Sad to leave this review as I felt that blu jam was a solid brunch spot for a few years but it seems like quality had gone down significantly. Service is pretty barebones if not straight up lacking, you step in and not a single person greets you and the servers just look at you and walk past, never seen another sit down restaurant where I have to actively look for someone to be served. The French press was very muddy which used to be a consistent item here. The breakfast burrito extremely bland and the aioli they provide with it is somehow just as bad. The turkey chili they had as a seasonal was way too watery to be chili and just gloopy enough to not be a soup. Even the tables are too tiny to hold more than 3 plates at a time before you start having to play Tetris. Came here around 12pm on a Monday for lunch. You walk in and greeted and told to sit anywhere and scan the menu on the table. What they fail to tell you is you need to order over your phone or at the ordering station and no one comes to take your order. So my toddler, dad and I sat there for 20 minutes just waiting to come until I turned around and saw people in line and saw the ordering station. I haven't been to BJC since covid and wasn't impressed, but decided to try it again on Sunday because my first choice was closing at 2 (BJC was open to 3). I'm glad I did. I was annoyed that I had to scan the QR code to get the menu, but was happily surprised to see not only a menu on the board behind the counter and even a printed menu. The choices were quite interesting and deep. My Estonian companion had the brunch burger (egg on top); messy but delicious. I had the mushroom salad and added fried tofu that whimsically took the form of a soy funnel cake; excellent all around. It was not crowded so I could not judge the staff under crunch time, but they were very friendly and helpful and I have confidence in a good experience even at lunch. That's all gone now. No one greets you when you walk in, and there's no clear system. After I asked, a busser told me to pick any table, so I sat outside and waited. No server ever came, but a busser eventually dropped off some condiments. That was it. I saw the QR code, but the ordering process didn't work. After asking again, I was told to go wait in line at an ordering station. This time I was told I could pick another seat inside, from a particular section near the front. When my drink arrived, the manager didn't know who it was for. The food was mediocre. No one checked in, though bussers were quick to clear plates. I watched another guest walk out after being ignored. They've clearly cut servers to reduce costs, but they've also cut out the experience. Most of the breakfast options come with Blue Jam's play on hash browns/home fries; which my sister and I started calling "potato cereal", because that's basically what it is. Tiny, crispy, delectable little cubes of golden brown potato that go amazingly with eggs, salsa and toast. I'm big on texture and these were great; so scoopable and cute. But most importantly, delicious! We also tried various juices: I got orange juice with an added ginger shot, which was invigoratingly refreshing. Be warned, parking sucks. There's no way around it. In the middle of Brentwood, Blu Jam Cafe sits in a popular spot, so you'll have to find parking somehow. Protip - there's residential parking behind the cafe, but be ready to spend a little time looking for parking. Onto the food... We ordered the Crunch French Toast ($15.95) and it was decent; not a whole lot that's super special. However, I do appreciate that it wasn't naturally super sweet. You can always add sugar to a dish, but hard to subtract. So, bonus points for that. We also tried the Breakfast Panini (eggs, bacon, cheddar, chipotle aioli on sourdough with a side of grilled potatoes) and that was a 10/10 dish. Bottom Line: Probably a tiny bit inferior to its original Sherman Oaks counterpart, Blu Jam Cafe still offers a pretty darn good breakfast menu. I admit the crunchy French toast is one of my favorite breakfast items in the Los Angeles area. I ordered it to go. That was a mistake. Mostly because the burden of its presentation falls squarely on you to dress up the French toast. Blueberries and strawberries were sided out. The vanilla bean paste was also portioned on the side. I wanted everything 'on.' Also the restaurant foisted the vanilla paste as an only option and basically told me you shall not be permitted to consume this with syrup. That's unfortunate. As I believe both kinda work. The French toast was cooked pretty well. Had a crunchy exterior, and a moist, spongy egg material just as I like.
