My friend and I ordered a few things to try from their stand and loved it all. The meat was not as dry as I would expect at an outpost so we were quite pleased. Their BBQ sauce is delicious! We had their special sandwich of the day - The McDowell ($12) - think McRibs but not as greasy. It was great. We also did the 1/4 lb Prime Beef Brisket ($16) which came with a side & cornbread. I found the cornbread tasting great but a tad dry. Their macaroni and cheese is fire though! Done casserole style it had just the right cheesiness for me and all the right flavors. Loved it. Had the lucky chance to try this today at the LA Wine and Food Festival. Barbecue is one of my favorite foods, and I've had some great food in Texas and Kansas City. The hard part is to have both great sides and great meats (and sauce), and this was absolutely everything. The pork and brisket were both incredibly tender, the sauce delicious, and I think that's the first time a Cole slaw was tastier than mine! 2nd time eating, brisket has great bark, smoke flavor, and fork tender, bbq beans with brisket is good. Pass on the Mac & cheese no flavor and mushy, cornbread is light and airy more like cake but needs more flavor. I'm used to that creamed corn and jalapeño cornbread I guess. Phil makes a bbq brisket that will have you crying tears of joy and wringing your hands asking- WHERE HAVE YOU BEEN ALL MY LIFE ??!!!!! Honestly, once you try his brisket you will find other briskets sub-par (including your own recipe). Phil can give you only the lean cuts if that's your preference but heck, if you're going to break your diet go for the well marbled pieces. Both are amazingly juicy and you don't need a knife. My family goes crazy over his collard greens and BBQ beans (made with Jack Daniels) which are vegetarian. You can find Black Cat at the Beverly Hills Farmers Market and Cedars Sinai Farmers Market. Consistently the best brisket in LA! Always tender with the prefect amount of bark. I wake up early to get at least a pound when he's at the Beverly Hills farmers market as he always sells out. It's worth waiting until Sunday to get our brisket fix as the last few times we got Bludso's it was dry and tough. You can tell he uses high quality prime beef and slow cooks it for 12 hours. If you like bbq or brisket you have to try Black Cat BBQ. My only worry is if I tell everyone how good it is I will have to be up at 8am on Sunday to get our brisket so he doesn't run out!
