Came here for lunch with some friends. It's a small place so we waited for a few minutes to be seated. We ordered the shrimp tempura appetizer and it was not your typically shrimp tempura. As someone that likes the concept of sushi but not actual fish I always struggle to find sushi restaurants with good veggie options or at least options without the whole raw seafood thing. I ended up getting the Kobe beef gyoza which by themselves I would say they are 4 stars and a solid appetizer option. For the roll - I got the save the planet roll. The fillings were great, the only thing I will say is that it had a slight fishy undertone to it. Otherwise good though. I would give three stars solely for the fishy taste I got. Service was also great, everyone was super nice! Side note all the rolls they made in front of me (although full of fish) looked super good. read more

Best sushi spot in the area! The staff is very friendly, and food is served quickly. It is a small place, and almost reminds me of a restaurant in New York City. I was pleasantly surprised at the quality of the food and service at this mom and pop hole in the wall in Madison. I wasn't sure exactly what to expect but I was hopeful. And my hopes were realized. But I digress. The place was packed for the most part but we were seated very quickly since some people have just left but I can tell you that they have no shortage of customers. The sushi and sashimi were fresh and very tasty and what was most important without that freezer taste that a lot of places have, which means that the fish doesn't stay very long, which is also a mark of a good restaurant. From what we could tell the place is run by a family or 2 and they seem to run a very tight ship when it comes to service and quality of food but I think they could benefit from a little bit of originality or experimentation that some of the better places attempt, though I can see why a neighborhood place may give trade that in for quality of other aspects. Yum! Another new favorite place in Madison. My daughter and I ordered for appetizer the Pork Gyoza and the Pepper Tuna Avocado Salad. Our main dish was Yaki Soba for me and she had a combo sushi roll, which I don't remember the name nor did I taste. However, I loved my dish and she loved hers. Pretty good sushi but we were slightly underwhelmed after reading all the positive reviews as we were expecting something amazing. What we got was some sushi rolls that we loved and some that we just didn't care for. Maybe we just need to learn what to order next time. We started with the the seaweed salad, which came with mango in a pretty cool presentation [see photo]. For sushi rolls, we got the Cupid Roll, Ebi Supreme, Lobster Tempura Roll and Spicy Shrimp Mango Roll. We really liked the Cupid and Lobster Tempura roll but did not care for the Ebi Supreme and Spicy Shrimp Mango Roll. The Ebi Supreme was just too heavy and had these little pieces of shrimp on top that was too sweet. The spicy shrimp mango roll was not spicy. We got ice cream for dessert and it was decent. The service was fine but the food was a mixed experience. I will give it another try in the future. read more

Since my class was canceled, I had a craving for sushi, so it was time to Yelp a spot that I have not been to in the area. I found Blue Wazabi. The place is intimate, small, and at 7:30 my best friend and I were seated right away.(BYOB). We were greeted by our friendly waiter who was happy to answer our questions regarding the combos. Time to order! The green ice was on the sweeter side-which I liked. You must try the mango salad. It was delicious and a lot bigger than my friend expected. The sushi was fresh and on point-I had the spicy shrimp roll/salmon avocado with lots of spicy mayo and my eel sauce. The single rolls were averaged around $6. They had specials for $15. Madison is a pretty small, sleepy town. So I was a little surprised to hear a third Japanese restaurant was opening here, only mere steps from one of the other two. I was even more surprised a place that ambitious would be opening in the supposedly "cursed" spot of 20 Waverly, which has hosted more failed restaurants than I can count in the past ten years. Let's hope Blue Wazabi is here to stay. If Yuki Hana is the standard suburban sushi place, and Takuma is the minimalist traditional sushi place, Blue Wazabi is easily the trendy, hipster sushi place that is trying to attract the young crowds from Drew and FDU. The renovation that has gone into the space since Bento Grill closed is astounding. The atmosphere is very debonair, with small compact tables, a small sushi bar, and sleek design that are reminiscent of trendy Thai places on the LES of Manhattan.....or, at least, off the green in Morristown. To start I had a seaweed salad, which was presented gorgeously -- it's obvious they are striving for maximum aesthetic value on the food they serve up. My girlfriend had the chicken teriyaki which was good, and I actually didn't opt for sushi because I saw they had RAMEN on the menu. Yes, specialty ramen, here, in Madison. Oh my GOD. It was also really good, so my excitement was well-merited. The specialty rolls looked so good, I will definitely be back to try them. I got a take-out menu on the way out and I saw that they also DELIVER. I have a feeling Blue Wazabi is going to be a part of my life now. Speaking of more good things, they are BYOB. We have had 10 different ones and they are all Check out the special's board for some interesting combos. The place isn't all that big. Seats about 25 or so people. Underwhelmed :( we were the first ones to stop here for lunch. Place is nice but a little small. Husband and I decided to do lunch specials. His order-red curry chicken with brown rice and mine was the maki deluxe lunch special which came with the choice of 3 rolls from a small list. I chose salmon avocado, spicy salmon and spicy yellowtail. The meals came with a small salad and a bowl of miso soup. The miso soup was blah, please don't get me wrong. Miso soup despite the simplicity in preparing can be flavorful if done right. This was just mediocre. The salad and soup arrived promptly after placing our orders, but the lunch itself took a good 25 minutes. The portion sizes were pretty generous as you can see from the picture, but that's where the good part ends. The sauce was alright but the chicken and vegetables in the curry were totally bland. There was a total lack of salt. We then asked for some salt from the waitress and she looked surprised that we wanted salt. It was as if they added boiled chicken and vegetables into the red curry sauce and served it in a pretty serving platter. My sushi roils were nothing great either. Should have ordered the speciality rolls instead of the rolls on the lunch special menu :( Overall the food experience was poor and I don't think there will be a repeat visit from us to this place. read more

The Thai iced tea is homemade and delicious. The spring rolls blew our mind. We tried all of the vegetarian sushi and I'd argue that it was all more delicious than 90% of the other rolls I've had. Small and a bit cramped but totally worth it - just talk to your neighbor! read more

Sometimes I wish we had the half-star increment option. I want to give you more than 3 stars, Blue Wazabi, but you're not yet a 4. The broad strokes: -Service was good, except for a minor road bump (see below). We were seated right away and water glasses were filled as soon as they were half full. -Food was good. Comparable to Yuki Hana (also in Madison). We had several different kinds of sushi and rolls. The standout was the scallop sushi; super fresh. The roasted cauliflower with jalapeno app was good, but could have spent a bit more time in the oven roasting. The roasted eggplant with miso (Nasu _____?) was cooked well, but would have been better with more sauce. -We were asked whether we wanted fresh wasabi when we ordered and, of course, said yes. It was very fresh and spicy. What our server failed to tell us was that they charge for it. Fine, it was only $1, but I hate the hidden up sell; even for $1. We asked them to take it off the bill, which they did. We will most likely return, but with Tomo's so close in East Hanover, I can't say we'll be regulars at Blue Wazabi. read more

Me like. Service and food are phenomenal, this one's better than the restauarants in neighboring Morristown. Cant comment on the sushi but the miso ramen + yaki udon (with kimchi) were both superb. We didnt pay too much attention to the menu and thought that each dish came with salad and miso soup but it's only one or the other. The salad was fresh and the ginger dressing quite good. Our waiter happily brought us a bowl miso when he realized we thought it included both- excellent customer service (even though it was our fault!). It's a very small hole in the wall place. Sushi is good. Tastes fresh. Not sure how much is due to Covid and high demand for pick up but we waited 1.5 hours both times we ordered from here and weren't the only ones. There aren't too many other sushi spots by us so we would still come since the quality is nice. We were also given free chai teas at one point for wait time which was a nice gesture. read more

I'm giving Blu wasabi be a five star review or not because it really deserves five stars but because it is the best Sushi Place in the Madison and Chatham area. You get a ton of sushi for the money and the sushi is generally pretty high-quality. However this is by no means comparable to some of the better sushi places in New York City. For instance the sushi chefs are not Japanese but they are from China. They have a 5 piece omakase menu which is obviously not a complete meal.However the fact that they even have one is a plus for this area. I had the sushi deluxe and I was absolutely stuffed by the end. My entire bill came out to be $33 with tip and that included the soup 12 pieces of sushi roll and dessert. Giving this two stars because most of what we ordered was edible - the tuna pizza was good, but had an obnoxious amount of crunch on top, which made it crumbly. The spicy shrimp mango roll was good, but their basic rolls were smaller than what I'm used to. Their raw fish wasn't very good, though. My fiancé and I went on a Wednesday, so not prime time, but even for an off day, the fish was hard to eat. The tuna tasted dirty, the white tuna was sour, and the salmon was so slimy, that I couldn't get it down. They definitely don't guarantee fresh fish in the middle of the week. read more

This is the worst restaurant when it comes to customer service and is completely dishonest with customers. I have placed orders 3 times earlier in the evening around 6:30pm, with a 7:30pm delivery noted and each time there is a delay well over an hour.... thus 2 hours to receive your order. Most recently, they canceled our order when it was supposed to arrive at 7:30pm and after 8:30pm we got a message that they "could not handle all orders"! This is after placing an order at 6:24pm...it took 2 hours to realize this? And, we still do not have our money refunded, which is fraud! We were then left with no dinner as it was too late to order from most places in our area. Previously, there was an actual metal staple found in the rice (that my 11 year old daughter was going to eat). I called Blue Wazabi and they begged for us to give them another chance so this would not happen again. Yet, they failed again. Stay healthy and avoid loss of your money and DO NOT eat or order from here! read more

Really enjoyed the takeout sushi I had from Blue Wazabi today. I ordered the beauty and the beast roll and despite it being packaged to go, the presentation was beautiful and more importantly, everything tasted very fresh and was ready within ten minutes of my phone call. Only downside was that the center of the roll is crunchy spicy tuna but I didn't really get much of the crunch I was desiring but that's not nearly enough of a complaint to dock this place any points! Friendly staff both over the phone and when I arrived in person. Not sure if I would eat in here as the tables are extremely close together so it seems like it would get noisy fast and the atmosphere is extremely dark. Two things I personally do not enjoy, but to each their own! Will definitely be trying more of their signature rolls in the near future. read more

We went for dinner on Saturday night, and the place was packed. We didn't have a reservation, but we were able to sit at the sushi bar. I love sushi, and my partner isn't a big sushi fan, so the menu was great for both of us. They have a nice selection of sushi as well as other Japanese cooked food. I chose an appetizer and a couple of rolls and he ordered the shrimp hibachi dinner. First, let me start by saying we came here mainly because of the really good yelp reviews. I am very careful as to where I eat anything raw. Any restaurant with an average rating of 4.5 stars with 45 reviews is definitely worth trying. It also helps that it's a BYOB restaurant. We brought beer, but will probably bring wine or sake next time. He got his soup and salad first - and as far as clear broth soup and salad goes, he said it was good. Then came my Roasted Cauliflower with Jalapeno sauce. It was AMAZING. The cauliflower was cooked perfectly - still a bit crunchy - and the jalapeno sauce was spicy but not too spicy. It was a surprising combination, and I wished I could get a jar of the jalapeno sauce to use on grilled chicken or shrimp. I think it would be great on ANYTHING! Then came his hibachi shrimp dinner. I admit it - I tasted all the different components. Everything was great - from the perfectly cooked and seasoned shrimp, down to the noodles and vegetables. Both dipping sauces were flavorful and completely different! Then my artfully presented rolls came out on a platter. I ordered the Beauty and the Beast roll, and a salmon/avocado roll. The quality of the rolls was great. Everything was fresh and beautifully presented. The Beauty and the Beast roll was amazing. The salmon/avocado roll was good - salmon was fresh and the roll was nicely made. We were watching the sushi chefs making other rolls, and each item they prepared looked incredible. Next time, I am going to the try Bronx Bomber! While we were there, MANY people were coming in for large take-out orders, and the sushi chefs were preparing as many take out orders as regular restaurant orders. It's good to know they pack things well for take-out. We'll keep that in mind for next time. I hope this place stays around for a very, VERY long time. This is a Japanese restaurant run by Chinese people who have not spent a ton of time in Japan so there's little things wrong here and there. BUT, the sushi was really quite good AND a very decent deal. We spent like $50 for what would have been $120 in sushi anywhere else. I'll totally come here again if I find myself in Madison. read more

Great guy who has worked at several high profile places in the city and is now following his dream of owning his own place. He gave us a few suggestions (and it wasn't to order the most expensive things on the menu like they do in EVERY other sushi place) and we went with them. Wow. The tuna tartar pyramids were Banging!!! I could have eaten 15 of them and just had them all night. They are like rice potato pancakes topped off with tuna tartar with a crispy tempura like batter over them with just enough spicy mayo----un freaking believable We also were big fans of "the fisherman's catch" and "the luck of the Irish" rolls This will now be my go to spot in this area. I ordered the maki deluxe lunch special at 3:30 (which is when they stop doing lunch specials) but they let me order it anyway no problem. Went there at 8pm on a Friday night, was seated pretty quickly by a friendly hostess, then it all went down hill from there. Our waitress was NOT in a good mood. When we asked questions about the menu we were given "single word" answers. We ordered 2 rolls and a hibachi combo. The hibachi came out in 15 mins but the rolls did not arrive for another 30 mins. I had literally finished my entire meal, and not until we prompted our waitress until the sushi bar started making our rolls. After all that the food was SUBPAR. To top it off, our waitress tried to charge us for two orders of the hibachi combo. When we pointed out the mistake she took our check, no apology, and changed the charge. Nothing again when she stopped by the table again to drop off the check. We probably will not be going back to this place. There is much better sushi down the road. read more

This new place just opened last night where Bento Grill used to be, in the middle of Madison. I've only tried the spicy maki combo (spicy tuna, yellowtail, and salmon) and these are the best spicy rolls I've had in the area. There were actually large pieces of fish in the rolls, not the uniform goop filling that some places serve. For roll filling, the fish also tasted very fresh and not at all old. If anything, they could actually have been spicier. But I was very impressed. I also believe the owners are actually Japanese, and the menu is almost all Japanese food, with a little of Thai stuff in the lunch specials. But this is not one of those Chinese/Japanese/Thai places where everything is mediocre. One neat thing is there is actually an omakase option (this is where the sushi chef chooses what to serve you, hopefully from the best available fish). I'm planning to try this next, and I'd also like to try the hot food eventually. I'll update this review eventually when I've tried out more stuff, but so far I think I've got a new favorite sushi place. New additions: Yellowtail jalapeno roll. Awesome, he took a strip of fresh yellowtail, took a fresh jalapeno pepper and diced it up into the roll. Fresh fish and fresh pepper, very good. Spicy scallop roll: AMAZING. Raw scallop, tobiko, and crunchy flakes. The scallop had a sweet, ocean flavor and just the right consistency. So fresh, I've had scallop once before as nigiri and even that was not as good. Definitely recommend. Sashimi deluxe: See picture. All fresh raw fish and some octopus pieces, no egg, cooked shrimp, or crab stick. So good. Squid nigiri: They blowtorch the squid for a few seconds so it is slightly cooked, making it more tender than usual. Different, and very good. Pad thai: Tried the Pad Thai the other night for something different. Not the very best I've ever had, but pretty darn good. And I'm comparing it to Pad Thai from Thai restaurants in Chinatowns. There was lots of chicken and tofu and egg and the sauce had that special "Thai" flavor that is often lacking in cheap versions of the dish. This tasted more authentic than lots of lower end Thai restaurants. Pretty impressed. read more
