My husband and I ate at Captain's Diner a few days ago and the food was delicious. We had the You-Peel-Em shrimp. A half a pound was plenty for two people. We also had stuffed mushrooms that were huge and crispy and moist on the inside. A generous portion of fried shrimp included fries. All was very good. We took half home! Crazy good food, crazy nice staff, big open dining area with a nice looking bar area. It has both tables and booths. My wife and I had dinner here and really enjoyed our meals. The menu has a lot of variety and choices including fresh fish and steaks. They have a nice selection of drinks and beers. We both had a Perfect Marg no salt on the rocks. They both came with two limes. They were very tasty and resonably priced. My wife had the Nueces Bay which is flounder, shrimp, crab with a wine butter sauce. She got the vegi's of the day and rice as her side. She loved it, everything was very good. I had the Stuffed Flounder with rice and fried okra. The stuffed flounder was grilled with the seafood stuffing. I really enjoyed this also. Was on the island for a doctor's appointment and decided to try this place for lunch and so glad we did. We had Melody as a server and service was exceptional. Hubs tried the Greek burger and I ordered the ANC chicken sandwich. He had sweet potato fries and I had the onion strings. Let me say my sandwich was great. Huge portion of chicken, avocados and bacon. Could only eat half. Hubs said the Greek burger was amazing and that the ground beef was super juicy and tasty. The portions on the onion strings and fries were HUGE, way too big like enough for a team. lol. But everything was really good. Service was great. They bring out fresh rolls to the table after you order your drinks. The menu is very straightforward and has exactly what you want. My daughter and I got lunch while my hubby opted for breakfast since it was about 10:45 when got there. The shrimp poboy was really good...seasoned and lots of pickles, tomato and lettuce. I don't know if they make the hoagie inhouse or not but it was toasted and was sooo good. The tarter sauce comes on the side. So we have tried several dinner items and they never miss. The food is all so good. If I had to pick a favorite I would pick anything from the menu lol. Ok we loved the Greek salmon, mushroom burger and New York strip. But it's all good. And the diner atmosphere feels comfortable to dine in. Sunday morning breakfast stop and wasn't that busy which was great. Got sat right away in a booth. Service was prompt and friendly. Food was tasty and only issue was the side of ham came out after the rest of the meal. Large portions for the two eggs and French toast. Eggs were scrambled well and loved the hash browns. What a great surprise! We loved Captain's Diner. It was recommended to us by a friend who had recently discovered it. Every employee was super friendly and the food was spectacular. We started with wonderful drinks recommended by our waitress, then had calamari, crab cakes, onion rings, Greek Salmon, blackened salmon and a burger. The portions were big, the food was served hot and everything was flavored like it was homemade. Also our waitress, Gabby, could not have been more pleasant. I highly recommend if you are looking for great seafood at a reasonable price. The staff is all very kind. To start with we got a half pound of peel your own shrimp. The shrimp were very large and fresh. It seemed like more than a half pound. I even took some home. For the main course it ordered Greek Salmon with 2 sides AND salad or soup. Tonight the soup was shrimp bisque. Very very good soup. The Greek Salmon was very good as well. My husband got the Nueces Flounder, which was good as well. My husband and I came by for dinner around 6 pm yesterday, and we seemed to have hit the perfect time. There was a brief wait, but shortly after we checked in, a lot of families were coming in to get on the wait list. There were several large groups, and the restaurant is quite the hole-in-the-wall place. The inside is quite vintage with an old-timey feel. We loved the old celebrity photos on the wall. I ordered the grilled shrimp with steamed broccoli (veggie of the day) and a baked potato. My husband had the grilled salmon with rice pilaf and broccoli. Ordered a stuffed flounder special in what is supposed to be a sea food restaurant on North Padre Island. It took 40 minutes because the dish was a frozen dish prepared elsewhere. I do not understand what the hype is about this place or why it is so busy! The food is absolutely disgusting! I had the captains platter and I am unsure of what this stuffed crab was, but that is the most awful stuffed crab that I've ever had in my life. Whatever seasoning used is terrifying. The flounder was awful. I was unable to break the edges off and it was more like rubber. And I'm unsure what the batter is on the fish but again it was terrible. My daughter ordered the fried shrimp pasta, and couldn't even eat her plate. Our waitress was preoccupied with her tables inside rather than our table outside on the patio. You tend to be forgotten if you're on the patio. We had a table of eight and getting refills for drinks was horrible. We had to wait over a half an hour for our ticket and that was with me requesting it. They do add gratuity for large parties. We were first time Customers and we were so glad that we found this local home style seafood restaurant with a good amount of space and tables with staff to serve them. The restaurant is also nicely decorated with historical photos of the island not over done with neon signage. The menu provide various selections and are well priced for the ample portions served. Our waitress by the name of Gabby was just fantastic always stoping to check on us and offering if we needed anything plus she was very knowledgeable of the food and the history of the restaurant. For starters we had the delicious crab cakes and I mean 5 of them not 2 or 3. We then had the Shrimp plater grilled and a Seafood salad both were delicious .. overall we're delighted and will certainly be stopping by again to try the other items on the menu when visiting our favorite White Cap Beach. read more

Previously gave this place a 5 star. But went in this visit. Told the waiter I was allergic to tomatoes. So he turned around and put tomatoes on my salad and then didn't even bother to tell me the vegetable of the day had tomatoes in it so I wasn't able to eat my vegetable and then when it came around time to the bill and charging they added three dollars between the bill and paying I will show pictures for an example. Just starting by saying the Greek burger was amazing. Only suggestion would be by adding lamb meat into the patty. Was defiantly a better burger than Ithe fancy similar burger in Vegas! First and last time here. Started off with being told 30 minute wait for 8 and ended up being much longer. Fine that's okay whatever but we get seated and the atmosphere was off customers looked irritated going up to waitresses asking about food asking for refills had even seen a couple want to walk out but was promised there food was done and they ended up waiting another 25 minutes. Our food took about 50 minutes to come out we had ordered 5 plates, food was cold and not worth the wait. At this point we were just ready to go and of course we get our ticket and our ticket was wrong and that took another 15 minutes to correct because a manager had to correct it. So yeah never again. If you are looking for great food and awesome service, look no further. I was in town from the Midwest and was looking for fresh seafood. I had looked at several other places online and they all seemed like they were trying to be flashy or something special. This place said simply fresh seafood to me so I thought I would try it. Glad I did. Started with a cup of gumbo. OMG!!! This is what gumbo is supposed to be. Dark, and lots of flavor. Each bite begged for another. I ordered the seafood platter, because I couldn't decide. Everything was absolutely wonderful!! No cocktail or tarter sauce needed. The taste of the shrimp and flounder did not need it. I am not normally a fan of stuffed crab. I ate it all and wished there was more. Enough about the food, time to rave about the staff! The service was excellent!! Gabby was my waitress. She was friendly, checked on me regularly, my "real" sweet tea was never empty, and even took the time to chat a little. All the staff seemed to enjoy working there and worked great together.
