I planned to give 4 stars, but the cooker ruined everything. No kidding. My family members and I were in the line for bowl of soups and Mongolian grill. I am Deaf, so one of my family members interpreted for me. I tried to order beef and noodles, but the cooker ignored us. My family member planned to order the bowl of soup, but he ignored and asked two customers behind us to order their food. My family member had to yell at him for ignored us; he laughed and acted like he does not care about his job. My family member decided to talk to the manager, but the cooker ran to the manager and denied for his own action. They yelled and argued in front of customers, while they ate their food. It was a huge embarrassment to see people argue due to my deafness. The manager refunded us and allowed us to eat our food for free. I do not plan to come back to this place until this cooker leaves or so. I seriously do not want to see his face due to deaf and disability discrimination. read more

Too many negative comments and reviews! Here's one to buffer it. For some reason, I like going to Blue Pearl once a month. For about $12/meal is not bad. When I was on vacation last week, my family took me to a Chinese place called "VIP something"(?) in San Diego. Trust me, food here (Blue Pearl) is much better and the selection is more varied. I was wondering why my mom liked "VIP(?)" so much? Admittedly, it's not the best Chinese buffet I've been to (The best I've been to was a Chinese buffet in San Antonio, Texas! I forgot the name). But, Blue Pearl will suffice for now. Everytime I go to this place, I see different types of people, but mostly, families. At one time, I saw about 25 children in the same orange uniform. I was guessing they're on a field trip of some sort. That was quite interesting to see. I never see this place unfilled (can't say empty). I guess most (if not all) like Chinese buffets. When you go there, all races are represented. It would probably be a good study to determine ethnic-group demographics of this establishment. This place is noisy as all get out. Don't come here if you're hoping for a quiet dinner with your family or friends. Families that believe that restaurants are appropriate places to bring their infants love to come here (hint: hire a babysitter, and if you can't afford one, you'd be better off fixing a meal at home). The amount of crying children really distorted my experience here. Not that the restaurant owners have anything to do with that, but I'm still putting it out there. The food is so-so. The servers are usually found chitchatting when they should be at least be taking the used plates off of tables. The food selection is not that great and everything taste like it's been out for several hours. If you love a buffet, DC Yelpers, you gotta try this one. I detest buffet anything, but my mother had been spending every afternoon for a week at this place, bringing me mochi balls and egg custard desserts, delighted at the sheer joy that 150 daily items can deliver. Blue Pearl is in the City Place, Silver Spring, basement/food court and has a little panda fellow with a sign at the corner of Ellsworth, across from the AMC or Majestic Theaters. The panda, it turns out, is friendly and the price even friendlier, $6.99 for lunch and $10.95 for dinner!! So think about it, 150 dishes by about $10, that's $0.07 per dish. YEEESSSSSSSS. Now, Chinese food (see earlier post) is pretty cheap as it is, and this operation I am convinced is a front for a slew of illegal activities bec/ there's NO WAY the owners can make money. The cooks and wait staff must also be smoking something bec/ the ones out front are moderately cheery and helpful. Maybe being surrounded by enormous piles of food does that to a person, but who knows? There are a number of stations: Chinese, sushi, Vietnamese noodle bar, grilled anything (beef, chicken, bulgogi) with fries/yuca, dim sum, soup, salad & dessert, and comfort food (mac and cheese, pizza). Here's a short run down on some of the stuff I sampled: - crispy duck - better than at MANY Chinese restaurants, make no mistake; dad went for 4 helpings - salt & pepper shrimp - perfect, crispy and just spicy enough to eat everything except the head and tail (the way it should be) - green beans - don't pass on this one, it's delicious and not over/under cooked - stuffed jalapeno peppers - it depended on which pepper you got, but mine was tasty and tolerable; mom nearly had a heart attack with one bite of her morsel OK, they have everything, some of which is out of this world, and a lot of which is mushy, over-sauced, over-grilled, or not stewed long enough. But for variety and novelty and no-holds-barred in-your-face lots of food, this is your buffet. They have a few great items that have convinced me to convert the heathens. Go. And tip, these guys are pretty good. There's tons of kids, old couples, young couples, and people from every ethnic background. It's crazy in there, Just like the food. All these bad reviews are expecting something else, it's an all you can eat buffet for like $14 during lunch, there's chinese food, pho, sushi, pizza, mac n cheese, basically everything you could ever want. It's made in bulk so it's not the most amazing stuff you'll ever eat but it's a great place to come with a big group of friends and eat a ton of food for a couple hours. You have to treat Blue Pearl like thanksgiving, don't eat all day then come and feast on all sorts of foods that might not even really go together. I like the pineapple shrimp and the veggie sushi the most so I get like 4 plates of that, if that's not worth $14 idk what is.The red bean sesame balls are their best dessert, I always take one with me for the road. They give you endless soda, too. My one friend gets the pho and like an entire pound of crawfish every time we go, I KNOW he gets his money's worth. While they do get a little antsy if you stay too long (typical when it's AYCE) they don't really bother you and you can just have a good time in a big group. There were like 3 different sections (if I remember correctly, it was seafood & Chinese food, soups and desserts, then American food and salads) the sections had plates on each end, and there's only one side to get food from, so people were starting and both ends, and bumping into each other in the middle, which leads me to another rant, the people! I have never visited a buffet, or any place for that matter, with so many rude people! I hate to blame a restaurant for its customers, but these people were completely rude and had no manners! I realize there's plates on each end, but if we're both walking towards each other, you could say excuse me instead of shoving your way past and giving rude looks. Another guy was leaning against the counter waiting for something to be refilled and refused to move so that I could get shrimp, so I had to reach over him. And while my sister was getting vegetables, instead of waiting for her to be done, some rude woman grabs the spoon from the fish, and digs into the vegetables. This is one of those places you wish you could give zero stars to. I went during lunch around 2, wasn't very busy but like others said there were many loud crying children. After I sat down and started eating I watched two unoccupied severs walk past without speaking/greeting before deciding I'd have to go get my own drink. When I was scooping the ice another server who was clearly annoyed came to telling me she'd get it. I said well I've already gotten it so she told me next time ask her. Ok, that's fine no problem. The rest of the time there went wonderful as well. Again NO ONE came over to clear my table. Plates were sitting for quite some time before a server decided to clear them off. Again this place was NOT busy at all. THEN came time for me to ask for a refill. I politely stop a server and ask her if she could get me a refill, to which she was completely disgusted. She didnt even actually answer me, she turned her back after she finished listening to me to finish setting an empty table, took my glass, then walked over to the other side of the restaurant to pick up dirty dishes from some one else's table with my glass in her hand and then decided to go to the back and get a refill. I didnt even drink the refill. I was afraid she'd spit or done something to it from the way she was acting. I mean honestly she looked at me like how dare I ask her for a refill. So finally after my mouth was dry from not drinking the tainted refill I go back to the previous annoyed server and ask her for a refill like she said to.....OF COURSE she decided to argue with me...I just decided to keep repeating "I need a new drink, there's something in my other cup" to which she also looked pissed off and actually started complaining to a cook that was just standing around while I was standing there....REALLY? Ok...So after I watched her fill a new cup with ice and fill it she handed it to me and swore at me under her breath in her own language...and I know that's what she did, there was no mistaking that. My friend and I went here on a whim because we just wanted to pig out. Going in we understood, as most do, that buffets generally aren't the place to look for artisanal cheese and burgers from responsibly raised cows, but this place was a joke. To get in you have to pay $14, which is fine considering it's a buffet, but right after paying, you realize that this is not your ordinary buffet. My friend and I did a once over and realized immediately that we had made a mistake. Everything just looked old and generally unappetizing. Considering that we had just paid, however, we gave it a shot. We started with the "Asian" section...if you can call an amalgam of meat covered in sauces, Asian. There was a lot to choose from, most of it looked dry or just generally disgusting, but that didn't take away from choices. To keep this post short I'll talk about two dishes, my friend and I tried everything but the sushi, which looked terrible. The first are the ribs, do yourself a favor and stay away from them. Second is the mayonnaise covered, deep fried shrimp with pineapple...at least that's what it looked like. It tasted like garbage and made my friend sick for 3 days. Stay away from that too. Overall, I think this place is an assault to the senses in every possible way, and I am amazed that it hasnt been closed down. I think one star is still a HIGH rating considering the less than poor service received tonight at the Blue Pearl Buffet & Grill in Silver Soring, MD. The ONLY good thing we experienced in customer service was upon entry at the main counter. The hostess greeted us with a smile and friendly demeanor. From there it was straight fire and brimstone. Out of the 3 waitreeses we encountered, the waitress who brought our silverware took 15 minutes after we got our food to bring our drinks. Though we gave our drink order prior to removing our coats. The cleanliness left MUCH to be desired of which only a renovation can fix. The cooks there tonight extended SOUP times by continually adding water after the soup had visibly developed a thick coating on the top, the salmon was soaking in oily water and overcooked, the crabs were overcooked and dry, the fish were frozen patties anyone could purchase out of a grocery store, and none of the cut fruit tasted worth anything and was warm. The 2and of three waitresses threw a fit when realizing a tip was not left by a patron, and we practically had to get our own napkins since this location does not provide dispensers at each table. The third waitress was PLAN RUDE, never smiled and brought us our 'thank you for coming' fortune cookies within the first hour of our arrival. The manager was well suited and even had to assist with getting drinks to patrons, though he walked and monitored employees IT failed to mitigate the less than poor service or improve on the mediocre food served today to paying customers. Tonight was not their best night. They could've definitely done better. The kitchen staff has done a much better job the various other times I've visited here and it tends to be a hit or miss depending on when you go. The quality of their food tonight was definitely a miss. It's a Sunday. Quality should be better, not worse during dinner hours on the weekends. When we came the line was huge and waiting out the door past the shops. It's a good price but I don't think it was worth it. I felt crowded and the place seemed dirty. Ok, first let me say, I went to the Blue Pearl Buffet in Springfield, VA. It sounds like they are affiliated from the reviews I read, but I could be wrong. If I am, I'll move my review or delete it. Yuck. Awful. Abysmal. My trip started with excitement as I noticed they had Maryland Blue Crabs on the buffet! For an $11 buffet this was amazing to me. After cracking open the crabs I realized why. They smelled awful. Obviously they were far from fresh and they were overcooked. My hands smelled like rotting seafood for the rest of the day just from touching them. I probably would have became ill if I had eaten any of it. Onto the other food. An asian buffet really just needs to have decent General Tso's and Lo Mein to get 3 stars from me. But they couldn't even get that right. The lo mein noodles were thick and mushy and the general tsos came in large clumps of overbreaded, undercooked gobs of greasy mushy fatty chicken. In Silver Spring, a foreign place to me, hungover, and starved, I parked my car downtown and set out to find food. As soon as I emerged from the gargage, I saw the sign for Blue Pearl and decided to give it a try as a Chinese buffet has alot of appeal in that situation. Being a buffet you know you're probably not getting the best food, but the variety is great and its a great hangover tonic. And at a place with a great kitchen and alot of crowd turnover , like Lucky 3 in Falls Church, the food can be pretty damn good. Pearl Buffet however, is not like that, at least on my visit (6PM on a Friday). Very sparse crowd. Chinese items, pseudo-sushi, pizza. A weird selection. A station of scary looking seafood dishes - actually, stuff I'd love to eat like fried octopus, whole flounders in spicy sauce, a few other intriguing items - but it all looked like it had been there since lunch. The pseudo-sushi looked abysmal. The BBQ meat station was actually tasty - the key here being that they were constantly cooking fresh food and ringing a bell when they put if out. Freshly cooked, their curry chicken skewers actually were tasty. The grilled teriyaki pork chops also. Crispy duck, not so crispy, but OK. Other than that, the egg foo yung was fine; everything else, pretty sad. Eggrolls greasy and burned tasting. Dumplings with wrappers the consistency of Naugahyde. Tasteless lo-mein. Etc. You could make a decent meal of the freshly cooked meats, and maybe its better at some other time when the food is fresh, but I wouldn't go back to try. read more

I've been once. I found the food to be just awful. No flavor whatsoever. Some of it was just inedible. I resigned myself to only eating the desserts--they too, were terrible. If you're going for lunch during the week, this is a pretty inexpensive option (all you can eat for like 8 bucks) with lots of variety. Like others have said, it's a buffet so the quality is not the best but there's lots to choose from including a grill that will make things for you on the spot. I agree with other posters - the salad bar isn't a salad bar at all. It's a metal pan with iceberg lettuce in it. That's about it. They definitely need to work on that. Went there last night and although it didn't seem to be the cleanest place, I thought the food was okay with a good variety of things to chose from...I was pleasantly surprised. The layout of the place makes it a little more difficult to move around because the tables are spaced close together with no hierarchy of circulation. We had not been here for many months. Located in the middle of City Place Mall in Silver Spring, MD, this place has been here for a few years and caters primary to the Latin community (and to me)! Today I was in the mood for their grilled ribs; okay other good stuff too. To my dismay, ribs were no where to be seen. But wait, after an hour they appeared and were better than I remembered. (Stay with me now). Saving the best of this Review for last: Years ago, I had asked them for melted butter for their large steamed Cherry-stone (I think they are) Clams and gotten some kind of yellow grease that was horrible; baa. Upon subsequent returns, the staff was so eager to please me that they would bring it to my table w/o me asking. So as not to be insulting to such gentle-people, I continued to decline the stuff but finally had to stop eating the clams altogether which stopped the butter-ish stuff. Today, after all these months, I casually asked the owner/hostess if they had melted butter. She remembered me, saying she was sorry but only had a poor margarine substitute. I thank her, said no thanks for the margarine, and sat down to lunch. Fifteen minutes later, a steaming hot bowl of real melted butter appeared on my table! To the clams I sprang, and enjoyed for the first time in over a year, my buttered clams! Upon leaving, I spoke with this owner to thank her. She just smiled (she does a good job of that too) and said that she had "waked next door" and purchased the butter for me! Come on, is that good service? hungry? got $12 to spare? walk past blue pearl buffet and go to sabroso across the street instead. stuck in a zombie apocalypse with no substanence? ok go to blue pearl. blue pearl is what restaurants become when owners become harden and cynical about humanity. it is not a restaurant per se, but rather a no frills enterprise with items that seem like food. red flag #1: you walk in the door and you pay first; the truest indication that this is cafetaria style buffet. red flag #2, the dinner buffet costs $12. the buffet items consist of standard take out chinese (general tsaos chicken, vegetable lo mein, fried rice), seafood items (clams, mussels in black bean sauce, fried rock crabs), a meat station (beef teriyaki, chicken satay, korean ribs), a sushi station, made to order pho, and various desserts. sounds good, yes? except the lo mein is so limp and saturated with oil that it sticks to your ribs with every swallow. the fried crabs were well seasoned, but they're so dried that barely any meat exist. my husband best described the buffet when he described the korean ribs: "all the components are there, but there's something very off." ok cut the snark. it is a good place to feed large families for very little. despite the lackluster food, the buffet is full to almost capacity on an early saturday night. the clientele is mainly immigrant families and much of the people seem to enjoy themselves. there's nothing wrong with that. i grew up with very little and a night at blue pearl would have been great back then. but now i have choices, and thus, i would not choose blue pearl again. read more
