I wanted something light so I ordered off the happy hour menu. I had the lobster rolls minis with fries and a side of cabbage. The sliders were good but only had handful of fries. My best friend took me here for my birthday. this was my first time coming here and the first thing I noticed was the name of the place sounded familiar to a restaurant in Laurel (Mad Cow). We found out they are both owned by the same person. We were here on a Tuesday night. We both ordered the margarita flights. They were so good. I was three different flavors. I can't remember all of them except for passionfruit was very sweet. They were strong but good next we had the jerk chicken tacos. Those tacos were so good. They were a little too spicy for me, but I still ate them all lol!! Next, I had the Parmesan crusted lollipops (lamb chops). It came with its own sauce. The lamb chops were so good. You didn't even really need the sauce. It was so well seasoned. I love the texture of the crunchy on the outside and the meat was so tender. I cannot remember our waiters name I know he just started. Three of my girlfriends and I came here for Sunday brunch. We were seated immediately which was great. Booth seats were wet & wood chairs had crumbs & food particles on it. Not so great. The restaurant itself is underwhelming. This is not a place you go for Sunday funday. It was very lowkey. I also feel like you can wear whatever. Two of us ordered shrimp & grits, the other two ordered "crispy" chicken & waffles. My friends thought the shrimp & grits were too salty. My "crispy" chicken & waffles were bland and the chicken wasn't crispy. Actually the furthest thing from it. The waffles were not good either. Bill comes, we toss in four credit cards. Shouldn't be difficult right? After one of my friend's card is charged, the remaining bill gets charged on my card (shoutout to Amex for texting me or else I probably wouldn't have known). My husband brought me here for Valentine's Day(our first time here). The service AND wait time was HORRIBLE !!! I'm pretty sure this wasn't their 1st rodeo. Our reservation was for 7:00pm. We Were seated momentarily right by the door, so it was freezing . The waiter finally came to take our order about 7:19. We got water around 7:45 and drinks about 8:15. We asked for a manager after seeing people that were there after we were seated get their food. About 8:45 we were moved to another section and assured that the GM was making our food and it would be out soon. Finally got it about 20-30 later. The lamb as burned, but my husband ate because we were starving. The oxtail were miniature and cold. The sides were good and the temperature was fine. We asked for a manager again. However, the food did not meet expectations; we ordered shrimp and grits, salmon bites with grits, and chicken & waffles. The dishes lacked flavor, and the fried chicken was quite dry and overcooked, according to one of my friends. While we may have visited on an off day, first impressions are important. The service was friendly, and fast! We were seated right away and spent less than an hour there, but also didn't feel rushed. The food was high priced, but so worth it! We got the STEAKS, the 14 oz NY strip, and they were so delicious! The asparagus were also so delicious, the definition of crisp tender. I really liked the layout and openness of this restaurant. The location is easy to find and conveniently situated in its shopping center. There's amble parking. Customer service was great, no complaints there. I do wish the menu had more variety. My friends and I went for brunch. A lot of the menu feels like variations of shrimp and grits, they just swamp the shrimp/protein for something else (i.e. fish, steak, etc.). Three of us ordered the shrimp and grits and my one friend ordered snapper and grits. The snapper came out lightly breaded and fried, which didn't make sense with that dish. We also didn't care for the gravy that appeared on our dishes. We were hoping for a little more flavor or kick in the dish, but it wasn't there. I was super excited to try this black owned business, it is new and an easy on the eyes addition to Prince George's county. The appetizers and drinks were so good. I got the beef empanadas and the house salad, gotta have a salad with every meal. The empanadas were decent but the sauce that came with it took them to another level. We happened upon this restaurant when searching for a home and I could not have been more pleased! Do yourself a favor and order the pork chops smothered in onions (on the brunch menu); the chops had to be an inch thick, the onions were so good I could have eaten them as a meal and the overall flavor was incredible. It was one of the best meals I have ever eaten (and I have clients with expensive taste so I have been treated to restaurants with Michelen stars)! We had the pleasure of speaking with the owner, who happened to be the chef that day, and got to hear about all the great new recipes he is looking forward to trying. This place has a lot of potential but the esthetics for what kind of an establishment I think they are going for needs a little bit more attention... He said it was good. I ordered the New York strip with the garlic sauce and my steak was perfect. My entree came with garlic mashed potatoes and creamed spinach, which both were flavorful and tasty! And we also added a side of the traditional mac & cheese. Yum!! For dessert I was torn between one of the cheese cakes and the peach bread pudding...the peach bread pudding was what we ended up going with and again- we were satisfied with everything tonight. I saw a Tik Tok by chimaeats entitled "5 New Upscale Black Owned Restaurants in the DMV". I attempted to make reservations on Sunday but they were booked. So when my friend invited me to Happy Hour last night, I was excited to see what this restaurant had to offer. I reviewed the dress code before arriving and they don't adhere to it, even the Hostess had on jeans. I was pleasantly surprised when we had reservations but they had seating at the bar and that reservations weren't needed. It seemed to be an office party happening with about 15-20 people. Other than that, it was empty. The decor was nothing that dazzled me or made me want to capture the moment. It was a quick lesson that Tic Tok, Instagram, and Facebook can fool you and make anything look alluring. I sat at the fairly empty bar for 15 minutes before being acknowledged or provided a menu, I had to speak up to get service from Castro. He was very focused on the "regulars" that frequent the restaurant. Luckily, the gentleman next to me was a "regular" and helped me hail Castro's attention. I was able to order a drink (BLVKCOW Punch) and it was good. When my friend arrived we placed our order. She and I shared appetizers from the Happy Hour Menu. We ordered the following: Shoe String Fries (crispy and good (note: I am not a fry person), BBQ Shrimp Skewers (Spicy but good), Crispy Parmesan Lamb Lollipops (Taste like veal chops or southern fried steak (which is chicken). Perhaps the brunch and main menu are better. Also, they add a 20% gratuity on the bill, which I find insulting. Especially catering to an ethnic clientele, which shows a lack of trust that we will tip correctly. Perhaps, that is why the service was not good because they don't have to work for their tips, it's automatically added to the bill. I went a second time after literally giving this restaurant accolades and bringing business. They have not only changed ownership and management but they have scaled down the quality of their offerings tremendously to cut cost. Today I ordered the lamb chops and were told that the truck has not delivered yet. I then attempted to order the truffle fries and was told they no longer serve those along with a huge portion of their signature cocktails on happy hour. For today I ordered the ox tail flatbread, buffalo cauliflower and two drinks one of which was a house red wine for a total of $71. I left my food and just paid my bill. The flatbread had dry overcooked little shreds of oxtail and no peppers to go along with it. The cauliflower you could not even cut it was underdone. I mentioned that there cook must have changed and was told the head cook is out sick. Again these were all signs that I was dissatisfied. Nahhh it was delicious (see pics!)!! My friends ordered the pork chops and red snapper. All were accompanied by unlimited cream of spinach and mashed potatoes. We also ordered the lobster Mac and cheese which was YUMMY!! Yikes I failed to mention that you could have your meat of choice prepared plain or with 4 different sauces. I don't like when people or places name themselves. I didn't like it when Kobe nicknamed himself "The Black Mamba" and I don't like that BLVCK COW named itself "upscale" .. Lol. A few things are inherent to upscale dining that can't be overlooked. First, it can't be in a strip mall and facing CVS and Texas Roadhouse. Two, never heard of an Upsale establishment charging my card $24 when making a reservation and I've eaten at a TON of Upcale restaurants. $20 was refunded once the actual bill came, still don't know where the other $4 went.. Lol. Three, where are the white linen table coverings and for damn sure you can't give out black plastic liquor store bags when you ask to take home your leftovers.. LOL OK, now that's out of the way, shall we continue. BLVCK COW is a very nice change of pace from the Bowie norm. I think they hit the spot on most of the menu items and it's priced just about right. Having two signature sides included with entrées is a very nice touch. I haven't been to any restaurant, upscale or lowscale that I can recall that only has one appetizer option which were the Jerk prawns.. Hmmmm.. I guess we'll have the prawns? Lol!! They were super tasty, however, I believe a tad over priced 4 for $24. The lamb chops however were delicious and for $38, that will surely be my go to meal at BLVCK COW. In addition to the mashed potatoes and creamed spinach which are included with the meal I ordered the Mac and Cheese and the asparagus. Everything was prepared and seasoned to perfection. My experience was truly 3.5 stars but I rounded up due to the newness and the potential. Our server was pleasant but definitely needed training. Seemed to be a bit overwhelmed and it was moderately busy. BLVCK COW does have a huge issue that's going to be a major problem the colder it gets. The front door opens right into the main dining area. First walk in the atmosphere was super sexy and great for a date night, music was nice and low enough to where I could hear it but not loud enough where I felt like I was yelling. It was a slow night so we got to experience how great our server was. She was so nice and checked on us regularly. I quite enjoyed my dining experience at Blvck Cow. I want to note that this location might come up (specifically) in Google as Brandywine, but it is actually in Bowie. Upon entering the restaurant, it gave me "lounge" vibes, but I was informed that it does not turn into a lounge/ club atmosphere towards the late evening. I will add that there is a nice size room in the rear for larger parties, which is a nice option. After arriving inside, I noticed there was a coat check, which was great because it was chilly outside. As I was seated, I was greeted by Edgar, our server who created a very hospitable experience. He was very knowledgeable and patient, as I reviewed the menu quite a few times. Regarding the menu, while there are a ton of food options, there are a lot of topping options and lots of ways to have your meat prepared which was a great attribute of the restaurant. I ordered the empanadas for an appetizer, which I enjoyed. I believe the appetizers can probably be shared as well as the entree sides. Because of the multiple preparation options, each dining experience is unique. I ordered the chicken prepared with the honey chipotle. It was rather flavorful but a bit spicy. The chicken was juicy, not dry and complimented the entree sides ( creamed spinach and garlic mashed potatoes). I do wish I had an option for green beans instead of the spinach. We also ordered the lobster Mac&Cheese, which was delicious. Regarding cocktails, the menu was a bit eclectic in names but are classic cocktails with a slight spin in some cases. The drink menu is quite extensive so you would have no trouble finding anything that's similar to what you like to drink. We ordered the a sangria and what would be comparable to a lemon drop martini ( the name escapes me). Overall, I will definitely be back for another great dining experience. It was great! I will note that the non-refundable reservation fee policy was a bit inconvenient f you have to change your reservation, even it you are just changing the time and not the day. Let me start by saying that you get to "walk the red carpet" while entering into this restaurant! We were immediately created by staff/server Kirk, as we approached, who then seated us. The Happy Hour Menu is full of savory dishes at great prices. My co-worker got the jerk shrimp flatbread and it was delicious because I'm such a great co-worker that I had to taste...lol! Also, it was a nice portioned size so she could not finish it all. She also ordered the classic martini with the cutest presentation. It's not a huge space but a decent size. Now to the food. My husband got the Cowboy Ribeye, which he enjoyed. He ordered medium and it was cooked perfectly. Their beef empanadas were delicious so much so I forgot to get a pic. What stood out the most was with almost every entrée menu option you can choose how it was prepared. For my entrée I got the escovitch red snapper which came with creamed spinach and mashed potatoes. It all was underwhelming. The mashed potatoes aesthetic through me off, they tasted ok. The creamed spinach was thick and very cheesy, I like my creamed spinach with a little balance. I didn't taste the spinach at all the cheese was over powering. The snapper was not well seasoned at all the best part was the escovitch veggies on top. I eat out to get a break from my own cooking but I walked away wishing I just cooked. The service was good, no complaints there. Our waitress and the manager were great, super attentive and they both seemed to care. Waited 2 hours on Valentine's Day for entrees that never came. we left and paid $47 for one appetizer and one drink. They even included gratuity! Our wing appetizer tasted freezer burnt and was cold. The couple next to us received cold food. Their steak wasn't cooked all the way. They waited one hour for them to bring it back out. When we couldn't use the bathroom because of a flood, we knew that was not the place for us! It's very upsetting because this was the second Valentine's Day we attempted to patron this restaurant. I expected more of a jerk-marinated effect, not shrimp with a sauce pour-over. For $42, the crab cakes were decent. No filler. Just pure crab meat...however, I think a bit more seasoning and spice was needed. The bed of corn was tasty. I enjoyed that. All entrées come with creamed spinach and mashed potatoes. The creamed spinach was good, but it wasn't hot when it delivered to the table. I didn't try the potatoes. All-in-all, BLVCK COW was a mediocre experience. On balance, Blvck Cow is a good choice for dinner and drinks in Bowie. Like every restaurant there are positive aspects and areas that can be enhanced. I am not a professional chef, restauranteur, nor a paid foodie (my "arm chair" restaurant critic wannabe reviews on Yelp aside). I did not understand the concept upon deciding to go, just assumed it would be similar to Mad Cow in Laurel which is its sister establishment. I loved the menu, prices, and vibe at Mad Cow, so I assumed it would be similar here with some tweaks. I encourage you to read about the concept and view the menu on the website prior to your visit to inform your own choice. On the positive side of the ledger, each entrée comes with a family size side of garlic mashed potatoes and parmesan creamed spinach included in its price allaying some of the sticker shock. However those are the only two choices so if one didn't eat potatoes or didn't have an affinity for cream spinach you were out of luck. The mashed potatoes were good, the creamed spinach was an add-on that no one in my party even wanted. Would that there were more options like steamed vegetables or grilled broccoli in lieu of the other two choices. I began with the island spice prawns in the curry preparation. The prawns were tasty and the curry broth was rich, however the prawns were a tad bit overcooked. Also they came out with the heads on, for many that is a delicacy but for me that was an instant turnoff and made the dish extremely messy to eat. It came with four medium to large prawns which seemed like a fair amount when viewed plated, but once the heads were removed seemed rather skimpy. The sticker shock of it costing $23 (appetizers are À la cart) added to my disappointment. The entrée salads seem like they would be the choice for me however there was no choice for a seafood protein, only steak. The vegetarian entrées also came paired with the same garlic mashed potatoes and parmesan creamed spinach. Maybe it would be nice to offer a vegan choice for an included side other than creamed spinach. The cauliflower steak might have been a good option as an entrée, but not at $25. Wild mushrooms were offered as a family style side dish, however they are $17, so I did not get them. I ordered the pommes frites, which were okay, but took way too long to come out. If you like shoestring fries, this is the choice for you. I do not eat red meat, but my colleague were pleased with the perfectly grilled Filet Mignon. Reasonable price too at $37. BC seems to have aspirations as a steakhouse with a new American/Caribbean flair, and prices to match. That is okay, and in fact desirable for the area. A $92 Tomahawk Ribeye (32 ounces) speaks to those aspirations. During my visit I fell into the bad habit of wishing the menu had some of my favorites from Mad Cow, like thr BYO burger (choice of Turkey, beef, veggie, or impossible burger as the protein). The menu certainly nods to Caribbean cuisine but not with the same deep genuflect as the menu at Mad Cow. I am not one for gimmicks when it comes to my dining experiences but to each their own. To me it seemed over the top to have a red carpet and velvet rope leading to the entrance. There seem to be a bouncer at the host stand in addition to the hostess, mind you I went after work around 6:00. He was certainly serious although not surly but it was a bit off putting just for a simple dinner. The exterior is really weird as it appeared that the place was closed because the windows are heavily tinted. The interior is beautifully appointed, very similar to Timothy Dean's which was the last occupant of the space. However, the individual chairs were hard and very uncomfortable. The ambience felt good with great lighting with a eclectic mix of music wafting around the space at a loud but not too loud decibel. The service staff were friendly and attentive, even if some items took too long to arrive at the table. As a general matter, I add a generous gratuity commiserate with the service and overall quality. So, it vexes me when establishments automatically add the gratuity as they do here. To be fair, the manager did discount the bill by 10%, without me even raising an issue, because of some of the food service delays. That is a wonderful sign and bodes well that managers see an issue and make it right, without even having to be asked. The old-fashion that was made at the bar seemed watered down from all the ice if they added. It was $18, so yeah I will stick to a soft drink next time. Others had a martini and two of their specialty cocktails. They were pleased with the libations. All in all I would return, now that I understand what the concept is and why the prices are what they are. Information is power, so I suggest checking their website, reading the reviews, or do a reconnaissance mission to the place. read more

After a long anticipated wait, I was super excited to come here to enjoy a fine dining experience at MCG-Laurel's rich cousin's house. My friends and I love Mad Cow Grill (Laurel) and this was something that we were looking forward to since its announcement! We made our reservations in advance for 5pm. We arrived early and sat in our car until we thought they were opening and it was about 4:57pm when we began walking up to the door. We were greeted by two gentlemen pulling out the red carpet and red ropes for the entrance we were told to come back (yes, 180 seconds before officially opening). Definitely could have been greeted and asked to step inside to wait instead of shooing us away for a couple of minutes...literally. By the time we turned around and got to our car door, a mere 30ft away, he was flagging us down to come in. That was a little off-putting considering when we returned there were already people inside having drinks. Not sure what that was all about. Once we were seated, we reviewed the menu. Of course, we had expectations of the prices being much more than what we're used to at MCG-Laurel. Not a problem. With that being said, we wished there was a little more variety in the sides. Every entree came with the SAME SIDES: Garlic mashed potatoes and Parmesan creamed spinach. I do want to mention that they were both cold the first time. The waiter came back promptly with a new batch of both. The other sides were presented in a family-style manner. We ordered the traditional Mac and cheese, although they brought us Lobster Mac instead. Now that was a big hit with us! Very yummy! Hopefully once it is fully opened, we get a little more flexibility with menu choices. For appetizers, we chose the Jerk Prawns- they were a tab bit overcooked which made them mushy. They have potential. I see it. I have hope for them. Main dish- I ordered the "South Padre Island" Red Snapper Filet in Escovitch (with previously mentioned sides) and my friend ordered the Chilean Seabass in their Signature Roasted Garlic Sauce. We were both pleased with our fish. Succulent and full of flavor. For dessert, we tried the sweet potato cheesecake. I had a bite and it was delicious. If you have a sweet tooth, this is the pick for you based on my friend's honest review. The cons about our visit was that for some reason the woman collecting glasses and dishes continued to hover around our table to ask whether we were finished with whatever we were eating. At one point, my friend rushed to finished his last bite of spinach and potatoes finished because she had returned less than a couple minutes since she last asked us if we were done. While this may be appreciated by other customers or during times of high volume, the establishment was nowhere near full and we were enjoying our meals and in conversation. It was just a constant interruption. Another con was dress code. Not that I had to adhere to the dress code, but that it was not enforced. I observed quite a few women enter with shorts (after 5pm), slides, and other attire deemed inappropriate for the restaurant's fine dining experience. I was disappointed because not only we were shooed away to wait 3 minutes prior to entering only to be met with folks already inside, but then being joined in this self-proclaimed "fine dining" restaurant by people who just strolled in casually with inappropriate clothes. To establish and maintain that level of elegance, things should be consistent and enforced across the board. Lastly, and this is just an observation, the waiters and staff kept mentioning that "we are still in the process of opening and getting everything ordered and stocked". As a customer, this is a little disappointing because it felt like the opening was rushed with things being unavailable. For example: l asked for hot water with lemon. He took my order and came back and said "we don't have those cups (tea cups) and because we're in the opening phases, we would not be able to make you hot water anyway". I was totally confused. I didn't ask any questions and settled for regular water. All in all, the experience wasn't horrible, just.. ya know - regular. Our expectations were high and the experience was okay. Food was VERY GOOD (minus the Prawns, but they'll get there...I am sure), but the EXPERIENCE, that is what had a bigger impression on us and it was average. Hopefully in the near further the outside is jazzed up a little bit. It kind of looks like an unoccupied building with the dark tint. Although it's beautiful on the inside, the outside does not speak volumes about the restaurant and what you all are trying to convey. Food and cocktails were good, but overpriced. Service was very slow, especially given the small crowd and apparently sufficient staffing. However, despite the service being slow, our server was very pleasant, accommodating and made solid recommendations based on preferences my friends and I expressed. I'm not even vegan, but for some reason I ordered the curry coconut cauliflower and it was amazing! Portion was generous and the accompanying sides, creamed spinach and mashed potatoes were tasty. This restaurant is either the third or fourth restaurant in this location. The interior decor is sleek and elegant. The menu is pretty simple and is fairly expensive compared to other restaurant options in the nearby area. The drinks were good. Several items that we were served family style were extremely salty. We were given a dessert menu and ordered options only to be told that was the wrong menu and they didn't have those options available. The crab cake meal was fairly expensive and it was full of filler and definitely not worth the price. I will give this place another try. I hear that the brunch is good. read more

Some friends and I randomly chose to eat here for our monthly brunch. Let's start with saying the ambiance and our server Alex were both great. We all came hungry and ready to eat and unfortunately left the same way. The food was underwhelming to say the least. I ordered smothered pork chop over grits. The pork chop was tough and it was very under seasoned. There was no actual tase to it at all. The grits had a fishy taste to them. Like maybe they were cooked in something that had fish in it prior to. The gravy was quite tasty, but lukewarm at best. So the plate for me was a bust. We also got what they call hot honey biscuits. I got out of a meeting nearby and I wanted to stop by and support a local black-owned business. I use to live in silver spring so I am familiar with the brand and the owner. I was a big fan of the mad cow in Laurel. I checked the hours and they seemed to be open. Once I Parked and walked into the door I was immediately stopped and told that this was a upscale place that didn't allow sweat pants. I was wearing an Adidas sweatsuit. But as a looked around I saw a woman with sweatpants at the bar and other people in not formal attire. It was early around 4:30 so I asked for a little leniency due to my ignorance of the dress code. He went and asked the owner or manager and they allowed me to sit at the bar. I was grateful and appreciative. I ordered a few drinks and a few apps everything was flavorful and tasty. They were small bites and I only tried the Hh menu as I was not in proper attire for a full experience. I enjoyed the staff and the food and I hope to come back and continue to support. read more
