I paid almost $40 to have a pair of $250 jeans hemmed here with the original hem, specifically because this place is supposed to specialize in jeans. Unfortunately, after just one wash, the hem is already bunched up and coming apart on the inside. The workmanship is terrible, especially for what they charge. I expected a professional, clean, durable alteration, and instead the jeans will now need to be redone. Very disappointing and completely unacceptable for a shop that promotes itself as an expert in denim. read more

I brought 3 pairs of levis jeans to this place, 1 was hemmed too short and the other 2 pairs were hemmed uneven. One side is longer than the other. This employer (Tony) pays their workers "by the piece" and not hourly. According to the Garment Workers Protection Act, this is not a suitable form of payment in California, and it is Illegal. This employer also has bad working conditions in which include no Air Conditioner, No Lunch time, and an unlockable bathroom for their employees. Essentially this business is practicing exploitive behavior towards their workers. I went ahead and spoke to Tony about paying my mom (a 56 year old Latina) and his reaction was to argue and hang up on me over the phone. I've been with the good doctor, Tony, for about 20 years. Unfortunately, I have one of those body shapes that makes it so that nothing off the rack fits correctly. As a result, virtually all of my non-workout/active clothing is either bespoke or made to measure. To my knowledge, having jeans made isn't really possible, in any practical sense, so I take 100% of my denim to Tony. Besides garden variety alterations, Tony has done some incredible things for me and I will speak to just a couple of them here. When I lived in NY, I wore through the crotch section of my favorite dark-wash indigo Italian designer (needlessly expensive and so not easy to part with) jeans. The fabric just disintegrated in the crotch. I sent Tony pictures, and then mailed him the jeans. I'm not a cutter or tailor so I don't know the proper terminology, but Tony took those jeans and weaved new denim into the fabric. He didn't patch them; he literally got into the weave of the fabric and made new denim in the worn through areas, making them wearable again. This was 13 years ago and I still have the jeans, which are in impeccable condition. Another job Tony did for me (multiple times after I learned he could do this) involved fixing a hem. As discussed above, I need to have everything altered for length, which is challenging when you are hemming anything but raw denim, because a pair of jeans with any sort of wash at all is going to have distressing on the hem which would be lost with a normal/simple hem. As a result, one is compelled to take the original hem and reattach it. Tailors have different approaches in how they deal with original hems and I learned the hard way that not all approaches are equal in quality. Before I met Tony, I had another expensive pairs of jeans hemmed by someone else with instructions to maintain the original hem. Unfortunately, the hem disintegrated and I walked on it, under the heel of a dress shoe, on consecutive rainy nights while on a trip. By the time I came back, the hem was absolutely destroyed, and thus so were the jeans. I took these jeans to Tony to see if there's any possibility of salvaging them. Again, I don't know the terminology or exactly how he did this, but he basically took denim of a similar weight and color, distressed it, created an "original hem" for my jeans and reattach them somehow to these absolutely disintegrated pant legs. You couldn't tell anything had happened to the jeans when he gave them back to me. When he gave the jeans back, they were in better condition than when I picked them up from the the first tailor-- with the tags still on them--that did the original hem job. I didn't even know you could do that shit. My philosophy on this is that if you're paying $500 and up for jeans the prudent move is to invest in a craftsmen that's an expert in jeans and just works on jeans every day. I don't live in California anymore, but I still take all of my denim to Tony, he's the absolute best and the thought of him retiring one day bums me out. read more

I've brought a few pieces of clothes in here. The first time the jeans were too short and he wanted to charge me again to let the hem down more. he said it was my fault they were too short as I could see the length of them in the mirror. However he marks the jeans above where they're hanging. So not really sure what happened there. This last time I went in I brought three items. A shampoo cape that had a small 2 inch tear on the seam that needed to be stitched back up. A vintage T-shirt torn under the armpits and a tear across the chest. And pair of Levi's that had a ripped button hole that needed to be stitched up. He charged me $60 bucks. Way overpriced for that. But worst of all after I washed the shirt his work fell apart. I brought it back along with a pair of pants for him to hem. I asked him if he could stitch the shirt back up for me. But when He pulled out his little ticket book I asked if he was going to charge me again. He said of course. I explained I just picked that shirt up from him less than a week ago and reminded him how much I paid. He said this isn't my work. I've never seen this shirt before. His memory must be going because when I first brought it in he was impressed and said this is an oldie but goodie. But now he goes on to say the shirt can't be repaired it's going to fall apart again I should throw it away. Well Gee why didn't he tell me that to begin with before he fixed it the first time and why was he just about to fix it again if I was going to pay again? Anyway he refused to re stitch the shirt. That was a complete waste of money. Now I have to take it someplace else. read more

It's true, everything everyone said is spot on about Dr Blue Jeanns. I just didn't expect to step back in time when I walked inside! Nobody really prepared me for the flashback to my childhood when I stepped inside. Pictures of famous customers adorn the walls, TV is up REALLY loud and the place is old school... owner is old school... workers are old school. Nothing new and fancy about it, which is part of what makes it so dang awesome. Good old fashioned denim repair. Nothing more, nothing less. Expect around $25/pair for hole repairs. We gave him four pair of jeans paid $100 and got them back in three days time. Seriously, good as new. I can't even tell where the giant hole in the crotch was in all the pants! I have told everyone about this place and hopefully this review convinces one or two more to check them out. Worth the drive to the valley, worth the time, worth every penny! Get it done right and save those favorite jeans of yours! It isn't easy to find the pair you love and wear them in until they fit like a glove... Probably the best denim repair/alterations place in the valley! Took two pairs of rag &bone jeans to get shortened and have original hem put back on. Service was really good and the owner is very helpful. Got them back in two days and a professional job was done. My pair was so close to getting a hole so I stopped wearing them for a few months until I could find someone to fix them and voila! - Dr Blue jeans worked his magic. Finally, I was able to find a Tailor that handles jeans properly! It is very important that my jeans stack a certain way on my sneakers. I needed a tailor that pulls off a proper tapering that is tight at the bottom, does not constrain my calves, and the new stitching matches to the original stitching. Tony at Dr. Blue Jeanns fit my criteria properly. I have brought in two jeans (each worth $200) in for tapering and they fit exactly how I wanted. Tony was patient and took to account all my adjustments I wanted. The prices are average in comparison to the other tailors in the area. You can pay card or cash, which is nice to have that option. After multiple attempts at getting my jeans tapering and finding some kind of issue, the people at Dr. Blue Jeanns were able to perform the proper tapering. Terrible tailor. Quoted me one price and then raised the price when he saw the brand of the jeans. He justified this by saying they were "fancy" jeans. I asked to keep the original hem and he charged me extra for that but I expected that. What I didn't expect was to pick up my jeans and find out my "fancy" jeans were hemmed too short and he DIDN'T keep the original hem. When I asked about the ordinal hem he went to the back to look for the cuttings but seemed super annoyed with me. When I pressed him for why I was charged for the original hem but he keep them he said he followed what he had scribbled down on the paper...and that was his own writing sooooo basically I have to throw out my "fancy" jeans because this guy can't read his own hand writing. read more

Go see Tony! Yup, if you need your favorite pair of jeans repaired or if you just bought a new pair and you need then hemmed or altered in any way, Tony is the one to see. Dr. Blue Jeanns himself has been altering, hemming, repairing and patching jeans for close to 2 decades now. I think it's 2 decades...I might be off...no matter. He's the only one I take my jeans to. Why? Because he fucking rocks. I believe he is the first one in the LA area, now don't hold me to this, that started the whole "keep the original hem in tact" hem...or the "fussy" hem as he likes to call it.. Meaning, he will hem the jeans but keep that the original hem. Not sure how he does it, but that's his specialty. I've never been disappointed in any jeans I've taken there. He charges $10.00 for a regular hem and $20.00 for the "original hem" intact hem. Is he overpriced? I don't believe so. He specializes in jeans, so he has the right thread color for whatever you bring him and he has loads and loads of jean material...new stock and dead stock. If you comapre him to the infamous Denim Doctors on 3rd Street in LA, you'll see what a deal he is...considering Denim Doctors rehemming STARTS at $18.00, while their hole mending starts at $15.00 and their custom tailoring starts at $30.00. As far as turn-a-round time goes, there is absolutely no comparison. I brough in 2 pairs of jeans on a Thursday and Tony told me they'd be ready on the following Tuesday. Denim Doctors, I've heard, sometimes holds jeans for weeks at a time. Anyways... Parking is always available and convenient...and if you're hungry you can grab a bite to eat at In N Out, which is right next door... I am so glad that I stopped by this place today. I drove about 80 miles from Bakersfield to get to this place because I wanted to find someone that specialized in altering jeans. I brought 3 pairs of raw denim (Rogue Territory SK, Rogue Territory Slub SK, and 3sixteen ST-44x) all of which needed work on the waist, crotch, and length. Lori was amazing at tailoring all of my jeans to fit me perfectly. The best part was that she finished all of the work within an hour and I was able to take my jeans home because I was heading to San Diego. I met the owner, Tony and he was a super chill guy. Lori worked with me to fix my jeans and she was very friendly. She did an excellent job! The quality of the work was outstanding, my jeans fit on like a snug glove. I think that the price is fair compared to the quality of work done. I will definitely take my next pair of jeans to this place. I've tried Schaeffers Garment Hotel (The Denim Repair Shop) prior to this experience and my jeans were mutilated. They charged me $100 to fix the waist and the crotch inseam. However, they sent me back my pair without any alterations made to it. I messaged the owner, Robert and he tried to act like a macho man, acting totally disrespectful and inappropriate. I will never take my jeans anywhere else, I buy jeans at the flea market and take them in to get them fit to my waist. And every time they turn out perfect and I never have to wear a belt with my jeans! I have also brought a pair of my favorite shorts that started to ripped in the leg and he was able to fix them with no problem!
