What an incredible spot for a good, healthy meal. We came here for breakfast during a nice few days in DC. We had been grubbing at some less than healthy establishments, so we decided to fill up on some fruits and veggies to feel better about ourselves. Bluestone Lane West End Cafe did not disappoint. All the ordering and paying is done via QR code on the table. You order from a menu that has great descriptions and pictures of the food, pay, and they bring it out to you. It's a wonderful system. Although not breakfast, I got the rainbow bowl (pro tip - add smoked salmon to take it to the next level). It was a fantastic combination of grains, veggies, a poached egg, and a small amount of a delicious sauce to tie it all together. It was super filling and left me satisfied and energized. This Bluestone location in the middle of DC had a nice upscale city vibe. We stumbled upon it on a warm fall day after an appointment in the city. We were drawn by the busy atmosphere and the bright blue umbrellas and matching blue coffee cups-which we tracked down on the internet and purchased some for our home coffee service. Although it was busy,we found a table outside and proceeded to order with the Qcode. Tons to choose from, including all day 'brekkies'. Everything was served quickly at the table on real plates and the aforementioned blue coffee cups. Staff was very nice. Food was delicious and experience was great! This cafe attached to the new library is purportedly Australian. I know a thing or two about the Australian brunch cafe scene, and this is definitely reminiscent of cafes Down Under, from the "Brekkie Board" to the mixing of a business with a public library. However, since this place is in the U.S., you don't have the pleasure of realizing that the prices are 20% less than they seem due to the exchange rate, with tipping unheard of over there as well. Thus, this cafe is damned expensive for what it is, which I don't like with it being attached to the library. The food had a pretty presentation. They have plenty of vegan and gf options. Their avocado on toast had a few sprigs and cherry tomatoes, while their granola came with a fairly sour coconut yogurt. The matcha latte I got was strong, small, and needed some sugar-thankfully turbinado was at the table. They had an odd service model that I never quite figured out. It seemed that you order at the counter, but I was brought to a table when I chose to dine in. Then when I was done, I went up to pay and was sent back to my table so someone could come around around to do it with an iPad (they're cashless, which I'm not a fan of). It is a nice modern looking space but it was a bit cramped in there and hard to move through the other tables when I wanted to leave. The food was okay, but you can do a lot better (I'm thinking of a similar breakfast combo I had a mile away at Pleasant Pops which had way more food for way less money, or anything at Teaism). The portions at Bluestone were small, and while they gave it a good go, this cuisine did not have the creativity, quantity of fresh fruit, or delectability of a beachside cafe on the Gold Coast. And for what they're charging, it really ought to be perfect. They don't seem to have any trouble filling their tables, but I'll probably take my business elsewhere. read more

This is my favorite coffee shop mainly because of the abundance of natural light they have inside. The coffee is really good as well. We were sat right next to the floor to ceiling windows which let in lots of beautiful filtered sunlight. The menu offers several healthy traditional breakfast options including avocado toast, porridge, quinoa rainbow bowls, and a smattering of toast options. Everything sounded delicious but I went for the green baked eggs which came out a little runny which was perfect to dip some warm, crusty bread into. I could not help and be a little bit extra and get the wellness flight featuring a trio of matcha, beet, and tumeric lattes. It traditionally comes with almond milk but they happily substituted oat milk for me. Service was lovely, the food was great and presentation was beautiful and unique. Bluestone Lane IS a coffee shop. That's all it can be until they figure how to run the place when it gets busy. Our party of 2 came close to walking out because it took extremely long for our food to arrive. We also received little to no service from the guy waiting on us. I felt terrible for the number of people around us waiting for their food, or at least for their servers to come back to check on them. Even trying to pay for the bill was a challenge. I saw a party get up to ask for their bill for their drinks. They couldn't wait for their food any longer....yes that's how ridiculous they are. I've been to a much smaller Bluestone Lane in San Francisco. I certainly didn't expect crappy and slow service like this. It looks very nice, but not the place you want to be at on a Saturday morning. Take a look at my bowl....that took about 45 minutes- one hour to arrive at my table. The only thing they had to cook was the ONE egg. We were starving and realized that we made a huge mistake by coming here. My bowl was okay, but not worth the wait. I would have been happy with a croissant from anywhere else. There are both indoor and outdoor seating. It's a nice looking place and attached to a public library. If you're just looking to grab a quick coffee or drink, Bluestone is not a bad choice. I've had their coffee before. I dislike American culture because we all feel obligated to tip, even when the service is terrible or nonexistent. After sitting without water for a while, we finally waved someone down to bring us more water. Every time we needed assistance, we had to get the servers attention. My experience was actually worse the 2nd time. Server error with the combination of food preparation issues was an epic fail for our meal. Our server greeted us, got us beverages (chai latte, Lorne fresh-pressed juice and lemongrass ginger tea - all very good would definitely order all three again). LATTE Espresso with steamed, silky textured milk and 1 inch of microfoam *super bitter, got a medium and only finished 1/3 of it BATHROOM It was clean, had soap and paper towels but that disgusting odor still ever present. They need either an automated air freshener or better circulation. You could smell it before you got to the door. Throughout our meal food runners were confused about where to drop off food and beverages at various tables - are there table numbers? Why is it so confusing? We were waiting for the check for about 20min, he literally never came back. Service has worsened significantly since I started frequenting this place years ago. Staff is not properly trained, floor and tables are not kept clean, and they mess up with orders all the time. Today we had to wait for more than 30 minutes as we watched other orders that had been placed after we got there being sent to other patrons. Cutest coffee shop in DC. I know they are super famous in New York so I got very excited when they opened 2 of their stores in DC. The one located in 23rd street has better spot, with seatings and cute atmosphere. The one in Georgetown doesnt have seatings (except for few seats outside). the food is very healthy and delicious. A bit overpriced but the taste makes up for it. If you are a student, 23rd street location has wifi --even though they say they dont. You can use the library next door's free wifi, which is working pretty well from the entire coffeeshop. My favorite juice drink is Yarraville --super delicious and amazing for detox. CUSTOMER SERVICE: The Manager is laid-back and hardworking. He was very accommodating to me, my sister, and my boyfriend. He answered the questions we had in a positive and chill attitude. I'm not for sure if it was a coincidence, but our waitress was our waitress from before. I appreciate the waitress's effort as to redeem from her performance from before. FOOD: FINALLY I've tried their food! I got the Breakfast Bowl, which was recommended by the Manager. In America, the food tends to unhealthy, and big-portioned, but here I thought it was small-portioned and it was VERY healthy (which I love). I enjoyed this dish! I also ordered their Long Black Coffee. It was very strong and quite bitter, which I love my coffee to be. According to the Manager, their food and vibes of the cafe is Australian inspired. This is one of my favorite coffee chains in the DC area! The locations are so cute and very modern/hip and they have so much good food and coffee options. The coffee chain has an Australian vibe and that's also reflected in the menu. I have gone several times each time I've tried something new but just as delicious as the last! Breakfast Bowl - Very yummy and light. Once finished you feel super satisfied but not overly full. Paired with the Aussie Coffee with oat-milk is a perfect meal. Banana Bread - Omg this is such a sweet treat and so delicious. The fruit/cheese/bread is such a different combination but it is defiantly worth trying! Vegetarian Brekkie Bowl - This is the perfect meal if you are super hungry and need a big filling. There's so much yummy food in this pairing with the cheese/avocado toast/greens/eggs/mushrooms. It's perfect. It's a Australian inspired New York coffee brand debuting our first, and largest, shop in DC. The owners are Australian (Shout out to Andrew. He's one of the owners and very friendly. He's the type of guy you'd want to be), but it's not an Australian brand going global. Still, it carries with it the down to earth class of Australia. Bluestone Lane serves brunch and coffee in a classically, simple environment. The coffee is roasted and the juice pressed in NYC and their food cooked fresh daily in DC. There's an area with the friendliest table service and a coffee bar selling pastries and coffee to go. My 8 ounce latte cost $5 with a 15% tip (not bad for DC) and was hand crafted perfectly. It was smooth and barely needed sugar. One thing I noticed was no latte art was included. Maybe really coffee doesn't need it? Regardless, Bluestone Lane is a welcome addition to DC and I predict will rise as one of DC's beloved coffee shops. read more

I got the BLATE (bacon, arugula, tomato, egg, garlic aioli) on a toasted brioche bun. It was literally to die for. I was starving and it was amazing! I did sub the potato wedges for a side salad, which I kind of wish I hadn't done because the salad dressing was extremely tart- so much so I couldn't finish it but the blate made up for it! I also got the berry brekkie smoothie that was delicious! It tasted like it had real fruit in it and was just absolutely delicious. I was looking forward to coming here based on photos and how cute + chic everything looked. I live for a cute brunch vibe and trendy aesthetics but unfortunately long wait times & service quality dampened my first experience here. Our food & drinks took uncharacteristically long to be brought out ( 30+ minutes). I don't mind waiting especially during peak brunch hours on a Saturday afternoon but I became frustrated seeing patrons that got seated after us getting their orders first (the same items we had ordered). The staff seemed to be confused because there was a lot of pointing between tables & servers as the food was coming out of the kitchen. Our server was nice, but barely checked in with us. We flagged her down a couple times to ask if our orders would be coming soon and she responded: "I'll go check with the kitchen to see where your order is. Should be soon." But then she didn't come back to follow up. It got to the point where she avoided eye contact with me each time she came around lol. So our food arrives, we're finally occupied with something to do, food pictures to take. My sister realized they had forgotten her orange juice and told her server this. She checked her tablet to pull up our order, apologized and said it would be right out. Skip to the end of the meal.... she never got the orange juice lol. We didn't want it anymore since we were finished eating but reminded her about it just to be sure we wouldn't be charged for it. She apologized again, assured us we wouldn't be charged, and brought out an orange juice anyway she said would be free. At the end of a very long, dragged out meal (actually the meal took a total of 30 minutes to finish but we were there for 2+ hours) I was so ready to wrap it up and leave that I signed the check without really glancing at it and come to find out later that we were charged for the original and* extra orange juice *facepalm* really .. Overall it was okay. + The ambiance is hipster & trendy. Because the cafe is connected to a library, waiting for a table isn't really an issue - you're free to roam around and occupy yourself with books + The food leans more on the healthy side (gluten free) instead of a hearty meal that will really fill you up. Not recommended if you're in the mood for a boozy brunch + I like that they use tablets to expedite the ordering/check out process (even though it wasn't in our case). - The service could use improvement. The coffee was delicious. The juice fresh and tasty. We tried a variety of things including the avocado toast, eggs, oatmeal, side salad, mushrooms and more. The food was excellent. Great quality and all prepared with care and yet the portions were not too small. I really enjoyed the atmosphere, business types, couples, families, and singles. All fit perfectly here.
