This was our first experience with Black Bear Diner. We are new to Vallejo, had driven by a few times, and decided it was a good time to give it a try. It was Saturday evening, the parking lot was mostly full, but there was still immediate seating for the two of us. Loved the Tahoe-esque atmosphere! Prices were good, food was delicious, portions were perfect, and service was spot-on! We both had the 10 oz prime rib dinner special for $10.99 (each!), perfectly done to order. Dinner included sauteed vegetables, mashed potatoes, and a large salad. We had no room left for dessert, though they looked scruptious and HUGE! Perfect for a mid-day or late night snack. Great service and location. We were seated right away and the place was quite packed. Immediately a waitress came and asked if we would like any thing to drink and then proceeded to take our order. Tried several times but after yesterday, we are done. Food was cold, husband had to send back hard cooked poached eggs...without the water drained. My chicken friend steak had some strange looking "wanna be" gravy, toast cold and dry, and potatoes cold and not cooked through. When I asked the waitress about whether the gravy always looks like that, she said NO but did not bother to change anything out. She could clearly see we ate only half of what we ordered, she did not comment. I did not tip...the first time in my life! And, not the first time with bad food. The local Black Bear has been a cornerstone franchise for Vallejo for some time (the old school Lyons for the old school V-town residents). I was extremely grateful for the Indoor-Outdoor Dining during Covid, and was seated very quickly for Sunday Brunch (less than 10 min) The hosts and server was polite and attentive. Greeted, seated, delivered drinks, and then dropped off cutlery and condiments in a timely fashion. Outdoor tables were clean, and social distancing adhered. But after 1 hr 9 min, my station was not served, although 3 stations were, that arrived after mine. The meals were simple off the menu, and unfortunately, the two meals were given to other patrons. The server was apologetic but we knew the meal was going to take another 20-30 min. to prepare. Sadly after an apathetic gesture for a bear claw for the snafu, the most disappointing was the Manager, Maria, who didn't even bother to discuss the matter in person. The gesture alone would've eased the tension. In the food & beverage service, that is entirely unacceptable. Needless to say, we left the establishment due to the mismanagement and dining at a more known "Vallejo Cafe" for Lunch. Time of arrival: 11:09 am Time of departure: 12:38 pm. One coffee (one refill). One water. We turned into campers for no reason. No meal because of Black Bear mishap. Very disappointing. read more

Hi , I went here twice and the food was great ! I had the eggs Benedict and prime rib brunch. And a steak the 2nd time. Both times it seemed that the server had to many tables. But the food was great ! I also left very very full. To full both times. And most of all the people where very polite and happy that where there as customers. Price was just to high for me to eat here all the time. But will be back again a few times a year for the eggs and prime rib brunch. read more

i decided to head out to black bear for brunch with my parents. as usual, the place was packed and busy with people but that didn't stop the amazing service we got from them. to save time we sat at the bar and all the servers that passed by would be very attentive in asking us if we needed anything else. my mom was pleasantly happy with the great service we've seen that she talked to Maria, the manager, about our experience. overall, great experience and love the friendly staff! read more

Really disappointed. I had great experience first time. Based on experience i revisited and order pot roast. Too my surprise it was spoiled. I couldn't believe. Over that manager telling me its not spoiled when my wife also tasted and couldn't hold had to spit out. Used to be my favorite casual place to eat in Vallejo. Those days are gone. The service is either outstanding (Tabatha, Theresa) or is just plain terrible. The food even prior to the COVID issues had been going steadily downhill. Routinely cold food, home fried potatoes are never cooked thoroughly, even when you ask that they be cooked more, the cooks seem to have a problem with the difference between rare and raw with meat. The portions as always are huge, but when the food does not taste good, and is not prepared properly the portion size is immaterial. Hopefully a new manager and some new cooks in the near future will take the place back to where it was several years ago. read more

Thought we'd come and get a predictable breakfast. Service was mediocre at best. Place was clean. Food was terrible! Should have known better not to order the corn beef. It was fry, over cooked, over salted. Hash browns was inconsistent.... super crisp on some and soggy on some.... same order. Eggs Soft was cold and hard. Biscuit was huge, which probably would have impressed some but all it was, was a lump of dough. Black Bear use to be good but has seen better days. Thoroughly disappointed. First of all the serves are fantastic! They all take the time to say hello, and continue to keep a good mood even through dinner rush on a friday night! I have dined there several times since the opening and must say over-all I have been very pleased... obviously there are some kinks that need to be worked out, but that is to be expected in any new restaurant opening. I have been to the Black Bear Diner in Vacaville a few times and it has been fine, so we decided to stop in at this Vallejo location one night. Our server was very strange... all of the words she was saying were nice, ("how are you doing tonight?" "can I get you anything else?") but they were said almost through gritted teeth, with a bored, dead face that showed us how she'd really rather be anywhere else but there. It made us feel awkward... I wanted to say, "you know what, never mind, I don't want to inconvenience you by making you take our food order." The food came out and it was G-R-E-A-S-Y! Like, pools of grease. There were bone pieces in my sausages, my pancakes were gummy, the bacon was limp.... We thought, "maybe the evening crew just doesn't know how to make breakfast items?" I could hardly finish anything on my plate, and we left there feeling sick and pretty much disgusted with having eaten what we did. read more

Stopped by to have brunch and had a hard time deciding what to order since I've been trying to eat healthy. The server Leslie was very nice and knowledgeable about the menu and suggested I try the Chicken Apple Sausage Scramble, it was very good and the side of fruit was very fresh and a nice touch. The scramble was just right and the avocado was fresh and the mushrooms were not overcooked or too raw. The server was very attentive to my needs and I was impressed with her not only keeping my coffee cup filled but also by her bringing me a fresh cup because the one I was drinking had gotten cold. My uncle insisted on trying Black Bear Diner, and boy was this a winner. Visiting relatives up north We stopped in the diner and order some lunch which was the Old fashion meatloaf and potatoes. This is the reason I should write my reviews as soon as I can. LOL I have gone to the Black Bear Diner in Milpitas and everything was great... the service, the food, the place! So when my son and I went to the Discovery Kingdom and I drove right by this Black Bear Diner, I thought to myself.... that's where we'll have dinner. This location was so not like their Milpitas location. I am guessing this place has been opened for a lot longer because it looked a lil rundown and gloomy. The waitress that helped us looked like one of those waitresses you see in the movies. Straight up trailer tr.... but trying very hard to be friendly. Our food was far from good. They brought my son's food first and then took about 10 minutes to bring out mine, which meant that my son was done with his meal before I ate mine and then he wanted to roam around the place. I ended up getting it to go and by the time I got home I didn't feel like warming it up so it ended up in the trash the following week. It just sucks to visit a chain restaurant and get great food and service and then go to a different location expecting the same but get the complete opposite. Came here with our family of eight this morning. Luckily we arrived at 8:00am ..... as we left the wait was out the door. We were greeted with pleasant service right as we walked in. The restaurant was very clean and all of the waiters that helped us were very nice. All of the staff was knowledgeable of everything on the menu. I ordered the pancakes, which were sweet and fluffy, along with a side of their spicy sausage patties. The sausage patties are homemade and very tasty! I would go back again. read more

This restaurant needs customer service training. 20 minutes to just be accommodated and another 20 minutes before you are seated. After our waitress got our order it took about 40 minutes for our food to come. The waitress barely even assisted us or even asked if we needed a refill for our drinks, and of course NO NAPKINS! When our food came it wasn't even hot anymore. If you want to be tipped, give great customer service. And if a customer complains, the manager should know how to professionally handle that in such a manner where your eyes aren't rolling. read more

The food is really good. Yesterday I took my family to have breakfast there and even though they were CRAZY busy our experience was great. The portions were huge, but the service was the best we have ever got our waitress LIzeth was so friendly and attentive, that even though we waited for about 30min for our meals she made sure to make us feel especial and not just like another table at the restaurant. We enjoy our meals but the service once again was the best we have ever got and we had visit other black bears from the bay but we would make sure to come back to this location as much as we can. read more

We hadn't been to this Black Bear Diner in a few months. I was disappointed they changed their menu. They took off the menu their Rustic Ravioli, which is what I was carving tonight. Instead I ordered their Pork Chop cutlets with Cinnamon Apple topping. I was very disappointed with my choice. The pork cutlet was not only dry, but it was flavorless! The best part of my meal was the strawberry lemonade & my loaded baked potato. The service, however, was really good even with a waitress in training. read more
