Service and quality of the cocktails was fabulous. I had a sampling for old fashioned and ordered both the campfire smore and the smoked variations---both were very good in their own way. My bartender was great (didn't get her name) but she offered up quick service and gave me some fabulous food recommendations to try for oyster HH and the Newport area. We got to the Marriott late (thank you Amtrak) last night and only had about 40 minutes until we had to take an Uber to a function in Barrington. We asked if we could order and have our meals made quickly. Our server said no problem. They did everything possible to expedite our cheeseburgers (which were flavorful) and salads. They also brought us our check with the meal as we had requested. Though we had not counted on such generous portions and had them pack up our leftovers which we put in our room fridge and had for breakfast(!), we made it to our Uber on time. Just no. I recommend choosing any other restaurant. We made a reservation for our anniversary but didnt need one as when we arrived the restaurant was mostly empty. However the host sat us in the smallest table in the corner. [You know the table people usually sit at when there arent any others available.] My server had no personality and didnt wait for me to make specifications to my requested dish before walking away. I had to call her back several times. Food was subpar and overpriced. Common sense tells most of us if you're going to pay that much at least dine somewhere worth the price. Five star service. Was greeted with a smile and seated at a perfect table for one who wanted to get some work done over dinner. Stephanie was a delight. We literally come and stay in this hotel to go to the restaurant as we live in CT. service is always good- servers are attentive! I'm giving this rating to whoever is managing this restaurant, not to our waiter. Our waiter was VERY friendly and made sure we were accommodated as much as he could. I believe the negative results of this experience were out of his control. The menu has plenty to offer (see photo). My dad ordered the clam chowder, which he said was very good and came out at an average time for an appetizer. However, when it came time for all of our entrees, my brother's Margherita flatbread came out with a plain Cobb salad (which nobody ordered) and a vegan salad (the one I ordered) with chicken on it. I believe my dad ordered the Cobb salad with chicken, but the order was all wrong, and my mom's lobster sliders still hadn't come out. My dad ended up just taking the chicken off of my salad and putting it on the Cobb salad. He said the chicken was very dry and tough, and the Cobb salad was "half-assed." The waiter did take my salad back and say that a new one was being made, which was great, but it wasn't until 5 minutes later when our other two entrees came out. My mom said the lobster rolls were good, but average. My brother loved the flatbread and my salad was pretty good - just warm which was weird, but I think it's because the carrots were cooked and the salad must have been tossed beforehand. I'm a typically a fan of Marriott restaurants but this one had extremely slow service and mediocre food. It was soo slow I didn't want to send back my overcooked burger. I had dinner the first night in the restaurant the Bluefin and service was extremely slow. I started with a cup of clam chowder which was very tasty and ordered a burger with fries. I requested the burger medium rare, it came out well done so it was a tad dry and didn't have a lot of flavor. The waitress took forever to replace my water and due to the wait I decided to pass on dessert and just headed back to the room. Unfortunately this is not a restaurant that I would recommend, and actually I probably would never go back to this hotel either unless it was updated. read more

The Bluefin Grill is the restaurant at the Downtown Marriott, I had the opportunity to sample both food and drink, mostly at the bar which was fairly busy when we returned from dinner after visiting area vendors. A couple of days in we finished early enough that I ended up being on my own for lunch - the Bluefin was just the ticket as I sat at the bar and enjoyed a couple of pints of beer (there was a list of local craft for $5 a pint - quite a deal). Although this is a Harpoon mug, it's actually a Dogfish Head 60 Minute IPA - one of my favorites! Service was very good and I could tell by the techniques employed by the bartender that she was well trained (not that pouring beer takes much but the mixed drinks she was making for others were very well done). Both the restaurant and the food were rather above par for a typical hotel. There was also a great "Gameday Special" cited "Burger and Beer $12" and "Angus Beef, aged cheddar, crisp bacon, lettuce, tomato, onion and a pickle paired with a selection of one of the beers below" - I passed on the $3 beer selection and want with something crafty. I also ordered a side-salad instead of fries in an attempt to eat a bit healthier - not that I succeeded very well if you look at my other area posts. In all, the food, even as a special burger, was exceptional. I don't know if there's a better hotel in Providence, but the food at the Downtown Marriott makes all the difference in my book. This restaurant was nothing but disappointing. The menu is limited and pretty sure it's all frozen and microwaved, at least it tastes like it. I ordered the butternut squash/apple bisque and I could tell it was microwaved by the way the soup temperature was hot on some sides and cooler on others. Also it's June and butternut squash is not in season so definitely not fresh. For entrees I ordered the rustic sandwich and the chicken was rubbery. My boyfriend ordered the chicken entree and just said it was okay also they put some apple thing as a vegetable which also was strange since that is more of a fall side. Service was ok and the ambiance looked nice since they just renovated it although it was right by the lobby and seems like this hotel gets crowded with kids during events. Lobby is nothing special and pretty under whelming for a Marriott property. I wouldn't recommend this restaurant as there are so many others that are fresh and local near by. read more

So I admit I'm not too knowledgeable about Rhode Island and it's fare but upon some Googling and license plate reading (it's the Ocean State!), my family and I decided to find some seafood for lunch. When we realized the Bluefin Grille wasn't too far from where we were, we decided to take a chance. This place is located inside a Marriott but there was a decent amount of parking and we didn't need to valet or get anything validated. The restaurant wasn't too deep into the hotel and there were only a few people inside so we were promptly seated. However, upon looking at the menu, we were disappointed that there were few seafood choices. Then again, there is a possibility that the dinner menu has more seafood entrees. Here's what we decided to get: New England clam chowder: $6 for a big portion compared to where you might go for other places. Not bad at all! Creamy and had nice chunks of potatoes and clams. Pan Seared salmon: $17 for pan seared salmon with mustard vinegarette with roasted fingerling potatoes, cherry tomatoes, kalamata olives and warm green beans. Very succulent and juicy salmon. The vegetables were done just right, not over-cooked. Grilled cheese sliders with tomato fondue: $10 for approximately 6 grilled cheese sliders composed of small baguette slices and white cheese. I thought it was cute/funny that the tomato bisque was referred to as a "fondue". It was essentially fancied up grilled cheese and tomato soup. Hard to mess that one up, pretty good. While the food was solid, service was... on the slow side. Maybe it's a Rhode Island thing or I'm used to a more fast-paced lifestyle where I'm from but waiting for someone to take our orders, waiting for our food to be delivered, and waiting for the check to be taken care of took a reeaalllly long time. My family and I just felt like we were doing a lot of waiting while we were there. If you are in the area and want a bite to it, the food here is good but don't expect this to be a quick bite. read more

Overall, service was slow, the food was not so good, and the prices were high Vs the value. We had: Caesar Salad - big enough for three to share. Needed a lot of pepper. 3 dinners: Sword fish. Way over cooked Steak fritz - the steak was great, but the grits were Just roasted fingerling potatoes Duck special - WAY over cooked. All this for $99 plus tip. We ordered their pork sirloin special, New England clam chowder soup and stir fry tofu. What can go wrong, right? The clam chowder was very good. Well balanced taste, not starchy like others. Definitely worth getting again. The pork sirloin special was served to my dinner partner, a retired butcher. He knows his meat. The pork sirloin's glaze was good and the vegetable combination is ok. The big disappointment is the pork sirloin. It was grilled and then served as 4 slices, each about 1/2"-3/4" thick. That's not a good way to serve the pork sirloin as it tasted dry and flat. A better way, explained my butcher friend, is to slice it thin after cooking. It will not only make it tender but absorb the glace well. Anyway too pricey for this quality. Stir fried tofu is the biggest let down. It was so salty, my tongue hurts even after downing a big glass of water. The wait person offered to bring it back and remove the sauce. It was still super salty. She offered to have the chef re-cook and I said sure and to do it without the sauce. The 3rd attempt was way better than the first 2. It was definitely the sauce they use which made this dish less than 1 star. The dish, as a vegetarian dish, would have tasted fantastic with just the fried onions, broccoli and peppers. The tofu used for this dish was good. Clean taste with simple salt and pepper. Anyway, this was served over some green rice. I recognized it as short grain rice and could tell that it was just a tad under cooked as you can bite into the center. A little bit more time would have made the rice perfect. Anyway, remember I asked for no sauce? They put a little sauce and too salty for me and so I had to skip the rice. 2 stars for food, 5 stars for trying to please a customer. They did not charge me for the stir fry tofu dish, so I gave the wait person a big big tip. read more

Bluefin is a perfectly adequate hotel restaurant located in the Marriott. It is pretty spacious and there was ample open seating when I stopped in. My server was pretty friendly and the food came out surprisingly quickly. My clam chowder was rather bland. The clams were a little gritty and the veggies were super well done. Overall it was a sad clam chowder being that we are in Rhode Island. My salmon was decent, but nothing memorable. It was served with some pretty terrible beans/rice type dish. I don't even know what it was, but it sucked! Also, sticking with the theme of indifference, the bread was simply two cold butt ends of a loaf. Nothing about the meal was beyond what I would expect at Red Lobster in any city, much less Providence. I wasn't expecting too much, so I wasn't let down. I was happy to just have a quick dinner at my hotel after a long day of travel. If you are looking for a great seafood dinner the I suggest you look elsewhere. read more

For the price, the food is OK. I went for a group dinner with some colleagues and ordered from the Prix Fixe menu. I got fish of the day which was swordfish cast iron blackened with remoulade and sauteed baby spinach which also came with a soup and a raspberry sorbet. The chef gave a complimentary mussel with curried apple sauce which I thought was very tasty. Back to the dinner, I thought the fish was good and the spinach was good, but I didn't like the combination, I guess the texture the sauteed spinach leaves in your mouth doesn't compliment the fish too well. The service was good and the food came out in no time. The taste of the food is definitely there but not enough to bring me back because it's expensive for the amount of food you get. read more

This is a restaurant located within the marriot hotel. Came here for dinner with some friends. The crab cakes were fantastic, lots of crab and flavor. You can skip out on the calamari because it was small and nothing to call home about. The table had a combination of scallops with different sauces. You can get the scallops cooked a various amount of ways, we had blackened and pan seared. Loved both! The scallops were HUGE. The lobster butter sauce was great, went well with the garlic spinach. Now when you order the side, it's a small portion so if you're hungry order another. The drinks are good, just make sure when reading cocktail menu and if the drink has "vodka" in it, please request the type of vodka. Otherwise it will taste like well vodka and I cannot drink well vodka. It makes me sick. Would I come here again for dinner? If I was staying at the hotel, yes. But there are better seafood places. We came here in the morning for breakfast. They had an omelette station and all the fixings for breakfast. Eggs, sausage, bacon, potatoes, fruits, bagels, salmon, breakfast pastries. As a perennial skeptic about hotels, their services, and the oft mediocre food I must say that this Marriott exceeded expectations by miles. We enjoyed a set of drinks at the pool bar and were entertained by Jason who is a paragon of mixology. Second, we made a special request for a "picnic basket" lunch to take to the beach on Independence Day in Newport! Jillian Ford exceeded our expectations by accommodating requests for BLTs, fruit and drinks in a form we could transport in a cooler! Typically, I look forward to hotel food about as much as I do a trip to the dentist. There are times when you think that they're cooking merely out of convenience and want to be able to say that yes, they have a restaurant. Normally, hotel food served in a restaurant is no different than that which is brought to your room and eaten off your bed while watching episodes of "Law and Order". Thankfully, this is not the case with the Bluefin Grille found in the Providence Marriott (http://www.yelp.com/biz/providence-marriott-providence) I never in my life thought that I would be able to find great seafood in a hotel. Least of which a hotel that I was staying in. The Bluefin defies all reasoning and brings to the table an adequate décor for a hotel dining room and fantastic food and specials that are well worth the price of admission. You know you're on to a good thing when the locals actually speak highly of food and venture in themselves. The wine list is quite decent, and if you need, the scotch menu from the bar is more than adequate to satisfy most. What comes out best here, however, is the food. It isn't just the seafood they should be proud of. Yes, their seafood ravioli which comes in a two-tone pasta folded over a huge scallop and large chunks of lobster is fantastic. This place was the first place I ever had pork chops served to me that were anything other than well done. I didn't know that it was okay to have them any other way until my server said so. What do I know? I have now had nothing but medium cooked pork chops, and I have the Bluefin to thank for it. read more

This review is my first because I felt obligated to share the fantastic time I had at this restaurant. I am from Providence and wanted to orchestrate a "Date Night" for my boyfriend and me. I called in on a Monday morning to make the reservation for 730. I joked with the hostess about "Date Night" and how we should get a romantic table in the back. Well, when we arrived the host kindly greeted us and said, "730? Date Night? We've got something special in the back for you." So, he walks us through the restaurant to the back room, at least 25 tables, and seats us at our own private table in this empty room. They had a different soundtrack of jazz and love songs playing in our room and specialties from the chef were brought out for us to try. The food was absolutely delicious (4.5 stars). We had the calamari, sun-dried tomato butter with out bread, pan-seared halibut, and made to order grilled swordfish in a tarragon vinaigrette followed by a delectable piece of New York style cheesecake. Their ginger-pear martini was unique and tasty, definitely worth trying. Their scotch list was extensive and thorough. The wait staff was pleasant and the atmosphere was tailored to perfection. All in all I couldn't have asked for a better restaurant to have "Date Night" at. Furthermore, I couldn't recommend this place any more than I already have. Give them a try. read more

I give this place zero stars out of five. I don't know about anyone else, but every experience I've had here has been bad. Service was extremely and painfully slow although I was having lunch after 2 and only a handful of patrons were inside. I ordered a burger and it was dry and the bun chalky and stiff. The prices are insanely high for what you get. The drink choices are pretty standard for a hotel bar restaurant. If you are in Providence visiting, this is the last place you'd want to eat. I wasn't so sure I was going to like this place when I read that it was located inside the Marriot hotel, but actually, I rather enjoyed myself. The lobby was crowded with business people in suits and ties on laptops and signing papers. When you get passed that, you see a little area labeled "Bluefin Grille". Everyone was friendly and a little quirky - I like quirky. We were seated and had our water glasses filled immediately. Our waitress was a little flighty and very slow! ....did I mention that there were only 2 tables occupied? Anyway.... The food was very delicious. Since I've been trying this whole diet low cal thing this week... I was pleased to see that they had a section labeled "Simply Fish" where I could choose: *Type of fish *Style of cooking *Sauce it is prepared in *Side dish This allowed for me to make myself a very healthy and tasty meal without going crazy with calories with all sorts of extra sauces and garnishment that I wouldn't eat anyway. The tuna was served raw and was seared perfectly. I chose the pineapple salsa and fell in love with it, they definitely don't give you enough of it, so you might want to ask for a 2nd or maybe even a 3rd side dish of it! Last night I had the lobster risotto and enjoyed the flavor though the lobster was a bit tough from overcooking. The risotto was perfectly cooked. I would definitely recommend it. Tonight I had the Ciopino. The serving size was great but the sauce was uninspired and again, the lobster was overcooked. I tasted the haddock dish that my lady friend had and it was a little too salty for my taste, but it was cooked just right. Yay for the breakfast buffet! It costs about $15. It a bit expensive because they don't offer that many items on the buffet. They have an omelet station and waffle station. I didn't have a change to get an omelet because there was a huge line and there was only one person making the omelets (I felt bad for him 'cause some of the people in line were real assholes). Anyway... Other items on the buffet include: scrambled eggs, pastries, bacon, sausage, corned beef hash, fresh fruit, yogurt, milk, oatmeal, lox, and cereal. The waffles were really fluffy! Fresh seafood that was perfectly cooked (and believe me I had some overcooked seafood on this trip). The Chioppino was nice though a bit over salted. Our waiter did a great job, he was friendly and skilled at his job, but I don't know what the management was thinking when the put together the schedule- do they not talk to hotel booking? I've actually been here several times. Over Christmas, my parents were staying here, and they're big fans of eating right in the hotel. As always, restaurant competition is tough in Providence, and being a food snob, I was kind of like, "I'm sure the food will just be mediocre." But it was pretty good. I recall enjoying the sea salt french fries immensely. However, my latest experience was for the breakfast buffet, and it was unpleasant. Not because of the food. The food was really good, but the service was TERRIBLE. We were told the wait for a table would be twenty minutes. An hour later, after tables beyond us were sat, and I'm seeing a half dozen empty tables in the restaurant, we were seated. Then the unchipper server comes over to take our drink order. When we get up to the buffet, they were out of waffles. The chef at the omelet station offered to bring me some when they came out. Ten minutes later I go back to check on the waffle status and there they are, sitting in the tray and NOT brought to my table. This was also my second time at the buffet where they ran out of food. BUT, the omelet station is incredible, one of my friends raved about the bacon, and another about the warm, freshly baked muffins. Not to mention, my late waffles were light, crispy and delicious. They also comped us a mimosa for having to wait so long, but I guess I would've done more? I don't know. Take it with a grain of salt. It's yummy food that you have to wait an inordinate amount of time for and keep bugging the staff to bring out more of it. That's why these kind of reviews are always hard to write. I'll also mention that we are going back for the Easter brunch, but I made a reservation so hopefully that will help with the wait situation. We'll see. read more

The food was great! It was my birthday, and we found this place on the restaurant week list, so we decided to try it out. I got a smoked salmon bruschetta (only on the restaurant week menu) and loved it. I also tried to seared salmon, and finished it off with the sorbet. Portions were good for me, but dessert was just too much. I got the raspberry sorbet, and it was good but not super frozen and heaped into a small bowl. I'm a small person, so take this with a grain of salt, but I couldn't finish it. Now, the reason for the low rating: SERVICE. The place was fairly empty. We were one of the only large (5 people) parties. We arrived at 6:35/6:40 and we had made reservations, but our table wasn't ready. We sat, ordered drinks, and they were out of the drink on the menu and had to give me a different prosecco (of course it took them 10 minutes to figure this out). The mule was watered down, and if it wasn't a beer, it took so long to get the drink. The appetizers came out maybe an hour after arriving, and main courses didn't come out until well past 8pm. We didn't finish dinner and dessert until 9pm! I did not expect to spend my entire night waiting at a slow and sleepy restaurant. While the food was good, it was expensive. The food also did not outweigh the issues with the slow service. I would not recommend unless you are staying at the hotel and have nothing else to do. read more

Okay, we ended up here by default after two other venues fell through. As a rule, I would never choose to eat in a restaurant in a hotel; however, I was proven wrong. We had the Wellfleet oysters, crabcakes, halibut, shrimp and asparagus ravioli and finished with the Boston Bombe dessert. All items were skillfully prepared and seasoned. Very happy. This is one of two restaurants located inside the Downtown Marriott (the other being Aqua). As far as hotel restaurants go, this one's pretty good. I haven't had the opportunity to try anything besides dinner and drinks, but I've enjoyed those consistently. The drinks are always fantastic - the bartenders certainly know how to make a mix drink here. The bartenders are a little slow. Not too bad, though. Other than that, the service was excellent. There is an okay selection of food. For some reason, they have two separate menus to order off of. I don't really get that, but whatever. I haven't been disappointed by anything yet, though some things stand out - thai chicken skewers, their burgers, and their flatbreads. The Bluefin has some amazing dishes, and I didn't expect this from a restaurant in a hotel. The dish that I love the most is the Braised Short Rib with mashed potatoes and asparagus. There is also an espresso gravy with this entree that is superb. When in Providence I highly recommend the Bluefin, and the service I've had has always been excellent. read more
