Very disappointed with our visit. I've been coming to Black Bear diner for 5 years and used to go every Sunday for breakfast. Black Bear was my favorite place because they gave a lot of food and the hash browns were so good! I hadn't been to black bear in months since COVID. The whole breakfast was horrible. The has browns especially were terrible. They advertise thick cut hash browns and that's how they always were until now! They looked like shredded fried onions, did not look like hash browns at all. They were very dry and crispy and the biscuit looked over cooked as well. Service was not great either. There were maybe 10 people in there and took a half hour to get our food. It never took that long to get food before when the whole place was packed. This used to be my absolute favorite place for breakfast with 5 stars but now sadly I'm giving it 1 star. I don't know what's happening back there in the kitchen but they need to do some damage control quick bc this place is going down in the dump. Our server had no tact at all when I told her I'd like the country potatoes instead bc I didn't like the hash browns she yelled as loud as she could to the cooks and said "I need country potatoes, because they didn't like the hash browns!!" After she had argued with me that there was nothing different about the hash browns. Maybe she's new there and the hash brown have always looked crappy but as someone who has gone to Black Bear for the past 5 years regularly, I can attest that they have NOT BEEN LIKE THAT. We love this place for breakfast! Pancakes and bacon are delicious. We were a little disappointed with our service this time, the waitress never refilled our coffee, or brought us extra butter ( we asked twice for). We felt a little ignored by her, but she was really chatty and attentive to the other tables she was waiting. We are very understanding that times are weird right now, but we tip really well( sometimes even 50% of our bill) the fact that we were kind of ignored left a bad taste with us, we did not tip well this time around. Not sure if it was because we were a younger couple with our kids, but she seemed to pay attention to the older crowd a lot more.. other than that, the food is always good and we have never had an issues until this one time. read more

This place was awesome ! It smelt like a real diner when we walked in and they certainly delivered on that smell ! The burger I ordered was juicy and the fries with it were just what I was craving ! The service was amazing. The waitress was totally in her game that afternoon! Loved the lodge atmosphere and our daughter loved the wooden bears throughout the front ! Oh and the cool juke box up front she went nuts for ! Great for kids and families and very well priced ! Love it when we find awesome places like this ! Black Bear Diner is a nice local chain to have a change from the Denny's and IHOPS of the world! It has a family setting feel and is near themed, as AZ is known for its Black Bear habitants. The service is fun, up beat and accurate. Our waitress was very patient with the kids and tending to their needs. I had egg whites and toast with fruit, very filling, my bf has a chicken fried steak which he enjoyed. The menu is like a newspaper and it filled with a simple menu of appetizers, breakfast, lunch and dinner. The kids meal is also concise. The orange juice is fresh squeezed and delicious! The restaurant was clean and environment is comfortable with a cabin feel to it. If you are in the Phx area, grab some breakfast or brunch at Black Bear Diner. Bread had mold on it and they kept bringing me sweet tea when I ordered unsweetened tea. After the 4th time, I asked for water. I rarely send food back but ugh! We decided to try again. This time they forgot to put in our order while the waitress chatted with all the other coworkers. When she realized she forgot to put in the order she didn't bother to tell us. After 40 minutes of trying to get her attention she finally came to the table and told us what happened. I asked for the check to pay for the drinks as I was on a time crunch and she got really snotty and said "Well, I'm not going to have you pay for food you didn't get." My reply was that I would like to pay for our drinks and leave and she said, again rudely, that it would be no charge. Again, I rarely send food back, I generally am very understanding and forgiving of human error, but both visits made me think that customer service training is needed at this establishment along with common courtesy. Let's face it you know what you want when you aim for a diner. This ain't no elegant affair. And it's on target. This is a hometown style, family-friendly diner with all the comfort food you'll need at a fair price. Service quality has been iffy lately, which usually speaks to a management issue. But I have never had a bad meal here. Slow service, dispassionate service, but the food has always been tasty. The atmosphere is a bit on the dark and dingy side. Check out the menu online. There's plenty to choose from. And whatever you get, you're likey to be taking some home in a carry out box. The portions are huge. For breakfast, I'm a fan of the Pancakes and the Biscuit & Country Gravy with 2 Slices of Thick-Cut Smoked Bacon. Toward lunch time love the Open Faced Hot Turkey sandwich. For dinner, it's the chicken fried chicken... they call it: Hand-Breaded Crispy Chicken Breast. Exceptionally tasty. I'm looking forward to a future Friday so I can try the Fish Fry. I was very excited to try this restaurant it has been on my list for awhile now and decided to give it a shot. Due to Covid I decided to call in the order for take out and I am very glad that I did. The diner was packed, there were some tables purposely left empty however because of how congested the diner is to begin with social distancing is pretty much impossible. The line to get into the diner was packed, you could feel the persons breath behind you. And the line to pay was even worse. We were all basically shoulder to shoulder and basically there wasn't even a big space between the two lines. After picking up my order, I go home and I am anxious to try the sandwich. I ordered the grilled chicken avocado club because I was craving avocado. My entire drive back to my place all I kept doing was imagining how great it would taste. And maybe it would have tasted good?? But due to the fact that they didn't give me the correct sandwich I will never know. I decide to call the diner so that we can rectify this mishap. The phone rang, and rang and rang and rang, no one picked up so I hung up and wait for a few minutes and call again. And it was the same result it just kept ringing endlessly. So I wait than try again (at this point I felt like the little engine that could "I think I can, I think I can"....) and miraculously after the 3rd ring someone picked up the phone....YAY!!! And than immediately they hung on me. I decided to try again, giving the employee the benefit of the doubt that maybe it was accidental. Nope....it was no accident because they did that 3 more times to me. Obviously at this point, I am very fed up. I just find it unbelievable that no one would pick up the phone to rectify the fact that I paid for food that I am unable to eat. I still am in disbelief. The amount of time that it takes the employee to pick up the phone and than hang up on me would basically have been the same amount of time, if they just asked me to please hold and not hang up. We are all going through a hard time right now and I am understanding of that. And like other people, I don't have the money to go out and get from a restaurant. I think this place is OK. The food is decent and the service is fine. However, in all fairness, I have only eaten breakfast here a few times so I cannot comment on the lunch and dinner items on their menu. I especially like one of their breakfast menu items, which is the Portuguese sausage and eggs option. The sausage is tasty and a nice big one at that. They also have ala carte breakfast options on their menu, but no option for additional eggs. Most of their breakfast choices come with two eggs, but for me personally, I would like to add an additional egg or two. All-in-all, I think this place is OK. read more

The food is really sad and poorly cooked. The biscuits are burnt on the outside and undercooked on the inside. The gravy is under seasoned. The breakfast potatoes are undercooked and there is zero portion control. There is just too much of some items and not enough of others. 4 people with 4 bad meals. What a joke. Came in with family 11/25. Sat down for about 20 minutes, no one came to our table. A nice gentleman who actually wants to do his job named Cameron, came over and took our table because a server named Jen didn't want to take our table since she was in a hurry to leave, but still went to take a woman's order that came in after us about 15 minutes later and immediately took her order. She had a table next to us, food served and good to go. Didn't acknowledge we were there. After Cameron came for our drink orders she comes over and says " Do you guys need something to drink". No Hello, how you doing , no smile , just a shit grin on her face. After I said a nice gentleman came to take our order she said great and gave us a thumbs up and immediately walked away. We spoke to Cameron and she told him to take our table because she wanted to leave. He apologized we had to wait so long because of a server who was in a hurry to leave. There was no need for her to come 40 minutes later and ask if we needed drinks with a shit face on. I spoke to the manager , to let him know she was trash server. I said she should just clock out and leave if she's done taking customers when we came in. The manager wasn't so great neither with his words and professionalism. He just offered some pie, which we won't eat. We thanked Cameron for taking care of us. He was amazing. Still served us with respect and a smile even though he goes through hell with Jen. Definitely won't be going back to that location. First time at this location. The lobby is very cute with all the Black Bear "merch"and the yummy desserts and bear claws. The woman that sat us was very friendly and running this place bussing tables and she also rang us out at the end, she was awesome, maybe a manager. So, now on to our dining experience. Daniel was our server, he was definitely way overwhelmed on this day. He was trying to fix problems at his other table so it did take him about 15 minutes to even come to our table, to get drink order. Time to order, Daniel starts off by say what the restaurant is out of "a lot of stuff" mixed veggies and some other things, takes the order and ends by telling us our order was going to take a really long time due to the the bigger groups. I mention this because I thought "great what did we just sit down to", and it didn't even apply to us we ordered breakfast. Maybe just wait to say something if the items are ordered. I'm a customer just here to dine I don't need to know that the restaurant is having all these problems. The food arrives in a timely manner and looks great! I ordered the Eggs Benedict with spinach ,tomatoes, avocado and bacon. It was delicious! We also ordered Chicken Fried Steak and Eggs with a side of bacon and biscuits with gravy both great. The egg were over cooked and lost of brown. All the food was hot, giant size portions and tasty. No problems!! We will come back for the food, the customer service was completely different from start to finish. The lady that cashed us out also sold us some of the deliciously famous bear claws. read more

First time I've been disappointed. Had the usual, eggs, bacon, but thought I'd try the sausage biscuits and gravy. Very floury tasting and I only saw one piece of sausage in the entire serving. When I make my sausage and gravy, I use a pound of sausage per two person serving. Next time I'll stick with the pancakes as my side. read more

Extremely busy @ 11:30 AM this morning. On a wait list- had about a 30 minute delay. Got seated in a big booth : we were a party of 6. Our server was Janna - sweetest, most seasoned waitress ever! Loved her! I had the Ruben sandwich you have a choice of a side. I went with the salad. It came separate from the meal ( like that) and was a good size! The sandwich was tasty & I couldn't finish. My husband had the Grizz which is one of the most popular breakfast meals ordered. He enjoyed it. Other meals ordered in our party was: Cinnamon French Toast, 3 HUGE Pancakes, Bigfoot Chicken Fried Steak & Eggs, Bear's Choice & Joe's Hobo Omelette. EVERYTHING was delicious! BIG portions for the price. Many of us had to take the rest of our meals home. A must have : get a biscuit when you come dine. They're the most gigantic ones you'll ever see. Hight, light, flaky & fluffy, made fresh "in house" every morning! They're the BOMB!! FYI- they have green chili. It's an extra charge, but the prefect addition to any style eggs! It's located at a gas station. I don't usually eat at gas station diners but it got good reviews so we tried it. First of all Trish, our waitress, was very friendly and helpful with choosing our dinners. She was pleasant and quick. My husband got the chicken fried steak and I got the pot roast. This place would get 5 stars for me if it didn't sell T Shirts. They're trying a little too hard to brand what, at it's core, is really good diner breakfast food with great portions, and to me, that speaks for itself. I came in and sat at the counter. The staff was really friendly and I didn't wait at all to be seated. I ordered something that apparently consisted of most of the menu. Eggs, hash browns, bacon, ham, sausage, pancakes and a slice of watermelon (and I feel like I'm still forgetting something). It was all really good and the portion was enormous. After a year of not going out to a sit down restaurant we choose to go to Black Bear Diner on Baseline in Gilbert. I so disappointed to find out they no longer have a Gluten Free Buns for a gluten free cheeseburger. I always look forward to their wonderful Cheeseburgers. I don't know what exactly they do but they were the best. The meal I had was good, but I had to order it without gravy which meant it was just good, not wonderful. So if you don't need to eat Gluten Free, it is a good place to go, but no longer is it a great place to go if you need to eat Gluten Free. read more

This place is perfect if you're looking for a huge grossly satisfying breakfast! The burgers and sammiches are pretty great too but the breakfast takes it. Great country fried steak! Sometimes it's too much food, and I like that. The price is right too. It can get busy of course during the Saturday and Sunday rush but that's to be expected. I do wish the menus, tables and general surfaces were cleaner though. It does feel dirty and sticky in there often. read more

I have been going to black bear for a few years now. They consistently have good food and nice size portions.

We went two weeks ago had poor service called to let them know how bad the waitress was. Called and spoke to the manager and she understood and stated that they take complaints seriously she wanted to compensate us for our meals. She got my address and I haven't received anything. Apparently they don't take complaints seriously. I would have appreciated something for the bad service we received being our first time at this restaurant. When we walked out we were talking about the bad service and a child came running outside throwing up, so what does that say to customers coming in the door. read more

I really like this place! For all the food you get and the little pay it is soo worth the drive But we stopped in there on 3/1/19 and I ordered the fish fry and of course my husband ordered the chicken fried steak ( he's a Texan) he liked his but when I got my fish, oh my, they r e a l l y need to change out their oil! I got my fish so blacken and oily that I could only stomach 1 piece and not to mention their cole slaw ( no taste) just like eating the veggies raw in a little bowl. We are regulars, try to go a couple Sundays a month. The last few times it's been crowded and food was not as it had been in the past... but today... we walked in and were sat, our favorite waitress, Brandy, got our order in and we were done in 40 minutes!!! It was like a Christmas miracle... but after Christmas. The food was perfect. Biscuits were HUGE!! It was a great start to the day. But I asked for the club on the light menu and got a huge portion of fries and sandwich which was dry very little mayo on it. Which is why the rating.
