Dinner service 7/8/2026 8:30pm . Pros - great parking, immediate seating, friendly service, extensive menu, decent prices, fun decor & gift shop, well known for their pies. Meal was good, I should have had my bread toasted on the hot turkey open-faced sandwich, but that's my bad. Cobbler was a generous full mini-pie! . Cons - Unfortunately, someone had loosened the peppermill before and when I turned it over, my plate was covered with whole peppercorns! I attempted to pick them off but there were just too many and when the server noticed he immediately offered a replacement to be sent out quickly. Nicole slaw was very weak on flavor and dry? I might ask for a side of mayonnaise next time because I do usually enjoy coleslaw. I've been to this restaurant now 4 times, 3 in this weekend alone. In fact I'm sitting here waiting for our order now which is what is inspiring me to write this review at this particular moment. The first time I came here we had amazing service although I don't know who my server was and our food was quite delicious. I'm here this weekend visiting my daughter and this is just a very convenient restaurant in close proximity to where she lives as well as having a very diverse menu. Was dying to try the hot turkey sandwich which I did and was very disappointed that it came with clotted gravy it appeared to have been sitting there for quite some time which I did not eat. Took home a piece of chocolate cake which I was also dying to try only to discover that it was dry and ended up throwing it away. There was a very young server that was quite pleasant on our second trip however our first trip this weekend and the one today where I sit as we speak were older and quite crabby and acted like their job was killing them to do. Today's order and experience kind of matched our waitress. Very poor. Had to ask for water three times, have to send back my daughter's drink as it was incorrect, waitress brought us somebody else's order. When ours finally came mine was not quite right but at this point decided not to send it back as we're on sort of a time limit this morning. I think I've gotten this place out of my system. There are a number of other restaurants in this area when we come to visit that I think I will be frequenting instead. Black Bear is a small restaurant chain out of California. The restaurant is large with tables and booths and can handle large parties. Kid friendly and Vegan choices on the menu. They have TVs and a full bar, along with bear themes all thru the place. Breakfast is served all day. I opted for the Chicken Fried Steak with scrambled eggs, side of hashbrowns and toast. The steak was coated and seasoned well, the gravy was decent. Scrambled eggs were a little browned, but not too bad. I wasn't asked how I wanted them cooked. Hash browns were crispy but moist. Everything on the plate was hot, which means freshly cooked. It did take some time to wait on the food, but it was fairly busy and it didn't seem like they had enough staff. They put in faults order times and failed to make the food on time. Ultimately, it causes Dashers to have to unassigned the orders and customers do not get their order on time! I had a very disappointing experience at Black Bear Diner. Our table waited about an hour just to get our drinks, which is far too long. It made the entire meal frustrating and took away from what should have been an enjoyable dining experience. I understand restaurants can get busy, but waiting an hour for drinks is unacceptable. After a long flight we decided to choose the Black Bear Diner. Upon walking in the place looks nice, open floor with tables and booths a little further back. To the right there is a tree for kids to go in and a wall with business gear. We walked in to an employee who was vacuuming and completely disregarded our entrance or wait. Just continued to vacuum. Nice to see the house cleaning was being done. Once we, party of five, were finally seated, having never been to Idaho prior, much less this restaurant the waitress seemed impatient. I did not find the menu very easy to read at all. It took me a little longer to choose. Two of the very picky kids choose the chicken tenders with fries, another orders the Paw Bear Chicken Fried Steak, I don't recall the other meal and I ordered the Slow Cooked Pot Roast. When I was asked what two sides I wanted I said "mashed potatoes" and she quickly said "and green beans!?!". To which I declined, yuck! The food was good. The portion sizes were good and the food was hot. The service, certainly questionable. Even though the food was good this certainly would not be my first choice if ever returning to Idaho. read more

We come regularly on Saturdays & despite it being the weekend, we usually get in pretty quickly. There's usually a big group of us with a mix of adults and children. We've never had any problems with service or food. Everything has been tasty and no complaints from anyone. The servers are friendly & the facility is kept clean, despite the amount of business they do on the weekends. The kid's menu is adorable & the breakfast menu is delicious. If the wait is long, there's a mini kid's corner with toys inside & some fun attractions for the kids to play with in the front of the restaurant. Visited June 13. 2026 before show at Morrison Center. Cole was a very good waiter. The gift shop is cute. We ordered two breakfast entrees. The Cinnamon French Toast was awful. Your linecook burnt (blackened) the French toast and served it anyway! He just flipped the unburnt side face up I asked my daughter why she wasn't eating. She showed me how burnt it was. I called Cole to the table and he apologized and took the plate and brought back a new order. You should check your schedule because this line cook should be written up. We really like this restaurant but this was unacceptable and could easily have been avoided. read more

Mgmt of this Black Bear Diner needs to realize they need improvement unless this day was just a bad day for them. We've ate at many before this in every state but this Black Bear Diner gets 1 star. I ordered chicken dinner for my husband and for me a baked potato and side salad to go to take back to our hotel. I was told it would be ready in 30 minutes. We showed up 30 minutes later and told her I have a call in order for a pickup order. Waited for 10 minutes until I finally asked again about my pickup order. They couldn't locate it. He said did you call this restaurant. I said yes. Pulled up my recent call and said here it is and I called it has we were standing there and their phone rang so I said that proves I called it in here. So I'm trying to be understanding so they said they'll put my order in right now. Then they came back and told me they are out of baked potatoes and I'll have to order something else. So I said ok still trying to be understanding and ordered the salmon dinner with my 2 sides broccoli and side salad. Order is finally given to me to go and I said to him how with this screw up could have happened and laughed and said the restaurant should give me a free dessert. Theguy tells me they can't do that and plus people here have been waiting for their food an hour. I said what. Now my understanding with the order not so much now at this point. I said really what does the hour wait here have to do with my order I called in and now its an hour at this point for me. It clearly shows management of this Black Bear Diner has problems because every Black Bear Diner in every state we've ate at we rated 5 star. This one in Boise 1 star! And I only give Yelp reviews if it's good. Don't feel the need if it's not good but this experience was something else. Also when we left because at this point I should have but didn't check the bag and we get back to our hotel and realized they forgot to put my 2 sides the broccoli and salad for my order and also there were no utensils or napkins in the bag. This was our first time here. I got pancakes, bacon and eggs. Their bacon is really good, a lot of meat versus fat. My pancakes were undercooked on the inside so I ate around the outside edges. Our server did a great job, she was efficient and friendly! I have to admit that it was a little hard watching a guy with a long beard carrying out plates of food.
