Ok let's start with what was good about the experience. Our waiter Roman was courteous and helpful. This was my first visit to Black Bear Diner and it will be my last. The place is RUNDOWN and the food is average at best. Strike two: had breakfast for dinner and the bacon was burned. Strike three: their waffle iron apparently broke while they were preparing our orders. The waffles were an up charge to our entrees and when the check came the up charge was still on the bill even though we had to settle for pancakes. The place wasn't busy but from our arrival till we received the check was an hour. No reason for such slow service. Weren't even comp'd our beverages since there was an issue in the kitchen. I was really excited to try this place after reading a Yelp review on a friend's FB. I went with my hubby on a weeknight and had to wait about 20 minutes to get a table. The server was nice, but I wouldn't call her attentive - drinks were empty for quite some time before she ever noticed and didn't check how the food came out until it was time to offer to bring our bill. The food itself was definitely home cookin' style. I ordered the chicken fried steak and it was pretty good - no complaints (but also not the best I've ever had... a bit too crunchy). Heard so much and read the reviews on Yelp, so I had to try it. Ordered the Turkey Dinner after confirming that they slice the turkey themselves. I got 2 small slices of round 1 1/2" thick turkey that I could not cut with my husbands steak knife. It came with potatoes and a white gravy that had no flavor. I showed the waitress that I could not cut my turkey and it was like a super overcooked pork chop. she did not seem surprised and just took the plate and offered me a piece of pie. They did remove the dinner from my check, but I was left hungry. We had to stop for me to eat on the way home. I try to be very open about places, but I won't go back. read more

One of my favorite places to do breakfast or brunch! I do like the selection of breakfast items as well as lunch items and you do get a loot of food for your money. The atmosphere is always fun. They usually have oldies playing in the restaurant lobby and the theme is a forest and old cabin-like restaurant. The cooking is country style breakfast and hearty. Whenever my husband and I want to fill up on a good breakfast we go here. If you do go, expect a 20-30 min wait on a Saturday or Sunday. They are worth it and do their best to seat you quickly! My In-law came in from Kingman, AZ to visit and took us out to eat. He loves Black Bear and first started to frequent these restaurants in Lake Havasu.... Unfortunately, he was dissapointed. The portions at this restaurant, although it is a chain, are smaller... same menu though... And as I write this review me and my wife are in bed sick (it must have been their food because it was the only thing we ate today). Love their coconut cream pie! I want to give them 5 stars. But, a couple of things have made it only 3. The food tastes great. The portions are ample. The prices are at the higher end for this type of food, but the portions kind of make up for that. I sometimes work nights, so it is nice to go there with my wife in the morning and she can have breakfast while I have dinner. The first time I went, it was worthy of 5 stars. The second visit was pretty good, but when I asked for their advertised dessert specialty, the banana split pie, I was told, "We have sold the last one and he (whoever that is) is not going to make any now." WTF The 3rd time and possibly the last time I was there Saturday, April 23, not only were they out of the same dessert, but also they were out of Balsamic salad dressing. I'm sorry to seem nit-picky, but running out of things is simply poor management. They are open 16 hours per day, every day, for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. It's not like things will go to waste. Now, if this was it, I would be at 4 stars, except the following issue is why I give only 3. This is a big restaurant with a lot of tables. The table service is pretty top-notch. WHY IN THE WORLD WOULD YOU HAVE YOUR GUEST'S LAST MEMORY BE STANDING IN LINE TO PAY? There is only one cash register for everyone paying. The first trip I had to wait while the person ahead of me had a credit card issue delaying the whole line, then the cashier answered the phone delaying me another 2 minutes while the line to pay grew behind me. The 2nd and 3rd times I had less of a wait, but it was frustrating...no one likes to stand in lines. Take a cue from Chili's and Olive Garden and get the pay-at-the-table kiosks. That is how you run a restaurant in 2015 and beyond. At least go to server based payment and you will be running a restaurant like 1996. The way you are running it now is simply out of touch with current trends and guest services. read more

Best Food, Best Value, Best Service, Best Dining Experience! You are welcomed by the wonderful smell of whatever it is they have cooking up at the time that can only be described as comforting. The menu is probably the best and worst part of the place. When you start reading the descriptions of the different options you realize that you WILL be coming back just to try the other wonderful menu items. During breakfast they serve you whatever you like for breakfast (even if it isn't on the menu). For lunch they will serve you a burger that will shine next to any "gourmet" burger or any of the other lunch items or any of the breakfast items as well! Breakfast for lunch is a win every time! Dinner is great as well. During dinner time they serve you anything off the menu including breakfast, lunch, and dinner. The service is quick and friendly and always ready to fill up your drink. Also, if you are having trouble picking an item, just ask and you can trust the recommendation. PRO TIP: Don't eat your entire meal. Plan to eat 1/3, or maybe 1/2 if you are really hungry. Desserts are a MUST at this place. Also, plan to share the dessert or plan to take it home because there is no way you will be eating an entire meal and the entire dessert. They were very slow to take our order and we had to get the manager to help us often. Not for celiac's, We had a party of 6. My brother loves their breakfasts, it was his birthday so we went here. I inquired as to their ability to provide gluten free options with the lady at the cash register. She stated we have three gluten free items: bun, brownie and a dressing. I asked if the lunch meat was gluten free, she stated I told you the three items we had. So I was reserved to watching my family eat. Ok. Well my father asked our waitress, she stated she has a good friend's mom that comes in and orders a burger with a gluten free bun. I asked if the kitchen uses different utensils when working with gluten free. She stated yes I make sure that they know its gluten free. So I ordered the burger with a salad since the fries have a shared fryer. Well my burger came out with my nieces sweet potato fries, my nieces dish had regular fries when she ordered sweet potato fries. The waitress said she would have the kitchen correct my order but faith in getting correct was now gone. They did remove my order from bill. My brother did have to request the remainder of his order (after 10 -15min) that was not brought out with all the other food. We did not go at a busy time 130-2pm on a Monday. read more

This place is super good! There is a lot of food for the price you pay. I ordered the small volcano and it came with 2 pancakes, an egg (any way you like it), sausage link, and one bacon. I also ordered a side of roasted potatoes and they were delicious. They were fried with onions and peppers as well. He pancake is super good. I must say, right now I am really sad! I typically love Black Bear Diner, but wow, this specific location has taken a nose dive in the last year or so! I usually come in the morning for breakfast and the staff during that shift are great! We always get quick service and the food has always been good. Now however, let's fast forward to the night shift. My hunny ordered the fish and chips, which the fish was cold in the center and the fries were merely warm-not hot. I got the chicken parmesan, which the sauce tasted as though it had sat in a warmer all day. I have not ever had a meal for 2 people that costed more than $35.00 only to have both of us be disappointed. Usually one can be bummed because we might not like what we picked, but to both be grossed out because the food was horrible - that's sad. And just trying to pay and leave was a battle. We stood at the register for almost 5 minutes waiting for a high school girl come up and provide some not great customer service. She had offered to get the manager, but if I didn't walk out at the moment I did, I might be in jail for showing her how disappointed I was. I refuse to be sneered at by some teenager with a dirty dish rag hanging out of her apron! Needless to say, we won't be visiting this location, at night, ever again! read more

I been coming here every other weekend for 7 years , if so every weekend with my kids. The waitresses know me, I know them and they're awesome. Unfortunately I will not be coming back because my truck got hit by someone in the parking and when I heard the manager talk about the type of truck that got hit, he confirmed that it was an f 150 and I asked him what color it was, he said it was white, but the color of the truck that got hit was gray and it was mine. He then told me that the customer comes in all the time, and he knows her. I just found out that state farm will not be paying for my truck, so I called him back to ask about this customer, and all of a sudden he doesn't know how she looks like, or he thinks she stopped coming. And the cheese on the melt? it was sourly lacking... so little cheese, it was worthless. and onions? What onions? I admit, I was very sad by my personal meal. Final insult, the fries that I asked for well done, might have been tasty, 30 minutes before we arrived! They were as cold and flaccid a fry as I've had in forever... made me wish for any drive through. Final verdict, I'll go back... the portions are HUGEMONGOUS! and some things seem awesome... so I'll try breakfast, which seems to be the the winning meal here. Went to this location tonight (12/17/22) for dinner (table 15/2) and the meal was not good to say the least. The restaurant was dead for a Saturday night, which seemed funny to me anyway. I ordered the Bob's big bear burger (medium) with coleslaw. The burger arrived not medium, but closer to well. Not burnt well done but a dried out, over cooked, grey looking burger patty. The meat also had a smell I recognized from when I cooked in restaurants. Not spoiled, but that tingey (sort of gamey smell) you get when meat sits uncovered in the cooller for 3 days. Unfortunately, I got a 1/3 of the way through the burger before I realized how bad it really was and then I abandoned the meal. I'm not one to complain and send food back, so I decided to just do this instead. The fresh made coleslaw, not fresh made, but dry and bland tasting like was on it's last legs. I've eaten breakfast there multiple times and it was good, but I'll never eat dinner at Black Bear Diner again. read more

This restaurant is close to me, so I just tend to go there fairly frequently. Almost everytime I go, it seems something odd happens. This time I go, it was their second day reopen. Although there were only 9 entire customers in the entire restaurant.As I entered, they direct me to this dark, sparsely lit section to the left as you come in. I'm concerned with this section as it's totally out of sight of any waiters working there. That's why I never sat there before. So, I agree to being seated there and plop down in this dark corner she leads me to. She gives me silverware, napkins. I notice that nowhere in my entire section is there any salt shakers, catsup etc that used to be on every table. I tell her that I always get the same thing. For some reason, this restaurant offers two completely different club sandwiches !! I tell her I know this, and I simply want the one that's best known..you know the one that's cut into 4 quarters with a toothpick in each quarter right? I also mentioned to her that the last time I ate there before all the restaurants closed, they had served my club sandwich with some fries that had been laying around for awhile. They came out cold and floppy looking. I flagged down the manager and explained...look, this is a hefty $20 sandwich. Serving things with old fries is something that McDonald's does. However, their sandwiches are $7-8. This is a $20 sandwich. You cannot serve nasty old ,cold fries with a sandwich of that calibre and price. In any event, back to my current order..after a rather long 20 minutes, I'm getting concerned sitting my way out of the way in this dark little corner. I finally see a waitress walk into this out of the way room and I say to her...." excuse me but I've been sitting here quite awhile. What can the delay possibly be, because they only had by that time, 7 people in this entire restaurant!! She disappears and says she'll check on it. About 5 minutes more goes by and finally she arrives with my pretty basic club sandwich. I notice it's got a bunch of toothpicks in it ( it looked like an old stagecoach that arrived with about 8-9 indian arrows in it!!) There in front of me was a sandwich that was cut in half on the top part, and then two very weirdly shaped attempts at cutting into 1/4ers on the bottom part of the sandwich, one very small slice of a 1/4er, and then a rather large part of the bottom 1/4er that took 2 hands to eat. HOW FREAKING HARD IS IT TO GET A VERY SIMPLE SANDWICH CUT INTO QUARTERS?? Apparently very hard in this dumb place. Now, I don't want to be a knit picker, but its ALWAYS ,something weird with this place. There's never anybody at the front area in this place..I've had times when I've arrived and felt literally invisible here, until I'll finally catch some poor waitresses eye way back in the room, that'll finally chug her way up, apologizing and asking me how many, as I stand there all by myself. Where exactly is the manager of this place? Its run like he shows up in the am to open up, then high tails it the rest of the entire day! Either that, or he's holed up in an obscure hidden office somewhere. Wherever he is, he's not where he should be welcoming customers as they come in and making eye contact with you. Now, I'm 70 ,gray hair, and I've become used to being invisible in our society. I can walk an entire grocery store and watch hundreds of people look through me as if I was invisible. It happens eveyday! However, when you make a conscious effort to go out to eat, drive there, make a decision to spend more money there than cheaper alternatives, you certainly don't want to walk in there and be invisible until you finally catch the eye of some poor waitress halfway deep into the main restaurant and she has to walk a long way to acknowledge you. So, go there, give it a try if something odd happens to you like what I've explained. It's always going to be something.!! They seriously need a strong manager there, on site and visible. That would clear up about 90% of the problem. Oh, and maybe a few better cooks in the back.Other than maybe a grilled cheese, there's nothing hard or mysterious in making a basic club sandwich. Today was our second visit to this place. We were four at table and we all ordered meals served with fries. When we received our fries they were way too salty (plus the seasoning)! So when we received the last plate, we told the waitress about the fries, and asked for them to be replaced, she didn't comment, just turned and left. Had the Worst experience on Sunday I call in and ask if they take reservations the person said yes we do and I asked for 9:00AM we arrived i went to check in and was told I was not on the list and was told it would be another hour they asked me for my number so they could text me when my table would be ready well after waiting over an hour I decided to check again I was told that they tried to get ahold of me 3 or 4 times I had no text messages from them or no phone calls from them the manager at the time wanted to argue that with me I showed her my call logs and she kept saying I notified you I notified you I am also in the customer service line of business I have never been treated so badd after finally getting inside the waiters told us that The kitchen was a little bit backed up it's a longer than normal wait for food after another almost an hour went by she came and told us that they had so many phone orders and that the phone orders took priority over us that it would be another 20 minutes or so just not good customer service if you ask me I would think that you would want to help the people that are in your place of business before you helped the phone orders and and/or maybe I'm just a little weird that way It will be a long time before I come back if I do decide to come back to your restaurant read more

I cannot speak to the food because I never got the opportunity to actually eat there. But from waiting in the lobby it does: it does not seem very clean inside. If you have a party greater than 2 to 4....good luck. A party of six ahead of us waited forever and our party of five also waited forever. My husband asked what seemed to be the manager where the restroom was and he was anything but friendly... the men's bathroom is reportedly pretty disgusting. They tell everyone a 15 to 20 minute wait but that isn't true if you're a party over four. I rather they just be upfront about longer wait times so we can decide if it is worth the wait. read more

We ate at one of this chain's restaurants in California last year, and while the portions were huge, and the food was okay, it wasn't anything special, in my opinion. I felt the same way after trying this one too. My wife loved her barbecued chicken salad with chipotle dressing, and I had the shrimp and tri-tip steak combo.
