu and favorited menu items very efficiently! I got the Chilean sea bass he recommended as a favorite and it was amazing! Perfectly cooked and delicious! For dessert I had the pistachio tiramisu and it was amazing also! The atmosphere was positive and inside the restaurant was beautiful! It just sucks it was raining! We sat on the patio area under the cover due to the weather. A perfect lunch, 5/5 stars!
