Bob's Big Boy is very nostalgic to me. As a young child/teen there was one in the Eagle Rock Plaza by my house and I have great memories, which I should have left as great memories and no try to recreate the past. Myself and my family went on a Friday afternoon for dinner, I had my elderly mother with me that uses a walker, sometimes a wheelchair. On the day we went there were a lot of ppl just parked in their parking lot displaying their vintage cars. (Very Beautiful) don't get me wrong but they had even taken up the handicapped parking spots. I didn't see that they had their handicap card displayed. So we had to park in the last row of the parking lot, not far for myself but for my mom we might as well been a mile away. So anyway we get in and we are seated, employees are nice, everything looks clean. We order our food and drinks. I ordered a strawberry lemonade and it tastes like nothing, very bland, the food arrived and this is where it's possibly my fault I should have ordered a hamburger and I ordered a breakfast burrito. I saw reviews and it looked very good. Again very bland , no flavor, the green salsa- no flavor. My mom got the country fried steak and it looked like a tv dinner. Awful! And again no flavor. Normally I won't post about another person's experience. My son and daughter in law went to this Bob's Big boy yesterday. They ordered a salad and when they got it. The Lettues was brown. So the waitress took it back and gave them slimy fruit. When they called the manager they will give a free meal. I don't think they would come back to that. I have eaten at this Bob's a lot times. Our server, Ravyn, was just amazing!!!!!! She was friendly, courteous, knew the menu food items well and made sure we received our meals hot and quickly!!! The food was very delicious and delectable!!! My husband enjoyed the 2 egg combo breakfast that came with a lot of food and is served in the morning, afternoon and evening. This restaurant closes at midnight. I had Pappy Parker's Fried Chicken meal which came with 4 pieces of fried chicken, choice of potatoes, vegetables, garlic toast and a dinner salad with your choice of salad. All of the meals were very generous!!!!! We also ordered blueberry pie to take home. I would definitely recommend her as a server!!!!!!! Also, the hostess, Julianna, was wonderful and friendly as well!!! A lot of generous food at this old Burbank Diner. The ambiance is like a 1960s diner. We were at the counter with no wait. We had talked to two other diners and enjoyed talking to them about old cars from the 1960s. There was a smaller scale classic cars show. On Fridays, they have a huge classic automobile show. In 8-years, we hadn't tried from Bob's Big Boy Burbank--only their breakfast menu. We wanted to try their burgers. We headed there for dinner last night and sat on their patio. The burger had a good charbroiled flavor and the toasted bun was nice, but the tomatoes weren't ripe and should have been left off. And they used enough lettuce for a side salad that we kept pulling off. The onion rings were tasty. The fries were lackluster. The chocolate shake and the banana shake both tasted fine. Neither flavor of shake particularly had a strong flavor of chocolate or banana. They were classic diner shakes. Our server was friendly and bubbly. Like many restaurants and food establishments nowadays, Bob's was short staffed. The hostess told us that when we walked in. She took our name and told us it was going to be 10-minutes for an outside table. There were plenty of open tables outside but not enough servers to handle all of the tables inside and outside. Our wait was shorter than 10-minutes. Parking available behind the restaurant. Glad we tried Bob's classic burger. We'll stick to their breakfast menu. I love this Original Bob's Big Boy! It's a fun location. I have nice memories of this place as a kid and adult. Fridays are always vintage car show nights and weekends are busy! I miss when this place was 24hrs; however, they are still open late Friday and Saturday (3am) and Sunday to Thursday till midnight. Service is very friendly and BBB is super kid friendly which is why I go to BBB. Sometimes we eat there or just do takeout if I feel my little ones are overwhelmed. Unfortunately, I didn't have a great experience at Bobs Big Boy. To start, most lunch dishes come with a salad. This is a standard diner side salad: 90% iceberg, 10% tomato, and 100% bland and pretty bad overall. You cannot say that you do not want the salad, you have to have the salad, according to our waitress. I ordered the open face turkey sandwich. Per the menu, this should have come with the aforementioned salad and fries or fruit. While it did come with mashed potatoes, it did not mention on the menu that this sandwich is excluded from the fries/fruit option. We were not checked in on, we even had to find our waitress to get our check and ask another waiter for refills, hot sauce, and fry seasoning. The bathrooms were tiny and the women's bathroom was dirty. There are only two stalls for a huge restaurant! Definitely expect to wait for the toilet. While it is *technically* handicapped accessible, maneuvering a wheelchair or even a walker into the bathroom would be difficult given the small space. read more

After weeks of eating our way through Los Angeles, we chose to close out our stay at this iconic California restaurant chain. We've been visiting Los Angeles for years and have passed by this Googie/Moderne-style architectural landmark on numerous occasions and have fondly remembered when my eldest sister, who had just graduated from Pepperdine University, bragged about getting glimpses of The Fab Four, AKA The Beatles eating here. She even went to their concert at the Hollywood Bowl with her "British Invasion" crazed friends. At the same time, I, as the youngest in my family, could only dream about going to concerts or seeing International celebrities from afar. I've often joked with my brothers-in-law about how "low-key" and easy to please I am when it comes to eating and cooking. Also, I blamed my husband and brother-in-law for concentrating on eating regional Chinese foods that I was beginning to tire of. I made my case for eating at Bob's Big Boy because of nostalgic feelings over my sister's experiences and Honolulu's former Bob's Big Boy restaurant in Mapunapuna. We arrived at Bob's Big Boy around 2 PM, put in our name with the host, and waited outside to be called. The wait time was only twenty minutes even though we could see a fully-packed dining room and were fifteenth in line. Meanwhile, I decided to roam around to take photos and mentally debated over my menu item choice. As I took pictures, I saw the Wall of Fame and other memorabilia. At that time, several seats in the waiting area became available, so I signaled the rest of my family in from standing in the chill to come in. They barely sat down when the host called to seat us in the retro-decorated dining room. I asked the host about the booth location where The Beatles had dined, which he graciously pointed out, but it was already occupied. FOOD: - "Original" Big Boy Combo: the menu describes this meal as "The original double-deck hamburger with two "never frozen" burgers, lettuce, cheese, and our special red relish." Bob's can make this claim because they created this combination thirty years before the other California-original burger joint, the Big Mac. What I had forgotten about was the generous dinner salad and choice of fries or fresh fruit that is included with the combination meal. My husband, fellow dining mate, and I chose this same menu item. The fries were served hot from the fryer and tasted great, dipped in Bob's Blue Cheese dressing. The Big Boy was freshly prepared, humongous, and very tasty. We smashed the buns and burgers to bite in and jokingly said we should have gaping jaws like snakes. $12.99 - Country Fried Steak: my brother-in-law ordered this entrée since he enjoyed eating it and knew it was the other meal choice I had waffled over. The country fried steak is a tenderized cube steak that is seasoned, breaded, and deep-fried like fried chicken. It was tender, seasoned well, and tasted terrific. The country gravy and three fried eggs that topped that country-fried steak and crisp hash browns completed this popular entrée. My brother-in-law gave me a piece of the country fried steak with its creamy gravy, and I promised myself to order it the next time (with hope) we eat here. $15.99 Our server was amiable, efficient, and attentive. We could tell she had enjoyed working at this chain restaurant for many years. She shared a bit of lore about Bob's Big Boy when we told her we were visiting from Hawai'i and missed the restaurant when it closed in 2008 due to a kitchen fire. Along with her cheerful stories, she also reminded us about the eating traditions of dipping our fries in their famous blue cheese dressing and the famous red relish in the Big Boy. Expensive tourist trap. The food was very standard diner fare, but nothing was special and the milkshake was pretty disappointing. The strawberry milkshake in particular tasted like artificial strawberries and was watery and for the price point I would have expected it to at least be thicker. The burger wasn't amazing, honestly the whole meal we could have just eaten at McDonalds and we would have been more satisfied. Bob's Big Boy is iconic! It's worth it just to go for the experience, especially if you're a diner lover. It's an oh so very retro 50's diner that has both booth and counter seating, as well as outdoor seating. And on Friday nights they even have a car show! As for the food, it's what you would expect for diner food, but slightly better in my opinion. It's nothing fancy but it always tastes yummy, hot food is always served hot, and textures are good. They don't use much seasoning, mostly just salt and pepper, but that's true American food for you. Breakfast is served all day and they even give you a free sundae on your birthday. I've only been a couple of times but the sandwiches, burgers, and fries are all good choices. This last time I was there for dinner so I tried the Fish and Chips. They were ok. Not exactly what I was expecting but not bad. Normally I like beer battered but these were just breaded pieces that looked like they could have been from the grocery store's freezer section. They tasted fine though. Coleslaw was good but I prefer sweet Southern style. Texas toast was amazing but it's pretty hard to eff that up. My family and I did enjoy our evening out here for diner classics. The Big Boy statue and overall old school feel are appealing, and the food ranged from decent to pretty good. My wife liked the All American burger, basically a one-patty Big Boy burger with more vegetables. She thought it was just right, great if you are hungry. This is the reason I am giving this place 4 stars. My patty melt was alright - I was hoping for a bit more, I don't know, gooey-ness and decadence but I enjoyed it all the same. The red pickle relish that my wife had with her burger was great with the patty melt too - ask for some of that on the side. My daughter basically enjoyed her chicken fingers and fries. Service is friendly but a bit spotty, and it took us 30 minutes to get a table early on a Sunday evening. $40 or so (before tip) for my family was refreshingly inexpensive for what we got. Three Strikes and two stars. We decided to go to Bob's on a Monday evening. Boy, was it busy. We had a 25 minute wait for 2 people to be seated. Once seated, it took at least 15 minutes before we were approached by our server to get our drink order. My coke was fine, my spouses Arnold Palmer was awful. I don't know if it was the tea or the lemonade that was the problem, but it was terrible. Anyway, order placed. Wait for the food was not too long. I got the pastrami sandwich and spouse ordered the burger. We both got fries and salad. Now for the reason for the two-star rating. Strike One: When I got my sandwich, the person delivering the food (not our server) delivered it with what looked like two garnish peppers that included one whole pepper, and one with what looked like a bite was taken out of it. When turning it over, you could almost see teeth marks on it. Immediately while the person was there, I showed it to her. She said that can happen. I told her it looked like someone bit the top off. She said I could talk to the manager. In the meantime, I asked her for a side of ranch to dip the french fries and she brought me a bowl of ranch. The manager came over and said he could assure me that it was not a bite taken out of the pepper. He asked if I'd like a drink, and I'm like...no, I already have one. He said how about a desert. I said no. He said he would talk to the cooks about it. Strike Two: After dipping my french fries a few times in the bowl of ranch, I realized there was something in the bowl of dressing. I pulled it out with a fork, and it was a large piece of lettuce. I called over our server, and showed him there was lettuce in my side. He said in a flip way, "We're busy, and the dressing is by the lettuce, so some is going to fall in." So now I'm thinking, "What else will 'fall in'." Strike Three: My spouse told him about the two problems with the food, and he said regarding the pepper looking like a bite was taken out of it, "We don't have time to do that, we're very busy." I almost laughed out loud. Don't have time to do WHAT exactly? So I paid $21 with tax for a sandwich that I didn't even eat half of, with fries that I left behind. There was no discount offered, it was like it was standard practice to have pre-eaten food on your plate and items that "fell in" to the dressing. There's nothing like a classic diner. This is definitely the sort of spot you come to for the vibes, but maybe not for the food. I came to Bob's Big Boy for the first time and ordered The Original Big Boy Combo (salad, double decker hamburger, and fries) and my boyfriend got the Pappy Parker's Fried Chicken (salad, 4 pieces of fried chicken, potatoes, veggies, and garlic bread). It is a pretty impressive amount of food. And while I wouldn't consider it "cheap," it's nice that they haven't totally jacked up the prices. All around pretty average. The salads felt very nostalgic but entirely unnecessary. The lettuce was still wet and it was drowning in dressing to the point that it was almost inedible at the end. The rest of the food was pretty bland. All in all, it's still cute and I would try other things on the menu but their two most popular dishes were not so remarkable. read more
