Since 2008 Black Rock coffee bars have been growing to 150 locations in seven states. California, Texas, Colorado, Idaho, Oregon, Washington and of course Arizona. The newest location is having their grand opening today. What formerly was Cafe Rio and Boston Market, Black rock has occupied the stand alone building on the N/W corner of Ray and Alma School Roads. We were delightedly surprised at the short lines on this grand opening morning. The interior has been decorated with cute fall accents. Drive thru is open with extra staffers taking orders on their screens in the parking lot. Sipping on my butterscotch soy breve,I wish my fellow Yelpers a good start to the week!

Fuel Your Story... even at 6:45PM When my friend Diane M. told me about the $2 medium drink Grand Opening special, I knew where I was going after work. Let's start with the vibe: This new Black Rock Coffee is spacious. It was all dressed up for Halloween. There's a massive rattlesnake wall mural that's desert-chic. It was as if Arizona itself winked at me. Fun fact: This spot used to be a Café Rio and a Boston Market, but honestly, Black Rock is the glow-up this corner deserves. Instead of burritos or rotisserie chicken, we now have neon energy, friendly baristas, and drinks that'll punch you in the neck. My Starburst Drink was the perfect mix of sugar rush and childhood. If happiness had a flavor, it would be this. If you need a new place to "fuel your story," stop on by, even if your story is just, "I survived Monday." You'll leave refreshed, energized, and maybe plotting your next excuse for a future visit.

Had to stop in to this new location in Chandler on the SW corner of Alma School & Ray. This location has turned over a couple of times. I remember it was a Boston Market for a long time and then Cafe Rio for a short time thereafter. Do we really need another coffee shop... not sure, but the coffee here is legit! I ordered a latte with a shot of sugar-free Irish Crème syrup and specified I wanted it as a breve. For those not in the know, a caffe breve is just like a caffe latte, but with half-and-half instead of milk. Ever since mainstream nutritionists abandoned the "lipid hypothesis" (all fat is bad!), this has been my go-to (good fats). The litmus test that this franchise passed was evident... I could actually taste the coffee component without having to add a second shot of espresso. And for some reason, the frothiness of the dairy foam was perfect... rich and creamy! The place is clean and brand spanking new, service was great, and now rivals my default choice for coffee in the neighborhood. (I held back one star because I have yet to try other menu items to be completely impressed...)

We got morning bun and banana bread and they were so good, not too sweet, the morning bun was so flaky and good amount of cinnamon, my husband didn't like banana at all but he turned out really liked the banana bread. I tried their pistachio cold foam latte with half sweet, and it was so good, the cold foam was light and airy, the syrup didn't overpower the taste of coffee. I usually don't drink sweet coffee, just like original hot latte, but I love pistachio so had to tried this, and it was really good. My husband got the hot latte and it was even better. The staff was nice, there was packed in weekend so kinda busy.

They have for here cups which is something I've noticed not a lot of coffee shops around the area carry anymore so that was awesome. The Moroccan latte was a HIT. Everyone was obsessed with this one, we also added pistachio cold foam on top. For the Moroccan we asked for it to be half sweet and it was still pretty sweet so be aware that this one is for the sweet tooth. The pistachio latte was delicious as well. The lemon poppy seed matcha was really good as a matcha, meaning the matcha was delcious and easy to ddrink. Not a lot of lemon flavor in it tho but the quality was good so no complaints. Their pastry selection is lacking however, this might be because we came a little later in the day but there was not a lot of options. The lemon scone was delicous but the raspberry key lime cupcake was far too sweet. However, this was an awesome shop and I would highly recommend it.

I said OK we'll go inside and purchase something and then he said no you can't sit here at all outside food or drinks, which is crazy because it's outside in the public but regardless, I said OK well I can go inside and purchase something first then before I sit down he's like no so what do you think you can buy an espresso shot and just know so if you guys want to go to a place of business, that is actually respectful, don't go here because they're disrespectful rude and he also didn't tell me his name but whoever the old guy is with the eyepatch with shaggy hair. I totally understand that rules are rules. However, there's a total respectful way that people can talk to customers. There's a total appropriate way to address signage. I didn't notice any signage and I would've been more than happy to have either gotten permission to eat on the patio if I would've known those were rules or purchased anything I needed to. He lost business. He definitely lost future customers.

The inside is very clean and relaxing and is a very good place to meet friends or study. I've placed pickup orders more times than I can count, and have also met up with friends and studied there a few times. The drinks are all so amazing!! My family and I have tried at least half of the menu and everything I've tried has been a new favorite. I am always torn between trying something new or getting the orange bianco milk tea, pistachio matcha, or Seoul coffee. They are all very balanced and not overly sweet and you can taste how much care for quality and detail was put into building all of these drinks. They also have options like lactose-free whole milk, oat milk, and 2%. The owner and staff are also always very friendly and always happy to help. Last July they had a banana pudding matcha that was really good (pictured here next to my usual pistachio matcha), and they have had a really good and unique variety of seasonal drinks in the past. I've also tried some of the croffles and those are also very good. I love trying new cafes but the quality and balance of TeaMakers and Company almost always wins in my opinion.

There are usually a couple gals behind the counter, watching the screen while you place your order ... waiting patiently as you peruse their many choices, trying to decide which tea to order. Our second visit we ordered the orange bianco, along with the cream earl grey milk teas. Both also wonderful. Today we ordered the raspberry chocolate milk tea and cocoa cream matcha. I may sound like a broken record, but yes, they were wonderful. It is NOT a boba tea shop; it was, but no longer. Incidentally, if you come the "back" way, entering off Warner vs Dobson, the signage on the back side still says Ni Hao. :-) Since we've already visited them three times, I think it's pretty clear we would highly recommend their teas.
