My family and I have been coming to Bistro Chen for 3.5 years. For the most part, we've had awesome experiences with the food and service. However, the past few months we have received take out that has not been good at all. It seems as though the food is always reheated, over cooked and almost hard to chew up. We've mentioned this to the staff when we placed our take out orders and they always ensure all food is made fresh. Because this is about the 10th time this has happened, we unfortunately will be taking our business elsewhere which makes me sad since we used to love Bistro. They know me and our family! Food good. Service NOT good. Not impressed at all. Came here for a dim sum lunch on a Saturday. Not crowded - less than half full when we arrived. So we were seated, menu was provided right away. Took a while for someone to ask us if we needed anything --- like water or tea. The place was not full at all at that time and it seemed that they had more than enough servers so we were hoping for a faster service. So the first dish arrived. We did not have any plates and could not start dining. We asked the server to get us plates....we should have had them already. The plates did not arrive for a while.... In fact, the server did forget to get us the plates. We receive the plates when the 2nd dish arrived quite a bit after the 1st one. They brought the dish we never ordered. They brought the duplicate order. They did not bring the dish we ordered. Was told it was not in the order list from our table - we clearly ordered this dish. So we re-ordered and it took quite long for us to get it finally. The check was for $22.00 without tax. Total was about $24. When the receipt for the credit card payment came, it was for over $28. ??? Did they already include the tips??? We inquired about this to the staff, and it was due to the original check did not include the "tea" we had, but the credit card was charged for it. OK, we understand that they had to charge for tea, that's fine. But when the amount in the check we agreed to pay for and the receipt of the credit card payment amount differ without our knowledge, we don't think it is right. At least they could have explained before we asked. It's a shame as the food was quite tasty. We felt the portion was a bit small compared to other places (suburbs/Chinatown) we have Dim Sum, though. Selection was not really big compared to what you'll have in Chinatown, but being one of the very few places to offer dim sum in suburbs we are okay with that. read more

Let me start this out by saying I'm Gluten Free and normally wouldn't even consider a place with Chinese food due to the very low probability that I'd be able to eat it. What changed my mind about going here was seeing on their menu that they claim to be able to make "most" of their dishes gluten free. So with immense amounts of excitement that I had found a nearby restaurant that offers Gluten Free Chinese food I stopped in there. Well I guess my definition of "most" and their definition of "most" was a bit different, because apparently to them "most" is ONE dish and by one dish I mean they grilled some chicken with rice noodles with NO SAUCE... Needless to say I was disappointed tremendously. Now I'm not one of those Gluten Free crusaders who gets mad if there aren't a lot of options for me, but to straight up LIE and pretend to offer food that I can eat is completely unacceptable. Everyone who is Gluten Free should avoid this place and I implore non-gluten free people to avoid it as well out of principle that lying should not be tolerated. read more

I am going to be honest this place has awesome food for the suburbs and can compare to Chinatown dim sum; however, there was a major issue we ran into that made me jump on here and leave my experience. I have brought a lot of my family members to this restaurant several times and never ran into an issue until this time around so here it is. We walked in at 11 AM on a Saturday to be seated (2 waitresses: 1 Asian & other is Caucasian) with my wife and 2 kids (2 year old son & 4 year old son). There was no one in the restaurant just yet since they just opened and my two kids were being kids sitting down (not running around) but being on the noisy side (they were hungry). We put in our order and all of a sudden the young lady (Asian) comes out and says, "the congee is not ready yet but it will be out in 5 minutes, but when customers start coming in can you make sure you control your kids where they not too loud." I said certainly and all of a sudden my wife looked at me and said lets leave! So we left the place and canceled our order. Myself being Chinese American I was very embarrassed, disappointed but knowing that most Asian restaurants service is average to below average I should of not been surprised. I have never had this issue arise before at a restaurant so I stormed back to the restaurant and talk to the lady (Asian) nicely for future reference never tell a parent to control the behavior of their kids. She kept on saying what I meant was to have your kids be more quiet so other customers won't get disturbed........I was in shock thinking in my head are you sure you understand customer service, so then I turned to the other waitress (Caucasian) and said tell the waitress (Asian) she is wrong. The waitress (Caucasian) understood my perspective and agreed so here it is IF YOU HAVE KIDS (Toddlers 0-5) THIS IS NOT A KID FRIENDLY RESTAURANT they will embarrass you and make you feel awkward. I have been here more than 5 times the food is pretty good; however, the service is terrible and if you have kids STAY AWAY!!! read more

Great food and even better service! We went in pretty late on a week day and still got great service. Our waitress Kei was awesome. She was very cheerful and active even at that hour and took the time to explain the dishes and also make suggestions. Wish there are more people like her in the service industry! The food was pretty good too. We had salt & pepper egg tofu, vegetable dumplings, curry vegetables and ended with warm taro and egg custard tapioca. Everything tasted great. Ordered take-out from here on a random night. There were three of us and we were hungry! We got a full order of general tso's and Mongolian beef. The general's was not very spicy at all but it was still good; it had actual pieces of chicken, not just fried nothing. The beef was also super good, and not tough/chewy at all. While on the pricier side for Asian takeout, 13/dish + 1 dollar to upgrade to fried rice, it was enough food for probably 6 people.We had leftovers for the next few days. Paid 39$ for sweet and sour chicken, shrimp and brocoli, and 4 Cali rolls. Take out menu and was looking forward to a nice new spot. It was soggy breaking, the shrimp were nothing more than frozen shrimp reheated and even the rice was salty. My wife and I threw it out without finishing. Too bad as their aren't any good Asian restaraunts in the area and we were hoping for a new spot. Yeah pretty gross food. read more

Surprise, surprise, surprise. Was a reluctant patron but pleasantly surprised by their dim sum. Turnip cakes and fried dumpling w pork were fantastic. Pork crepe was disappointing. Shiu mai and sticky rice (lotus wrapped) were solid. They were out of the pea sprouts but the baby bok choy were a delicious substitue. And the pork belly is a must-have. Crispy sesame beef was not crispy at all. Beef was soggy and lacked a glaze as described. Fried rice tasted like brown rice and egg rolls were soggy. We were told our pickup would be ready in 15 min. We ended up waiting 30 min with restaurant completely empty for mediocre food. read more

Ok besides the fact the food and service was great, this place is really cool. Online ordering is coming soon and they have a take out window facing the sidewalk. Love that! The sushi was incredibly fresh and well made. I did not have any of the entrees. My only suggestion is that they list all of the ingredients for their sushi rolls on their menu. Came here today for the first time. Great dim sum selection--diverse, fresh, lots of interesting choices that I don't find at my other favorite local Chinese restaurant Jockey Wok n Rolls. Bistro Chen is one of the best upscale Chinese restaurants in the suburbs. The service is excellent, the ambiance is pleasing, and the food is outstanding. A plus is that they also have decent sushi. Moreover, the prices are reasonable for what you get. Clearly, if you are looking for the cheap Chinese rice and noodle shop on the corner, this is not it. But, if you are looking for a nice restaurant for a special occasion, group outing or a date, Bistro Chen should be in the picture. We love Dim Sum and try to go to Chinatown, but sometimes, it just isn't worth the hassle. We used to go to Jockey Wok and Roll, but it has closed. So we tried Bistro Chen for the first time, which is actually closer to home. Dim Sum items are ordered off a checklist vs. rolling carts. This has become our go to place for sushi. Everything is always fresh and tasty. The wait staff are always so helpful and pleasant. I had my husbands birthday party here and they treated us like royalty. Everyone who came enjoyed themselves and the food to the max! One thing I always look for is good service. I live nearby and constantly saw how popular the place was, so I decided to give it a try. I havnt tried the service (I did carryout). But the food is great! And I'm picky about potstickers. In my online order (you can order online) I asked to have a different type of noodle used, and I said I would pay the difference. They did what I requested and didn't charge me. Yay Carryout window, which I guess they use on warm busy nights. Guy I met was nice. The other staff sat around, but it was just a slow night. Parking will most likely require the parking garage, unless you live nearby. Inside seems to be a romantic set up (where I'm from, chinease is great for dates). read more

One Saturday afternoon I and a sibling decided we were in the mood for some Dim Sum, and so we tried Bistro Chen out. Note that this is not like the inexpensive Dim sum places in Chinatown the dishes here are made to order (not premade) and so are a little slower and more expensive, but a LOT higher quality. We tried roughly ten or so different dishes, almost all of them uniformly excellent, with the surprising Turnip cake and Siu Mai being our favorites. The nice little pot of Jasmine Tea we had with our meal was refilled frequently. The only single drawback was the the ribs in black bean sauce were a little fatty, but that's a very minor quibble as the sauce was well executed and the meat was well seasoned. Upon walking in to the restaurant we were greeted by a very friendly waitress and promptly seated. We were also immediately smacked in the face with the smell of raw wood. It was like walking into Home Depot... The food is very good, sushi and dim sum were both top notch. Also the typical American Chinese dishes are stellar. The service was outstanding. Kei and her assistant were willing to answer any question and were attentive to our needs without hovering. The food was delightful. We began with miso soup and ginger salad, both great. The salad was very fresh with just the right amount of dressing. The egg rolls are one of my favorites and their house sweet and sour can't be beat. We also ordered the chicken and shrimp hibachi, combo fried rice and sushi (Mexican roll, spicy salmon, spicy tuna, and Hawaiian). Finally! Delicious and high-quality Asian food - and great service! We had the orange chicken and Mongolian beef as takeout. The orange chicken was white meat with very little breading (major plus in my book) with a very tasty sauce. The beef was good, although not necessarily a standout. I love that they offer brown rice for an upcharge instead of being stuck with white. I was impressed by the service. We got home and realized our egg rolls were missing. I called to see if we could just get a refund, and they insisted on delivering them to us. Very nice! The egg rolls were very good - and still hot! We will definitely be back! read more

I have had Dim Sum in several countries and countless cities in the US, this was the best Dim Sum I have had ever.

Just came home after having dinner at Bistro Chen, I had my daughter and her son ( my grandson ) with me. I had a coupon from Groupon which I told the server when she came to take our order. It was about 6:45 PM and they were not too crowded so we were seated right away. Our server after delivering our menus took more time that I thought was appropriate. As I said when she did come to take our orders I told her that I had a Groupon, she said ok then took the orders. I ordered two Pot Sticker appetizers, which took more than what it should have to be brought to our table. Then it took 30 mins possibly closer to 45 mins for our main course to arrive. The three of us all ordered from a menu where you build your own meal. You can order a soup, appetizer, two entrees and another side. I had the hot and sour soup, which was very tasty, the egg roll was just okay ( I understand that this is subjective ). The Sweet and Sour Chicken was good but just warm going a bit to the cool side. My Mongolian beef, was the correct temperature and was very good it had great flavor and was not spicy. The house fried rice was good, but my daughter who also had the fried rice thought it was very good. She had the Chicken Lo Mein and said that was very good. She also had the Spicy Salmon roll and said that was very good. My grandson had the Spicy Salmon, fried rice and agreed they were both good and agrees with me that the Hot and Sour soup was very good. He was not happy with his Orange chicken he said it was not very crispy and thought it was on the soggy side. Over all the food was good with those minor complaints from myself and the long wait we had for the food. So when the server came with our check I had to remind her that I had the Groupon. She said okay and I gave her my cell phone so she could retrieve the coupon. She left to correct the bill, then she came back she said that we could not use the coupon for what we had ordered. I told her that she did not say that we could not order from that menu. I told her other places when I tell them that I have a Groupon will immediately advise me what is not included with the offering. She left and the manager came over to show on that particular menu where is says no discounts. Again I explained to the manager that when the server first came over that I told her that we had the Groupon, then later when she took our order she did not tell us that we could not use the Groupon for these menu items. Plus I told the manager the menu does not say NO Groupon, it just said no discount and then it's in small print under the lists of soup. I told her if the server had told us we could not use the coupon we would have made other choices. In the end the manager did provide us with the discount. So all in all not a very happy experience so needless to say we'll not be going here again. read more

We went for dim sum today. The dim sum is made fresh and not sitting in carts to get cold or rubbery They have have a good variety. The chicken feet where a little on the hot side but very good. The turnip cake is home made maybe the best we have had. The service was very good things coming a few at a time. It depends on what you order I am sure. First and foremost, I am gluten free. So Asian take-out can be tricky. But this place is fantastic. Many items on the menu I can order as gluten free since they cook to order. If you are in the mood for dimsum, and the Phoenix restaurant in chinatown is not an option, this place will do. Most of the dimsum plates are good including chicken feet, taro puff, fried pork dumpling, and sesame seed ball. I feel the skin of the shrimp dumpling and its variety is too thick. The rice and chicken lotus leaf is good but too sticky, you have to scrape it off the leaf with effort and it's a mess. We had turnip cake in XO sauce instead of the turnip cake and it was very good. It is a little pricey but I guess it evens out if you save on gas and time. read more
