Was really looking forward to prime rib at Black Bear Diner in Oakley. They serve really good breakfast, but I've never had dinner there. Worst prime rib ever. I always get end cut and expect it a little more well done. I got there at 4 when they start serving prime rib, it was dry as a bone, and hard to cut. I had clam chowder (best part of the meal), mashed potatoes and gravy, and green beans with bacon. The green beans were way over cooked and the bacon had no flavor. Even the cornbread muffin that came with the meal was tough. The waitress was attentive and service was good-----but the food---$40 for this. The wait on a Sunday for breakfast can be crazy but I was seated right away for 1. The fresh orange juice is delicious and you can see it being made throught out the morning. It's alittle pricey but very good juice. I was craving french toast and this place did not disappoint. I had the cinnamon roll French toast. Warning these are very, very sweet. But if you have a sweet tooth like I do, than this dish hits the spot. Service was welcoming, fast, and friendly. She always checked back with me as well as a number of other servers. SERVICE WAS VERY SLOW! Our waiter never came to check on us. Had to ask another Waitress to help us with our order. More than 45 minutes wait, just to get our food. Just had breakfast here with some family on a Sunday morning and left completely satisfied. Food was good ol home cookin and the service was neighborly and friendly. We had a group of 8 and they easily accommodated us. One of the owners, Brenda greeted us and welcomed us to her restaurant. On a recommendation, I ordered up the Sweet Cream Waffle with 2 eggs and bacon. I love breakfast so and the place smelled great so I was really looking forward to a good start to the day. The waffle was awesome. Not your typical waffle batter, but a slight sweetness to it, kind of like a doughnut or cake of some kind with the buttermilk flavor to it too. It is about 10 inches so not ridiculously large and you have room on your plate for more delicious food. My over-medium fried eggs were cooked perfectly in butter. 2 strips of bacon rounded off my tasty meal. I was pretty full but wanted to try the three little bear hot sauces they have at the tables. Baby Bear (label had no tears) was really tame. Mama Bear (a little warmer) was good with some pepper accents - good on scrambled eggs. I still wasn't scared off though so I went for the Papa Bear (label had tears, sweat and fire in the bear's ears). This was actually my favorite. You don't need much so you feel the heat and still taste the food - again great with scrambled eggs. Not gonna ruin the food or your mouth - :). Everyone else at out table enjoyed their plates as well, most not being able to finish completely due to the generous portions. Our server was nice and kept our drinks full and offered coffee before and after. The owner again checked in with us and asked if everything was good. I appreciate that. The diner is decorated with lots of bears and sporting memorabilia. The menus are like neat old newspapers you open to read. Kids menus and crayons are also available for the little ones. I noticed they support local high school teams, clubs and military from the pics on the wall - always love a local place that is connected to the community! Also I saw a bunch of city workers coming in from the power company and law enforcement to dine. They are located in the same parking lot as the Oakley P.D. and City Hall / Civic Center. Seems like a local favorite. We got there at about 9:30 and got right in, but when we left at 10:30 there was a considerable wait - so come early. Very family friendly and overall a good, comfy time for food. For a diner with a homey feel - this place nailed it. read more

We came here for breakfast a few weeks ago. I was surprised how busy it was for a Wednesday morning. We usually come in the weekends, so it's expected. Luckily we were seated right away. When it was time to order I couldn't make up my mind. I was hesitant to get the ham again because my previous visit it was all burnt! Such a disappointment, but I took a second chance and ordered The Bear with ham. My husband ordered The Grizz and a my son had The Bear too. This time the ham came out great BUT it took FOREVER for our food to come out. Although our waitress, Angelica, was very attentive FIVE STARS for her. No changes in the star rating, just wanted to add more juicy detail as to some of the great stuff this place has to offer. Parking? No sweat. Tons of parking where it's located. If Oakley had a cool downtown this would be as close to it as it gets. If you come on a Saturday or Sunday Monday, prepare to wait. They have some lobby seating and a small swag shop inside. Can't imagine why I would need a bear diner shirt but hey... Someone must be buying this stuff somewhere right? Booths are cozy. Coffee cups are the right size (I'm sorry but coffee should not be served in tea cups for those who need java fixes in the morning). I always order from the fit menu. The flavors are great and the right portions. I thought all their juices were fresh squeezed? I asked for a grapefruit juice. After she brought it back she mentioned something about the can size? Um? Okay, my bad for assuming. Service is decent. I've had better, I've had worse. I haven't had it but I keep getting told the biscuits and gravy are enormous. To a point it's more of a wow factor vs. a nom nom factor. They were impressed by the size but not by taste. Womp womp. Overall- great place for breakfast with the fam. Update on my last review: I emailed the powers who be through the website and got a quick apology response and 2 coupons and a note from the owner in the mail. I really appreciate that is was a handwritten card and the coupons were each for $10 off. Thank you Black Bear Diner for making it right. So since the not great experience, I've eaten there a couple of times and will be back. The food is good and we have not been disappointed. If you want a large meal, get the taco salad, my daughter ordered it and the thing was as big as a football! She loved it! It seems as if they have a lot on the menu for large appetites, I saw some giant food go by. They have normal size too, you can't go wrong with their hamburgers. As far as breakfast goes, I got the mini volcano which was 1 pancake, 1 egg, 1 sausage and 1 bacon. There was nothing mini about it and I couldn't finish it! I'm so glad that they made it right. Been going to the Shasta location for years due to our annual houseboating trips. They opened one up locally and my boys really enjoy it. I mean, who can beat a free kids meal? But really though, the staff is nice. It's a pretty homey place, and of course the food is delish. Save room for their desserts. The banana split is made with huckleberry ice cream instead of strawberry. And their bread pudding is a huge serving. We came up from the peninsula on our way to our boat in the Delta and stopped for breakfast at the Black Bear Restaurant in Oakley. This is our usual go to breakfast spot. Although our orders are usually good and we are happy with our breakfast, today I was extremely disappointed with our food. I got a Shasta scramble with potatoes on the side and the potatoes were undercooked. I just want to say this location is the best! We've gone several times. Once was for my 3 year olds birthday, everyone sang in the restaurant and usually only the staff does which made her really happy. Another time we went for dinner out with the kids and they had tantrums, they put us in the banquette room (may not be the actual name) away from everyone since we asked if it was possible.
