Hi...return visitor from many moons ago. I've been planning a date with my man for SO LONG to get the tomahawk steak. We made it happen on a Wednesday night! And I will say we enjoyed literally everything other than the main course. Don't get me wrong...we are filled to the brim with tasty food. Highly recommend the OYSTER APP (we could eat 100 if we had the money) and the PORK BELLY APP (super sweet and tangy). Also highly enjoyed the Lobster bites as an appetizer (ask for extra lime to squeeze on top). We believe the steak would have been better served intact so we could slice the medium-rare meat and savor the juices. The mac'n'cheese was perfectly creamy. The veggies were sweet and tender. Mac and cheese balls were good.. no better than most places tho The worst thing of the night was the fried lobster app. Remember the crunchies you used to get at long John silvers. .. basically fried batter that dripped off the fish into the basket. I absolutely loved this place! It's super cute and cozy inside and all of the staff were very friendly. They have a good selections of entrees, appetizers, and happy hour specials. Their wine menu is pretty decent as well. I HIGHLY recommend trying the fried green tomatoes and the lobster bites. I love the ceiling fixtures at this location. I asked for suggestions for a fancy Date Night for me and my husband because we are still long-distance and he was going to be in town this past weekend. Many friends recommended Black Walnut to me, and I am so glad we chose this restaurant to go out for dinner last Saturday night! I have heard of Black Walnut because I have eaten food prepared by Chef Black before at a Yelp Elite Event a while ago when he catered food at the Sam Noble Museum when me and fellow Yelp Elites got to tour the dinosaur museum. I was so happy to be coming back to some top-quality unique food creations by this talented chef! Ambience: There is not a separate parking lot, and I expected that since the restaurant was downtown, but it was not difficult to find nearby street parking by the apartments next door. I love the ceiling fixtures in this building. They almost look like inverted umbrellas with subtle lighting which gave the area a romantic feel. I like for a dinner setting to be dimly lit, but still be able to see my food while eating, which this place did a remarkable job of setting the mood, but paid attention to enough lighting. The restaurant seating area is not huge, but it was still spacious enough that it made me feel comfortable with the social distancing. There are one-sided booth seatings and also tables with chairs. My husband and I were seated at a table with chairs, close to the bar. Service: Allegra was our server and she was spectacular! It was probably the best service I have received in a LONG time! She was very knowledgeable about the menu items giving us suggestions as she described how the menu was sorted into flavor profiles. The oyster my husband ordered did not come out with our dinner, so she gave us two oysters on the house, free of charge, which was unexpected because it hadn't been that long since we ordered. It was refreshing to receive the best service in a while! FOOD: the food menu was very unique with the lightest foods listed at the top of the menu, and the heavier items towards the bottom. Next time I would love to try the fried green onions and also -Appetizers- *Baked Chevre* This was our favorite appetizer we have shared in quite a while. Baked chevre goat cheese in a hot pan mixed with whole garlic cloves, olive oil, peppers, and candied bacon. This really hit the spot especially when we dipped the garlic sourdough bread that came with it. Allegra also offered us more bread after she saw that we ran out. A must-have. My husband doesn't even like goat cheese, but for some reason he loved this appetizer! I'm guessing because it was seasoned so well. The dish was super creamy, but not too heavy. *Oysters* Both of us love oysters and these did not disappoint! Flavorful and satisfying. Simple, yet elegant presentation. -Main Entree- *Honey Roasted Lavender Chicken and Hot Water Cake* this chicken was roasted to perfection and the moistness came from the vegetables that were cooked in a light, yet flavorful gravy immersing the chicken. The presentation was eye-catching as are all the dishes at this restaurant. The "hot water cake" that came with it was a simple savory pancake..think of a pancake except without the sugar. It paired well as a bread to dip in the gravy/sauce. *Branzina with Saffron Raisin Couscous and Lobster Broth* My husband wanted seafood and this item on the menu caught his eye. He was very satisfied with this dish and raved about the lobster broth! I tried the fish and loved it as well. -Drinks- I asked our waitress, Allegra, for a drink that wasn't too sweet and she gave some recommendations. *No Sleep Till Brooklynn * If you like smokey drinks, you will love this one! Of course I had to get the popular smokey drink that I've been seeing everywhere on social media! This was a strong drink, but it hit the spot, and the entertainment factor wasn't too shabby, either. It was served in a wine glass covered with a Beauty and the Beast-style glass encasing that kept the smoke in tact until it was ready to drink and the server released the glass. Beautiful presentation! I wish I had taken a video of this, but I did get a picture. This drink has a coconut-infused dry vermouth, house coffee liqueur CBD, chocolate bitters which was hickory-smoked and pecan-infused old overholt rye. *The House* My husband ordered this classic drink. Made with black-walnut infused bourbon and black walnut bitters. *Red Wine--Malbec* This red wine was delicious. It paired well with my dinner of chicken and also dessert! It complemented the berries that came with the rum cake. -Desserts- *Rum Cake with Berries* I love that Black Walnut has one dessert that is special to them. We are in love!! Fan girl in the biggest way possible with this restaurant since our first dinner. The food and cocktail program is terrific. What really makes the experience special is the amazing team that works here. We were lucky enough to have Darlene walk us through the menu. A group of 4 of us went to Black Walnut to celebrate my birthday. We were wanting something new and unique, and this definitely fit the bill. The menu can be a bit intimidating due to the interesting combinations, but rest assured, everything we tried was very good! We started with several of the small plates to share...fried quail with hush puppies, fried green tomatoes, and baked chèvre. I'm a cheese lover, so the chèvre was my favorite. My husband was very pleased with his meal, the tomahawk steak, which he shared with my son. He loved the flavor, awesome presentation and the mac and cheese served alongside it. I had planned to order one of the fish dishes, but sadly, they were out of both. I ordered the lavender chicken, and it was very good. I loved the veggies it was served with as well. My mom ordered the scallops, and she said they were amazing. For dessert we were allowed to order from La Baguette next door. I guess they have a partnership with them. I had an outstanding meal at the Black Walnut while visiting on business. Sat at the bar, and met their great bartender, Brooks, who gave me some good recommendations. Started with an old fashioned that Brooks concocted from his own lavender bitters and rye whiskey recipe. Smooth and tasty with a nice, light and spicy (A). I enjoyed the English Beef rib plate. The beef was excellent (A) with a tender, short rib texture and a medium, wine flavored mushroom sauce. The kale salad (A) was fresh and light. It had tangy apples in it which gave the dish a nice balance. The last accompaniment were lightly glazed hush puppies (A)...delicious! Went here for a dinner date with my wife and we left very happy and satisfied. We started off with drinks, two amaretto sours that were good and made very creatively. Appetizers: Lamb Chops and Baked Chèvre. The lamb chops were delicious! Fall off the bone amazing served with an excellent dipping sauce and some honey glazed hush puppies which were also good. The baked chèvre was amazing, it had some olives that We had to pick out but none the less delicious. For entrees we ordered the English beef ribs and the strip steak. Both entrees were good, the beef ribs were served with a kale salad which was a nice touch and the strip steak was served with potatoes. I think the strip steak was a little bit better the beef ribs weren't the leanest but both were pretty good. We also got a side of baked Mac and cheese and it was really good but it came out a little cold (a little miscommunication with our server I believe) but if it was warm I think it would've been amazing! We got two small desserts from La Baguette next door and it was a perfect touch to end the meal. The ambiance of the place was great, our server was really nice she was a sweetheart. Stopped in while in town for work (was walking distance from office). Great spot with fun cocktail and dinner menu. Started with the cardamom roasted beat salad (FYI it's a dinner portion not an actual starter). Ate little over half as was saving room to enjoy the honey lavender rosted chicken. Our trip was a Sunday afternoon for Mother's Day. It was way too bright and felt like we were eating in the food court at the Mall. I can,however, see how it could look lovely at night. But since they didn't make any adjustments, I have to give it a 3 stars for Ambiance. I'm sure the night time vibe is better. Now....let me explain Food. Excellent. I'm certainly not a food critic and cannot tell you about the hints of this and the subtle flavors of that but I do like what I like. I had the English ribs. Sooooo good. The small salad that came with it was a perfect and nice balance to the rib flavors. It was a great way to cleanse the palette between bites so you can get the full experience again. The hush puppies were very good as well. The other items at the table were the king salmon which I was told was delicious. The lavender chicken I also was told was great. I did sample the little pearl onions that accompanied it and they were great. Sweet but not too sweet. And the onion was soft but not too soft to be a mush in your mouth. The other item was the house salad which looked yummy for a house salad. Service. My rating of 2 1/2 stars I think is generous. Upon sitting it was close to five minutes before we were acknowledged by our server and this was in passing. Then another 2-3 minutes before water. The drink menu was on the table but wasn't pointed out and I missed it (maybe that was my fault) but I feel a server who makes contact should point out the drink menu, let you know they will be right back with water. This did not happen. Disappointing. Our server presented the menu in a very efficient and professional way and came back to take our order. As I said food was awesome. After dinner we waited for an extended period of time (with dirty dishes on the table) to be acknowledged. When we finally were we asked for a box for the leftovers. Next thing I know we were handed a box and the check????? WHAT YOU DON'T OFFER COFFEE????? DESSERT? I don't get it. Server training 101....up sale!!!! Just terrible. IMO. The final blow was the bread. I'm used to restaurants having bread, offering bread, bringing bread.....something. This restaurant and this server didn't. When we asked for bread the server said she can bring some but it will be $2. What ever, I'm about to drop $200 for this meal what do I care about $2. I took a picture of the bread. IT WAS TOAST. LOL. And I will point out only toasted on one side. If that is the bread you offer, just say 'NO We do not have bread'. We wanted medium rare. After receiving the steak, it came out MEDIUM/well done and cool/slightly warm. The flavor was amazing but it was not as tender as I wanted. Most likely because it was slightly over cooked. SOOO SAD. for an 85$ steak, I really do expected the cook on it to be on point! What an amazing dinner! We absolutely enjoyed our first (of many more to come) meal here. The staff was so welcoming and friendly. Our waiter, Ned, truly made our experience one to remember. Full of detailed information about each dish and offering suggestions when we asked for guidance. The restaurant is so nice offering a relaxed glam vibe that doesn't feel pretentious. Glam it up with your attire or keep it low scale business casual. Food details: We started with a bottle of rose' and chicken jerk lollipops-though they weren't actually lollipop'd which was a bit disappointing but the flavor made up for the presentation-plus they even let us try a new appetizer that they will be introducing soon--fried shrimp & grit balls. These were an explosion of flavor and texture that we really enjoyed. For our main course we got the 28 day aged tomahawk with mushroom sauce, Peruvian potatoes, and mac $ cheese. Man... I really didn't want to have to leave this review, but here we are. We've been here a total of 4 times now, and have had a pretty inconsistent ride since our first stellar experience. I should mention that we have ordered the same thing each time as well. Never the biggest issues, but seems to always be something, with last night being the deal breaker. Trip #1 was phenomenal, you can read my other review about that one. Capital WOW, what a great visit! Trip #2 was nearly as good, but resulted in a billing error that I emailed the manager about. I'm guessing someone fat fingered the total, but they added an extra two hundred bucks to our meal. It was near Christmas so it took a few days, but eventually the GM resolved it, and said she would even send us a gift card for the hassle. Not the biggest deal, though we never got the promised gift card. Trip #3 they had a new person serving drinks. The cinnamon stick they char for a drink had been done incorrectly and heavily ashed into my drink, unknown to me at the time. Not the biggest of infractions, but I got a big ole mouthful of burnt cinnamon ash in my mouth which as I learned, makes things taste like an ashtray for a while. Kinda killed my appetite, and not what I wanted before my big meal, but nothing I could do about it. Trip #4 was last night for an anniversary dinner. We booked a 7:15 reservation and were seated promptly. The first thing I noticed was that the Tomahawk had gone up by 60% to $150! I know inflation has been rough, but good grief, it's nowhere near 60%. Nevertheless, we had been drooling over it for a few days leading up to our date so after our drinks and appetizer were in, we were ready to place our order. Unfortunately for us and our anniversary dinner, we were told they were out!! I almost couldn't believe it, I asked what he meant and he advised they "sold out." No alternates, no suggestions, just tough luck, find something else. I didn't press it, I just asked for our check and luckily was able to make a reservation elsewhere. But seriously, how do you allegedly "sell out" of steak by 7pm on a Thursday when you don't open until 4? The place wasn't exactly busy, we were 1 of 3 tables at the time. So unless we just missed a rush that came in between 4 and 6 and ate 20lb of 28 day aged beef at $150 a pop, it tells me that they must have been out for more than just that day and apparently nobody was willing for find any sort of alternate in the meantime. I am sure they don't keep 100 on hand, and maybe their supplier was behind, etc etc, but I mean even Homeland has dry aged steak. I don't know who manages the place nowadays, but I'd be pulling my hair out if I ran the kitchen and found out that we had been out of our most exclusive item for days. To me, that speaks volumes. And my main point with all of this is while none of our issues have been the worlds biggest deal, it just shouldn't happen period, big or small, and especially in regards to the price they now ask. They are asking NYC steakhouse pricing in OKC and delivering nowhere near the same level of experience and it just doesn't make sense. Part of what you pay for at those places is that next level service. If you run out of something, you better have a back up plan, not just tell your customers tough luck. I love Black Walnut, and I've referred quite a few people here just by word of mouth. But I sadly don't see us coming back for a while until they can get their issues worked out. The food is great, when it's done right and when it's available, but it's just not worth the roller coaster that we seem to have to ride to eat here. I look forward to one day updating this to say things are back to where they were, but until then, I can't recommend coming here right now. One of the best steaks I've ever had. This restaurant sits on the quieter side of the city - Deep Deuce. I picked this spot for our anniversary and it was great. The place was nice, but also had a casual feel to it. No need to dress up if you don't want to. I can see myself grabbing an evening drink on their patio with friends. For our appetizer, we had the chargrilled oysters and fried quail. My drink of choice was the Karma's Cup, and let me tell you this glass was the size of my face and very delicious. I love dry aged steaks. We ordered ours medium rare and it was just melt-in-your-mouth goodness! But what really set the dish apart was the mushroom sauce. Phenomenal. Went there recently and was really disappointed. We made a reservation for inside at a specific time that they verified they had indoor seating available. When we got there, they were like do you want to sit outdoors the tables and bar seating is full. Fortunately two bar seats became available so we took them. The grilled oysters were just blobs of melted cheese with no taste. I ordered the cardamom roast beef salad which was excellent followed by the English beef ribs. The rib was well cooked but the kale slaw was pretty meh. My husband got the strip which was tough and bland. The side dish Brussel sprouts were tasty, though. Between us we got four different cocktails and they were mostly ok. But nothing I would re-order. We had pre-dinner cocktails at R and J Supper Club that were better. Honestly, I was underwhelmed. The service is awkward at best. The food is good, with the menu divided into sections of taste, rather than traditional service. We had the crispy bacon, smoked Mac n cheese bites and fried green tomatoes. All were pretty good. The reason for the low review is the inordinate amount of time it took for the entrees to arrive- way too slow. The flat iron steak was good, as was the ahi tuna. But it just doesn't seem very well managed- so while I'm rooting for them, given the competition in the city, they need to do better. They were also out of a few menu items and wines. Again, this reflects poor management. Hopefully this corner gets its act together when Grey Sweater opens as the Deep Deuce area needs these to succeed. One last gripe- if you're going to be an upscale and modern eatery, you shouldn't allow customers in ball cap Updated 2/29/2020 This place seems to have gotten worse- terrible service, over salted and food served at room temperature. Not sure why it's crowded, but if you're a foodie and like good service, this place does not deliver. Felt like Applebee's would've been a better experience. From the three months of living in Oklahoma City, I can already confidently place Black Walnut as a top five contender. Yes, it is just that good - and unfortunately for me, it is only a 10 minute walk away. Upon entry, you can't help but be instantly wow-ed by the well put together interior. Tall ceilings, ample lighting, and wooden all the things create an ambiance that oozes class while remaining ultra modern and practical. For our first time here, we decided to go all out and essentially order everything on the menu: fried quail, burrata, lamb ribs, pork belly, chargrilled oysters, and the luxurious 28 day aged tomahawk steak. Some of these dishes were so shockingly good they deserve their own review. Fried Quail (5/5): Served with a green tomato jelly and blue corn, this small poultry did not disappoint. These birds were tender, juicy, and flavorful - even the white meat portions. Chargrilled Oyster (4/5): Who knew oysters in Oklahoma could taste so fresh? Even with the generous coating of heated parmesan and cambozola cheese, the juicy, briny freshness of the oysters still punched through. This was perfect for a New Englander who misses Poseidon's bounty. Lamb Ribs (5/5): These small, bite-sized lamb ribs were incredibly addicting. This was no doubt also aided by the delightful brown sugar glaze that coated these tender morsels and the fresh, slightly acidic profile of the chimmichurri sauce. 28 Day Aged Tomahawk (6/5): Yes, this behemoth of a steak breaks the laws of rankings. Easily shareable amongst 4 people, the funky, beefy flavor is fully enhanced by the dry aging and permeates into every bite. Perfectly seared and juicy, even the massive bone was worth taking home.
