Certainly not your average restaurant/bar. The food is locally sourced as much as possible and the menu changes seasonally. Most items on the menu are unique in their preparation/presentation. Never had anything that I didn't like. From wild game chilli sliders to wild salmon with sushi rice, the quality is above average. Welsh-inspired swmp perogies are super. The menu is limited, but everything is freshly prepared. The bar always has a variety of interesting and unusual craft beers on tap, along with numerous pages of bottles/cans available.Very knowledgeable and helpful people behind the bar. If you're interested in craft beer, this establishment should be on your must-visit list. Wow, one of the worst and most awkward dining experiences ever. Decided to stop by on a road trip through e town and thought we would give it a try. Should've yelped before we ate. Food was over priced and was gross, the staff was really friendly, however, they staged our visit and should have heeded the advice. He said they had a large party of 21 and hoped we weren't in a hurry. We opted for salads thinking it would be safe. It was horrible. My wife and I ate at this restaurant several months ago and really enjoyed it. They had some pretty house made infusions behind the bar and the food was fresh and cooked very well. The waitress and other staff were very helpful. Also, the band that was playing was appropriate for the setting and not overly loud so we could actually still converse. I am surprised at a review from someone who gives this 1 star because he couldn't find enough vegetarian dishes (Kurt). Seems rather unfair to give 1 star to a place because they don't have menu items to cater to YOUR dining preference. My hubby and I have been here a couple of times, one of those times was with a friend. So far everything we have had has good. The first time we went there with a friend, I got their chilled watermelon soup....oh my, it was awesome! I would say they're food is average for what you get. I took my wife here for our anniversary. What a mistake! We have so many good restaurants in Lancaster but because of a cover write up on Bar Fly, we decided to take a drive and try something different. The menu LOOKS good, but eh. We went on a Sunday night and clue #1, there was nobody in the place. The beer selection is good; a lot of craft beers, but many of them of very high alcohol content. I ended up drinking Guiness after a few tastes of the featured beers on tap. Clue #2, the bartender could not take our order and came back to us three times til he got it right. My wife ordered a $8.50 glass of wine and got 2 1/2 finger pour. We had to ask for bread while we waited for our food. It was white bread with no taste and stale. Our ceasar salad also was flavorless. For our entree, we had a pork burrito served with a Wilbur chocolate mole sauce. What's the chef thinking? You don't make mole with sweet chocolate. If my memory serves me correctly, the price was $20. Not worth it - we won't be back. read more

interesting place - the four of us were seated in the back room - the non music band room - and the setting was bland - like it was an old bingo room for senior citizens - but the food was great, unique. I experienced tastes i had never tasted before - lots of great beers to choose from too - delicious appetizers - and some of the dips and sauces were unusual and clever - I like that some real thought went into planning their menu. Our waitress, who i think is one of the owners, was superb. I felt like we were being served by a young katie couric - and her voice - mesmerizing. I could listen to it all day - low, smooth, yet full of life. She should be reading audio books or singing. The voice affected everything - because her voice told me my chorizo was delicious, i was just drawn in and it had to be delicious. The only disappointment was the coffee - i find this problem in many good restaurants - they serve bad or weak coffee. Really, it's often the last thing you have at a restaurant - you want to finish on high note - not a downer. But then she thanked us for coming with that darn voice - it did end on high note. I love it here. There is a very conversational atmosphere that includes patrons and staff. The menu changes every 3-4 months. This includes the cocktail menu, which may change more frequently. If you were here and not impressed with the menu, try again sometime. I also urge you to try something new. My wife and I have been there several times and it has always been a good experience. Dave the bartender seems really knowledgeable about the beers and drinks they offer and can describe things very well. Large selection of bottled beer and several nice choices on tap. An unexpected change in dinner plans had us arriving at the Black Gryphon and the whole party agreed what a great bit of fate for us. The food was excellent. The service was fantastic. Not only could you taste that everything was homemade, you could tell it was prepared with passion. Last night, my wife and I ate at the Black Gryphon for the third time. Each of our times there, we have had a very good experience. It's been pretty quiet each time we've gone, as we intentionally go on off-nights. The servers are always attentive and friendly; they take the time to answer questions and make sure your experience is great. The food has been very good each time we have gone. This place is gross. The exterior of the building is covered in mold and mildue - so you can imagine what the kitchen must look like. The interior of the place is dark, dingy, has a "dirty-mop" smell, with food all over the floor (welcome critters). Well, the starting of our evening was a higher star...but we ended with really what is below even a one. My husband and I did not have a reservation..they said they would be full with in the hour..we were sat at 6 pm and just left and let me tell you they were not full. Anyway on with my review...we were sat in the corner by the door...no boggy because the door looked unused...well I was wrong as I will point out later. We order our meal...apps came out in a timely fashion...but our main entree took over am hour. ..it comes to the table and it is wrong. Hubby said to me..if it is not ready we will just pay for apps and coffee and go..I said ok the. A few minutes later here comes our entree..the filet with crab cakes and shrimp....well the filet was ok...and the shrimp we're the itty-bitty ones ypu avoid in the stores. Was not pleased at all... we ate it...as we are waiting on our check they decide to use the back door where we were sitting.....ok but on an 18 degree night the one guy just stands with the door open talking to the other guy....I was getting peeved for sure...we get our check and it is not ours...we waited 20 minutes as our waitress does not even notice us as she is putting glasses away..from the floor mind you she sat the clean glasses in the blue dish rack directly on the floor...I could not believe it. Ugh...it could have been nice but it just was not. We are now on our 1.5 hour drive home. read more

NOT IMPRESSED! This place needs to step its game up, seriously! We made reservations because we had never been before. We drove about 45 min to get there. Not one person even looked at us as we patiently waited. No one asked if we were already being helped. About 6 workers walked right past us in a 10-15 min time, all the while we were eagerly trying to get someone's attention. I grew livid from the get go. Bartender was rude and wanted nothing to do with us, as if it were not her responsibility to help us find some help. I tried to look past it, because I was hungry and thirsty for some imports, did not want to make a scene. Finally got a seat and waited, again...ordered drinks, and they came one at a time. Great variety of beer, but no one knew what was even available to order!!!! Menu was all around stupid. Food was ok, my woman hated hers. The others in the group were just trying to make the best of the worst, since it was their idea to go there. No management, no training, not a care in the world. I made a gentle complain at the end and all I got was a half ass excuse...whatever. I'm never wasting my money at this place again. One of the area's best and unique restaurants. The chef uses locally sourced and seasonal ingredients and tries new things. I have sampled many different menu items in several visits and have enjoyed every thing I've ever ordered. The wings with a chocolate based sauce are the best around. There is something for everyone including several out of the ordinary vegetarian offerings that my V friends are glad to see instead of the usual salad or grilled Portobello. The staff is always knowledgeable and have never steered me in the wrong direction. The bar is incredible. Nowhere in Central PA has as many selections as here. From microbrews to infused liquors to inventive cocktails and an extensive list of wines and beers. Also, I've attended a couple of their "special events" where they provide food and entertainment for a very reasonable price giving the profits to a local charity!
