My husband saw a Facebook ad for "All You Can Eat" ribs at the Black Rock Bar and Grill's Tampa location. So, we did the logical thing and planned a weekend trip around ribs (just kidding...but not). Black Rock Bar and Grill is a free standing establishment within a plaza of other establishments. The ribs deal was for only one month and not at all of the Black Rock locations (hence the trip from Volusia County to Tampa). We went in the middle of the day on a Sunday and they weren't busy at all. Our server was respectful and attentive, though he was unaware of the "All You Can Eat" ribs promotion. But, it apparently wasn't well-known within the restaurant as the hostess was unaware as well. The manager did confirm the deal, so all was well for my husband's rib pilgrimage. We started off our meal with the jerk chicken wings. They were pretty standard. For my entree - as I do not care for ribs - I ordered a cup of chicken tortilla soup and the blue cheese chopped salad with an add on of chicken. My meal satisfied my craving for something fresh and I really liked the way the balsamic glaze worked with the blue cheese dressing. My husband of course ordered ribs and they indeed "All You Can Eat." They were different sizes and his second plate contained more than his first (none of this mattered, it was just our observation). Nonetheless, my husband said that they were pretty good and loved the barbecue sauce they were glazed in. We would definitely go back again as we want to try the main feature of this restaurant: cooking on 755 degree volcanic stone. read more

I never forgot the Yelp event at Black Rock, years ago, and finally made it back with high expectations. Sadly, night and day experiences. We were seated in a small, smoky room and moved ourselves out to the bar. We wanted to watch the Lightning game on their TVs and breathe. About an hour and a Cesar salad later our dinners rolled out. We both ordered DIY cooking on the volcanic rocks. All of our food was burning during the demonstration. Server said that wouldn't have happened with butter, but since we're gluten-free she didn't use it. There is no gluten in butter. We asked for new meals with butter so nothing would stick or burn. Took a while then arrived with a different server, cooking everything during the demonstration. I asked her to move it all aside and demonstrate with one piece, one protein at a time. My scallop (without butter) was already sticking. The cook times listed on the menu meant nothing at that point. Had to use our culinary instincts to perfect it all. Steak and seafood were absolutely delish. As for our sides, both loaded baked potatoes were made incorrectly and never replaced. Bartender adjusted the bill and served up clutch drinks to make the night better. If not for the bartender this review would be 2 stars. read more

The Food was fairly priced and overall we were happy with the dinner date. What a cool concept! Although some prefer to have them cook your entree, the real experience comes from being able to do it yourself. The black rock is heated to 750 degrees I think and is presented in a tray which contains their signature sauce & compound butter and rice on to keep your meat/seafood as you prepare. It's recommended to cut the steak into bite size pieces or strips & cook them only a few seconds per size, which means each bite is hot & juicy. We also ordered a few extra sauces to try them. The horseradish cream sauce was perfect for the steak & the Louisiana sauce was spice & great for seafood. Also would like to mention that it was a great value! Sirloin steak, 6 nice-sized shrimp, a large baked potato, and a dinner salad for $20? Awesome! The service and food was very good & the atmosphere was nice as well. Our only complaint is that the tables were not large enough to be able to shove the rock away from you. It was so close, that all of us were splattered from the butter used to cook the food. They really should offer bibs or at least warn you that because of that high heat, there is a good chance that you will be splashed or splattered with your entree! I do a lot of cooking so I know there is that possibility, but because of how small the tables were, and how close you had to cook, it was really unavoidable and you couldn't move farther away from it. We will go back again because we really did enjoy our meals, but next time dress in something old that can't be ruined. My husband's Tommy Bahama shirt is now cut up for rags. read more

We had the best service for our anniversary dinner! This place has a killer happy hour nightly and service is always top notch. My fave is the salmon, they offer three choices of marinade - I go back and forth between sweet chili and bourbon glaze because both are delish. The penne Alfredo is a huge serving for a side dish. The bartender's cocktail skills are on point, strong - just how I like it! I could have eaten the entire plate of Brussels sprouts because I have no self control so I had them boxed up early! We came here with friends on New Year's Eve. I was expecting a steakhouse but wasn't expecting it was the type of place where you cook your own steaks. While I do cook a good steak, I don't usually go to a restaurant where I need to cook my main course. In the end, due to conversation, no experience using a lava rock, and just the standard goings on in a restaurant, I completely overcooked my steak. The appetizers were very good. We ordered the spinach / artichoke dip, fried pickles, pretzels, and Lobster dip. The portions were huge and they tasted really good. I ordered an Old Fashioned and it was ordinary. The service was friendly and experienced but clearly very busy. I would go back again but would be better prepared to cook my own steak. While this place is certainly not a 5 star steakhouse, their pricing was very fair. Nothing is worse than a 3 star dining experience at 5 star prices. One thing to note is that you will leave there feeling like you need to take a shower. The smoke coming up from everyone's lava rocks can get quite thick. The aroma is incredible but thick. Came here for a night Didn't have a reservation and was seated after about 10 minutes. It was a Sunday after 6pm and they were pretty busy. Like I've said before, as soon as you walk in it's freezing cold and smoky! They must keep the temp down due to the cooking of your own food on the rocks. Staff was friendly and sat us at a booth. The booth light was out which made it really dark and hard to see at times. I ordered the crab cake dinner which comes with 1 side which I opted for the house salad with ranch dressing. Daughter and hubs got the sirloin and my dad got the ribs. Salad was out in no time and food to follow. Our server explained the cooking times for the steaks and we were good to go. She came back to check on us and we needed more sauces and refills. Took her a bit of time which was nothing against her service as she was also serving a large table near us. My crab cakes were delicious! FYI - if you don't want to cook your own steak you can let the server know and they'll cook in the back for you. This place is pretty interesting...the appetizers are huge and really good (btw if you sign up for emails you get a free pretzel app as shown in the pic) As far as the meal... we knew we would have to cook our own food... but completely unaware they give you a completely raw steak to cook. Their recommended cooking chart is completely inaccurate for a raw steak... not sure if they're supposed to cook it a little first but this looked like they grabbed it straight out the fridge, threw it on the stone, and brought it to the table immediately. They also messed up my sausage order but no big deal, the sausage was still good. Our friends we were with however complained immediately about the lukewarm steaks and shrimp. The server left to tell someone and the chef came to our table and our friends again said all the steaks were almost cold. The chef advised he was going to make new steaks for everyone at our table. After awhile, we all received pipping hot streaks but this time none were medium cooked, all very well done. No point in complaining again!! The baked potatoes were good and very large. We love the steak cooked on the hot black rock. I like my steak rare and can cook it strip by strip the way I like it. My husband likes it more medium, and cooks his on the steaming hot rock like that. Most of all I was so impressed with Kineshia (not sure of spelling) our server. She was amazing, fast, efficient, professional and friendly. She never wrote down any orders. This place was pretty cool! I'm from Vegas and we don't have a lava rock restaurant, so it was a cool experience! I got the filet and lobster tail. The service was quick and our waitress was great. The waitress shows you how to cook your steak to your liking, then the rest is on you. The sides were yummy- I had asparagus and clam chowder. Lobster tail was fresh. The butter you cook your meal with is super yummy and the cream au jus they give you to dip is also delicious. Only reason I'm marking down one star is because they need a little better ventilation, it was a little smoky in there. Otherwise, great spot! I'll be back. read more

My sister-in-law brought us to this restaurant for the unique stone cooking concept. While I appreciated the novelty, personally, it wasn't my preferred dining experience. Having to cut and cook each piece of food on a scorching lava rock seemed a bit too hands-on for my liking. It is definitely an experience that you need to try at least once. If cooking on the rock is not your style they have many other selections on their menu as well that will not disappoint. The lobster bisque although it seems pricey, you will understand the price when you get it. It is amazing. You also must save room for dessert. The sizzling black rock volcano is amazing and please take this as a warning have friends to share it with. I wish they would focus more on cleaning because there was slimy dust on the lights and rafters. As for food, it was alright but not necessarily memorable. I'm averaging my last two visits here and giving it a 4. My first experience was last June when there were more COVID enforcements in place (e.g. limited seating and menu). We had a 5 star experience and our waiter was very attentive and the food was fantastic. I really wanted to take my dad here for his birthday as he loved steaks...Fast forward to last weekend...Mother's Day. It was a 3 star experience. By the time we got in for dinner, the busyness died down, but our server was still very inattentive. Food was great, but we had to ask for water 3 times in 30 minutes and she forgot every time. We ended up asking another waitress. We weren't a needy group, just water. Both visits we got the dueling pretzel. Perfect both times. We love the cream cheese dip the most. These came out on the hot stone where the shrimp were cooking in a cast iron mini pan. The steak was to be cooked at the table on the hot stone using the special butter. This is perfect as the first and last bite is nice and hot. You get to cook the meat to whatever temp you like so no complaints. All in all I loved the place. Our server was great and very helpful. The food was just OK. The restaurant is pretty hot and smoky, which is a struggle in Florida. We got a variety of dishes from drinks to apps to multiple entrées. We all agreed that the food was OK, but we probably would come back. It seems like this is a place people go for celebrations.
