Big Disappointment...we went to Blue Fez on the referral of a friend. We went on a quiet late afternoon, upon their opening the place and it was dirty...food on seating, hopeful food would wow us. I ordered, as did my dining mates apps, and $34 entrees. Our fried zucchini was not at all the Moroccan fried zucchini I have tasted before. It was soggy, texture awful, seemed wet and not crisp at all......my entree had ropy tough chicken. Bottom line, when I informed our waitress that my meal was not good, chicken gamy ropy...she became rude and disappeared FOREVER. She then never asked what would resolve the issue but told me that the chef had decided to cook more chicken for me...no thanks. I told her no....any decent chef knew this chicken was awful first go round...I told her I wanted it off the bill ( I never ate mind you) and she then disappeared FOREVER again...nuf said, not clean, lousy service, food bad...bad response to a valid customer issue. I should've just sent it back, but I figured I'd tough it out, assuming the following courses would be better. Unfortunately, they were not. The bastilla was at least warm and crispy on the outside - parts of the chicken inside felt nearly frozen. It was also very small... given its quality this was perhaps a good thing! That said, it absolutely didn't seem worth $16. The Moroccan Tagine managed to be both bland and too salty at once. (The dried prunes, figs, and apricots were nearly inedibly salty and sour, while the lamb was bland. The taste overall was unpleasant.) In general, I love Moroccan food. The restaurant was clean, and the waitress was lovely and attentive. I don't mind lacking service, though, if the food is excellent. We happened to find ourselves in this restaurant without planning ahead. What a great find! Moroccan/Middle East/ Mediterranean ... I felt they represented all of those cuisines extremely well on their menu. I started with the lentil soup, good.. could have used a touch more seasoning. Also had the Marrakech Salad, beet/chic pea/feta salad which was fantastic - a great combination, clean flavors, simple - embracing the idea of let the ingredients do the talking. Onion garnish was cut way too thick, happened to get the very end of the onion with the core still present.Also used Spanish onion not red as menu states and could have used a greater punch of fresh herbs, but other than that I enjoyed it. My wife had the Mosaic Plate, also very good. Loved the eggplant, houmus, beets, carrots, etc... grape leaves were served warm and would have been better with a avgolemono sauce. Our server Danielle, was amazing as she floated through the dining room as if on skates attending to every table. My husband and I were looking for somewhere that had good Dolmades and stumbled across the Blue Fez. When we arrived we were sat immediately with very quick and friendly service. The resteraunt was almost empty, which was a bit strange to me, but I grew up in a busy tourist town, so I figured it wasn't anything. The one-star google reviews scared me a little bit, but we decided to keep on and order our food. It was very good. The dolmades were delicious. The salad was amazing, as well as the oyster entree that my husband ordered. The outside seating was beautiful and well lit. If we are in the area again, we will be back for sure. read more

This place was splendid. Whenever I see the lamb shank on the menu, I always order the lamb shank! This was flavorful, tender and paired nicely with the apricots and figs. To be honest I don't like fruit with my meat too much but it was tasty and it was even BETTER as left over!! The meat marinated in the sauce more and became even more tender. Unfortunately we don't have any photos of the food to share because we were so excited to eat! We ordered the couscous with chicken which was light and flavorful. It was perfectly charred and tender. We also split the hummus and falafel plate which were both appetizers. Oh my god, the falafel! So good. Definitely order this when you go. Herbaceous, crunchy, and flavorful... I could go on all day. I wish I had 10 more to eat. The hummus also was fresh and paired wonderfully with everything we ate. Drinks were also well prepared and unique. On a hot day in Salem, the Moroccan Lover Martini and Blue Fez Martini were refreshing. We sat outside and the service was just as good as the food. Our dinner order was as not as described as the website yet he wanted to say the order site was wrong, and that's not their fault. He was argumentative and then when I asked for a refund he told me to drive back and return the food to get one. After I said that's not going to happen he said he would give me a refund then continued to argue and then in the background thinking he had me on hold, said "what a f*cking cunt." When he came back on the line I asked him the name of his boss and he just kept talking over me ignored me and then hung up. DISGUSTING treatment of customers, women in particular. Great place to try in Salem! This was our first time trying Moroccan food so we didn't know what to get but our waitress was very helpful and she kept on checking on us to make sure we are doing ok. I came here twice in one week, hence all the food pics! All of the dishes were impeccable from presentation to flavour. Duck: succulent with sauteed mushrooms. Lamb: soft and savory no matter the pairing. Salmon: juicy with a nice broil on the outside. Veggie Appetizer: very fresh hommous, grilled babaganoush and bread. The dessert trio was the perfect ending. It's worth mentioning that it has recently opened and I hope some of these items stay on the menu. That being said, I'm also excited to see future creations. I was blown away by how good the food was. I ordered the chicken fassi (chicken with apricots and mushrooms in a sherry sauce) with couscous, my husband had duck with plums & figs and my friend had the roast chicken with mashed potatoes. Each dish had so many layers of flavor! I've never had Moroccan food before but I'm really looking forward to eating there again and trying some of their other items. The menu is very diverse. It offers gluten-free options, vegetarian choices and even American style foods such as a cheeseburger and french fries. The staff was exceptionally nice. We went to Blue Fez for restaurant week and were excited to try it out as Massachusetts is lacking in Moroccan restaurants. The food was delicious. Starting the meal with bread with dipping oil (we've never had a bread like this before and asked for seconds which they happily gave) and soup which was delicious. I had the salmon with brussel sprouts- everything was cooked perfectly and was seasoned well. My husband had the beef tagine which fell apart with a fork. We are looking forward to coming back to explore the menu more. The service was friendly but slightly lacking however; it was busy due to restaurant week. read more

The food was disgusting and far from fresh. The couscous was watery with a half-filled bone, and the tagine was just as bad: watery with a tasteless, boiled piece of chicken. It was inedible. When we complained, the waitress admitted it was her second day and had no idea what the food should look or taste like. We paid out of pity for the staff and bolted. I honestly don't understand how people are not lining up to eat a meal here or have take-out. My wife and I visited yesterday. The space is immaculate and it is beautifully and elegantly decorated, though you don't need to be dressed up to eat there. The staff is courteous, professional and attentive. We started with the Cigar Sampler. Three different stuffed Philo bread cigars, one better than the next. I had their Moroccan Lover martini, which was wonderful too. For dinner, I chose the Sultan's Meshui. It was an outstanding combination of chicken and lamb over couscous, perfectly cooked. I asked for some extra harissa, which they happily brought over. My wife had the Moraccan tangine, which was a giant piece of lamb on the bone. The waiter highly recommended eat, and it didn't disappoint. The servings were quite large, so the leftovers were dinner tonight. And since I had asked for extra harissa, they gave me additional harissa to go, without my asking. Don't miss Blue Fez! read more

Great restaurant in a good location. The food is delicious and I enjoyed my dinner there but I was disappointed in a few things. A few things that need to be addressed: 1) Stop using Israeli couscous instead of Moroccan couscous. It does not matter if it takes less time, this is a Moroccan restaurant. I was in Morocco a few months ago and was salivating for that juicy vegetable filled couscous underneath my lamb shank. Welp, it came out with Israeli couscous pearls, not Moroccan in flavor profile and did not catch the flavor of the tagine dish. It was almost $30 and 1/2 the Moroccan dish was not there, upsetting. 2) Play Moroccan music (not country and what not) 3)Embrace the culture and let the restaurant become experiential versus generic. read more

Lack of help was the issue maybe last night. It really is a shame to walk around and these businesses are competing with the government and their hand outs. Having lived in the Middle East for many years was disappointed with the quality of the food. Service was great and the young man did a wonderful job considering they were short of help. We had a sample plater which was great and bread and oil was the best!!!! But the main course was a big disappointment as the chicken and lamb was dry and over cooked. Also was not much flavor. I really was disappointed in this as the all the reviews and comments were very positive and was very much looking forward to eating here. I will give it another try and maybe it was just a bad night for the establishment. We did eat outside and did walking around the inside which was very nice. We have been interested in the Blue Fez since we first stumbled upon it during one of our walks through downtown. We stopped by yesterday, which happen to be its grand opening. I had the House Salad and the Falafel served over humous and spicy harissa sauce, and my wife had the Cigar Sampler (spinach and feta cheese, brie cheese and honey, beef and raisins, wrapped in filo dough). The falafel is the best I've had in Salem - and I tried a few places. My wife, who is a very picky eater, loved the sampler. We ate outside so I can't comment on the atmosphere inside, but if seemed very pleasant and inviting. I have been a vegetarian for my entire adult life (more than 40 years). My wife is an omnivore. The Blue Fez is a perfect new place for us. We both love well-made, inventive food that is flavorful and simple in its presentation. We definitely think we found what may become our favorite restaurant in our little city. We look forward to trying more of the items on their menu. With the exception of Passage to India and one or two Italian restaurants, Salem's restaurants mostly specialize in seafood and American cuisine. There's nothing wrong with that, but it's nice to have another kind of regional food in the city, too. I went to Blue Fez for lunch today and had the lamb bowl, which contained lettuce, marinated carrots and beets, hummus, eggplant and a single cornichon. It was lightly dressed and was at once both filling and light. We also had a side of tea, which was elegantly served on a tray in glasses. The food was reasonably priced and the service was excellent. Recommend! read more

When Blue Fez first opened, I took a look at the menu and couldn't wait to try it. I started my own business around the same time and suddenly all my downtime was consumed and dining out became a thing of the past. With new pandemic hours, I found myself having a free night and couldn't wait to support a local restaurant in these hurting times. The experience was perfection. Pedro was my waiter and he was friendly, informative, detailed, and fast. Exceptional training on the menu. The food came out in perfectly timed courses (appetizer, small dishes and dessert). Each plate was spectacular as was the house sangria and fig/date dessert. I kept thinking, "Why did I wait this long!" I know why, but I will not let that much time pass again. In fact, I'm already thinking of who I can bring back next week - the list is long of folk that I think are going to LOVE this place. Blue Fez, you MUST weather this storm.
