We arrived about 15 minutes after opening. Being the ONLY customers, the waitress was quick to take our drink orders. But that's where it ended. It took 1.5 hours for two people, the only two people, to eat lunch. We stopped here hoping it would be quick as we had a long driving day, but it seemed as though the wait staff didn't care - and from the photos you can see they had nothing else to do. We came in on a Sunday afternoon and were greeted by the host who sat us pretty much immediately. He informed us there was only one server in the entire dining room since they were short staffed. We totally get it and our server, Corey was fantastic as he had about 40 people/5 tables going. He was pleasant and gave us samples of the bbq sauce and beer to see what we might best like. We come here every couple of months and this time ordered the kids chicken fingers with fruit, boneless wings with yummy bbq sauce and the brown and red ales. So good and we'll be back! I took my mom to Bj's for the first time. I typically like the one in Newport News, and did not check the reviews as this location. Well is was a nice atmosphere because it was college night, and they were interviewing local football players and had giveaways. Our server was nice, we were seated as soon as we walked in. Our potstickers were amazing, however our entrees were a little cold. I was not a fan of the lemon sauce on the salmon! Don't come. The service is horrible. The draft taps are all not working. The place was almost empty and still took 10 minutes to get seated. We did have 7 people, but there were plenty of long tables available. It seemed that there were limited servers. Drink delivery was at least 10 minutes and then 10 minutes after I asked for sweeteners. Appetizers delivered with no plates and I had to get up and go to the bar to ask for those. Go elsewhere. The parking lot was full however there was still ample parking available. Upon walking up to the building, the main entrance had signs posted to alert us to use other entrance. The hostess was prompt and friendly upon our arrival and we were seated relatively quickly. We were informed as we were seated that it would be a bit for silverware as they'd been busy a bit earlier and kitchen was a tad behind. It was after this that it slowly started going down hill. It took approximately 15 minutes after being seated for our waiter to come and take drink orders (which we found out then there was no tea available but it was being made which we were ok with). It took about another 15-20 minutes for our drinks to arrive. We placed our meal orders after drinks arrived and it took about an hour for us to get our food. One member of our group had ordered the soup and salad which I was surprised even at how long it took for that to arrive. We had to ask several times for additional silverware for members of our party as we weren't provided with enough when it did arrive. The ranch dressing received with the boneless wings was hot and runny (far from what was expected of ranch dressing). The wings were dry, fries cold, and Dr Pepper was flat. By the time we received our check we were just ready to go due to the poor service that was experienced. We had been preciously during lunch hours and always had a good experience. My friends and I walked in at 4:30 and the kind hostess greeted us with a smile on her face and led us to our table where we saw.....nothing because the lights were too dim. Our server brought us waters. We apparently didn't have a choice of beverage as he never asked what we would like to drink. He asked us right away what we wanted to eat and when we requested a few more minutes to look at the menu, he proceeded to give us about an hour before returning. When he finally returned, we ordered and then proceeded to wait another hour before receiving our food. Mind you, we are 3 of the 6 customers in the restaurant, and the wait staff outnumbered the customers 3 to 1. At this point my friend's water had been empty for 45 minutes. My other friend ordered a $17 pizza that could be comfortably eaten in two bites. When we tried to ask for refills, our server would cut us off as we were talking to (ironically) respond with "Right away, right away." From there, he disappeared for the next 3-5 business days. I got up from the table to request a dessert menu from the hostess because I knew our server would not be around any time soon for me to ask for one. The next time he came by, we ordered the best part of this dining experience, the Dubai chocolate pizookie. This delicacy quite frankly made the trials and tribulations of this experience worth it. Fast forward (but not actually fast) we receive the check as it is closing in on our second full hour being there. He proceeded to tell us he could not split the check by item, keep in mind he had not asked how we wanted it to be split. Our cards sat on the table yearning to be picked up, while our server was not seen for 20 minutes. At the end of the experience, we felt overall neglected and unimportant. Throughout the night he consistently walked past us without looking our way. At the end, we were upset to leave as it felt like we had made the dinner table our home after spending 2.5 hours there. BE ON THE LOOKOUT - if you get a short man with (a little bit of) dark hair as your server, be prepared to spend your entire night at BJs Brewhouse. If you are pressed for time, I would suggest the nearby Qdoba as a better option. Our server (Drew P by the way) sure knows how to craft a memorable experience for his customers. read more

I love that we can get a table for 6 at 9:30pm and when we walk in, the servers and bartenders are happy to see us. Our server was Walton and our bartender was Shay and they made our experience beyond wonderful. We're a hard-to-please crowd and they made us feel welcomed, heard and like our silly questions and complicated orders were valid. What a pleasure to be served by these professionals. We will come back not only for dependable food, but for great service. Walton told us his favorite dishes and cheerfully gave us whatever condiments we requested. The only one that works in that entire restaurant is the bartender, all the other ones want to do is joke around play grab ass and sneak out back and get stoned. We saw at least three different groups get up and leave because they had ordered but never got anything.. My advice would be to drug test people while at work or raise their pay to attract quality people that don't live in their parent's basement. My wife and I stopped in since we were staying the night hoping to relax for a small bite and a few beers. Needless to say we could not have been more disappointed. When we arrived we sat at the bar. There was one other person seated down from us and the place was fairly empty. After waiting for a good 10 minutes finally someone came and asked if we had been waited on. We ordered a beer and asked for a menu. The beers came and we looked over the menu and decided what to order. The bartender basically ignored us and after we finished our beers we finally had to push the empty bottles to the end to get her attention. She finally came back and we ordered food and another beer. She brought the beers and another server brought us our food. The food was OK and the bartender finally came back and brought our check as if she was hurrying us out. Keep in mind that the place was empty. We ordered a final beer and I paid the check as we were ready to go to the hotel. Both times I stood at the door for 5 minutes because the hostess was mia, service was horrible and SLOW, my wine glass both visits had previous lip stains on it, food is mediocre for the price, and I had the worst gluten free pizza ever; the toppings were so sparse it was pitiful. We waited :20 minutes to be waited on, another :20 minutes for our drinks, another 1/2 hour for the crappy pizza, 10 minutes for plates, and another :15 minutes for our check. I've been going to BJ's for years and all over the country; especially in CA. I've come to this location twice and it's just been a disaster. I guess they can't keep employees? I don't know what's going on but it took me almost 15 minutes to be greeted by the bartender and when I ordered my food Togo, yes it was 45 minutes before close this time, there was no soup. And I said I'll just take it cold and heat it up. I also ordered the California chicken sandwich and it came with no avocado. I went back 3 days later and ordered the avocado egg rolls...they came out cold. The bartender remade them for me and they were good. I then ordered the California chicken sandwich and it came out with no avocado, again. I told the bartender and she fixed it for me and then said the manager would like my email address to send me a courtesy card? And nothing has been sent. Declined service with my service dog. Apparently the manager "looked it up on his phone" and said my dog isn't a service dog. They also sent a worker out to deny us service: my service dog is a cardiac alert canine that has saved my life more than once, and yes he is papered and professionally trained. It's not awful, but not worth coming... way overpriced for the food, it's not terrible in taste But it doesn't taste as much as it cost. I do not hand out one star reviews lightly, but with all due respect to this establishment, it deserves this review. I have not eaten in house here before, I did do a take out order, however, and the food just wasn't good. We ordered a ribeye and it was burned, not even close to the medium rare that we requested. The mashed potatoes were fine, but not flavorful. The side salad was probably the best part but even that just didn't taste all that good. The only reason why I would ever go back here is for the famous pizookie, but they aren't good enough to justify paying for this poor quality food again. Save your money and go anywhere else in Charlottesville. Thankfully food came out within a decent time, but of course it was cold and the only thing that was semi hot was our luke warm pizza. Fries tasted left over from lunch rush. So look for that Yelp event nearby. Now to the Eating. First, it's about the Drink. Six or seven beers paired. Blonds and Reds (and brunettes?-- er, Porter). Thought it was about hair colors ina 60's commercial at the start. But they are Interesting beers- and paired with deep fried Brussel sprouts in a chili/sweet hot sauce. And a fruit and green salad. And with a parmesan chicken-- welcome in it's simplicity (no goopy cheezy drip, thank goodness )- with a beer that tasted older coffee on a burner- in a Good way. And the most interesting. A salty and caramel cookie- yes a cliché- with vanilla ice cream-- still a cliché- - - but paired with a proper bitter Porter. Now That was Something. Whole new view of bitter. Let the prior flights land but take off with the Porter cum cookie combo. I'll be back for another look at this brewhouse, yes. It's not haute and it doesn't aim or pretend. I'm normally a fan of BJs but this was a major disappointment. The first red flag should have been that it was almost empty on a Thursday evening. Despite being virtually empty it took a good ten minutes for my server to show up. I ordered salmon which arrived undercooked. To be fair it wasn't bad enough to make a big fuss, but still disappointing. The one bright spot was the dessert. PLEASE READ potential customers and corporate. As a boomer, a person that has lived in this area my entire life and has retired from this industry I think this is Important for me to write. I don't usually post reviews nor do I use them to decide where to dine. I ask a friend to dine with me in this location and her response is why I post this. She ask "why would I want to eat here, the reviews are not good?" So I stumbled my way to them, and through them and was moved to post this. As a former restaurant manager in this area I can tell you a lot about this area and my personal experiences. More people than not complain on line and/or to the chains personal review process to get something out of it. A refund, a free meal and or gift card as we as an industry in this area has taught them to do so. I can also tell you in the state of Virginia servers make $2.13 an hour and SURVIVE on tips. So giving such bad service so often doesn't quite make sense does it? Granted every industry has issues once in a while but if given the chance in person to correct or fix the issue, I find that they do, and do so willing and thankfully for giving them the opportunity to do it. My personal experiences here in this location for the last 5 years or so have been good experiences. The atmosphere and service here is great in my humble opinion. The rare issues I have had, has been promptly rectified at the time of my visit not after it. As with all service industry jobs you do see some not so busy all the time, but more than not I see servers and management personnel working diligently to provide a good overall experience for all their customers. So for those of you that read reviews to decide where to eat, EAT HERE! If the menu has something your looking for and your out to dine just to dine I don't think you will regret it. Also, leave a good review as we ALL are quick to complain but not compliment. If your bad review was truly a terrible experience I apologize as it's not been my own on dozens and dozens of visits. If your review is left just to get something free, give the staff a chance to give it to you free onsite. Your online negative reviews are affecting people's ability to support themselves and also makes them look bad to the off site corporate office that doesn't know them or work with them daily. At the very least they are out in the job market and trying to contibute. I personally doubt they come to work to make $2.13 an hour and fail so badly. My personal reviews are given with my patronage and my tips not on line (with this exception). There is to much pressure and real issues in the world for such negativity. If you personally have a bad experience don't go back it's that simple. Maybe it was just an off day not something a business strives for daily I can assure you. BJs used to be a consistent and decent restaurant to get lunch...the last two visits have been very disappointing. Went to BJs with the work crew - it's good to see the staff here are wearing gloves and masks to protect themselves and others during the Covid pandemic. We were seated at a table and appropriately spaced 6' or more from other people. There were five tables getting food and we were one of the five tables. We were seated timely by a very friendly staff and given beverages while we looked at the menu. After ordering is when everything went downhill. It did not take too long to receive our orders but when we did receive them 2 of 3 dishes were already cold (both Nashville chicken sandwiches and fries). The third person had chicken broccoli fettuccine. The fettuccine was warm so I assume that's why everything else was cold. No excuse though, there were only 4 other tables in the building and every party was less than 5. Now to the quality... The fries taste great when they are hot but are still edible when they are cold, especially when they are paired with BJs BBQ sauce (if you are into that it's also amazing with their burgers and wings). The chicken on the Nashville sandwich was unusually small (like kid meal small) and was definitely swallowed up by a huge monster bun, see pictures below). In one of my photos you can see how much bread was leftover. I definitely would say the chicken was too small before stating the bread was too large. It was edible but a waste of the $17 me and one other paid. That $17 was without tip and covered the $3 unlimited teas we got with our meals. The courteous wait staff on the floor are the only reason I gave this visit a 2 star. Management needs to address the quality issues that seem to be stressed in a lot of this locations negative reviews. read more
