This place has been on my bookmarks list for forever, and I'm glad I finally got to visit! It's increasingly difficult to find the perfect trifecta of coffee + wifi (and outlets) + food, and somehow Bitter + Sweet has all of the above. Their signature red velvet latte is delicious, their southwest chicken panini is thoughtfully crafted, and they even have Humphrey Slocombe ice cream! And cake. And wine (after 3 pm, anyway). Wifi is free but requires a code every 2 hours, which likely helps greatly with squatters as the place is always busy, but not ever completely packed to the brim. Parking is also plentiful. One star off for price (panini + latte + one mere scoop of ice cream = $20 prior to tip), but otherwise absolutely no complaints here. We went there on a Memorial Day weekend and there was just 1 person tending to all the customers. Understandably, the customer service wasn't top notch. They just have 1 or 2 menus to look at. While I was about to pay the bill, I was specifically asked to keep the menu back which I had brought to the counter to place my order. We tried the hazelnut chocolate mousse which was too sweet for my taste. The southwestern chicken was pretty good and I also enjoyed the peppers and the tomatoes. While I was sitting on toilet, someone tried to enter trying to peek inside from the door gap! I was shouting like "I'm here. Excuse me. I'm always on the hunt for a good coffee shop in my area, and while the coffee was decent here--and quite pretty--the ambiance was a little lackluster. The space looks like it's been well-loved, which is probably a good sign, but it's due for a refresh. Bitter + Sweet is located on Town Center Lane in Cupertino. the shop is located in a cluster of businesses. there's a Curry House n Kee Wah Bakery there also. parking is kind of limited in the front of the shop, but there's more parking spaces in the Wells Fargo lot across the plaza. I've been to Bitter + Sweet a couple of times before n it has never disappointed me. their most popular item is of course their Red Velvet Latté which I've tried a couple of times. (they use a reddish powder.) for the ppl who likes sweet drinks, it's a definite home-run. it's just like a dessert in liquid form! it might b too sweet for others. if u r more into the caffeine n espresso taste, it's better to go with their regular espresso drinks i.e. cappuccino, latté, n américano. they r also the only place (that I know of.) around the South Bay that sells Humphrey Slocombe ice cream by the scoop or by the pint. their scoops here r kinda small tho. the service has always been great. the wait has never been over 5 minutes for my coffee. (if there's customers ahead of me, the wait was probably an additional 5 minutes which I can handle.) the shop isn't that big inside (about 6 small tables plus a small bar area.) that's one of the reasons y I don't go to Bitter + Sweet more often. it's a popular café so most times when I go, the tables inside r all taken n the table outside is filled also. Three reasons why I love going to this coffee shop: 1. The impeccable latte art (Shout out to their awesome barista, Daniel Vu [@Barista_Dan], for his unique artistic skillz). 2. Their Red Velvet Latte. 3. Their Hazelnut Napoleon Cake. Recommended to me by a dear friend and Yelper, Mish A., I knew I would not be disappointed with Bitter+Sweet. My favorite coffee by far is their Red Velvet Latte ($4.75) - a light, red velvet flavored coffee with a hint of sweetness but with a whole lot of caffeine kick. I'm not a huge fan of overly sweet latte's so if you also feel the same, Bitter+Sweet's Red Velvet Latte may just be the perfect selection for you, IMO. Each latte/coffee is perfectly crafted and finished with beautiful latte art by a skilled Bitter+Sweet barista, something that you won't get from a chain such as Starbucks or Philz'. With regard to their cakes, I highly recommend their Tiramisu ($5.95) and their Hazelnut Napoleon ($5.95). Their cakes are more on the pricey side, however, rest assure that they are always fresh and are, to my knowledge, sourced only from local bakeries. Nice coffee shop. The service was helpful when it came to recommendations. I enjoyed the samples of the ice cream. I tried the Vietnamese coffee and the Guinness gingerbread. The Guinness gingerbread sounded like a weird combination but when I tried it, I was pleasantly surprised. You could really taste the Guinness and there were big chunks of gingerbread. I ordered a scoop of the Vietnamese coffee. It has a strong coffee flavor that I really enjoyed. Overall, the ice cream is great and I would definitely come back and try the other flavors. What I love more than the Humphrey Slocombe ice cream served at Bitter+Sweet, is it's ambiance. The cafe is very chic and sophisticated, with it's counter-height tables and stools. I feel like I have to elegantly stick out my pinky finger, as I sip on my coffee. I came here specifically to try the secret breakfast ice cream. Apparently Bitter+Sweet gets their ice cream directly from the Humphrey Slocombe store in San Francisco, so you can imagine how much effort and care was required in bringing the ice cream to San Jose. As an avid coffee, latte, espresso drinker...I thought I knew my stuff. I work right across the street from Bitter Sweet so some co-workers and I walked across the street for the stores opening. I have never been to such a crafty coffee shop before. They asked me what I usually drink and I said a "grande skinny iced latte". He exclaimed that they don't serve any syrups and they also don't carry any milk under 2%. I was thrown a little off guard but chose to try to 'low-fat' iced latte. I took him about 2 minutes or so to carefully craft my iced late. He handed it to me and told me that they provided sugar off to the side. Before I put anything in the latte, I sipped it......HEAVEN! I have never had a coffee that tasted this good in MY LIFE. I passed on the sugar and decided that I did not want to mask the taste of this perfect, fresh, coffee/espresso bean concoction. The staff is friendly and the place is clean. I would suggest jazzing the place up with MUSIC and ARTWORK! Wow Bitter+Sweet, I am impressed. It's a small cafe tucked between Amici's and the Cupertino Library and it's a very "cute" location. It's great for studying, hanging out, or for grabbing a quick bite/drink -- the place is full with indoor seating, including barstyle seats, booths, high tables, and the "hangout lounge chairs," and not to forget, FREE Wi-Fi (always a plus in my book). The customer service is commendable; the barista was very kind and well-informed on the type of drinks they serve and their preferred roast. They use the famous Sightglass Owl's Howl's medium roast from San Francisco -- it's a very smooth and not-so-sweet roast that makes amazing espresso for any type of coffee drinker. I'm not sure if they carry other roasts, but I'm sure they're not as popular/great tasting as the Sightglass. Now I finally understand the insane amount of hype about the place. I usually hate flavored espresso drinks because I like to enjoy the taste of a good espresso, especially with SG roast -- I have had many bad experiences with them because they always turn out to be toooo sweet for my liking. Plus, I honestly HATE red velvet, but I decided to try it anyways because of the extensive publicity of it. The "Red Velvet Latte" is very 'youthful' and rich, but it was a little too sweet for me (what I expected from my past experiences). The espresso was very milky and creamy, and I probably could have requested a different amount, but it helped accentuate the unmistakable red velvet flavor. To be honest, it tasted more like a drink than an espresso. Also, the latte art is phenomenal - request an image and they'll do it for you! As I mentioned earlier they used Sightglass Owl's Howl, but unfortunately the Red Velvet flavoring disguised the delectable essence of the roast. If you're more like me, someone who would prefer to taste espresso, I would recommend ordering either a straight espresso, a macchiato or a gibraltar. The Red Velvet Latte really isn't something I would get on a daily basis, but it sure is a great drink to try once in a while. To summarize: PROS - Spacious, lots of seating - Sightglass Owl's Howl Roast - Red Velvet had good flavor, very rich - Latte Art is crazzzzy CONS - From my view, Red Velvet dumbs down the flavor - Too milky, sweet for me - OVERPRICED - $4.50 for a latte! Never before have I ever been to such a heart warming and cute cafe! Bitter and Sweet is what hospitality is all about. Although I've only been here a couple of times, this place always has me leaving with a smile on my face. The owner Janice, is an incredibly passionate woman who obviously loves her job and what she does. I've tried a couple of the desserts here and they are all quite amazing! I have to recommend the tiramisu. It is the most amazing -if not the best, tiramisu I have ever had within the bay area. The silky chocolate shell is very velvety and sweet, which is a nice counter to the soft and not overly sweet layers of mascarpone and cake. The chocolate truffle cake is very decadent and sweet -served with raspberries! :) The hazelnut cake is highly reminiscent of the usual nutella-esque taste with a nice soft touch. I am so glad they carry Humphry Slocombe ice cream here! We don't all have to drive to S.F anymore to eat some. They carry the most popular flavors here, with my favorite being the Vietnamese bottle coffee and the Secret breakfast. Definitely give them a try! Bottom line at the top: this should be your go-to coffee shop in Cupertino. Its a lovely local coffee shop and they have Humphry Slocombe ice cream! -- I usually come here for ice cream. They usually have Tahitian vanilla, Vietnamese coffee, secret breakfast, and the rest kinda changes. You can get a small (about one scoop of one flavor) or a medium (about two scoops of two flavors). The coffee here is very good but there are a few gripes. They only offer double shots so keep that in mind. If you don't have a high tolerance you can ask for half caff (half caffeine half decaf). They also don't have packets of sugar so if you're picking up coffee for someone else that might be a little tricky. I came here with my friend and the crowd was.. interesting. All the tables were occupied with people working/studying/on laptops but we didn't recognize anyone (we went to high school here so that is abnormal and kind of surprising, in a good way!). No macchiatos to-go! Gibraltar instead or a very dry cappuccino. Other than that all the employees and very friendly and helpful. read more

Wow. I am pretty surprised I have not written a review for this place yet. There's a lot of places that I love in SF and am often sad that I can't go as frequently as I like. Lucky for us southbayers, in comes Bitter + Sweet. I followed the yelp bandwagon and ordered the red velvet latte and the Humphrys Secret Breakfast Ice Cream. The red velvet latte was a nice touch. Not too sweet but just enough. I usually like to get it with non-fat milk so you can taste the flavor a little bit more. I feel like the 2% usually softens it up too much. Not to crazy about it but it's worth a try. Just recently, I discovered that the coffee they use is from Sightglass. If you never heard of it, look it up. It's in San Francisco. This is my FAVORITE brand of coffee. It's super smooth, no need for cream or sugar. (mind you, even for Philz, I have to add a pack of stevia and maybe some almond milk) Not necessary for my Sightglass Blueboon Blend. You can also purchase the beans from them! (Sometimes I wonder.. how can something so small bring me so much happiness) As for the ice cream, I ordered the Secret Breakfast. It was amazing. You can definitely taste the bourbon in it and the wafers were a nice touch. I'm hoping this location will also carry the black sesame flavor one day. read more

So I came here over the weeknd with my friend and LOVED it! The only thing I didn't love too much was it's on the pricey side. They told me you could make the Red Velvet Latte without the shot of coffee since I'm not a coffee fan and so I went for it. I'm not much of a red velvet person, but this latte was oh so good!!! I think next time I wll ask them to make it extra hot, cuz I drank mine on the slow side and by the time I hit the half way mark it wasn't even near warm anymore. I also asked what the Matcha Doodle ice cream was and it's Matcha green tea with snicker doodle cookie pieces in it. We came back for that after dinner. It was good!! I really want to like this place. It's close by to home and one of the few coffee shops with study area in Cupertino. Drinks: 4 stars. Stuck up. Pretentious. You can't have it your way. Snobby. Patronizing. Screw you mister customer we don't do it your way. I spent five minutes trying to order a wet macchiato and was repeatedly corrected. Yes, I know the difference between the bastardized Starbu&$@ version of a macchiato and the real thing. And yes, thank you, I have had coffee from niche hand poured providers for years. If you are into condescending service, this is your place! It was also stuffy inside and smelled of body odor. Not that this last part was their fault (giving the employees there the benefit of the doubt) but it added to the whole experience and ambiance. On a final note... You aren't curing cancer. You aren't solving world hunger... You are pouring coffee. This should be in no way demeaning for you or for people trying to order your coffee. Alienating your potential customers because they don't order the coffee according to your rules isn't just bad business... It's really bad juju. read more

Pretty new building, awesome coffee, cheerful service and mellow atmosphere. Again, was my Italian friend, coffee aficionado, who showed me this quaint and stylish coffee shop. Cappuccinos are so good that I have to have 3 in a row! Croissants are flakey but sometimes is better to have them warmed up. Try the almond ones, very tasty. Great place to have a light lunch. The grilled cheese sandwich was excellent. Didn't try the coffee yet. Will come back again. Was pretty crowded when I came in but there is a large communal table and plenty of small tables, so it was easy to find a seating place. read more

I have never heard of a red velvet latte until I stumbled upon this awesome cafe! It is definitely something different since the drink is, of course, red. Being a red velvet flavored latte, I expected to be sweet like the cake. When it came out, my first thought was that it smelled like the cake! When you take a sip of it, you're hit with a nice taste of coffee which isn't masked by the overly sweet syrups/powders/flavors, like some other places. It was quite fun to drink because you'll be thinking of red velvet cake as you drink it, but the actual red velvet flavor really isn't all there. On the other hand, I thought the chai latte was great! The chai smell and taste were definitely there, and again, it was not super sweet. It was certainly an enjoyable drink. In honor of Harry Potter, I had to try the butter beer ice cream. Although the single scoop was quite small and pricey, it was enough for me. The butter beer was pretty sweet and rich, with a hint of beer at the end. Even though it was still morning, I did NOT regret having a little bit of this treat! read more

This place is so awesome! The entire time I was there, my friend and I kept saying "we need to come back and try everything!" When we saw each other the next day, we were like "so when are we going back?" I got a red velvet blended frozen and the petit basque cheese plate. She got a scoop of Humphry Slocum Tahitian vanilla ice cream and an iced latte (or some other coffee drink, I'm not sure) with macadamia milk. It was a little two much food for the two of us, but we have no regrets. My blended frozen came out more like a slurpee than a milk shake, and it was delicious. I could be wrong but I don't think it was heavily caffeinated, and it did taste like red velvet. I would've gotten their signature red velvet latte but it was warm outside. The cheese plate was super cute and a generous portion, but I would've liked more carbs (crackers or bread) to accompany it. I'm sure they would've given me some if I'd asked for it though. My friend didn't say much about her drink, but she commented about how rare it is to get macadamia milk here - she's from Hawaii. The ice cream was excellent, rich and flavorful. The shop is small, but it's a nice space. They give you wifi codes that are valid for two hours, and I could easily see myself hanging out there and working for a couple of hours while I enjoy a pastry or a sandwich. They serve wine after 3 PM, so it could be a happy hour location too. It's true that all of the items are a bit pricey, but the quality is so good. Stumbled upon this coffee shoppe and am glad that I did. It's a little hidden but definitely visible once you're in the shopping center parking lot that it's cozily nestled in. You're greeted once you enter through their big glass doors by I presume the owner. She's both friendly and helpful with offering suggestions. Once you walk in, you'll see a menu with coffee and pastry offerings. They've got a select few but all so delectable in presentation and taste, and I know this since I did sucker myself into buying a chocolate torte. I went straight to what I know and ordered an Americano. Apparently, their specialty here is the Red Velvet Latte since while I waited for my café the barista/owner must have poured out like six of them. She mentioned that it may be a tad bit sweet for my tastebuds since I went with a bolder coffee, but I'm willing to take the dive to see for myself. Parking is a little sparse since it is sandwiched among a pretty busy business center with parking spaces marked for those individual businesses and a series of apartment complexes. This will make it a little difficult to try to find parking right away, but def try your luck. Totally worth it. Wifi available with plenty of seating inside. One more thing, don't forget to close those glass doors behind you! There's a sign upon entering reminding you of this...I'm sure it's done to keep the warm and cozy just right.
