Dense crumbs that didn't fall off - a hint of cinnamon - and a buttery not too dense and not to airy cake - how can you go wrong. Blackstone is a phenomenal West Village staple. There are three great things about this coffee shop/bodega: (1) the owner (if he doesn't own the place, the owner owes him a lot); (2) the business hours (Blackstone is open early in the morning, hours before other stores are); and, (3) their ice and drip coffee (more to come below). The presumed owner has a quick wit, which he readily shares with customers. The staff's constant buzz of activity give the store energy. And the smell of coffee is inviting. These elements combine to create a welcoming ambiance you want to return to. Their ice and drip coffee are exceptional. You'll be happy with your choice if you get 'em. The reason I didn't give Blackstone five stars is their specialty coffee is so-so. The times I ordered espresso drinks I was surprised a coffee shop can swing from excellent drip coffee to subpar espresso drinks. Stick with the ice and dripped coffee and you won't be disappointed from this West Village gem. read more

It's been a week since I discovered Black Stone and I've eaten all 3 daily meals each day + snacks and more coffee than is decent. My favorites include: Freshly roasted coffee, moist scones with berries that burst on your tongue, decadent hummus fudge, cozy and delectable soups, seafood salad that's a meal, handmade sandwiches with the perfect symphony of crisp, tangy toppings, and egg salad that has me getting up in the middle of night for spoonfuls. New coffee place out near the Christopher Street stop and Citibike station. Large selection of baked goods as well as sandwiches/wraps/etc, which is surprising considering the cramped interior. Friday morning, surveyed the pastries behind the glass while waiting in the moderate line. Ordered the large "Stone Coffee" and a Pumpkin Raisin Scone ($5ish altogether). Items come out fast, and as I get things ready at the station, realize there's no milk to be found. ad to go back to the counter for them to add the necessary milk/sugar (don't forget to ask when ordering!). The scone itself is gigantic; a not-too-overwhelming pumpkin flavor that didn't really go with the raisins, but nonetheless easy to eat. Coffee is strong, pairing with the scone just fine. Service here is fantastic (the guys behind the counter are friendly) and the value is way better than their gourmet-coffee counterparts. I see this as an option somewhere between the food cart coffee guys and the higher end ones. Good to have around. read more

One of my favorite Sunday spots! WV doesn't have a ton of bagel places so whenever I come down here, Blackstone is my go to. They have an assortment of sandwiches, wraps, bagels and specials. They also have tons of drinks, coffees, teas, smoothies! The best part is probably it being in such a prime location, great for people watching. Average spot, average coffee shop. There was about 4 people in line ahead of me and my friend. I got an iced coffee which was bleh and she got an iced latter which she said was awful. Staff was really nice though and it's cute inside, like your typical neighborhood coffee shop. Maybe Saturday afternoons are particularly busy and this spot would be fine on a weekday. My friend ordered a BEC, which we waited 20-30 minutes outside in the freezing cold for, since there is very limited space inside. She said it was good though! Just an average spot, nothing special. Pretty disappointed with my breakfast this morning. I ordered one of their special wraps on the board. Suppose to have eggs, avocado, turkey bacon, red beans and salsa....my wrap was missing the avocado and the salsa. Spent 9 dollars for a wrap with eggs, turkey bacon and beans. Come on now. Thats rather ridiculous. 9 bucks for that? Got the wrap and brought it to work. I'm not going to walk back for avocado and salsa. Not a good way to start the day! read more

There's a line out the door for Blackstone while Starbucks sits empty down the block - and for good reason. The family run operation offers more than just great coffee, custom sandwiches and salads - they offer a bit of what we call crave...community. Sammy, the patriarch offers a hearty welcome to everyone who walks through his door "Hey cousin! How are you? What are you having today?" If you're lucky he knows you by name - he always asks about my wife Anna - you feel extra special when he calls you by your real name. He sons Ray and Alex are equally likable, albeit less gregarious as their pop, but they're learning. Tables and umbrellas set up outside with Sinatra music have made Blackstone the cool hang-out these days. The staff hustles orders out to those who've already ordered while in-line you'll find Wall Street brokers, a dad with kid in tow headed to PS3, New York's Finest from the 6th Precinct, an old-school Villager like me who's had a footprint here since the 60's. I miss the time where every shop in the Village was owned and operated by it's proprietors and made the Village... well more like a village.
