Great food; friendly staff. The Barbacoa tacos are out of this world. I added a side of mole sauce to the top of them which add a bit of sugary spice. The chips and salsa kept coming and we never had the opportunity to ask for a drink refill, because the waitress was always on top of it. If you're in the mood for a spicy authentic green chili this is not the place for you. I do have to say though, they still have some of the best table salsa arround. Where's the beef? I came here after starving myself all day at work. Needless to say I left still hungry! I ordered the carne asada tacos with was topped with mostly salad greens along with minimal sour cream and a few strands of cheese. Had brunch this morning and it was soo freaking good. Never been there before but I had 2 $3 mimosas and the sopes which were light and delicious with sauces decorating the plate and the whole nine. The service was the best. Cheyenne was our server and she was cheerful and helped us with choosing our meals,. I love excellent customer service!!! What happened to this place? It used to be amazing, but I moved away for a few years and when I finally went back I was shocked. The food was flavorless and dry. The first time i went there it was pretty bad. My friend had the rellenos and I had fish tacos. The salsa was bland. Second time back food was still disappointing. It's a noise hole. Like eating at a train station with everyone screeching metal chairs on concrete, babies crying and stupid music blaring. I have to yell to communicate every time I'm there. The food is ok, but its slopped on the plates and it all looks the same. Good service but the noise level sucks. And when it's really busy you are crammed tight in there like feeding time at the zoo. Rubbing elbows with all kinds of sick people. No thank you.. right next door is Taco Belle which has comparable entrees for way less and its quiet there. read more

Back in my vegetarian days, I was a bigger fan of Blue Bonnet than I am now because of their color-coded menu. Anything that is in red is vegetarian. It made me feel included and special - which is usually the opposite of how a vegetarian can be treated when eating out. It's true that the salsa and chips costs $1 and is far from homemade tasting. I really enjoy their vegetarian tamales though - they are seriously spicy! The burritos, tostadas and tacos are only OK. The service is usually pretty good and it's not too hard to get a large group seated. The patio can be very nice in the summer, but its the crazy bar atmosphere that I really dig. read more

Ate in the extra room with about 80 other people and buffet style was offered. There were chicken taquitos, guac, chips and meatballs for appetizers. Chile rellenos, hard/soft beef or chicken tacos, rice and beans for dinner. The only edible things were the: meatballs, chile rellenos and guac. This is a quintessential Mexican dive. The atmosphere is laid back and relaxed, and the food is generally pretty good. The chips and salsa are the best in the city, and the chimichangas are excellent. The one drawback to the food is that everything is drenched in cheese so I usually ask for light cheese, which is an easy enough solution. The servers are very friendly and the food always comes quickly. Overall, given the low prices and overall pretty good quality, this place is worth it. read more

Absolutely the worst Mexican food I've ever eaten in my life. My wife ordered the fish taco plate and got food poisoning and was in the emergency room for four hours being treated for food poisoning. This place is fantastic. I love the outdoor patio. I gave celiac disease and this may be the most knowledgeable restaurant I've ever been to. They have a separate gluten free menu. It's the same reason I don't eat the mush called Mexican food. I had, of all things, a Mexican hamburger. What a mess. It was like ordering a kids meal. A portion of awful beans covered with an awful piece of meal (the so called hamburger), then a soft taco, then covered with a pound of that terrible yellow/orange cheese that most likely came out of a can or box. I went to Blue Bonnet the other night and noticed that they have a gluten free menu. I recently learned that I should be avoiding gluten, so I thought I'd give the menu a whirl - totally expecting to find one thing on it and order from the regular menu. I was pleasantly surprised to find a wide variety of menu items to choose from, and even enjoyed the gluten free chips (which the waiter quickly offered when he noticed I was reading the gluten free menu - that was nice!) If you have a gluten issue - I'd recommend trying out Blue Bonnet. You won't feel left out of the regular menu when you see all of the options! read more

Blue Bonnet is my favorite Mexican restaurant in Denver, period. I've gotten a lot of flack over the years for bestowing this crown on them - the fact that it's not as "authentic" as other places (don't care), the not-so-upscale decor (really don't care), the "questionable" quality of the food (I've always enjoyed what I've gotten there - never had a problem). To me, it's just simple, good Mexican fare at a very good price - I'm not looking for the Cadillac of Mexican restaurants here, and neither should anyone else who enters this establishment. I've been by this place hundreds of times but never stopped in there. With a name like Blue Bonnet Cafe I honestly thought it was a burger type joint and not a Mexican place. Bad me for not checking Yelp on it first. Now a little disclaimer, I really am not a fan of Mexican food. With that said, I ordered the chicken quesadillas. They were very soggy. No crispiness to them at all. The chicken didn't taste right. I got a margarita to drink and it was pretty powerful, though pricey. With so many other restaurants on South Broadway that have more to offer, I really don't see a single reason to ever step foot in here again. It offers nothing I'm interested in. read more

Bad doesn't even come close to our experience. The service was terrible. Our server "put up " with being there and serving people. The food was horrible. Salt is the main seasoning. The lettuce and tomatoes had no taste. Fresh is not a part of their produce. Go back home and make your own, you'll be much better off. read more

Solid. It seems some of the previous reviewers had some tough experiences but ours was pretty good! We had a party of 8 people ranging in ages 19-89. Our server was super attentive & friendly always clearing plates, checking on us, making sure we were topped off on water. Everything came out fast and was all pretty good stuff! My husband remarked that "they had kicked the salsa up a notch" since the last time he was here. We felt that was a very positive change. I thought the flavor was great- not as hot as some places but the flavor quotient was very good! Some items are "muy delicioso", others are much less than edible. The chichirones (which I probably spelled incorrectly.) is not food. I am convinced that this item is some form of chewy crispy leather. It's kind of hit and miss around the menu. I love their green chili and pork topped french fries or carnitas burritos. After looking at a few different options, I chose to have my 40th birthday party at the Blue Bonnet last weekend. There are many reasons I chose to do my event at this restaurant, but most importantly is because of the owner, Marci. With a group of 50 women, I needed the party to be perfect. Marci contacted me multiple times to cover every single detail from start to finish. They have many options for food and drinks and Marci made the planning process easy with no stress. She accommodated all of my needs, plus made special arrangements for my guests with dietary restrictions and gluten free needs. The private room is spacious and beautiful. The set-up was perfect. And everyone was very happy that there was ample free parking. Our group of 50 had private servers and everything went perfectly. The service was amazing and everyone was very happy. The food was wonderful and my guests went back for seconds. Plus, the margaritas were amazing. Several of my friends have now decided to have parties there as well. If you are looking for a place to hold a large or small event, I urge you to check out this family-owned restaurant. Have not been in lately, we we'er surprised to see a new menu...after so many years....We like the change.. It's good to see you can still order your favorite combo.. ( our waitress seemed shocked but was over joyed when she took out her cheat sheet ) Out of habit we still order by the letter.. I always get combo "L" or combo "M". This place has been here for years which in my book is a great sign. Haha. I thought it was Blue Bonnet ice cream when I walked by for years. My girlfriend brought me in with her when I was hangry and upset my usual taco place wasn't open... She mostly just wanted to stuff tacos in my mouth so I would quit my complaining.
