I revisited Blue Star for brunch with my teenage kids after last dining there 21 years ago (i.e., before they were born). I have very positive memories of eating there half a dozen times in the early 2000s. This time around, the food was great, but the service was maddeningly inattentive. We were seated in a back room that was nearly empty when we first arrived but soon filled up with two other parties that started to be served with drinks before we were even approached by a server. I had to ask four times (twice to the host and twice to another server) over an extended period before anyone came to our table. I was served coffee with cream but no spoon. I was served toast without being offered jam, and then the jam took forever to arrive after I asked for it. The Personal Cinnamon Roll we shared was epic, much larger than I expected from the website photo. I'm glad we didn't take the "personal" literally :-) My daughter really enjoyed the New York Steak and Eggs. The steak was decidedly undercooked for her specified medium rare, but she didn't mind so why should I? My son likewise enjoyed the Classic Reuben. I often feel a tinge of envy when he orders a Reuben, and this occasion was no exception. I had the Eggs Monterey scramble, which really hit the spot. The side of sliced grilled potatoes was generous and incredibly delicious. I found the back room to be isolating and somewhat low energy. I got the chicken and waffles (don't sleep on the siracha maple syrup) and some fried potatoes that were both VERY good the waffle was crunchy and delicious and the chicken tenders were fairly solid, nothing mind blowing but good! This place reminds me of my younger party days. When you partied hard and went to sleep on the couch. Your hosts woke up late and tried to be hospitable by making breakfast for everyone. In their hungover state, the food was often barely eatable. And the ambience consisted of less than gracious hosts. Plus, the air was filled with the smell of stale beer. I have been here several times here. Most often my servers appear to struggle to take an order and serve food. Same for the cooks. You can get a great breakfast here some days. Other days, the food is awful. You can get wonderful service. Or, your server looks as if they would love to just go to sleep in one of the booths. Know you are taking a gamble on food and service. Almost guaranteed something will be wrong. I come here not particularly hungry. The nostalgia of the place, the difficulty of the staff and kitchen in serving customers is a definite experience. read more

I hadn't been here in almost 15 years, but last weekend we were planning to get breakfast down the street, but the line was too long, so we came here. I honestly forgot how amazing this place is, and now I'm annoyed at myself for not coming for so long. I had a scramble, which I'd never had before; it was amazing, and their biscuits are ridiculously good! My husband had the Reuben, and it may be one of the best I've tried. In short, this place is a gem, and the fact that it's still doing so well, and making delicious food at a reasonable price after all these years speaks volumes! We have been going to the Blue Star for over 20 years! It was one of our favorite breakfast places when we are in town. However, this last visit on December 2, we had a very poor experience. Their signature coffee was undrinkable and was sent back, two of us ordered dishes that had poached eggs that were way overcooked (as in hard boiled); we asked our server to replace the eggs with soft poached eggs and heard the server explaining to the kitchen how the eggs should be cooked. My daughter ordered the French Toast Combo which very crispy, which was advertised as light and fluffy. My other daughter dish got cold while waiting for the replacement eggs. My wife had an omelette with country potatoes - the omelette was fine but the potatoes were over cooked and tasteless. I had the cinnamon roll which was very good. We were very disappointed and not sure if we'll be back. read more

Cinnamon roll review only. I always find myself eating a cinnamon roll wishing there was more frosting. The big hunk of cinnamony doughy goodness at Blue Star did not have me yearning for more frosting though. This thing was drowning in frosting. Let's think through how/why this is the case. I was seated at the bar and to my left could see a bit of the kitchen. I saw a microwave heating up biscuits and assume my CR had a similar fate. This would make the bread (too) warm and the frosting (when poured on with a five gallon bucket) to melt off. I don't say this to disparage the fine experience I had, only to add context. I approached this cinnamon roll as any reasonable person would, outside in. Uncurling the outer rings and (literally) dipping them into the pool of frosting on the plate. It occurred to me after a few minutes, though, that the outer rings are effectively soaking in the frosting. I changed my tactics to cut into the roll pie-style. Not quite to the core - I'm still leaving the best part for last - but about 85% of the way in. For me, this unlocked what would have been a rather dry midsection of the roll to the waiting excess of frosting. The construction of the roll was 5/5. Size: absolutely 5/5. The amount of frosting, also 5/5 (with the aforementioned pie-styler cutting approach). However, the actual dough and cinnamon part left a tiny bit to be desired. I can't, in good conscious, lead the readers to believe the actual cinnamon part of this particular cinnamon roll was five stars. That sticky, gummy core just wasn't quite there for me. Today I got the Potatoes "Plus" only a couple potatoes were edible the rest could have been used as Wood Chips due to how over cooked they are. The bacon was bunt to a crisp and not crispy bacon burnt Charred crispy bacon... Yuck! On top of that my girlfriend got the California eggs Benedict with Rotten Avocados, wimpy Tomatoes, and a Hamburger bun for one half of her Eggs Benedict and the other half was an English muffin. So, I almost didn't come here because it had only 3 stars. But, based on reviews we jumped in. Art murals on side also enticed me. Food was so amazing. Had the Monterrey Scramble and it was one of best. Server was so pleasant. They were busy and it seemed they could use more help. But, that's the way it is these days and we just need to support. The only reason why i would give blue star 4 stars is because of the awful wait we had to endure for the food but we did go during brunch on a Sunday which is from 8am-3pm. Don't be discouraged because you can still order dinner menu items before 3pm! It didn't seem like there were that many people in the Cafe since we got seated within five minutes. But the kitchen just seemed so backed up. Our waitress only popped out of the kitchen every 15 min so it was hard to add on to the order to bring something like the cinnamon roll out. I ordered the cinnamon roll about 30 min after ordering the main breakfast dish because i was so hungry, i thought the cinnamon roll would just be easy to bring out - something to much on while we waited. It's my new favorite spot easily. I ordered the Rueben. Everything about it is bland. The meat is not corned beef, it's so bland and dry. The sauerkraut tastes like cabbage bathed in vinegar, not sauerkraut. There is a serious lack of cheese and sauce. Same rye bread I get at the store, cheap. Did not enjoy. Will not do again. So very dry. So little cheese. But mostly, SO VERY BLAND! read more

Horrible experience - ordered a large brunch order for my entire family for a birthday gathering. The food was mediocre and they didn't provide any Hollandaise for any of the 4 eggs Benedict orders. Then did not respond to calls. Wouldn't recommend this place - not worth it. As an update to the above review, they were thoughtful enough to apologize and refund the order. At the time, it still wasn't the greatest experience, but I appreciate that they refunded me and they cared enough about customer service to reach out to me and make things right. read more

I have been going to this restaurant on and off for many years, but just recently made a trip back here with my dad and we had breakfast for lunch. I am gluten free and have many other mild food allergies, so I ordered the breakfast potatoes with bacon and cheese. It was very reasonably priced at $10.99, and was the perfect amount of food. We could see our waitress running around trying to handle several tables--it took a while to get our order started and when we handed over our cards to pay it took a long time for her to get them back to us. Otherwise it's good for casual brunch--the food was good but nothing special. I had a buttermilk biscuit and found it a little dry and tasteless. So....I got there and had to wait 20 minutes (after I was told 5-10). It was not busy, at all, yet it was a mess. Then, I sat at my table. And waited and waited for a very long time. No one greeted me, as many walked by. I finally got someones attention and asked for my server... waited even more. Got the attention of someone else, who happened to be my server. She was about to leave to get me water, but I stopped her to give her my complete order (who knows how long I would have had to wait until ordering). The busser came and dropped off my coffee, but not the water. After, yet again, waiting more, I got his attention for some water. While, waiting for my food... The table next to me had been waiting for their food for an hour! One of the people at that table even had to get up and get the pitcher of water and served the tables around us.... still waiting for my food while everyone else was getting theirs. Finally got my food, after awhile. It was cold! The potatoes were warm, eggs and veggies were cold. Coffee was hot, but very watered down and expensive (tasteless). Coffee and water were never refilled (and they were needing to be refilled). Then, I gave my server my card after she dropped the check. Waited even longer for her, while she was talking to another table and their complaints and then proceeded to tell all the servers and bartender... before running my card. Wow... this was definitely an experience - not a good one! Thank goodness I am patient. Some people just walked away, at different stages of their time at this restaurant. I have come to Blue Star a few times... today was by far the worst service, lack of detail, lack of attention and lack of customer service! And, unfortunately, I was hoping to say that the food saved the day and experience... but, it definitely did not. It was cold, lacked seasoning and flavor (both in the food and coffee). read more

Whatever happened to Uncle Hoa? He had a great chicken dish with love and character on a long distant memory of a menu here at the Blue Star. I came here for trivia every Monday for the better part of a decade, and each year, after a certain point, the quality would decline noticeably. I've now come back a couple times for trivia after a several year hiatus, and I'm sad to report that at some point the food bottomed out and the service has to begin making the yearly quality sacrifice. Did Uncle Hoa leave and put a hex on the Blue Star for abandoning him and his namesake dish? I suspect so. Today, the food is boring in taste, preparation, and presentation. There's not much to write that you can't see or suspect from the deeply unenthusiastic menu. What's certain is that you will have ample time to contemplate this menu - don't expect a waiter to swing by for 20+ minutes. Once you have ordered, do then expect to let the anticipation build. As your hunger grows, you will ask yourself existential questions like "why didn't I just grab tacos at TNT?" Or "if I leave now, get slice from Pagliacci's, and come back; will I beat my order, and will they even notice?" read more

If I could leave less than 1 star I would. -Took 15 minutes for a waitress when there were 5 tables with people. -The food brought out didn't have all the ingredients that were listed on the menu. The waitress said they didn't have those ingredients. -No condiments given or asked to bring over. -Cold food. -Once the waitress dropped off the food we didn't see her again until we were done. -What's with the shot size glasses of water?? Food was just BAD. -When we told her the food was bad she said she would give a 25% discount but "she had to charge something". She' took 25% off one item, not the entire bill. Really?
