The food was excellent. The service was great. They honor the reservations. The food was a little bit pricey.

I brought my husband and three teenage kids here for a return to college dinner celebration 1-20-22. I reserved an igloo for 7. We had the best time!! The food was spot on for upscale bar food appetizers and then burgers, calzone and seafood platter were all devoured! Finally, dessert! My son raved and raved about his candy-bacon-sundae; honestly I've never seen him swoon over ANY food as he did this dessert!!! We all were completely surprised by his sudden animation from a fairly stoic guy! We are huge Gifford fans so we heartedly indulged in ice cream while the temps outside said "feels like 12 degrees". The igloo warmed up w 5 of us in it but as the night broached 9pm the temps were out-pacing us. Service was great and we knew how hard it was for them because we noticed indoor servers seemed sparse and those there were hustling! What a terrific evening. It used to be very good. Prices have gone way up and now they put a cold cut style "chicken" in many items that say "grilled chicken," such as quesadillas and gyros (and they're Greek!). I'm afraid to leave a review as I used to waitress here. Let's start by saying the food was AMAZING as always. The bar(where we sat) however was another story! The bartender obviously had friends who were sitting at the bar and it was incredibly loud and boisterous, they were whooping it up (bartender included) over conversations they were having. At one point one of the bartenders friends went behind the bar, took get a a menu or whatever but really?! Super nice to do the igloo experience, it's rather warm during the cold weather. You do have to pay $10 per person if you make a reservations for the igloos and that will not be added onto your food bill unfortunately and no refunds if someone isn't able to come. It does have a plasticy smell inside so be aware if that's something that you're particular with. Could be a little nicer inside like add decorations. The food was fine, the sliders could have been presented with more detail like at added garnish or some ranch on the side. Decent portions with the fried pickles and nachos. Clam chowder was good just a tad salty but that be worked on in the next batch. read more

Took my teenaged niece to the Black & White Grille for dinner this evening. She said her Lobster Casserole ($30.99) was excellent. I had a Very small House Salad: a bowl of lettuce with a cherry tomato and some onion slices for $7.99. Not worth $4.99. My Fisherman's Platter had delicious scallops and shrimp, but the fish was previously frozen, not fresh, and not very tasty. If the fish had been fresh it probably would have been worth the $33.99 price. The interior of the restaurant is quite nice. Our server, Jennifer, was very good. read more

One would think after so many years in the food business that they would be getting better at at making the simple things like onion rings. Greasy, squishy, and a batter that crumbles off when you touch one. And a $34 lobster roll with to much mayo and soggy lettuce shoved into a standard size hot dog roll soaked in butter. They already had 2 strikes against them for horrible service, one of which was simply looking to purchase from the desert case and being totally ignored so I left. Update. So the waitress also mixed up my father in law's credit card with some other dude's credit card. The manager used my phone number used to make a reservation to call and left a message, lying to try and get me to call back saying my husband's credit card got declined. Which makes NO sense--how does someone leave a restaurant without making sure the payment went through? I mentioned it to my in laws who are now delivering some dude who is going back to Texas's credit card to him in a snow storm. Like seriously. The only thing that didn't go wrong as far as I know are health food violations or name calling by the staff. Would not recommend. read more

We went to Black and White Grille the other day. What a great place! Staff was awesome! Very big and assorted menu that satisfies even picky eaters. I didn't know what to get, so I just got a burger which was really good. She got the chicken shish-kabob, and she thought it was excellent! Pretty good craft and local beer selection as well. I have been to the Black & White Grille a few times. I recently moved to Spencer, MA in June of 2018. I have had the lobster casserole, a burger, and of course ICE CREAM (s' mores). I have to say, this is by far one of my FAVORITE restaurants around! The food is reasonably priced, the staff is AWESOME and super friendly, and the food is AMAZING! Everything we ordered came out perfectly. Appetizers, drinks, food, and desert are to die for. I highly recommend anyone looking for a delicious meal to go to the Black & White Grille. We have been to the Black and White several times and alway love the food, drinks and service. We ordered take out tonight and when my daughter brought it home we were disappointed because they forgot our 2 pieces of dessert that we paid for. I called to tell them and they said they would give us our money back but I told them my daughter would come pick them us but we are like 20 minutes away. He was very nice and said that's fine. No problem and I was happy with that then he called back a minute later and said we'd love to deliver those to you. I was shocked and very happy they went above and beyond. A friend and I went to B&W on Monday and the food was good as usual but there was a surprise in store. I had received a gift card from this local and independent restaurant in December of 2023. When the bill came, there were two prices - one for cash, the other for cards (it did NOT say credit cards,just cards) Sure enough when I asked the server I was told the gift card, which they issued, would come under the card category and I would pay extra for them having received the cash earlier. So the moral of the story is if you don't like someone too much, get them a gift card to the Black and White. read more

I haven't ate inside, but I will say some of the young hotesses are definitely eye candy But, I digress. The food is hit or miss. Pizza's are good (ask for well done if you like it a little crispy). My wife got some chix fingers which she enjoyed. However, the clam chowder was kinda gross! Upon opening the foam cup, oil (Oil??) was settling on the top of the chowder. I've been here a few times and the food is okay. Nothing to write home about. It's a local spot that is decently busy because there are no other restaurants nearby. I went there today (day before Thanksgiving) at around 12:30pm. It was at about at 1/2 capacity and we were seated quickly and our server got us our drinks. Me and my girlfriend ordered an appetizer, a BLT and a burger. Nothing too difficult to whip up during lunchtime. Then it starts to get busy and a party of 12 show up. I then realize that our waiter is waiting on everyone by himself and handling things in the bar area. 55 minutes later we get our BLT and burger. They're both cold and my bun is soaked. Fries where the same and pieces of lettuce on the BLT are brown and it's without mayonnaise. I wanted to complain but the waiter was busy so I left enough to cover the bill in cash along with a tip. As we're leaving he looks at us like we're skipping out on the bill. I told him the cash was on the table and that the food was cold and just walked out. I don't blame the waiter. I blame the management/owner. You should be properly staffed and give the waiter some respect. As long winded as that was, I'll sum it up: I wasted an hour of my time and $45. Always a great meal here. My most recent trip was to meet some family from down south for a meal. We had a large party of 12 and were meeting on a Friday night, so we made reservations. Almost no wait time and we sat down with our full party. I don't think anyone in our party disliked their meal. It was, as always, great comfort food. I had an appetizer of fried buffalo chicken rangoons. These are my go-to at B&W. I ordered a clam dinner and it was perfect. Great breading, large clams and plenty of tasty fries. No dessert for me as I was stuffed! Service was on point for our 2 servers. They rocked it. The only thing keeping it from 5 stars is the noise level. B&W is always loud. The Black & White has great food & comes in generous servings, but also has maintained as normal as possible business hours during this unnerving Pandemic of chaos, loss & fear, as well as extreme change in all that we do & know; which is honestly a huge deal to myself, as well as MANY people I know, bc the majority of businesses (including restaurant/takeout/delivery) all suddenly started closing @ sundown; even once things calmed down drastically- which was EXTREMELY frustrating Bc you couldn't go out to or pick up food @ most places past like 6/7pm sometimes a little later, but I can think of SEVERAL TIMES I had called The Black & White to get hours, JUST IN CASE, & was told by their friendly staff that they were open til' 11pm on weekends still etc., which was amazingly refreshing. **Now the last thing that NEEDS to be said is re. The Black & White's ice cream....Which is ABSO-FREAKIN-LUTELY DELICIOUS! & I'm a little [Ok..ALOT!] obsessed w/ it! (especially the Cotton Candy flavored! ) They also offer so much variety as far as what they have; milkshakes/frappes, to assorted types of sundaes, to a lengthy list of awesome flavors of the best hard serve ice cream, to a lengthy list of frozen yogurts that are just as tasty(but much healthier!) to certain allergy safe items as well! we arrived and did not have a reservation. we did ask and were seated in the igloos. there were 2 servers working in the igloo section. one was amazing and we wish he was our server. the other, Jess, was beyond slow. upon her greeting us, we asked for a dessert menu. when she came back 10 minutes later to take the drink order, she didn't have the dessert menu. finally after 20 minutes, we were able to order dessert. we were there for 45 minutes before we had food. Jess is insanely slow. we only received our food because one of us called. then it took her another 10 minutes to come back with my credit card. I just handed it to her without the bill because we all had to get home. I understand that the igloos are probably incredibly inconvenient. if that is the case, close them. or have a strong server who can multitask overseeing them. what should have been quick drinks and dessert turned into 1.5 hours. read more

My husband and I have been coming here for years and we have always enjoyed it. Unfortunately, last Saturday may have been the last time. I called Saturday and made reservations for 5pm, I also specifically asked to sit in the bar area as this was my husband and I's date night out without the children. We showed up at 4:50 and the host said it would be a few minutes, no problem at all. 5:36 and finally they are ready to seat us, the host brings us to a table in the first room with families and crying children, I told him we were supposed to sit in the bar area and he said it was full and there was no note of that on the reservation. Fine whatever, we sit and order drinks and soups. I ordered a Jack Frost cocktail and the waitress came over and said they ran out of glasses and asked if she could put my drink in a mason jar? No problem. She brought my drink out and it was literally a shot of pineapple juice with coconut flakes on top. This was a 10$ drink and I was not happy. I drank it in 2 sips and she came back and asked if I wanted another.. uhm, no thanks! I'll just have a water please. Time passes, finally she brings out our French onion soups and they were ice cold. She apologized and that was that. My husband ordered the lobster casserole which he said was good, except the mashed potatoes we were cold. I got the shrimp scampi and for the price it was ridiculous. The waitress asked what pasta I wanted and I said linguini, when she brought it out it was undercooked penne pasta that was drenched in melted butter with 4 shrimp thrown on top. There was NO flavor whatsoever, not even garlic. Honestly, I never complain but this was just awful. Everything about the experience was horrendous. I don't know if the cook just forgot to put tomatoes or something in it but for the price it was a joke. I have lived in Spencer for well over 25 years and couldn't tell you how many times I have been at the Black and White. I have always been very pleased with the food as well as the service. But I'm the kind of person who doesn't expect everything in my world to always be perfect. Yes I will agree if you are in a rush don't go during there busy hours. But as far as giving a well known restaurant a poor review over a spoon that didn't come out of the dishwasher perfect is complete foolishness. If you can't understand that life isn't always perfect or correctable then by all means stay home and make your own diner then you will only have yourself to blame for human error. There honestly isn't anything I don't enjoy about dining there so for me it's worth the wait because apparently a lot of other people love it as well. read more

Have only been a regular at the B&W for a year now as we just moved to Paxton. I have had the best food and service than most restaurants in Worcester and Boston. The place is always busy so product is incredibly fresh! Salmon is always awesome with a caprese salad and always Blackened perfect medium. Also great over Caesar. Britt is my favorite server and remembered my order the 2nd time I visited. They are currently doing some exterior renovations and the guy is doing quality work.
