I got out of a meeting nearby and I wanted to stop by and support a local black-owned business. I use to live in silver spring so I am familiar with the brand and the owner. I was a big fan of the mad cow in Laurel. I checked the hours and they seemed to be open. Once I Parked and walked into the door I was immediately stopped and told that this was a upscale place that didn't allow sweat pants. I was wearing an Adidas sweatsuit. But as a looked around I saw a woman with sweatpants at the bar and other people in not formal attire. It was early around 4:30 so I asked for a little leniency due to my ignorance of the dress code. He went and asked the owner or manager and they allowed me to sit at the bar. I was grateful and appreciative. I ordered a few drinks and a few apps everything was flavorful and tasty. They were small bites and I only tried the Hh menu as I was not in proper attire for a full experience. I enjoyed the staff and the food and I hope to come back and continue to support. read more

This place has been on my must try restaurant list for quite some time. We went for brunch and unfortunately I was not impressed. Let's start with the pros.... We had a large party and our waitress was very patient with us. She was thorough and knew the menu very well. The restaurant is also very nice on the inside and the music was a vibe! As for the cons... the food was not great to me and I noticed a lot of people still had food on their plates when they cleared the table. The shrimp and grits were not good. It was bland and lacking flavor. The honey biscuits were thick and DRY. And they didn't have jam or jelly to put on the biscuits. Also it took forever to get our drinks and food once we ordered. This was my first time trying Blvck Cow for takeout and it wasn't a great experience. I ordered the mac and cheese and a vegetable mix. The vegetables were definitely the saving grace - they were cooked well and flavorful. However, the mac and cheese was a let down. It seemed like a cheese sauce was used, which can be delicious, but in this case, it lacked any real depth of flavor. On top of that, it was very soupy and there were even some unmelted cheese pieces throughout. For the price, the portion size on the vegetables was disappointing, especially considering the lackluster mac and cheese. Unfortunately, I didn't feel like I got my money's worth on this visit. The hostesses at the front met me with a smile and offered me a seat on a nearby bench while I waited for my +1. They were welcoming and personable. Definitely a plus. We ended the night with dessert and decided to share the cinnamon churro ice cream sandwich..it should be a sin how good it was! My friend got a brunch reservation... and it goes until 5:00 on Sundays, whew! That's pretty nice! I got there right at 1:30 when our reservation was, and the two others were right behind me. I gotta say, it took us a good 30 minutes to get seated. There were a bunch of empty tables, but I guess there wasn't a server for them... but I would've appreciated some sort of heads up on that. Anyways, we got seated, got our water and started ordering. I got the bottomless mimosas, flavored with mango, pineapple & orange (yum!). $31 is a little higher than I typically pay, but it's my birthday month, so I do what I want :). The food menu had some great sounding options on it... it wasn't on the menu, but the curry chicken pot pie was an option. It was tempting, but I decided on the smoked salmon and lox croissant. So we waited, and before long three plates came -- two with chicken & waffles that my friends got, and one with ahi tuna tacos... hey! That wasn't my order. It was an error on their end, which they apologized for, all good! When the croissant did come... it was quite delicious! So I didn't regret that decision at all. The salmon, the lox, the cream, the texture of the croissant... it was great, but I wasn't full, so I got turkey sausage and potato hash too. I brought my nephew for his Birthday he turned 21. As a supportive and loving Auntie I wanted him to have the best experience ever. I heard about a new Black owned restaurant opening in Bowie so my husband suggested we try it for our anniversary. It is owned by the same people who opened the Mad Cow Grill. When you make a reservation they charge $10/person plus a $4 service fee. The $10/person goes towards the bill as a dining credit. The set up is nice when you walk in. There's a bar straight forward with high table seating to the right and a dining room area to the left. There's also seating in a room in the back but it wasn't open. It was pretty cold out on January 6th so everytime the door opened a gush of cold air came in and it stayed since the heat wasn't blowing. Everyone in the dining area was freezing! Diners either had their coats on or draped over their legs. They serve 2 family style sides (mashed potatoes and creamed spinach) with most entrees. Our waitress forgot to bring us ours so we didn't get it until we almost done eating. The mashed potatoes were bland but the creamed spinach was good. We both got the NY strip and the steaks were cooked well. The couple beside us ordered the Ital stew. The wife added mushroom and she said the charged $16 to do so. These weren't truffles. They were regular button mushrooms. Ridiculous! I find the place to be pretty overpriced. The cocktails were all $16-20 and getting liquor neat was ridiculous (a Mount Gay XO was $90 for example). The hostesses were super friendly, smiley, and happy to assist upon entry and exit. We were seated & quickly greeted by Marilu our server, who was awesome. Now onto the food, we went with the Chipotle Beef Empanadas to start which were fluffy and flavorful with a kick.. ok not too shabby I thought to myself. For entrees, I had the Rasta Pasta and my guest had the vegetable stew. The pasta was cheesy with seafood galore. I could appreciate how some Rasta Pastas are super oily but this wasn't but definitely could've used some seasoning. Now the vegetable stew was superb, when I sampled hers I wish I ordered that or the lamb chops instead. The mandatory family style sides of creamed spinach & mashed potatoes were plentiful and tasty. Both entrees, sides, and drinks made the two top table uncomfortably tight with one wrong move an accident was waiting to happen. Last night, I waited for an hour before being served and my order was inedible. I was in a party of five friends celebrating birthdays at a black-owned restaurant during Black History Month. Twice, I reminded the waitress to bring me my order. Meanwhile, other people were seated at the table next to us, were served full meals with beverages, ate and left before I was finally served. Waitress error. Waitress's apology accepted. Asked to speak to the manager. CRICKETS for 30 minutes. The restaurant hostess said she was the assistant manager and asked if she could help. Again, I asked to speak to the manager. Then a man finally came to our table, claimed to be the manager but refused to give me his name. After telling the "manager" how I felt about paying for unacceptable service, he claimed he was unaware of the problem as it was occurring, and picked up a phone as if to call the police if I didn't pay. Then, he brought out a bill on which a pre calculated 22% gratuity was already added and a 25% discount subtracted. Net change- almost $0. He also offered us some gift cards which we did not accept, since we have no intention of patronizing Blvck Cow ever again. I asked the owner, who was then in the kitchen, to make proper amends for the totally unacceptable service. He asked me to give them another chance, because he was a new owner. I put cash in the owner's hand for the bill with the 25% discount and no gratuity, letting him know the bill wasn't my main concern, and giving him the chance to apologize and comp our bill. He took the money, offered neither an apology nor any meaningful adjustment to our bill. I told him I gave him much more than he deserved. If you want your order served after a reasonable turnaround time ...DON'T DO BUSINESS WITH BLVCK COW. If you want management and owners to take meaningful corrective action, when you inform them about the poor service...DON'T DO BUSINESS WITH BLVCK COW. They've changed their menu and honestly can no longer be considered a steak house because they only have one steak on the new menu. They got rid of many of their signature dishes, including the lobster mac n' cheese. The food was below average, and the appetizer we ordered (mini lobster rolls) came out without the sauce and completely dry. Our server was mortified at the presentation. The entrees were subpar as well. My friend ordered the chicken marsala which was flavorless and didn't even resemble a marsala sauce. I ordered the flounder, which the server recommended. The flounder was okay, a little on the salty side, but extremely small portions. Stopped by BLVCK cow for an impromptu Friday night date night and was pleased with my experience. My partner and I heard a lot of recent buzz about this place and after looking over the menu we're excited to check it out. For cocktails we ordered the Garden of Eden and One in a Million (x2.) Both drinks were refreshing, and tasty with complementary flavors. We started our meal by sharing a Caesar salad, and for entrees my partner ordered the ribeye & I ordered the lamb chops. Our entrees as well as the mashed potatoes/creamed spinach sides were delicious. My boyfriend's ribeye was a healthy size. The meats of both entrees were seasoned really well. I ordered the rosemary sauce with the chips but will probably go without ordering sauce in the future because it's really not needed with the way the meats are seasoned. (Pro tip: if you do order a sauce, one is big enough to serve multiple people so I don't believe each person needs to order one). the lamb chops were 1/2 rack with the order, but they were on the smaller size. For dessert, we had our eyes set on the bread pudding but unfortunately they just ran out so we got the cheesecake instead. Overall, every dish was great. I would definitely return. The food took a while to reach our table- a party of 10 however, the simplest ordered item (pancakes) for a child never arrived. After a while, we were notified they weren't available. The server suggested waffles and once again, we were told bc the kitchen closed, they weren't available. Neither did they have thick cut bacon, turkey sausage, apple juice or biscuits. A Shirley temple was also returned. There was definitely a kitchen inventory major issue. A gift card was provided and wings were ordered once the kitchen reopened, in which I was charged $3 for fees. I surrendered the entire gc. I'm unsure if I'll ever return.
