    Chicken Fried Steak (5 oz)
    Camilla V.

This place definitely provides a good meal experience. We ordered chicken fried steak which comes with eggs, hash brown, and your choice of toast, fruit, or one pancake. We ordered ours with one pancake. The chicken fried steak was very delicious. The gravy on top was creamy and seasoned perfectly. The hash brown was good, but it did need more salt. The eggs were tasty. The avocado toast was good, but really simple. I would have liked for it to have had something else on top. The fruit was refreshing. The shredded corned beef brisket hash was dry. I would have preferred it to have been more juicy. The fried chicken was also dry. It did not have that nice crispy tenderness that a good fried chicken should have. The pancakes were very delicious. They are made with sweet cream so the syrup is not really needed. The service was ok, not too friendly. The place provides a comfortable environment for family breakfasts, lunches, and dinners. Overall, this place was good.

My husband got the Gritt plate ( I think) and I got the Classic 2 egg combo.

We were on our way home and decided to stop at a Black Bear Diner for breakfast since it's one of my husband's favorite places to eat when he travels. I had never been to one before because we don't have a location in our town, so I was curious to try it. I ordered the Classic 2-Egg Combo with sausage links and eggs. I also asked our waitress, Sonia, to add gravy to my biscuit, which she kindly did. I also had ask for hashbrown for my side dish. However, when our food arrived, I noticed my plate didn't come with hash browns. When Sonia came by to check in, I mentioned that I didn't get the hash browns I asked for. She then told me that the Classic Egg Combo only comes with one side dish, the biscuit, and that I don't get hash browns with it. I could've swore, on the menu it stated it come with a biscuit and a choice of a side dish, but I maybe wrong. However, what frustrated me, because if there's only one included side, I don't understand why she had asked me me earlier what I wanted as a side. I clearly said hash browns, and if the biscuit is the only included side, that should've been clarified. Had I known, I might have ordered hash browns separately, but by that point, I was annoyed and didn't feel like waiting. I ate my food and we left. It wasn't a terrible experience, the food was decent, and my husband still enjoys this diner a lot. Maybe I'll give it another try in the future and try something else on the menu. Hopefully, the communication will be a little clearer next time.

I cannot speak to the ambiance of the restaurant since this is a review of a door dashed order. The blackened salmon from this restaurant was really tasty and a hearty portion and less expensive than other salmon dishes I have ordered at other restaurants. I really loved the mashed potatoes and seasoned veggies as well. Would definitely order again!

    Homemade Chicken Pot Pie

Bf and I come here when we're craving some delicious diner themed food, our local go to spot! Bf went with the classic, pancakes, but with a twist! He got the red, white, and blue pancakes. It came with 2 pancakes, strawberries, blueberry sauce, and whipped cream. The fruit was fresh, and they gave a generous amount of blueberry sauce. I got the 10oz Santa Maria tri tip and homemade chicken pot pie. I thought the tri tip was a 7/10. I feel like the tri tip could be a little more crispier on the outside, and I felt the serving was a few oz under 10. Overall, it was still worth the prize. It came with two sides! The homemade chicken pot pie crust was very delicious, but I wish the crust extended to the entire pot pie and not just the top of the bowl. The filling of the pot pie was warm and creamy, I would order the pot pie again. Overall o do recommend Black Bear dinner, service is always quick, servers are attentive, and restaurant is clean. Delicious food for a home ambiance feel.

Very filling and delicious breakfast! I had Joe's Hobo Omelette, and wow -- it was so good. Loaded with flavour, cooked perfectly, and absolutely satisfying. The hash browns were even better -- seasoned just right. And I have to mention the biscuits with gravy -- pure comfort food perfection. Generous portions, friendly service, and that classic Black Bear Diner charm make this location an easy 5 stars. If you're in Lodi and craving a hearty breakfast, this is the place to go.

My hubby and I have ate here numerous times. Location is always very clean and service is often attentive. Love reading the newspaper menus and LOTS of food options. Ate the Sierra burger with a house salad last night and it was great! Ranch dressing is homemade with a bacon flavor, delicious!

Two eggs, country potatoes, bacon and wheat toast.
    Ted R.

Been wanting to try this for some time. I had the two eggs over easy with country potatoes, bacon and wheat toast. Could have been a little hotter but not terrible. The bacon had great flavor as did the country potatoes. Wheat good but eggs a little to done for me. My wife had the waffles with strawberries and whipped cream. Strawberries not 100 percent great but it is winter. Service was great. Restaurant very clean. It was good but not so good I would travel far to go to.

BIGFOOT Chicken Fried Steak (1180 cals.)
    Jean W.

Disappointing experience at the Lodi location. Let's start with the positive: restaurant is really clean (bathrooms as well) and servers are top notch. Fast, friendly and professional. Now the not so great: food quality and portions did not meat expectations. Tri tip was burned and fries were cold - Bigfoot was not warm neither and only 5 onion rings? We told our waitress and she profoundly apologized and mentioned that the kitchen would do better next time. Guess we were accustomed to the larger portions served all over Northern California and the Valley is different..

We ended up going to Black Bear diner during the peak hours on Sunday morning. We had to put our names on the list, the wait was about 15 mins, we received a notification via text our table was ready within 10 mins. Our waitress had an extra pep in her step! We ordered our drinks and meals just as quick. The food arrived fresh and hot, very tasty as well! I'm usually not a big pancake girlie but these were good! We will definitely be back to try out more items!

Friday, May 15th, 2026 Approx. 4:30 PM…read more OVERVIEW: This place is awesome! The model trains, the jukebox era music playing in the background, and of course, the delicious food! PROS: 1) Ordered the Sirloin Steak & Eggs, (#9 on the menu) & the Pancake & Eggs selection. (#31) Was delicious. Ordered the eggs over-easy, and the eggs were served exactly over easy. (I.e., all wet & yellow on the inside) Other diners nowadays don't serve over-easy eggs this way, and the egg yolk is fried & dried when served. Today's chef did these eggs right! 2) The pancakes were HUGE! Not just fluffy for show, but actually packed with volume. Was totally surprised. Plus, the syrup is served in those old-school dispensers, (see attached picture) so you can pour as much syrup as you want on your pancakes. I usually drown my pancakes in syrup. However, a lot of diners nowadays pour the syrup in tiny containers when served, (in order to cut costs) so I usually have to bug the servers for more syrup. 3) The venue is quite amazing. Most young kids nowadays have probably never seen the type of classic trains in the display cases at the restaurant. So in that sense, this place is also a train museum. Plus, the restaurant retains that nostalgic vibe of when diners were an integral part of the American family dining experience. 4) A petite Latina Lady took my order at the counter and this Gen Z Bro served the dishes. Both individuals were polite & professional. (Honestly, didn't expect to see such a well-mannered Gen Z Bro as a server. Must be local Lodi hospitality.) NOTE TO MANAGEMENT: Give these kids a raise. 5) At the time of this post, high inflation plagues America. But this restaurant provides good food, at a high volume, at an affordable price. But Management still needs to give the kids in the aforementioned a raise. CONS: The bacon served with the pancakes are a teensy bit burned. But I'm sure that there are a lot of other customers who prefer to have their bacon prepared well-done. SUMMARY: There are so many items on the menu. I NEED TO GO BACK to try some of the other entrees. In the meantime, if you're reading this, and have never been to this place, by all means give it a try!

We made a brunch reservation for 11:30am, though we ended up ordering off the regular menu rather than brunch. That was the first odd note of the afternoon. Before the appetizers, they brought out focaccia with herbed butter, a nice alternative to the standard bread basket. The calamari appetizer with marinara and tartar sauce was fine, nothing memorable. My mom's eggplant parmesan arrived warm but not hot and cooled down quickly. The pizzas, a Funghi and a Margherita, were cooked well in the stone oven and were genuinely the best thing on the table, but they arrived warm and cooled down quickly, the same issue as my mom's eggplant parmesan. With the air conditioning blowing directly overhead, hot food didn't really stand a chance. The service is where things unraveled. When we were first seated, the manager came by and helped with my dad's walker, which was a nice touch. After that it went downhill. When my dad asked for something light, the waiter recommended the carbonara, a dish built on guanciale, grana, egg, and black pepper. That's not light by any definition. It's a basic gap in menu knowledge that does the guest a disservice. The menu also had salmon, ricotta toast, and eggs in purgatory. My dad also asked for red pepper flakes to go with his pizza and they took unusually long to arrive, so he had to flag down a different waiter to get them. The waiter noticed I was drinking my Bloody Mary slowly and offered a different version that actually tasted better. If there's a preferred version, lead with it. When I made eye contact to signal we were ready to pay, he acknowledged it but continued socializing with a coworker before finally coming over and taking my card, as if he was surprised we wanted to pay. When a customer is ready, they're ready. He took my card, asked if we wanted dessert, went to grab the dessert menu, then handed it back. Just hold onto the card. I'm paying with the same card regardless. Handing it back makes no sense. The restaurant itself is beautiful and spacious, with a full bar, outdoor seating, a small store at the entrance, and a vegetable garden out front. It's a great setting. Dinner service might be a different experience, but on this visit the dining room wasn't particularly full, which made it more noticeable that the staff prioritized socializing over the guests in front of them. For the record, the suggested tip on the receipt started at 18%. On the way out, two hostesses stood by and did nothing while my parents, one of whom was on a walker, made their way to the door on their own. Getting the door is common courtesy for the elderly. Pietro's has the ingredients of a great restaurant. The space is beautiful, the stone oven pizza is genuinely good, and the brunch menu has real potential. But a restaurant is only as good as its execution, and right now the service and the food temperatures are letting the kitchen down. They just need to meet it.

Trusting in Yelp reviews, we headed to Lodi's highly rated and popular Avenue Grill. Service was wonderful. Our server (blond lady with glasses) was friendly and chipper and had a very nice demeanor. She was on top of everything. Food came out quickly too. Seemed like the rest of the customers there were local regulars, who knew one another. Cozy, family-friendly vibez. I got the chicken fried steak with crispy potatoes. Good country gravy, seasoned potatoes, and chicken fried steak was delicious. Big portion, enough for leftovers. My husband got the steak & eggs. The steak was a little too dry and under seasoned to my husband's liking. He always orders medium-well, but it was more well. I did agree that it didn't have much flavor. But I had it the next day for leftovers and thought it was good mixed with my gravy and potatoes. So if you're looking for a good traditional breakfast diner, this is probably your spot. I know I've…read moredriven past it many times, but I guess their signage is too modest compared to the huge "IDOL BEER WORKS" on the other end of the building. I figured it was just another iteration of the original (now long gone) Squeeze Inn in Sacramento, and I was right. I don't think the various locations are franchises, but are more likely independently owned, and the quality varies from location to location. The one that used to be in West Sac, for instance, was terrible, which might explain why it's been gone for years. And the mid-town was also a resounding MEH, and also gone. There's nothing at any version of Squeeze Inn/Burger that I want more than just a basic Squeeze (or in this case, SQZ) with Cheese, though. I don't want a taco, nor a BLT, and especially not chicken strips. I want that which made the brand famous. A cheeseburger with all the traditional toppings and a cheese skirt just dripping cheese grease off it. SQZ Burger delivers the goods. The cheese skirt was just the right size, not too big, not too small. At one point in my life I would have said that there's no such thing as a cheese skirt that's too big, but a couple of years ago I had a cheese skirt that was so big that I felt sick afterward from all the cheese grease! In addition to the just right amount of cheese, the burger had lettuce, tomato, pickles, red onion, and a healthy schmear of mayo and mustard. Damn near a perfect burger. The owner was running the register on my visit, and when she brought my food out, she asked if I wanted a side of ranch. I'm the kind of guy who would drink ranch dressing if I could, so of course I accepted. I didn't even ask - It was nice of her to offer! There's a throughline from the original Squeeze Inn on Power Inn Road to SQZ Burger, too. The father of the husband half of the H/W ownership team owned the original location. Brandon and Katie ran the Galt location for several years, and have now brought the goodness to a Lodi brick and mortar spot. I'll definitely be back.

I had the western bacon cheeseburger with fries and a strawberry shake. These burger was full of flavor and BIG! Not sure exactly how they make their fries, but they're amazing. And my strawberry shake was good also. We had about 45 people all land at the same time, and SQZ was able to quickly get us all served in short order. I do love the vibe of both SQZ & IDOL. It was a nice little drive both ways with an epic food stop in between.

Okay, so this review has been a few visits coming. We started coming to California Al's about 2…read moremonths ago, trying to find a breakfast place in Lodi before my kid's practice. The other place I considered my hubs checked out the inside, and walked out and said "No.". So, we needed to find an alternate. We are so glad we did! We love this place. We have made a plan to never order the same thing twice so we can eat everything on the breakfast menu. They make their pancakes so well. They have crispy edges and is sweet. The batter is not heavy or dough so the pancake is really fluffy throughout. We've also had their French toast which was amazing! Light, crunchy, thick. Yummmmm had them with strawberries. We've shared their steak and eggs, the steak was nice and tender, great size and flavor! Our daughter has had their chicken fried steak, and we weren't able to wrangle any of it from her, she kept it to herself. Order the country potatoes. They have crispy bits that we fight over. Biscuit is FLAKY. You can see it even when it's innocently sitting in a plate waiting to be cut open and buttered. And the country gravy has the best flavor...and bacon in it. The staff are wonderful, the restaurant is always buzzing and looks like a local favorite. We totally plan to come back as long as we can. They're going to be on our favorites list!

PROS: - Nice family atmosphere - Large food volume for price - Good service CONS: - Ordered the Pancake Combo, which includes two (2) pancakes. As you can see in the attached picture, one of the pancakes was completely burnt. The chef tried to hide it by putting the burnt pancake under the normal one. I didn't notice it until I had already eaten 1/3rd of the meal, and was too hungry to wait to have another one cooked. This is not the restaurant's fault, but completely the fault of the chef at the time. Needless to say, I won't be coming back.
