The Blue Moose is a great breakfast place in Port Townsend with a good menu and a quirky, fun atmosphere. The cafe is located right where you come in to the marina. The prices are good and the quality is great! I was here recently when I was home and I had the "Scooter" with black beans which was a baked tortilla filled with black beans and other southwest type fillings (salsa, sour cream, cheese, other goodness). It was only $4.50 or something ridiculous like that and I couldn't finish the whole thing! It was tasty. The coffee was good, too. Lots of locals in this joint. I'd recommend it to anyone! read more

Blue Moose and Sweet Laurette's are our two favorite breakfast places in PT. Others would include Hudson Point Cafe, but they haven't gotten me hooked yet. Come to Blue Moose if you want to experience the hearty breakfast fare that you'll see many of the local ship builders come in for, their orders known by face and packaged up in a way that is just enough to enjoy a few feet outside the door. The coffee is from Sunrise Roasters, also located in the shipyard and it's strong without being too acidic. The pancakes are the traditional fluffy variety and consistently delicious. We also love the corned beef hash and the veggie hash, loaded with fried eggs and red potatoes. Blue Moose isn't the place for local or organic food, go to Sweet Laurette's for that (and for a more refined offering in general). Here they elevate generic ingredients to a mouth watering level of satisfaction and the portions are, well, big enough to feed a little moose. This place grows on you each time you come. Your second time in you'll know to help yourself to a mug of coffee that's conveniently located by the entry. This makes the occasional wait outside pleasant. And if you're really in a rush, sit at the counter and watch the maestras work their magic at the stove. They cook and serve with love and it's a tight space so it's fun to watch. read more

We came here on a drizzly summer Sunday afternoon after reading all the great reviews this place received. We were very disappointed. We showed up in the middle of lunch rush and expected a wait, we gave our name and mentioned we'd need a table for two with a high chair (for our 20 month old). Then we went outside to wait in the rain, but it wasn't so bad considering we weren't dining at the uncovered table right outside the front door, actually in a parking stall. Wow, the food must really be good if it's worth eating out in the rain...we'll come back to that. We got called to be seated and before we could settle in, we were told we actually couldn't sit there because the high chair would be blocking the walkway, which it totally would have, but why seat us there in the first place? Whatever, no big deal, just kind of awkward being seated and then kicked back outside. Then a different server walked outside and brusquely told us our table was ready but made no move to take us to it. We walked in and waited for her to come in and take us to our table, but she didn't bother. We poked our head back out and asked if that one was our table. "Yeah, its the only one we got." she snapped. After we were reseated, we ordered a coffee, a water and an apple juice which came out promptly and before we were ready to order our food. Then we waited. We saw our server look at us a few times as she passed, but it took her a while to actually come take our food order. Then the proprietor finally came and took our order. About 20-25 minutes later the short haired girl who graciously showed us to our table came by and threw our food to us. Seriously, I am surprised no plates shattered as she dropped them on our table. My wife ordered pancakes, which are huge, but the little charmer hadn't brought any pancake accoutrements. To avoid enduring any further "service" from the angry young lady who was tasked with "serving" us, we hailed another server to ask for syrup and butter, and she went off to help. Then our server came back and slammed a pitcher of syrup on the table and said "Syrup." before walking off again without asking if we needed anything else. I got the biscuits and gravy and wouldn't recommend them, pancakes are alright, really big and thick, but nothing special, home fries were good, but again, nothing sexual, and the sausage was good. The beverages came in a mish mash of random cups and mugs, and the water had what looked like and oil slick floating on the surface. Then, out of nowhere, the surly server pops up at our table putting on an awkward show of forced geniality with our daughter, then asks if everything is alright. Not by a long shot. The food was mediocre, the service was probably the worst we have ever endured, but at least it was inexpensive. I really hope the proprietor checks on these reviews and gives that little tart a good talking to, there's no way that place can afford to lose customers, especially over something as simple as good customer service. read more

Quirky. Bizarre. Funky. Perfect. This is a place straight out of every Northwestern movie where interesting characters emerge one-by-one from the road to create a breakfast chorus and novelette. We ended up here via Yelp! as we were traveling through Port Townsend looking for breakfast. Our waitresses were attentive, personable and friendly and as it turns out the owner is a huge fan of New Orleans. Gotta like that. We ordered the corned beef hash and biscuit with gravy - the 'Non-Atkin's diet" special, I believe is what it's called. Hands down the best corned beef has I've every had. Normally, hash is salty and a semi-dog food experience. Not here! It was deliciously cubed into seared and warm beef chunks and hand-made potato pieces. Not dry at all, and served with love. Oh yeah, nothing like asking the locals where to eat and being pointed in the best direction. We would have never found this little joint if it weren't for the kind people at Undertown coffee. Our waitress, Jasmine, was super sweet and helpful. The iced tea was refreshing and the food was delicious. Dont let the drive through the shipyard deter you and make sure you're prepared for a wait. Once you're checked in with the very busy staff grab a cup of coffee made specially for the cafe in the building next store. Then take a walk through the shipyard and see the boathouses and wooden sail boats being restored down the way. Once you're called, you'll find yourself trying to pick between scrambles made with avocado with feta, the mardi gra omelet with ham, beans, and salsa, or from the specials dedicated to local artists or festivals that are all made fresh to order in the visible kitchen. The bacon is huge and the red potatoes are fantastic as well. One of the best breakfast's i've had ever. I hope one day enough people have come through that they can expand and hire a couple more people to help cause those girls were working hard! read more

I had an errand in Port Townsend, and the first place I tried to eat at was ... not there when I arrived at the address. So I went for Yelp's top-rated white people restaurant instead. (Apparently the city requires most of its restaurants to have "Cafe" in the name, so it would have been hard to choose if not for the stars.) When I arrived I was greeted by a friendly server and invited to sit wherever I wanted. She then informed me that the restaurant accepts only cash or checks. So I left. Nothing on the menu particularly appealed to me anyway, because, you know, white people food, but I would have stayed and spent my money, if for no other reason than I'd have liked to eat in the place where I had already sat down for lunch. If only they'd have let me use the payment method that essentially everyone in the modern world uses, or provided me with a portal to 1992, before I had a debit card, I might be able to review the food instead of just the payment policy. I know it's a huge hardship for a small business owner to get a free card swiper for your phone and take two or three minutes to link it to your bank account, but it seems like it would be worth it to make more money. The server did offer to let me eat my meal, then go find an ATM and come back with cash, but I was less than eager to accept her generous invitation to waste a bunch of time driving around PT and pay an ATM fee because my bank doesn't have a branch there. She mentioned that 'this happens all the time,' which would be a sign to me that I should accept credit cards like every other business on earth, but maybe I'm missing something. Hell, if it was really that important to do business in 'the old ways,' they could have offered an in-kind payment option and I'd probably have taken them up on it. I used to have a deal like that with a restaurant in my home town, in fact. So there's a precedent. I honestly didn't need another reason to hate Port Townsend. I'm a liberal Democrat, but come on ... How is it that the most liberal town on the Olympic Peninsula is also the whitest? If I was only writing this review for other people who live on the Peninsula, all I'd have I say is 'It's a cafe in Port Townsend,' and everyone would know exactly what I meant. I'm sure the food is fine, and the people were perfectly pleasant and friendly. I don't want to attack anyone personally, and if I thought this review would have a negative impact on the business I wouldn't write it. They just have a very very stupid stupid payment policy and they should change it so they can make more money. Worst case, I'd have paid ten or fifteen bucks to eat a mediocre sandwich. Best case, I'd have had the best meal of my life, changed my whole opinion of Port Townsend, and made a point of going back to the Blue Moose every time I was in the area for the rest of my life. Either way it seems like it would have been worth getting the damn card swiper. read more

Choose a cup and help yourself. They serve Sunrise Coffee, locally roasted literally right next door. I highly suggest giving yourself extra time after your meal to explore the shipyard. Boats from all over the west coast and Alaska haul-out in Boat Haven; walking among them a fun way to let your stomach settle. If you visit during the week, I have no doubt you'll see Port Townsend's shipwrights plying their traditional skills on these vessels. But honestly...okay when I say the food is "all right" I mean it's honestly kind of boring. Typical run-of-the-mill diner type of food. To be clear, it wasn't bad or disgusting or anything like that. I do not recommend this place at all. They are extremely rude and appear to be racist as well. My colored girlfriend and I (white) ordered takeout over the phone. Upon arrival we were greeted with dirty looks by a taller blonde lady. We got our food and my girlfriend asked about condiments and she was ignored. I repeated the question and got a snooty response. As I was paying, my girlfriend asked if their bathroom was opened for use (because of covid) which again got no response. We could tell they heard and chose to ignore her. I again repeated the question loudly and was given the snide response "someone is in it." We left the place quite uncomfortable and both felt really offended and unwelcome. Well, It seems like this place is a local spot, which is Ok, being that PT is a tourist city. My main issue is that they are cash only. I am guessing that they assume that they will actually be saving money by not having to pay the fee that the credit card companies charge them. They are incorrect. I have skipped there twice (50 bucks worth of business between two of us lost) because they don't take cards. The food was good, and I do love the interior of the place. The service was great, really fast and my food came out of the kitchen in no time at all. All the employees were very friendly with us. Parking was a bit of a problem(but I went on a Sunday AM, so that is to be expected). Once they start taking cards, I would change my review to 4 stars. read more

I've been to a dive bar, but never a dive breakfast place. What a lovely surprise! This tiny restaurant is situated right on the harbor, inbetween dozens of boats that are being worked on by carpenters, electricians, and others. One of the electricians (our friend's boyfriend) who works on boats nearby told us that their biscuits and gravy are the best in the area. You have a choice of either sweet potato or regular potato homefries, which I love. Some of their omelettes also feature local seafood. Terrific find for an early morning breakfast. As a vegan, breakfast places can be tricky; but Blue Moose had a veggie hash they happily made vegan for me. Staff are genuinely friendly. The place is small but that just lends itself to the friendly atmosphere. People in Port Townsend are really friendly! Blue Moose is located in the working dock area with boats everywhere. Very cool!
