    Rubbery with the ammonia smell...gross

It was a big mistake ordering from here. I should have ordered from my usual sushi place. Just didn't feel like driving so far. Laziness is BAD lol Fish here ain't fresh. The salmon sashimi was ok but the yellowtail was extremely disgusting. It had a rubbery taste and smelled pretty bad. Just staring at the photo I took disgust me. I actually never had a bad experience with sushi. Maybe customer service at a sushi place but not the fish itself. I am just hoping that me and my nephew won't get food poison from it. Never again.

When it comes to sushi, it's all about that fish to rice ratio. This place gives you more fish than rice, look at the pictures! Stellar. I also like that the menu here is straight forward. I'm not here to order another "xoxo roll" or "ninja roll" but Spicy Tuna Salmon Roll [$12.5] -- Yes, excellent spicy tuna flavored perfectly with fresh salmon on top. Especially enjoyed the salmon. Shrimp Tempura Roll + added tuna sashimi [total $18] -- I went on extra here adding tuna, but it was a good shrimp tempura and tuna sashimi. It was really nice for the chef to make this request work and presented it well. Please consider adding any tempura + fish on top roll to the menu! The place is very small, so it makes a good togo place. The sushi chef makes your orders right in front -- I saw him making my rolls directly -- so it gave me a very transparent, clean, and fresh impression. 5 stars + Fish is fresh, rolls taste good + More fish than rice! + Easy phone order and pick up + Nice street in south pasadena + Good value, would order again

    Cucumber roll and avocado roll.

Small cozy place with a kind and knowledgeable owner. There's not much in the vegetarian section, although everything turned out quite tasty. I'd skip the cucumber next time and load up on more avocado or asparagus. Both were absolutely delicious! Prices were reasonable, the service was quick, and the location is conveniently next to the L Line!

Paired with the thin slices of lemon, it gave every bite a bright, refreshing finish that made it hard to stop eating. The rice held together perfectly without overpowering the fish, which is exactly what you want from a great sushi roll. The second roll was just as impressive. The fish inside was incredibly fresh with a clean, rich flavor, and the balance of rice to filling was spot on. Too many sushi spots load up on rice, but this one lets the quality of the seafood be the star. Every piece tasted like it was prepared with care, and the freshness really shines through. This is the type of sushi spot that reminds you why simple, high-quality ingredients are all you need. If you're someone who appreciates fresh fish and well-crafted rolls, this place deserves a visit. I already know I'll be back because there are still so many items on the menu I want to try. Restaurants that consistently serve sushi this fresh are hard to find, and this one definitely earned a spot on my go-to list.

The Mango Tango Roll was absolutely the best! I wish I could say the same for the Blue Ocean Roll, but the Rainbow Roll was good as was the Sunomono Roll, and we split everything with another couple. They had a deal of buy 3 rolls get 1 free. Sergio was a good server once the food was ready as the restaurant was pretty crowded and we probably took to long to order. We all said we'd definitely come back here if our group wanted sushi.

I had planned to be phone-free for the hour, but curiosity bested me and I whipped out my phone for a scan. The bulgogi with rice and miso called to me, strangely, considering the heat outside. The atmosphere at this slow hour was so nice I almost wished it was raining. A few Clairo and The Marías songs later (at the perfect volume--audible, but still low enough to have a quiet chat) my miso soup arrived. Now, it's been a good few years since I've had miso soup, and I've never really been crazy about it, but this... this was some damn good soup. Liquid umami. Then the bulgogi and rice came. This is the best bulgogi I've ever had. So tender. Quite literally melted in my mouth. Punches of savory juice, tender fatty bits, golden brown perfectly caramelized onions, and a sweetness to bring it all together. Every bite was perfect. It washed over me and my shoulders and spine practically uncoiled themselves. I want to try more from the menu but... I'm... I'm going to need this again. Like tomorrow. I should say, especially for the price, this is a lot o' grub. A perfect filling portion, especially with the rice and soup. I had a smoothie a couple hours earlier so I really should've asked for a to-go box 80% of the way through... but I was just having too much fun stuffing my face to stop. To recap--lovely service, great music, and food to live for. And a restroom. It's not public, but they do have a restroom. Thank god for that restroom. I was hungry, yes, but more than anything I really needed that restroom.

My friend and I shared the following dishes: -Carlos Jewel Box: My favorite dish here. I just loved the variety. Sashimi and fried seafood on a bed of fluffy and seasoned rice. Also a nice umami kick from the ikura. The sashimi was tasty and standard, but I really enjoyed the fried seafood bites. The tempura batter was great and the seafood was nice and plump. -Tendon Combo with Cold Udon: Same notes for the tempura here, the batter was great and the tempura here is on another level. I also liked the half boiled egg and breaking the yolk into the rice, so delicious! The cold udon dipping noodles were also tasty and refreshing. Great for hot weather. I enjoyed the texture of the noodles. The value of each set was pretty good for what it was and the food was good quality. This restaurant is located in a cute alleyway with good outdoor ambiance. I enjoyed dining outdoors. The service here was great and the servers were kind. There's usually a wait to eat here. Still very delicious though and was no wait for 6 of us for lunch on a Thursday! The cold soba was also a good compliment to the small tempura rice bowl. Overall pretty solid, though not sure if I would come here ONLY for the tempura. I heard the original location is amazing, but having this here in Pasadena and closer by is awesome too! They didn't have enough room for our party inside so we did have to sit outside which wasn't great in the warm weather. I'm glad I got to try it, as I've been waiting for months for the opportunity- as I also consider myself a lover of tempura and deep fried foods- but this didn't wow me as much as hoped a tempura place would. Maybe their batter isn't something I'm 100% into, and maybe hype played into it, but I'm not 100 % on the Carlos train yet. Maybe another visit or two will even those odds! *note: There is validated parking in the back for the first 60 minutes for Carlos Jr.

The karaage had a solid fry, and wasn't greasy at all while being both crunchy and juicy. The sauce was a creamy and spicy and paired well with the chicken. The tonkotsu ramen was delicious although a bit on the sweeter side - the egg was very well marinated and the chashu generous and flavorful. - Tokyo set with tuna don (5/5): Also came with soba noodles, miso soup, and tsukemono. The tuna don had a generous portion of tuna and rice. It tasted fresh and was a simple and well executed dish that satisfies your cravings. The soba noodles were a surprise to me. I didn't expect the soba noodles to be in a sauce with a string sesame oil consistency and taste. It was refreshing yet a bit heavier as a result. I also love the variety of fish provided with it. Overall (5/5): Disclaimer - we came here late April. But this is a gem in Pasadena that we wished we visited sooner! The lunch deals have very generous portions for the price and we were super stuffed after. We also were quite impressed with the execution of the tsukemono which looked like canned vegetables mixed with mushrooms that were pickled together for an unexpectedly rich flavor. The vibes of the establishment are modern and tasteful, and we really liked how spacious it was. Service was also solid. Overall we hope to be back to further explore the menu!

We ordered multiple nigiris, rolls, and appetizers for our table. The servers and staff seemed to not communicate with each other, leading to slow and sloppy service. The nigiris came out much later than the rolls and the bowls, to the point where half of our party was done eating before the first nigiri plate came out. In fact, the service was so slow that the servers started to clear our plates while we were waiting for them to bring out our food The servers were awkwardly clashing plates at our table and being difficult about refilling the water and tea. After dropping $800+ as a table, we were waiting on one last nigiri (Yellowtail Belly) to come out. We asked our waiter to check on it for us, and he came back to us saying it should have been on the plate that had the other Yellowtail Nigiri on it. The reason why we brought this up in the first place is because the two didn't come out together. He then brings another waitress who tells us it should have come out already, and then another who tells us completely different information (i.e. it came out with different fish). Overall an unpleasant experience. Would not be back again nor would I recommend this place to anyone, especially since they made such a big deal out of $10 nigiri on a $800 bill.
