Just another frustrating experience at the BBD. Today's attempt to get my order completed correctly (which seems impossible here) I ordered on line thinking perhaps if they actually read what is printed out from the computer I just might have luck. Nope. So I placed my simple order. The Grizz and the BBQ burger. Each item ordered specifically as required by online ordering. I called from the parking lot to see if the order was ready. Yes ... it's being bagged up as we speak I am told. I ask if she would please check it to be certain it is correct. Oh we ALWAYS do she said. I advised her that perhaps that should be but as I normally get home and my order is wrong would she please check it as I've got my dogs in the car and it's hot I don't want them to be left out long. Of course she said or I can do it myself when I get inside. . I get inside and ask for my order. No one knows where it is. I said it's bagged up somewhere because I just called from the lot and that's what I was told. I will stand in the lobby and watch my dogs (who just wanted to go for a ride in the car) while you find it. Waited. Checked. Waited. Checked. Finally found it just sitting on the counter. Not checked not bagged. Plates plopped in the bag. Not checked. I pride open lid for my burger and no fried onion ring. They claimed because my order said no raw onion they took it to mean no onion ring but could make one. I give up. As it was I got charged extra for changing my raw onion to grilled! No more. $8.99 for Reuben and broccoli cheddar soup of the day or fries, potato or green salad, opted for the soup and it had a pretty good flavor (3.5 of 5). The reuben was served on dark rye bread with a light swirl. Corned beef wasn't deli cut but authentic corned beef shavings approx 1/4" thick. Juicy corned beef with cheese and sauerkraut was very moist, but a bit much on the kraut. It needed to be drained since it was a little soggy, and this is coming from somebody that loves sauerkraut. $9.69 for French dip, meat was approx 1/4" thick and tender and juicy, but not runny. Au jus was pleasantly unsalty and a savory complement to the french dip. HIGHLY RECOMMEND the french dip! Opted for the fries which were medium sized and cooked nice and crisp like they should be. Maybe my taste was off but they seemed to lack a bit of flavor even after sprinkling a bit of salt on them, which I usually try to avoid. Service was superior. The guy who seated us was cool and did a great job. Waitress was friendly and upbeat, while another guy filled the glasses and asked if things were all good. Menu was a newspaper dated back to 1986 when the Titanic was discovered on the front page, at first thought it was interesting then opened the page and, voila! the menu. Flat screen tv playing a NBA game on in the room I was in and ceilings are probably 15'-20' high. Ambiance reminiscent of a mountain lodge type building with gift shop in front entrance, multiple carved bears, major league baseball memorabilia, etc. Plates were white with black bear paws, toothpicks for sandwiches had black bear flags on them, cups had black bear insignias as well. Nice outdoorsy bear theme and a cool, easy going atmosphere. Looking forward to eating breakfast here. Almost missed the location since right next to car dealership just past the corner on main st. A sign on the front of building said monday through friday lunch specials were $6.99 and Prime rib dinner special is $12.99 but didn't notice what time. Will be back to try breakfast and Prime rib. Good experience and cozy atmosphere. **2nd visit friday night ~8:30pm** $10.99 special friday was 8 oz prime rib with mashed potatoes and choice of country gravy or brown onion gravy (went w/country) with steamed broccoli. This prime rib was cooked perfect (see pic) and was nearly tongue chewing tender. Au jus was perfectly nonsalty along with the side of horseradish. Server said there was 2 10oz cuts of prime rib left, guess it sells out quickly and for good reason. They also offer 10oz prime rib for $12, 16oz prime rib for $16. $9.99 Baked rainbow trout had a killer herb spice and was cooked perfect. Side of mashed potatoes (brown gravy on this one) and mixed veges. Asked for a cup to take the reserve au jus home. Hey, ya never know if you need some around for a good homemade french dip. Service again was friendly and prompt and staff all contributes to take care of the customer. read more

I definitely recommend this place, my experience at this restaurant was amazing thanks to a young lady by the name Ava I'm pretty sure. Although she was not our sever she brought our food to our table and was super friendly and kind. She came and refilled our coffees and waters as the restaurant got busy and I hope to have her serve us next time because we will definitely be back! read more

We do regularly go here. It is okay, hence the rating 3.5 Stars. Locals come here to eat. Service is prompt and good. Food here is usually consistent and the portions are "beary" big! Our order: Hot Tea and Coffee Chicken Avocado Sandwich Chicken Taco Salad Total: $25.xx plus tip It is a pretty good value for the amount of food you receive. Kids eat free. There is ample parking. Went here for July 4th brunch... yes, they were busy! But we were seated in just a few minutes and had excellent service & food. Parking is abundant, and this chain is filled with all the cute bear decor, high school and military local pictures, and spacious seating. I had the blt with avocado on sourdough.. woah, I should have invited a couple more people to eat that dish! 2 of my friends had the prime rib & egg specials, and another had the pancakes. There's fresh squeezed OJ available... I should have opted for that over the tea. I'd stop by again if in the area. read more

Chorizo burrito is so not worth it. So basics. Never been to a place that cooks the chorizo separately from the eggs. Very greasy as well. Was missing the cilantro :( what not order again. Staff isn't very friendly. I was the first one to walk in at 7:01 on a Sunday and they all looked over. Said nothing, couldn't even crack a smile. The cutest little home style diner. I took my grandparents here while they were visiting and we had a delightful time. The manager Ray is SUPER involved in the restaurant . He came around to the tables and introduced himself and made sure we were having a good experience. We went for breakfast on the way to boating in the delta on Mothers Day. We arrived about 9:30 and was told there would be a 30 minutes wait. I expect it was extra busy b/c of mother's day. I ordered the burger basket (yeah it was 10am - but I really wanted a burger so sue me). My man got the corned beef "hash" (which wasn't really has but more of a shredded corned beef an then there were hash browns, eggs and a ginormous biscuit on the side. He didn't love it, but if I had ordered it I would have mixed the beef and the hash browns together and voila - HASH. My girlfriend had the lobster benedict which was a mother's day special but not real lobster even though the waitress said it was. There was a mix up on the wait list, when we asked how much longer she looked at the list and another "amy" had snagged my spot. We ordered "poinsettia" cocktails (champagne and cranberry) - we got OJ, we tried again and eventually got the right drinks. My burger was the best thing ordered, cooked nice and rare, the fries crispy the bacon plentiful. My friend was getting married nearby. This was about a five minute drive from the Comfort Suites in Oakley. I got the bacon cheeseburger and requested an over-medium egg to be added and they did. I've been to various Black Bear Diners throughout CA and Oregon. I'm so glad to see that this particular restaurant stays true to what a diner at Black Bear expects. I always have a great experience, from food to service, it's always consistently good. They have huge portions, and it's delicious. I'm not sure how they get fist sized biscuits to be fluffy and buttery, but they do! It may be a chain restaurant but they run it like a local diner. read more

This place reminded me of being in a cozy log cabin. We were seated within 5 to 7 minutes upon arrival. There's a cute gift shop with lots of black bear themed gifts for children and adults. I bought myself a pair of pink bear claw slippers while we waited. We were given the cutest newspaper style menus! They have awesome breakfast items. I was torn between the cinnamon roll French toast, the bacon pancakes, and the eggs Benedict. I knew I didn't want anything too heavy, so I played it safe with the eggs Benedict. They were delish. The hollandaise sauce was full of flavor. Poached eggs were cooked perfectly. The ham slices were tender and juicy. English muffins were nice and fluffy. The hash browns had a rustic vibe to them. They weren't like the shoestring hash browns that you usually get at every breakfast restaurant. I really liked that about these spuds. Each table has every last condiment you might need, which eliminates constant asking for extras. Our waitress was on point with refills. The pancakes are humongous, and biscuits and gravy were like mini mountains on a breakfast plate. There's a display case at the front cash register that has some amazing looking mini pies. I didn't have one, but they look so decadent. I wouldn't be surprised if they were completely amazing because they looked heavenly. I definitely recommend this place, even during their rush hours. My family and I have been ordering food from this Black Bear restaurant for years now. I am not one to normally leave poor reviews but the last 3 times we have ordered food, the food has been down right awful. The last two times in particular, the food has been very undercooked. I legitimately had to throw the bacon the gave us last time on the grill to finish it off. The hash browns we have in front of us at the moment are just warm, raw potatoes. The last 3 meals have cost us over $200 and this order is the last straw. We will not be going back. read more

Wow.... I was really disappointed in the meal I came home with on Sunday. Taking into consideration that we are all under "stay in place" orders during the COVID-19 crisis, and eating out is not an option at this time. So I phoned in my order, was told twenty minutes it would be ready for pick up! Picked up my order and headed back to the house. Only to be extremely disappointed in what I thought was going to be amazing! I had ordered 1/2 order of Biscuits & Gravy with a side of Scrambled Eggs, a Ham & Cheese Omelette, and a Meat Lovers Omelette. The Biscuit was hard and stale and there was only a tiny bit of Gravy... like only enough to cover one side of the Biscuit! WTH? A dry hard biscuit and NO fricking Gravy!! I would of been more than willing to pay more if it meant that I would of had enough Gravy for both sides! Stupid me, didn't think to check the meals before leaving. Add insult to injury, I even tipped the cashier before leaving with my order... Coronavirus or not there is no excuse to not receive the same size meal you would if you were dining in the restaurant! Seating was immediate as we arrived at about 5:30PM, before the 6 o'clock dinner crowd. It wasn't overly loud like most restaurants of this size but I wouldn't say it was quiet either. The food was clearly highly processed and rich. The meatloaf was home made and the big kids dinner menu was a hefty portion. My kids could not finish it was so loaded. The cornbread that came with the meatloaf meal was very sweet, scale-like even. Customer service deserves 5* as Jackie, our main server all other servers were very responsive and attentive. The overall meal cannot be higher than 3 as we were left with a bit of stomach disapproval :-/. The banana cream pie we shared for dessert was very thick and rich with a thick cream base on top (thicker than usual whipped cream base). Before tasting I knew by looks we would be in for some high processed mega sugar load (BIG MISTAKE trying it anyway). Decided to stop by for brunch this late AM and hoped that the kitchen staff was on top of their usual game (they weren't the last time we were there)...and, as usual, everything was top notch...the wait staff, the kitchen staff, the cash register staff. The food was beautifully served with fresh fruit on the side and fresh coffee that was constantly refilled (great service). The California Benedict was fantastic (per hubby) and my California Omelet was excellent! What was most unexpected (and VERY MUCH APPRECIATED) was the Manager/Owner wouldn't let us pay for our meals this morning because we had to leave without being served the last time we were in - apparently several cooks called in sick at the same time and they were just slammed. Unfortunately, I'm diabetic and I just couldn't wait any longer to eat so we had to leave. But, as promised, we'd be back! We thoroughly enjoy the Black Bear and they'll probably get sick of seeing us there in Oakley! We hope not...because we enjoy seeing them! read more

Incredibly impressed with this restaurant. The server was very polite and gave us ample time to order. The food was delicious and cooked perfectly. I am very particular about the way I order my eggs. I don't like runny egg whites. It's unsettling. I ordered my eggs over medium, and they came perfectly cooked. YAY!! The bacon was prepared very well also. I enjoyed this place. My friend hated the coffee. He's all about the coffee and the caffeine offered here was sub par for his taste. No worries. My experience was top notch. One thing though. Have been to many Black Bear Diners, and this is one of my favorites. Staff is always friendly and welcoming. Restaurant is very country rustic, but if you've been to a Black Bear before you know the look. Had breakfast today. Portions are always generous, coffee is perfect dinner coffee-not too strong, not too mild. Just right (keeping with the bear theme ). The orange juice is freshly squeezed and SO good. Well worth the price tag ($4.99 for a large glass), I get it every time. The lack of five stars is due to two things. The location is always pretty busy and I wish it was a little bigger, and the staff can be a bit on the slow side. All in all, a great breakfast location. Will come again! read more

Breakfast sucked! Over the last few times I've eaten here the quality had gotten progressively worse. Today I took a chance on their "pineapple upside down cakes". They were supposed to be their pancake version of the classic. But what I got was a nasty, pancake with a scant few hard little pieces of diced pineapple. When I asked the manager what happened to the advertised "pineapple glazed in brown sugar", he became combative! Really? I just asked where the brown sugar was!
