My partner and I stopped in here during our vacation, and LOVED it! The quality of the coffee as well as the pastries. And of course - gluten free options which were delicious AND seasonal (gluten free pumpkin chocolate chip during the fall)!!! The line was incredibly long to get in - but worth it. And speaks to how good this place is - maybe they should expand, lol! The ambiance inside and service was also great. If we are ever back in the area for vacation again, will 100% be coming in each day.

So good I went twice on my 2.5 day trip to New Buffalo. I got a donut, quiche, and cold brew the first day and just a donut the second day. Everything was delicious. Go early to get a better selection, as pickings were slim the first day (a Thursday) when I got there around 11:30am. Also expect to wait in a line - Friday morning around 9am I waited for 25ish minutes. Staff is friendly and efficient. There are a few tables inside but I ate my stuff outside. Will be returning the next time I'm in the area!

Our cake was stunning! The cake and cupcakes were delivered flawlessly. Thank you for making our special day truly unforgettable!

I stayed in New Buffalo for the weekend and ventured out to find breakfast in town each morning. I am so happy I found Black Currant Bakehouse! Their bakery offerings were delicious and I visited all three mornings that I was in the area. Their menu was large and had variety, so I believed I tried something new each morning. I loved their fall menu and their donuts! The flavors were very unique and delicious! I live in Chicago and brought an Apple Butter Danish back for a friend that was visiting. The service was great and I told the owner how much I enjoyed his bakery. It was also decorated for Halloween when I was visiting, so I loved how festive it was. Next time I am in the area, I hope to return!

I love the donuts here so much, better than any other place in the area. The texture is so amazing, soft and pillowy. Like the chewy texture of mochi donuts, if you are into that. The little brownies are fudgy, very good. I liked the wedding cake latte. As someone who loves sugar, the apricot filling in the jelly donut was veryyy sweet. The cherry almond muffin was a bit bland. Blueberry thumbprint was just ok. Service is friendly.

My daughter and I came here because we wanted to go to the deli next-door. When we saw the line out the door for the bakery, we decided to check it out. I'm so glad we did! Oh my goodness! This place has the most delectable cakes, and their drinks are so whimsical and perfectly balanced. We both decided that this was a place that we had to come back to!

The quality of the pastries and coffee are top notch. We wandered in, on our way to another business. The room was bright and refreshing. Big windows allowed a ton of natural sunlight in, warming the room perfectly. The choices of pastries were endless. Unique flavor combinations and classics were all very tasty. The young lady behind the counter assisting us was very sweet. She had a big smile and a positive attitude. I'm sure she is used to people oooh-ing and ahh-ing all over the pretty pastry case. The coffee creations took a while. I guess it takes time to prepare perfection. Our beverages were rich and smooth. Delicious! Overall, everything was wonderful, and I will definitely return on my next visit to New Buffalo.

The best Jerry, the best! Cinnamon roll perfection. Libras like all things in balance, and Black Currant nails the proportions of dough, cinnamon sugar and icing. And to the genius that decided we needed a larger sized cinnamon roll-take a bow. Never knew I needed it, but I'll start with two of those. Throw in an apple fritter and a few donuts and we're on our way for a delightful walk through Union Pier to our rental with treats for the mornings. This outstanding Bakehouse is part of every visit here.

Ask the Community - Black Currant Bakehouse

    Is this place study/work friendly?

No. There is a small seating area; however, the coffee shop is very crowded and there are typically lots of excited little kids in line with their parents choosing donuts.

    Do you make wedding cakes?

Yes we do, information can be found on our webpage.

Are any of the donuts vegan?

No, the donuts are not vegan. We do have many other options that are vegan however.

It has a small town community center vibe, and there are seating options available to enjoy your donuts once you purchase them. I love this rec-center vibe. The donuts themselves are pretty much what you would expect in terms of basic variety. There wasn't a huge variety available, but there were plenty of flavor options to choose from for even the pickiest of donut eaters. Strangely one immediate complaint that I have about the donuts right off the bat is that there's actually way too much icing or glaze. I got an old fashioned and two krulers, and some others, but there's so much icing on them that the donuts are completely lost and I'm literally crunching on pure chunks of recrystalized sugar on the old fashioned. I never imagined I'd have that complaint, but it is a bit overwhelming. I'll try the others later. I could not finish the old fashioned donut though because it was too sugary. (Took me 3 times to eat that one donut) There was a very tall gentleman in there that assisted me with my order. He was very pleasant and patient with me while I figured out what to put in my collection. Afterward, I sat down and ate part of my old fashioned donut to which he inquired about the quality. I told him it was good, but I should not have. I thought maybe I was just having a sugar issue with the old fashioned. I didn't realize it till I got the entire box home that they are all very heavily coated with the glaze. I thought the box was exceptionally heavy for 6 donuts... In any case, it doesn't really matter. Other than the Bit of Swiss business up the road, this is the only donut shop in town and I'm guessing the one you'll be stopping at when you roll through here as well. I love supporting local businesses and I'm glad this isn't a krispy kream, but I will say there's a little bit more that could be done in terms of enhancing the ambiance of their shop, as well as managing the overall glaze that coats the donuts. But the people were friendly and they were open early, so it was all good. *NEXT DAY I'm staying in an air bnb and Im actually going to take my donuts back. I took one bite of the kruler (yesterday when I got back to the b&b) and it was not good. All sugar on the outside, burnt exterior, but the inside was either raw or I don't know what. It was like wet bread. Literally. Pasty, gloopy, and so greasy/oily. Definitely an issue with the oil, and perhaps the recipe as well. Either way, I don't want to eat the rest and will take them back on my way out of town today. And by the way, it was like $20+ for a cup of coffee and 1 old fashioned, 2 krulers, 1 custard long-john, 1apple fritter, and a peanut butter filled. The long-john was okay, not enough custard and the pastry was dry, over-fried. The apple fritter was also a little burnt outside, but the apple ratio was good. It still was coated too heavily with sugar. I had to peel some of the thicker chunks off first. One bite of kruler and I won't eat that. Nope. I hope they have a better batch today. So, final thoughts... I just dropped off the bad donuts and the owner only refunded the 2 krulers even though I didn't eat the peanut butter one either, and that was after she got really defensive about her krulers (as if I'd never had one) and she refused to receive even the tiniest bit of feedback. Its obvious they were burned, over glazed, and raw in the center but she chose to make me feel badly about bringing them back, then she refunded me from her employee tip jar! What? She was so uncomfortable and unwilling to even listen to me that I felt angry leaving, even though I tried to be gentle. Whatever. My review was going to increase from 3 to 4 if they handled this well, but she didn't. Now it goes down farther than normal because customer service is important but was really lacking here by the actual owner, not the pleasant employee, though. She really put him in a strange position.

I really enjoyed my lox bagel and thought it was one of the best I've had!! The flavors were nicely balanced with the onion, capers, cream cheese and lox. Big overstuffed bagels that fall apart while you eat them - lox sliding all over the place - are really annoying. These were satisfying without making you feel gross after. The coffee selection exceeded our expectations. We shared a chemex for 2. They had a few single origin coffees to choose from and we had their pink bourbon Columbian. Anyway, this is take out only. The space is bright and open, but no seating is available. I ordered a raised yeast, caramel, and blueberry. The woman working was kind enough to let me sample a yeast and an old fashioned donut hole. At D&D it was mostly about the raised yeast for me. I have to give it up to this 2020 Donut Fest winner's slightly different but amazing donuts! You can tell a lot of thought and love was put into the dough formula. It was so soft, pillowy, and moist with a nice texture. A strong foundation is going to be a must if mostly the only other donut variation is going to be the glaze and the glaze was just as strong. The consistency was perfect for the dough. The glaze flavors were delightfully forward, tasty, and approximately distinctive. The caramel was rich while the blueberry was sweet and fruity. The glaze held up over time and was not a runny mess hours later. The donuts were pricey but worth it. I've paid the same or more for so great donuts. I have to come back for that apple!
