I originally found BONSAI on IG while looking for a matcha spot that stayed open later, and somehow that turned into me coming here almost every day. I started with their pandan cream top matcha and was hooked. But after being stuck on that for a while, I finally tried the Matcha x Matcha with the matcha cream top and THAT was the moment I was blown away. The matcha is deep, rich and actually tastes like matcha, and the slightly salty cream top balances it perfectly without making it overly sweet. I've tried a lot of matcha spots around LA and have definitely had some really good ones, but BONSAI consistently gives me exactly what I want. It's officially my favorite matcha spot. I've also tried their strawberry matcha, and my daughter, who's the coffee drinker, became a BONSAI fan after I introduced her to it too. And don't skip the ube cornflake brownie, it's a MUST. I've tried the matcha cookie and turkey panini too, but I'm choosing that ube brownie every time. The staff is always so sweet, which makes all my repeat visits even better. Came here on a weekday afternoon and this place was PACKED. Most of them were probably college students and the crowd leant toward younger. The staff who took my order was friendly and we had an exchange of convo. You can ask for a code for the wifi network and the limit was 2 hours. It's pretty cool that they generate a code for each person which I perosnally never saw in other cafes. I found a spot at the communal table and most people came here solo or with a friend. Spots were close to each other so having space was not so much of a concept here unless you can find your own desk. I got the biscoff latte and liked it. This place was very loud so if you want to work make sure you bring a headphone. It's good to do some work in between errands but I wouldn't stay here for too long. read more

I visited Bonsai Coffee Bar with a friend on a weekend afternoon and it was packed. I tried their Earl Grey Latte with oat milk, and I waited around 10 minutes before receiving my drink. The Earl Grey Latte was perfectly balanced, and I liked the strong taste that went along with oat milk. Decided to grab lunch down the street so we dropped by this coffee shop to try! It's been on my list for a while so I'm glad we finally got to check it out. Parking is awful. As usual around LA in general, no parking. You don't really want to pay for parking either for a quick coffee run. I drove around the block and found an open meter 2 blocks down and just walked. Unfortunately though, it was only a 15 minute meter so by the time we got to the cafe and waited in line outside, stepped foot inside, my bf had to walk back to the meter to put in more time. Surprised how busy it was and probably took 40 minutes total. It is really pretty inside but super loud. Lots of people reading or studying but I honestly don't know how they could because it was just so loud inside. I ordered a Bonsai Latte for my bf and a Biscoff Cookie Latte for myself. Haven't had a good Biscoff cookie latte in a while so I was very excited. I sat at an open seat at the bar but it's a weird spot. They put mobile orders on the bar so people are just constantly reaching over you. Idk how the girl studying next to me could even deal with that. Cute coffee shop with good drinks! I needed a place to grab a matcha and take care of some work, and found this place on social media. They were pretty busy, but everything was quick -- my matcha and breakfast burrito came out within minutes of ordering. Prices were pretty high imo ($9 for a matcha with cream top, $15 breakfast burrito), but it is LA. The burrito was good, but honestly pretty small and not very stuffed, and the matcha was good as well, definitely very strong and high caffeine. There was plenty of seating, even though it was packed, and it seemed like a cute place to get some work done/study. Only thing is it can be a bit noisy, and you'll likely have strangers sharing your table, so not recommended if you have to take meetings. I deducted 1 star cause I felt like the customer service was lacking a little. The girl who took my order was a little short and barely responded. When I was having trouble logging on to the WiFi (it kept kicking me off on my laptop -- I ended up not even being able to use it, which defeated the purpose of me finding a cafe to work in, and had to use my hotspot), she didn't help in any way and just told me to try a new code but even after it still didn't work and I went back, she lowkey ignored me and was keeping busy in the back to avoid me it felt like. Hmm, I got their Earl Grey latte, half sweet, with the blueberry croissant, and both were delicious! I love how you can still taste the coffee flavor in the latte. It isn't overpowered by the milk or the Earl Grey flavoring, and the half-sweet was perfect. The croissant had a thin layer of blueberry filling, which wasn't overly sweet and went really well with the pastry. Met a few people outside the shop who raved about Bonsai and said they're regulars as it's just that good. However, just as I was pulling out from the structure, there was a spot that freed up. When it came to the interior, I liked the Japandi aesthetic that they were going for. It was definitely very busy at the time with lots of people sitting around and studying/working. When browsing the menu, I was curious about the Okinawa latte. I also grabbed an ube cornflake brownie from the front. The latte took a few minutes to be ready, so I appreciate the quickness of the service. However, both of the items were underwhelming. The latte was didn't taste good and I ended up not finishing it. The ube cornflake brownie was very sweet. The ube part left a better impression since it wasn't too sweet. After ordering, the server usually provides a code for you to enter in order to access their WiFi. You need to receive a new code every 2 hours before being booted off. Since I came on a Friday evening, my drink took around 10 minutes to make. I got the double matcha (my usual go to at most matcha places) & it didn't disappoint at all. It was the perfect amount of sweetness, creaminess, & richness. I was in awe by how perfectly crafted it was. Later on I got hungry so I ordered two spam musubi. It was nothing special but it hit the spot. Overall, I would come back again if I was ever in the area. It's not in my top 5 favorite matcha cafes in LA. The food options here are very appealing and I went with a blueberry croissant which I felt was unique. They bake it in house and I enjoyed that the croissant was soft & had a subtle taste of blueberry. I opted for the hojicha latte which had strong notes of tea, perfect to keep me awake while I work. The aesthetic inside is beautiful and there were cute plants sprinkled throughout. This place is so popular and packed. The time limit is 90 min for wifi, which is quite an indicator of how busy it is. It can be difficult to find a charger outlet when it's busy though so bring your laptop charged when you get here. There is parking downstairs in the lot but only in spots that are designated for Bonsai which is sprinkled throughout the structure. This is for good reason too, definitely goes by quick and your order is ready in a few minutes. I loved both of our drinks and I'm not a huge coffee lover. I tried out this cute café in Sawtelle with my roommate while studying for midterms, and overall, I thought it was pretty good. The interior and decor are super cute, and there are plenty of seats available. However, it does get pretty busy, so spots fill up quickly. The noise level is generally manageable since most people are working, but it can occasionally get crowded and loud. I usually wear noise-canceling AirPods, so it didn't bother me much. The baristas are also really sweet and kind whenever I interact with them. I ordered the matcha latte, and I'd say it was pretty good. Definitely not the best I've had, but also far from the worst, and probably one of the better ones in the area that I've tried. The price was pretty average for L.A. and the cup size was decent enough to last me through about five hours of studying there. The only downside is that the free Wi-Fi only lasts for two hours. After that, I had to switch to my phone hotspot, so I'd recommend bringing a power bank if you plan on staying for a while. When logging into the Wi-Fi, it asks for a phone number, so I'm not sure if it tracks access by device IP or phone number. Also for my people taking the bus back to UCLA, note that there is no visible bus sign due to construction in the area. It's really confusing at first and you will get scared, but my tip is to wait with a small group of people around where the sign should be and usually the bus will stop (sometimes it doesn't though unfortunately). Overall, this is a really cute and nice café for getting work done or doing some studying as long as you don't mind the time-limited wifi. read more

It also came with a side of hot sauce and a bed of arugula that was incredibly bitter. Personally, I wouldn't order these again. PANDAN COCONUT MATCHA - 7.50 Surprisingly, the earthiness of matcha went pretty well with the nutty, vanilla flavors of pandan and coconut. While the combination was quite good and not too sweet, I did taste less of the matcha than the syrups. My friend got the iced matcha latte with the strawberry cream top. We both liked the perfectly sweet and salty cream, but thought the matcha flavor was incredibly weak. Can you please bring back the pistachio cream top matcha? Thanks! Bonsai has a heavy hand with their matcha powder. It's a bit astringent, coating the mouth with an earthy flavor. I really enjoy their Okinawa brown sugar matcha. I didn't completely love the coconut syrup in my matcha, but I liked the coconut water matcha (although next time I'll ask for it to be sweetened!). I feel like because their matcha is a bit more on the astringent side, a sweetener like agave would balance it out! I've also tried and loveee their unagi avocado musubi.
