Keep in mind most of the food is fried. I tend to not eat fried food so choices were limited. We ordered the mahi tacos and enjoyed them. Overall, it was a nice experience. Stayed at a rental close by and had a chance to come here a couple times. It's a restaurant downstairs with a bar upstairs and plenty of bay views to enjoy. It is NOT a dining destination by any means but as many Yelpers have said, "it has tons of potential". You have to come with realistic expectations. Long wait times, low staff, etc are to be expected. So chill! First visit was just drinks with friends on the huge patio for the sunset views. The deck needs some renovations, but for now, as you sit on the broken bench enjoying drinks you fetched from the friendly bartender inside, you can't help but look around and discuss the potential this place has. We really did enjoy our rum runners and the sunset. The drinks were good and under $7 if I remember and the views were awesome! It was a Tuesday night and it was just our party of 4 on the patio. Oh well, we were happy. Second visit was date night with just the wife. We actually ordered some food and again sat outside, by ourselves, which was fine with us. The weather was perfect and the sun was setting so the views were once again spectacular. From the reviews I was not expecting the food to be anything more than bar food so again our expectations were pretty low. But I must say, the food was actually pretty bomb! We loved the onion rings and the recommended Cilantro Chicken Tacos were delicious! The bartender was sweet but could clearly use some help back there. Staffing is an issue everywhere and the effects could be felt during both of our visits. Yes, this place has A LOT TO IMPROVE ON, but I believe you also have to highlight places when they surprise you. And the boathouse definitely did that during our second visit. I have always been a big fan of the boathouse so I wanted my family to join us while we were on vacation. We got there second shift had not shown up so the server got us our drinks and menus while we waited. We placed our orders for food and happy hour & the food came out and it was good as always. The staff left much to be desired. The entire time I felt like we were bothering them to get additional drinks or silverware. I am sad it wasn't a good experience. we had 11 people on our party but we tried very hard not tobe demanding. I think next time we will skip the boat house due to this experience and start looking for a new place to enjoy a pricey meal. We had 11 in our party with six of us drinking ONE adult beverage each. We ate happy hour foods plus a few meals. the tab was almost 4 bills including gratuity. She didn't deserve the gratuity based on the service provided. They are also not stingy with the tartar sauce, which is not the case with some restaurants (looking at you Pappadeaux) Price was reasonable. We love to go here because it is close to our condo. This place has so much potential and in its day was probably a great place, but it's obvious the owners have let it go! The outside sign has lights burnt out and the entry was nasty looking. We went in anyway to have a drink and check it out further and at least give it a chance. I ventured out to Boathouse Bar & Grill on a cold Saturday evening. I kept my expectations low because I read a lot of not so good reviews. So why then did I even bother to try it out you ask? I have seen on Padre Island Facebook pages mentions that the service is not so good, but the food is always been good. The neighborhood groups were not wrong. It was really slow at 7:30 pm on a Saturday mind you it was pretty cold by Texas Gulf Coast standards. I ordered an Old Fashioned and that's something I know a little bit about and when the bartender put it all in a glass and shook it like. Margarita I knew it wasn't gonna be good, it was not good. I did order a cup of gumbo and it was alright I would order it again. For my entree I ordered the stuffed shrimp plate and it was pretty good too, I would order the entree again. Ambiance....I'm sure it's livelier in the warmer months so the staff won't be standing around talking to each other. I get it they were slow. Off the beaten path was this quiet little bar. At least it was when we stopped in at 2:30 p.m. on a weekday just in time for the start of happy hour! They have these huge chicken poppers, handmade and perfectly cooked, crunchy, and gooey cheesy! The onion rings are thickly battered, so very crispy and delish. At one point, we were the only ones there (if you don't count the blackbirds who wanted nibbles) and really enjoyed the shady deck with water view. Took an hour to get our food. Only 2 other people in the restaurant. Food was cold. My mani mani was supposed to have a fruit salsa. They, when I requested my topping, brought out some nasty bell pepper topping. Frozen margaritas were half ice. My husband's corn on the cob was so cold the butter they put on it stayed solid. Let me preface by saying that I work in the service industry and I try to be as lenient and sensitive as I can to other industry workers and establishments. HOWEVER, I cannot say anything positive about this place except for Eric's (the bartender) attitude. He was super nice. Our waitress was terrible. She never checked on us. when we finally got our food, after an hour wait - with no warning by the way- I had asked lemon for my fish and she forgot it. By the time she came back around, my fish was more cold, colder than what it came out at. She offered to get me more fish, but I didn't want to be stuck waiting for another hour. The food was awful. The fish and chips came out cold . DO NOT get the cucumber salad, it looks more like a soup that I'm sure even inmates wouldn't eat. We were never given any courtesy warning on the food wait time. If you know you have one cook, give your customers the common courtesy of wait time. They were also out of peel n eat shrimp and mashed potatoes. They were not even busy at the time we ordered. There's also mold on the ceiling. Lastly, the restroom had an overflowing toilet. Its sad because this place has so much potential, if it had the right owners. The management is the worst. The service was good, the people were friendly, and the decorations and big windows were very aesthetically pleasing, but the food was questionable. We got the sampler and it was tasty, but then the Bacon Wrapped Shrimp tasted funny...I thought, perhaps I am just not a bacon fan, but the bacon was over cooked on the outside and still raw on the inside, which really turned my stomach. The line of people at the door that was not being seated was growing and at least 5 families of 4 or more people ended up walking out after not getting seated. Our chips and drinks still did not arrive; though the people sitting at the bar got their drinks before us; which is what broke the camels back. The management and/or ownership should have been in there assisting. The poor lone-wolf waitress was doing what she could, but this place and day was an abysmal leadership failure. We waited an obscene amount of time for our food. At the point I was going to offer to merely pay for our appetizer then leave, we were regaled by obscenities loudly emanating from the kitchen. A young African American fellow stormed out, made a few runs between the kitchen and the outdoors, then clocked out. Of note, there were several ladies and young children that were serenaded with f-bombs. Quite the classy experience. Our first order delivery attempt was for another table - an elderly couple had walked out. When our order finally arrived, my wife's burger was missing components, my cheesesteak was cold, and our onion rings too. To make matters worse, my wife ordered a veggie burger and got a regular beef one. Whilst all of this transpired, we overheard a table complaining about well over an hour wait for their food. All in all a horrible dining experience that led me to both whip out the AMEX & zero tip. Post-meal indigestion has given me no reason to regret that decision. Divy place with a number of regulars who sit outside on the patio and smoke. The night we went, there was a DJ who played some good music. It was ruined by the occasional wannabe karaoke singer who would viciously grab the mic as if they were going into the top ten on American Idol. Out of tune, out of tempo and quickly approaching a state of drunkenness. This is what we dealt with since service was on the slower side. Bartender and waitstaff don't care if you're visiting and they know who is local and who is not. Service is not great by any means as they toss your ordered food on your table and run off. We sat outside on the patio and found out we needed to order from the bar. The only person the bartender cared about were her regulars. If you're in your 20's and coming down to Padre Island for Spring Break or with your buddies, by all means, this place is for you. Otherwise if you're a grown adult who wants to spend time with your spouse or whoever and chat it up, skip this place. Nothing about this place says to come back and we will be more than happy to honor that request. read more
