Was it when you were charging me $10 for gravy??? To make it look even more shady, they took the extra $10 off for the final charge (the original Price). My daughter and I were searching for a spot to host a welcome dinner for her Summer 2026 wedding, which will take place nearby at the Smog Shoppe. Wanting to find something fun, welcoming, and in deference to the groom's heritage, she came across Fu's Palace. As we drove past, she considered just keeping on going -- the exterior is definitely dated and kitschy. But I encouraged her to stop. I'm glad I did. First surprise: plenty of free parking in the back -- a real bonus in LA. Inside, we were greeted warmly by a friendly, enthusiastic woman (Margarita - or Margaret as the locals know her) who was more than happy to show us around. The private event room can hold up to 90 guests, and there's a bar area and even an outdoor lanai space. Yes, it's a throwback -- red booths, vintage carpet, classic Chinese décor -- but it's got charm. In fact, it oddly complements the Smog Shoppe's retro-industrial vibe. We decided to stay for lunch. We ordered the tangerine chicken and Mongolian beef -- both were very good, and the portions were generous enough that we had leftovers. Lunch came with rice, soup, tea, and what I think was an egg roll -- I enjoyed everything. The service was excellent, and prices were very reasonable. Funny note: not a chopstick in sight -- maybe too many old-timers who prefer forks? It just added to the vintage charm. A few days later, we had lunch in Sawtelle with a longtime LA local (and future in-law). When we mentioned Fu's Palace, her face lit up: "That place is an LA institution!" She recalled work events and many meals there over the years, confirming what we were starting to feel -- this place has heart and history. We're planning to reserve the space for the welcome dinner in July. I'm not quite ready to give it 5 stars -- we'll see how the event goes -- but for now, it's a solid 4 stars. *** I think the most important thing that I need to say before I get into this review is this: anyone who reads the reviews for this restaurant and sees one that says "this is the worst food I've ever had I can't believe that the good reviews are real" has an agenda against this restaurant, clearly. There's no reason to say something like that in the first place, and it's also not true. The food is outstanding. It absolutely defines what New York style Chinese restaurants are supposed to be about. *** I consider myself an expert on east coast American Chinese food. I grew up going to Chinese restaurants when other people were going to McDonald's. As a teenager I worked in our local Chinese restaurant, the Peking chef, a very traditional East Coast Cantonese restaurant. Any time I've moved, the first job was to find out where the good Chinese food was. I am a lifer. I've lived in California since 1994 and have yet to find anything that matches what I ate as a kid. A few years ago I came to yelp looking for good New York style Chinese food in the Los Angeles area. I know there's a lot of great Chinese food here, but it is West Coast style which in my humble opinion, isn't as good. Primarily because of the bias that comes from loving what you grew up with, New York style is my favorite. And, as most of you who live out here now, it's hard to find good Chinese food that falls into that category. Not too long ago, in one of my occasional Facebook posts asking people if they knew of someplace good that fit this description, somebody mentioned Fu's Palace and for some unknown reason, I ignored the response and moved on with my life. There was a place that I was going to in Henderson Nevada that I loved and we were there often enough that I didn't feel like I was missing anything. Then I discovered Genghis Cohen, and found a lot of what I was looking for, but not all of it. And I found Paul's kitchen, which also had some of what I liked, but not all of it. And we also had a place in the SCV (since closed) called new Moon, which had what they referred to as a New York style egg roll, which really wasn't, but they did have good egg foo yong. What I'm getting at in my overly long way is I hadn't really found what I was looking for, until today when I visited Fu's Palace. It was everything I wanted. The New York Chinatown interior feel, the pot of tea brought to the table when you sat down along with the chow mein crispy noodles... Just experiencing those two things when I first walked through the door had me hooked. Then I ordered and was brought back to a place in time that felt like it did 40 years ago. I ended up ordering the wonton soup, which was as it should be, broth scallions and wontons. I ordered the eggrolls, which was as it should be, thick and bubbly deep fried filled with shredded cabbage, celery and carrots with generous Pieces of shrimp and "red" pork. I ordered the egg foo yong, which was as it should be, fluffy lightly fried omelettes filled with sprouts and big chunks of bbq char siu and with a side of that sublime brown sauce. And I ordered the spare ribs which were perfectly baked, with just the right amount of sweet barbecue sauce, not so that it drips off but that it stays on. Sydney had the vegetable steamed dumplings and a gigantic bowl of vegetable noodle soup that she proclaimed to be delicious and worth the trip. I ended up also getting some barbecue pork chow mein to go, so we will see how that is. I can't imagine that it's anything less than delicious. I had seen a previous review of Fu's Palace, and everything about it looked wonderful, from the serving size to the look of the food, so I was interested in making the stop. When we arrived, it was pretty empty, and we were seated immediately with chips, dip, and tea to start. I thought the service was pretty mediocre despite it not being busy, but I hoped the food experience would be better as we chose the tangerine chicken, sweet and sour shrimp, and shrimp fried rice. The food literally came out in like 7 minutes, which raised some eyebrows about how fresh it would be. Trying it all, I will say I was right, as it didn't seem very fresh, as it wasn't the warmest, and the batter seemed old. I wanted to love the tangerine chicken, but there was something about it that wasn't my favorite, as I couldn't really taste the sauce. But I think the best thing was the shrimp fried rice, as it had so many shrimps in there, I couldn't even count them all. We proceeded to dine on sweet-and-sour pork, pork dumplings, lo mein, beef, and honey nut walnut shrimp that was covered in a viscous white sauce, which was quite unusual. We very much enjoyed the lo mein beef as it was salty and tasty. The pork dumplings came out with a different normal different color than normal. Staff have been there for 31 years! The staff are SUPER kind to all customers. I listened in on how they treated each customer and every customer was kind back to them and you can tell there are long time regulars. They even gave me an extra rice bowl to go since the staff saw I ate all my rice lol. They have ample free parking in the back (rare on this side of town!) with a security guard. It wasn't that busy on a weekday during rush hour so food arrived fast. They serve a smooth warm tea and something to snack on while you wait for food. Ambiance is quiet, low key, warm lighting, kinda reminds me of the Godfather or The Sopranos lol. I should have honestly checked the food before I left, that's my mistake, but I would have never thought this is what they considered chicken chow mein. One, it was swimming in oil and two the noddles came separately....? and were indeed crispy. Typical old-school Chinese food tailored to "guai loh" palates. The food is fresh and generous but pretty under-seasoned, and the fried rice that comes with the combination dinners is downright mediocre. If some more garlic, ginger, and even sesame oil found their way into the seasonings (and they really retooled that rice) this place would be really special; it's still OK. For example, the steamed fish was cooked on point but the black bean sauce was completely "meh", a shame (I asked for some green onions to punch it up a bit, and that helped a little.) The nicest things here are the vibe, which is chill and very retro, and the service and staff, who are really nice, friendly, and attentive. They have a full bar and wine pours are generous and reasonable, too. But Fu's has weathered the storm and is still standing. It may have seen better days inside but it's still comfortable, and they serve good Chinese food.
