I was less impressed by my second visit to Izumi after my friend's powerlifting competition. As I went to check out, I noticed the point of sales ordering platform this location used was Chowbus, and apparently, it had stored my outdated contact information from before I changed my legal name. When my drink was ready, the staff announced my order using my old name. I informed them I go by a different legal name now and asked how to update it in the system. The staff was not helpful and rushed me along, saying they don't know how to change it. Later I tried contacting Chowbus customer support numerous times to correct my contact information but without success. Is Izumi matcha worth the hype? I have been to Izumi matcha over ten times at this point and remember first trying it in their original location in the silver creek area of San Jose before the matcha boom. Prior this place was unique and delicious, and really hit a spot. I believe that now with the various matcha spots around, it may not have as much as of unique selling point. Their tornado matcha is good and sweet, and is a great dessert however in my personal opinion, their traditional drinks are not standouts. Last week I went with a friend and ordered a matcha oat latte with a double shot, and while I tasted the matcha, it was grainy and didn't really have any depth. I wouldn't say I would avoid going here, for a matcha option and to get caffeinated for the day. It is still an option but I feel like it wouldn't be fair to say it's worth driving over 30+ minutes here. As a note too, this location can get extremely busy in terms of parking! The plaza is popping with heavy hitters. My friend and I both got our treats minutes after we ordered. There is no indoor seating but there are plenty of benches outdoors. The interior is minimally decorated, and I noticed a wall full of gorgeous, handmade pottery. The treats here were so tasty! My friend tried a Classic Honey Matcha Latte, which she stated had a deep matcha flavor. I tried the matcha and black sesame soft serve. I'm not even a huge black sesame fan, but this black sesame flavor was addicting. It was nutty, creamy, and probably the best black sesame taste I've ever had. It wasn't a really strong black sesame flavor (which might be why I liked it so much). The subtlety in flavor helped with the richness of the soft serve. The matcha soft serve was equally delicious, a vivid green color. Super delicious. The Crème Cheese Hōjicha Tea has a nice balance of sweetness, and that matcha refreshing taste. I heard it was super sweet, but it wasn't too bad! I did take a sip of the Honey Hōjicha Latte with Oat milk, which I will be saving for tomorrow, and it's also very tasty. I taste the roasted tea especially on the aftertaste. Everything tastes very premium and high quality, so it does not disappoint! I definitely will be back to try their ice cream. Ambiance, it's very spacious. It's like they have this big open space where people can just stand and wait for their drinks, but I think maybe having some seating area in the middle would have been nice, or a bar seating window to chill. Stopped by after lunch - I ordered the matcha and black sesame soft serve. I enjoyed the matcha powder they sprinkled on top. That said, while it was good, I wouldn't say it particularly stands out compared to other matcha locations. I also ordered the Lychee Matcha Tea with regular sugar (which they recommended) and less ice. I usually enjoy lychee quite a bit, but the combination with matcha tasted a bit strange to me. I didn't end up liking it very much, though I think that's more of a personal preference than an issue with the drink itself. Overall the place is clean and service is quick. The only bottleneck seems to be ordering since they only have one kiosk. Adding a second kiosk would probably help during busier times. The line moves very slowly, but the drinks were ready pretty quickly (like a couple minutes) after we ordered. I got the Okinawa Hojicha and paid an extra 95 cents for oat milk. I got it less sweet (which has a big NOT RECOMMENDED next to it). I liked it! It was the perfect sweetness for me. But you'll have to make sure to mix the black sugar syrup in, since it keeps sinking to the bottom.
