I was visiting friends in Three Oaks, and they recommended this place because I am vegetarian and avoid dairy. We stopped in twice in two days - once to get cookies and once for sandwiches. Both were fantastic. At our first visit, I had the vegan oatmeal cookie, which was moist and very flavorful. My friend, who does eat dairy, had what she said was a great peanut butter cookie. When we went for lunch, there were five of us. The kids had bagels and cream cheese that were perfect for them - one even tried the Bacun Scallion cream cheese (vegetarian "bacon") and loved it. Two adults (one who is not even a vegetarian) had the seitan Reuben and I had the "TAT" (tomato, arugula and tempeh). All of us loved the sandwiches, which were very fresh tasting and just the right size for lunch. The chef was there and quite friendly. It took me way too long to stop in for a look-see and a treat. I'm happy I did. Monday morning about an hour after opening at some boutique bakeries nets little or no goodies left in the case. However there were plenty of tempting treats. Black current glazed donuts were delicious! Crumb coffee cake with a cinnamon ribbon in middle was perfect, nice moist crumb and not cloyingly sweet. We loved getting goodies here while on vacation. The space is clean and airy and a great spot to enjoy a pastry or one of the sandwich lunch options. The cinnamon roll was as big as your face, and delicious - extra soft with just a little bit of "gooey" in the middle, plenty of cinnamon, just the right amount of frosting. I don't usually expect much from donuts at bakeries, because typically they are baked instead of fried, or the texture is off. Not so with Black Currant donuts. They had the perfect slightly crisp outside with a chewy/soft middle with glaze that melts in your mouth. My favorite was the fresh strawberry glaze donut. The cookies were good but a little bit crisper than my ideal cookie texture. Finding Uncommon Coffee Roasters (based out of Saugatuck) here was wonderful. Drip coffee, latte, and cold brew were all perfect. Black Currant knocks it out of the baked good/coffee shop park. read more

One of the best new things in the area to open! As a vegetarian, I welcome the menu, and am excited that vegan friends have a new haven in our corner of Michigan, which can be pretty lacking for them. My partner and I stopped in Black Currant Bakehouse on our way back to Chicago over Memorial Day weekend. Black Currant offers a really amazing selection of fresh baked pastries, cookies, and muffins. Not to mention cinnamon rolls, doughnuts, and bagels, along with classically hand made espresso drinks. No automated machines! We tried their chocolate brownie, blueberry muffin, and namesake black currant scone. Every confection was flavorful, moist, and clearly made with care. Coffee prices are similar to Chicago, and we didn't get drinks, so no opinion there, but we will definitely return to try the quiche and other pastry items. They have been open and honest about what they can offer on their Instagram and have given great directions for how to access the bakery even with the construction happening out front. We like to order their vegan options, which are super yummy. My five year old especially likes their vegan banana bread. This is one of the best--if not THE BEST--bakery in Harbor Country. I have my favorites items here, of course, and am always disappointed whenever they run out. Try anything with the raspberry jam (the filled raspberry donuts are so yummy)! I also like the chocolate-dipped macaroons and the banana bread--so moist and good! The other day I bought a coconut-covered donut that was delish too. Jesse and the rest of the wait staff are friendly and welcoming and the environment invites one to share good company over coffee and something sweet from the front counter. Maybe because business isn't what they thought it would be but I don't think a lot of people know it exists. Not much signage - decent coffee drinks but never had anything I didn't love. Some dishes that have been missing for a while that were excellent are a crueler and a Nutella filled sugar donut. SO good! We're visiting for the weekend, and found the bakery on the web. Masks strictly required and gloves worn by the staff. Everything we tried was delicious! The quality is consistently terrific and the staff are all wonderful. I recently had a pumpkin spice latte and I'm telling you it was the best I've ever had! A vegan oasis! Saw the east-west reuben sandwich posted on their Instagram and had to make my way in to try it. I knew that they had vegan options, but was pleasantly surprised when I arrived to see that they had over 7 vegan treats in the case, and that was after they had run out of many things. My crew agreed that the sandwiches we had were some of the best we've had in recent memory.
