3 solid stars. The food is good. I came here about 2 Sundays ago when my eyes were bigger than my stomach. I ordered mad food and only ate half of it. I was going to order French toast but the pictures didn't look appetizing. So I ordered a waffle, how can you go wrong with a waffle. I was super surprised at how delicious it was. The grits were surprisingly good and the eggs were too. I thought I ordered hash browns and bacon but it never came out. They give you an enormous amount of toast with your meal. I wanted some strawberry jam but was given marmalade instead. I didn't eat the toast. Overall, I came on a busy Sunday so the food was slow to get to me. However, I was seated fast, the waiter was nice and accommodating and the food was good. This was my first time at this location and will likely be back sometime in the future. Not a great experience for me at B&E. While I would have loved to give a rave review to a local diner who has to compete with chain restaurants my experience won't allow me. The service is not the greatest and the food was only average. There is no waiting list system or staff to facilitate the arrival of new customers, so guest pretty much have to figure it out amongst themselves. This system is not effective especially since there are two separate doors to enter the establishment. There was some contention with my party and another customer. I would have preferred the staff to help instead of me getting into a spat with another customer about who was next. I don't think he was expecting to run up against a relentless New Yorker. After seating myself we waited, and waited and waited for a server to take our order. No one arrived, I had to leave my table to ask for service. Our food took a long time to come out, when we inquired we were told "honey there is a lot of dishes waiting" not so comforting for hungry patrons. When the food finally arrived the coffee tasted awful however the food slightly better, average at best. Doubt I would recommend this diner to others hopefully my experience was isolated. read more

Still think this place is good but have to downgrade a star for their new policy. Apparently at all locations for takeout they're now requiring you to provide your credit card information over the phone instead of you being able to pay when you arrive. From what I was told this is due largely to no-shows and the fact that people are getting confused about the various locations (i.e., ordering from one Bob & Edith's location and trying to pick up from another) which seems to have resulted at times in $$$ in lost sales due to prepared orders not getting picked up. I understand the problem from the restaurant's viewpoint but that's probably an issue better communication from the server taking the phone order could resolve. The new policy is inconvenient and potentially unsafe (in terms of providing credit card info over the phone) so will likely significantly reduce or stop doing takeout orders completely at this restaurant unfortunately... read more

Bob & Edith's Diner makes no exception to the "General Golden Rule of Diner's"....it's your classic diner that's long on menu items and short on parking! This place is very popular with the locals to the Crystal City/Arlington VA area. I came here on a Saturday morning with some friends. The place was packed. There was a line to get in but seating people went fairly quickly; considering the size of the restaurant. We were only in the line for about 10 minutes, if that. The Manager on duty and the staff were very accommodating and friendly. Once inside, the vibe is casual and the place looks somewhat like a throwback to the '50's! It's small but comfortable enough, bright and clean-looking. One thing I can say about this location for sure, is that the service and food is served extremely fast! I ordered a Western Omelette with Corned-Beef Hash & Grit's! Oh!...And, Sausage Patties, Toast & a large OJ. Yes, that was all for me! I am GA country boy that likes to eat and grits must accompany everything! I ordered all of this and in 8-10 minutes flat...plates of food was already flying back to my face. Talk about the Mickey "D's" drive-thru process of Diners....this place was it!! I asked for the corned beef hash to be cooked and fried hard...and whomever was the cook on duty did not disappoint. Most places screw that request up every time. Everything was cooked and prepared well....and most importantly tasty and served hot. Everyone else in my party enjoyed their food too. The portions were more than enough food. I can honestly say we all left out of there full and with a pot-belly! I will add a quick note of mention that although the food was good....it was a bit more expensive, compared to other Diner spots I frequent around the DMV. My bill came out to roughly $16 bones...for only standard breakfast food items?! Looking at that kind of check...made me extra glad that I cleaned my plates bone-dry and did not waste a crumb. In all, this is a great place for breakfast or a good meal when you need to eat and go. No complaints with my visit and experience. This place is a legit diner at legit diner prices so no crazy expensive DC fare here. They have a breakfast menu and a lunch/dinner one but they're open 24/7 and I'm pretty sure you can get anything anytime. I had the chicken fried steak which was very tasty and not too greasy or heavily breaded, it went well with the sausage gravy. The hash browns were top notch too and were the thin type like they have at Waffle House. The apple sauce was chunkier than most places and different than the kind you usually get out of a jar. It also came with a huge dinner roll. This isn't DC "foodie" stuff or health food, it's just tasty diner fare. This place is just what you'd want and expect in a diner, cheap and tasty food, fast service, and always open. I'll be back here to also try breakfast or maybe some pie. read more

I live within walking distance of the original Bob & Edith's. It's an old trustworthy place to get exactly what you paid for. Nothing is spectacular, but it always hits the spot when you want diner food. We wanted to try this Crystal City location just to have a comparison to the Columbia Pike location. Parking is more ample, and the restaurant itself is bigger. It's probably nice for the business too that they're pretty close to the Crystal City metro station. Food is pretty much the same quality. I had to give it lower stars because of the service. It was pretty empty, yet it took such a long time for our orders, and even longer to get the food. Asked for a recommendation and ended up with a pie called the grand slam (which isnt listed btw). And it was a Grand Slam!!! Such an amazing pie. The other food we had was french toast which I asked for chocolate chips and they didnt put them in no big deal but then when you charge for something I didnt have thats a problem. But they were good about voiding it. Just read your receipts folks. Had pancakes and it was just wholesome butteriness!!! All around good service and great pies. Walked in, server said take any open table that was clean...we decided to sit outside and apparently they don't have dedicated servers for the outside dining and the servers have some tables inside and out...but if the server is not paying attention to the rotation, you could be sitting there a while with no service...while others get seated after and get served first. And the first server that was helping us was not friendly and got my order wrong. The person who took over after they figured out who was serving us, it was bit better. Food and atmosphere was decent but the customer service (or lack thereof) was the biggest issue for me. One particular member of the staff practically stared our table down the entire meal. I was the last one to finish my food. While chewing my last bite, the person waiting on our table came and cleared everything away in one fell swoop! Food I Ate: Veggie Omelet, it was pretty good. Very flavorful, and cheesy. Decent size as well. I give it a 9. Hashbrowns: I am a hashbrown guy and these were the worst I have ever had. Zero flavor. I give it a 2. Wheat and white toast: I normally do not grade toast, because how can you screw up toast? Guess what, they did and must have used the best unflavored butter in the world because again, like the hashbrowns Zero flavor. I give it a 1. But I've gone now 3 times, hoping that the experience would get better as this location got its feet off the ground. I'm officially done. Whether it's a broken AC, a never-ending wait for (basic) food that should take a few minutes to grill up, bathrooms with no toilet paper in them, food that's clearly not fresh (my hashbrowns were literally chewy in a way I have never experienced before), a menu that lies to you ("fresh blueberry hot cakes" actually have frozen blueberries), or randomly overpriced items (my kids' little plastic cups of apple juice were more than FOUR DOLLARS a piece, and the receipt said it was for a 12oz drink, which these most certainly were not), there is just literally no reason to go here. read more

The setting is decidedly nostalgic and the menu is the broad swath you'd expect from an establishment open 24/7, but they executed our food orders perfectly. Not to mention, the quintessential diner coffee mugs are alive and well here - they just fit perfectly in your hand (an odd observation, I know)! I enjoyed perfectly poached eggs (medium), burnt bacon (by request) and very, very fresh bread. The home fries were well seasoned and there was even a decent hot sauce selection to choose from. My sweetheart enjoyed the same components, just prepared differently (over medium, non-burnt and wheat toast). I think the total for two with coffee was $25. First time here as a friend in town wanted some diner food. First of all the place had no AC and when we walked in, from behind the counter we were just waved to sit anywhere. Sat, got a menu, and ordered some water. I ordered the pork chops and was informed they didn't have. My friend ordered one of the sandwiches and was told they didn't have. So we both ordered the liver with onions. I wanted it with Lima beans but they didn't have that day and my friend ordered coleslaw and there was none. The steak was not only not a T-Bone it was flavorless and so was the food the best thing was the toast and even that only had butter in the middle. The waitress when we asked her about why wasn't it a TBone acted like she didn't know. I had the French toast with scrambled eggs (added cheese), bacon, a side of hash browns and a cup of coffee. With all my additions and tip it was exactly $25.
