After consulting with my sister and buddy to not go to cold stones we stayed and tried it. Location is a cute little spot right off of California. I love the neon vibes from the signs and lights on the inside. There is more than enough seating and I enjoyed seeing the open kitchen view. Although they didn't have my butter pecan Marlon, the owner, suggested I try the chocolate ice cream instead. I'm usually not a chocolate person but I went for it and loved it. They have a nice selection of ice creams, brownies, cheesecake, creme brûlée and bread pudding to build a sundae or just to purchase. Or if your feeling up for the challenge try a stacked milkshake. I'm sure it taste just as good as it looked. I love that they do samples being that all their items are house made so you get to try before you make your final selection. I settled on a cheesecake sundae and it was amazing. Marlon was a sweetheart and added a candle after my sister and buddy told him it was my birthday month and even sang the song. Just had my annual birthday banana split! I spend a lot of time planning for this, and happy to have found Black Rock for this year's split. All of the ice cream flavors were delicious, I think I sampled 4-5. 2 were too soft, but all tasty. Would highly recommend adding marshmallow sauce and a peanut butter sauce. I'd ditch the hard chocolate shell, only thing I didn't like- tastes like fake, cheap plasticy chocolate. Very generous portions, nice staff, cheers to another awesome banana split! read more

I came right after a heavy dinner so I only had room for a small and was torn between the Espresso and Brazilian Passion Fruit. The worker said she can scoop both for me in the small size! Found this place when I had searched online for a milkshake place. Little did I know when I came here, the people were so welcoming and inviting. I felt like I had been going for years. Marlon, the owner, was super nice along with the other guy. I forgot his name... i apologize. They were telling me the story about the place and how each ice cream flavor is made every day. Fortunately, they let me try every flavor, and all were so delicious. It was hard to choose. I ended up getting the following: 1. Burn S'more - Highly recommend, its chocolatey goodness was so comforting, and the roasted marshmallow and graham cracker just wrapped it up to make the perfect shake. 2. Cereal chiller - I love cereal shakes, whether it's cinnamon toast crunch or fruity pebbles, you name I'm in. The rice krispy treats definitely added to the sugar high. I came for milkshakes, but I ended up ordering one of each item on the display case. I definitely recommend that if you like desserts like me and can never choose just one. 3. Cup o'mousse - pleasantly surprised how this little jar of goodness was everything I wanted and more. Chocolatey but not overly sweet or bitter. 4. Cheesecake - not your usual cheesecake. It's not overly dense and heavy. It was surprisingly light and airy. 5. Big ass cookie and milk - supersized version of the oreo cookie but better. 6. Crème brûlée - OMG, do not miss this. This was some world-class stuff that you would expect from some fancy high-end restaurant. The ambiance was amazing. They had local artwork done by artists and the coffee ice cream is made with the coffee that is right next door to them. Super bummed tonight. I read in reviews that this shop offers vegan options. NO, they do not. After reading that review, I called to ask what flavor(s) they have that are vegan/nondairy, and the person rattled off a ton. I was so excited! I showed up to realize that he had just read me all of their normal flavors, and none of those are vegan. They offer nothing suitable for those of us with dairy allergies. I missed the recent Yelp Elite gathering at Black Rock Dessert. As I was reading the event reviews, there were the usual 5 Star versions, and a few expected "It was all right" versions. What shocked me was the 1-Star review that didn't really read like one. I guess you can't please everyone, although my approach is that you give a hosting small business the benefit of the doubt, especially considering the resources required to put something like this on. So, as I finished up my review of the reviews, I decided that I needed to check out Black Rock Dessert for myself. I was up in Reno yesterday ahead of Gayle flying home from visiting a girlfriend who lives in Palm Springs. I was up early enough for ice cream (dessert first) followed by a burger and beer at nearby Royce. Black Rock Dessert and Old World Coffee Lab exist side-by-side on California Avenue. They're also connected inside with the restrooms in the middle. Both spaces are roomy, albeit a bit plain and bare. On the Black Rock Dessert side (the subject of this review), there's plenty of indoor seating, a few tables outside, and a cool large Black Rock Desert (I assume) picture on one wall. The sign behind the counter gives a nice overview of some really unique ice cream, sundae, and other specialty choices. I chose the pictured sundae, which I found to be very tasty, although I could have done without the cookie. This wasn't an "Oh Wow" moment within my "extensive" ice cream parlor "experience", but its serious stuff, and enough for me to come back and try out a few more options. The Elite event would have been nice, especially regarding the choices available and making friends, but I'm happy to report that Black Rock Dessert easily stands on its own. read more

My husband and I came in here for dessert before dinner on our anniversary. It was easy to find off the street which was nice. The staff were very kind and welcoming when we came in, They gave us plenty of time to look over the menu as we had never been in before and helped us make a decision on a good dessert. We went with the Dust Storm and I am so glad we chose to share it! The desserts are a pretty decent size and I can't imagine eating one by myself. They "stick" the jars to the bottom of the plate using marshmallow fluff so it doesn't get away while you're trying to eat/drink it. The atmosphere overall was very inviting and there's plenty of seating. They also have a few games for guests to enjoy/play while they are there and have signs encouraging you to bring your own and hang out for a while. The line seemed to move rather slowly on a Wednesday night, but the resulting concoctions clearly take time to create. My only recommendation for the owner (who was extremely nice) would be to make the interior seating area a little more welcoming, giving it a more comfortable feel. We drove around the block looking for an appropriate place to park and ended up parking in one of the eye doctors spots because they were closed.
