I am a business professional from out of town, but visit the Chestertown Area for the holidays with my girlfriend. Last night, 12/26 - my girlfriend, her friends and I chose to eat at the Black Bear under recommendation of her friend who is currently employed there, and a family friend who is a very regular patron. Knowing the establishment closes at 9, we came in promptly at 8 - and ordered quickly as to not inconvenience anyone. Immediately, we were met with rude and condescending behavior during our pre-meal, and during our meal. We all asked for separate checks - as we'd all cover our own meals, and the waitress acted as if I had just ruined her entire evening. Our orders were taken rudely with "what do you want?", "what do you want for a drink", "no, we're not special, we don't carry that beer" (was searching for a cider), and when asked if you carried Coke or Pepsi products, I was met with a swift "Pepsi - so what do you want?" All of us were pretty stunned and silent to the behavior. One friend even ordered just a beer, as he wasn't hungry and she said "just a beer?" And he said yes, and her remark was "alright whatever" While we waited for our drinks, we could hear the waitress (Ricky?) snickering loudly in the kitchen in regards to my girlfriends friend who works at Black Bear. She was Calling her disgusting, in reference to the slight cold our friend has. Making remarks of "she's out there damn coughing on me and everyone else and I don't want to give her anything". Mind you, there was only 5 people at our table. My friend became visibly upset, and remained upset throughout the meal. When it was time to get our food, our friends was the first meal out. The waitress stood as far away as possible, and practically bent in half trying to reach the table to give me cold-stricken friend her food, and the waitress even made a comment in the lines of "well, you're sick... so...". While the rest of us received our food with the waitress no more than a foot away. Immediately, the entire table was upset, and most of us didn't finish our meals. Some of us wanted dessert and no dessert was offered - even when asked for a menu for it. When it came time to pay and leave, I, being a generous person chose to cover everyone's meal. So I took everyone's ticket to the pay counter. I must have had 60 heads on my shoulders as the waitress looked at me like I was insane. Her first comment was "so why do you do that after I went through all the trouble of splitting checks?" I said "it was a spur of the moment decision - not a big deal". She said "well it wasted my time" I said "eh, an extra 30 seconds of something never hurt" and she said "well, it took a lot longer than that since I now have to add them all up" - meanwhile she's slamming the numbers in on the calculator like a madman, trying to express her anger for my generosity. After my visa gift card being declined she said "how are you going to pay?" and I paid with my Wells Fargo card. $60.37 was the total, and I was ever so gracious to leave a $5 tip after the horrible service and food we had. All my friends stood in awe at the door to the exit, and bar, as this exchange over payment and checks occurred. I will never, and I mean NEVER return to this place - strictly off of one persons behavior. I will be contacting the manager today. read more

We stopped on the way home from lake placid. Just wanted a quick breakfast and instead we got greasy eggs, a breakfast sandwich with scraps of bacon on a un-toasted bagel, one egg and cold cheese. We also almost got stung by a wasp and the place was infested with flies and needs to be cleaned. The staff was very nice. read more

This place was so bad that my girlfriend and I joke about this place from when we visited 3 years ago comparing other bad experiences to.... "well it's not as bad as that black bear restaurant" the ham steak was completely dried out with not a wick of moisture to it and burnt on one side, the fish and chips were dry and flavorless. The fries themselves were pretty good. So bad I almost want to come back just to reminisce. read more

We order the typical - a burger, chicken fingers, chicken sandwich and pizza and food was ok, but did the job. We were all full and food was served quickly. If there is a next time I would like to try their special which was chicken and biscuits. Looked really good around when served in neighboring tables. Dark, depressing hole in the wall. Dingy bar next-door with dirty bathrooms. We only got coffee to go so can't speak for food. Coffee was pretty weak and at 2 pm had been sitting here on the burner awhile. Service was friendly and prompt, so an extra star for service. read more

After 4 days camping in the Adirondacks they're bacon cheeseburger was just what I needed. Staff was very friendly and the price is right.

If one should find themselves heading north on 87 just exit at 26, Pottersville, New York. The Black Bear is a noteworthy place to stop off. Whether you just want to grab a sandwich or a burger, this place is great. I've been coming here for as long as I can remember. The food is just plain, easy stopping along the way food but what stands out is that it is really done well. Burgers are wonderful, you can wash that down with any number of beers they have. Its also a fun bar in evening, shoot some pool and listen to some good toe tappers and enjoy. Its a classic. read more

Pleasantly surprised. It was busy and service was very good. The Italian Wedding soup was very good. All other food was very good as well.

Stopped by for late lunch- ordered the bacon cheeseburger and fries. After a rather long wait with some local yokel starring at me non stop the food FINALLY arrived. The presentation was at best absolutely horrible- grease all over the plate, the fries were mixed of some good and others burned, the burger was totally horrible, GREASY lettuce - how the hell does that happen??!! Semi rotted tomato and the burger itself was burned beyond recognition and placed on a stale bun. Aside from the food being absolutely horrid, the place was pretty filthy - restrooms were filthy and appeared to never have been cleaned, the stench was horrible and to top is off there were no paper towels. I wouldn't recommend this joint to anyone and you can bet your ass I'll never return there. read more

We were travel through and stopped in for lunch. The best aspect was our extremely nice server. Still it was a bit hard to ignore the four customers just sitting there drinking soda and staring at the other customers. One coughed on me as I passed by to use the restroom - Kind of scary place. We ordered trout and the seafood pasta. They are amazingly good. My husband loves fish. He said this is the best trout ever. The black bear seafood pasta is so mouthwateringly big portion. Totally recommended. read more

The brook trout was great, waitress was attentive though not overly friendly, mashed potatoes were pretty standard. Meatloaf and baked potato were also quite good. Pretty standard diner fare overall, though the trout was a pleasant surprise. A lot of locals there, ordering their "usual," seems like a staple of the small community up there. read more

When I arrived to the Black Bear it was like I've been on a pilgrimage to Mecca my entire life and I finally made it. The food was divine and my stomach was quenched of hunger for several days. The egg salad sandwich was so incredible that it felt like I went to sandwich heaven. This place should be shouted from the mountain tops for all to hear. read more

I love this place. We own a camp in Chestertown and always eat here. The breakfast menu is awesome. My favorite is sausage gravy and biscuits . For lunch I always get a burger and my wife likes the wings. If you are in the area you should try this place out. read more

We've stopped by here a few times when visiting the nearby caves. It's classic diner meets rustic charm. The menu is fairly diverse with good portions and fair prices. I've tried something different each time and enjoyed it. So for the food and atmosphere I'm at about 4, 4 and a half stars. The service has been pretty unfortunate though. One server for about 12 tables the last time we were there. She was running around like a chicken with her head cut off. Not outright rude, but her stops at our table were brief and far between. My order came out slightly wrong, and an empty cup for half the meal hurt the experience. My previous experiences were not as bad, but not great. Still, the food is good enough to warrant another chance. read more

It took a long time to be served and then the food wasn't to good. My son's chicken nuggets tasted like fish.

We were traveling home from a trip north with our 3 kids. Our waitress was excellent and kind, coffee great, and dinner delicious: burgers, grilled cheese, and an egg sandwich. It was a nice cozy stop on our way home. Love the cabin atmosphere. Quick service too! read more

Hmmm... the black bear, well... lets see: my friend and I tried to order over the phone (twice). We called to check what was on the menu and they had no idea. We asked one question and barely finished before they hung up. and... this happened again. The lady over the phone gave us our wait time after we struggled to make our order of wings. The food wasn't terrible, but the wings smelled a lot better than they tasted. They lacked in sauce, were very fried and honestly probably only good because it was like 10pm and we just wanted food. i'm not sure but we've heard from other friends that their service was quite the disappointment... at least they're good at one thing: being consistently terrible. read more

Great place to go eat for pub style food. Incredibly reasonably, bar is separated from restaurant, kid friendly. Angel was our waitress and she was very polite, friendly and attentive. We were looking for good comfort food and a few beers and the Black Bear delivered. read more

My husband and I stopped here for lunch earlier today and. having never been here before, I was not at all happily surprised by this experience. The table top was dirty. it looked as if someone had swiped it with a dap paper towel maybe, but it was not even near to clean. The silverware was dirty as well and I decided I would have to order a meal that did not require the use of silverware. Waitress came by and when we ordered the burger special, she never asked us how we wanted our burgers cooked. When the burgers came (mushroom swiss burgers) the meat was as hard as a rock and the mushrooms were nothing more than canned stems and pieces and were not even sautéed. it looked as if they had been dumped on the burger under a slab of swiss cheese of some kind and then heated as the burger was cooked. They tasted so bad, I had to take mine off. I could not eat them. Lots of flies at the windows too. We will not ever return to this restaurant. read more
