Based on some Yelp reviews I decided to revisit Bob's. I have always liked the Giant Burger. They are great; big; juicy, big hunk of onion, nice 1000 Island dressing sauce. I saw the Saba come out of the pick-up window and that looked good as well. However I had the Shimp burger that has been so highly praised. Well, it's not tempura, it's standard fried shimp, not particularly large ones at that. It was ok but it wasn't the best thing I've ever eaten. I guess to each their own. I'll stick to the Giant Burger and try the Grilled Saba one day. read more

Every time I go, I have a hard time getting anything besides the mini hibachi chicken. The BBQ sauce is so ono. I've tried the saba plate, and wasn't as happy with it, in all truth, but the hibachi chicken is enough to make me keep coming back. This place is old school. It reminds me of places my dad used to take me to as a kid. I'm a sucker for these old local food joints. This is the most decent quick stop BBQ joint I've found in Kalihi. Great prices and selection of breakfast, plate lunches, burgers and sandwiches. I ordered the pulled pork sandwich "Island Style" without mayo and a side of curly fries. Fries are hard to mess up and these were well seasoned and crispy. As for the pulled pork sandwich, it fulfilled my craving, but wasn't exactly what I had hoped. I've been to BBQ restaurants in LA and Arizona and can't forget how awesome they were. This pulled pork sandwich was basically kalua pork with BBQ sauce on top, lettuce, (mayo if you like), between two slices of bread. It would've been a lot better if the bread was freshly baked and toasted/grilled; if the BBQ sauce didn't taste like sweet ketchup; and if it were actually slow roasted and tossed in the BBQ sauce. The bottom bun was rather soggy due to the kalua pork. I eventually added Sweet Baby Ray's Hickory Brown Sugar BBQ sauce (took my meal to-go) which is sweet, savory, rich, and dark. That made the sandwich a lot more enjoyable. I guess I'm going to have to find an authentic smokehouse on the island since I'm so picky with BBQ. I am a foodie. But hey, you can't beat the $6 meal I just ate nowadays. I made a sparkling drink at home. Enjoy and move on quickly to something more authentic. *I also remember Gordon Biersch having an awesome pulled pork sandwich about three years ago, but they might've took it off the menu. read more

I had a teri beef plat and a saimin. The food was "okay"--nothing special--nothing I'd crave to eat again. The portions were just "average," and actually seemed a little small for the price. The saimin was a rip-off because it was the little S & S plastic container with a lid that you add water to. This place has been around forever. I grew up in Kalihi, so Bob's has always been a familiar icon to me. Located on the busy intersection of Dillingham and Waiakamilo Road, Bob's Bar-B-Que is really easy to find. Parking has vastly improved since I was a kid. No longer are there only 10 stalls. The neighboring building was knocked down and the parking lot was enlarged. So like I said, I grew up in Kalihi and have eaten here many times. It's okay, but I really don't see why everyone raves about it. Well I take that back, the BBQ sauce is excellent. I wish I could get a few bottles of that stuff for home use. read more

I'll admit this place lacks in looks and their tables are pretty worn down. Yet, you'll always see a steady stream of customers. I really enjoy their Teri Cheeseburger and giant fries. I also love their Hibachi Chicken, which is usually the plate I'll order if I come here. I usually will ask for all rice or request different side. Their mac salad is alright. The food has always been consistent whenever I've come here and haven't been disappointed. The regular plate portion is large and it will feed me for at least 2 meals. I love to come here for their burger deal. It's $9 with a drink and soda. But it's a real burger with crinkle cut fries that you can get extra crispy. All of their teriyaki stuff is just delicious. Plus there's malts and shakes. So you can't go won't with your order! read more

If you want traditional American BBQ than bobs isn't for you. If you want solid Hawaiian bar b que than this place must be on your list. Solid portions, unbeatable prices, and delicious food. Got the ahi burger and chicken katzu. Delicious fish, perfectly cook and paired with their slaw on a bun. The chicken lightly breaded and delicious has well. But the welcome surprise was their Macaroni salad. Unlike most places that are super heavy and filling bobs does it right with a light and creamy addition to the plate. 10/10 I'm coming back. read more

Whenever I'm in Honolulu I have to stop here for a plate lunch. Been doing this since the early 80's even though Kalihi is a little rough. I got the teri-beef with the two scoops rice and macaroni salad, my usual and loved it. Everyone must love the place like me, since its always crowded. Finally went here after all the suggestions. I had the Hibachi Chicken and my company had the short ribs. The Hibachi chicken was tender and very saucy the short ribs were fantastic. If you want BBQ, this is the place to go. You can really taste the grilled flavor in every plate they serve. Not many places serve beef ribs anymore. I've tried their Hibachi chicken (very good), Pork ribs (good), Beef ribs (very good, just know beef ribs don't have a ton of meat), Saba (good), Hamburger steak (so-so, they don't give much). I usually get their Hibachi chicken with little bit extra sauce. Their mac salad is really good. The chocolate malt is awesome. Their wedge fries are really good. Their baked beans are good. Parking has been increased, so it's much better now. The only thing that sucks, the place kind of doesn't look so clean. read more

Good portion sizes. Ordered the ribs, the ribs were good but not fond of the bbq sauce. It was overpowering and tasted a little burnt. Order a large chocolate malt. Didn't taste any malt at all. Pros: The pulled pork sandwich (Hawaiian Style) was on point. It was juicy and flavorful. The service was good and the food came out quick. Cons: The chicken Katsu was just ok, the potato wedges were super dry, the baked beans had a little too much oniony flavor for my taste and the corn was freezing cold, I guess warm corn isn't their thing. If you're in the area and craving bbq I would stick to very specific items recommended by other Yelpers. This is the place to go for good food and great prices. This place is always busy and the parking isn't the best. I would recommend calling your order in by phone. You can get the menu on Yelp check the menu photos. If you order the giant fries be aware its not a giant bag of fries. It is actually large steak fries that are seasoned, taste pretty good. The highlight of this place I am going to have to say is the chocolate malt. Yes, that is right they have a soft serve chocolate malt, just the the old carnation malt we used to get at the theatres or drive in if your old enough to remember. I would recommend anything BBQ'd, I mean its in the name. For our visitors don't get it confused with texas bbq, this is more local/ Asian style bbq. I normally get the teri burger deluxe minus the onions, fries and a malt. Its tasty and they even sell their bbq sauce there if you wanna buy it. It is a shoyu based sauce, that is winnaz. This was our favorite meal during our weeklong stay in Oahu! After a nice long hike to Manoa Falls and beyond we were famished. This place hit the spot! Another near work favorite, Bob's is where you want to go if you're feeling hungry for something hearty. On the corner of Waiakamilo and Dillingham, this is a local style plate lunch place. The parking lot is tiny and it gets pretty busy so I would phone ahead for a order. Seating is on a picnic tables outside. I would recommend the Hibachi chicken, Kalbi, and the steak plate. I think the best thing on the menu is the steak plate. The steak was tender and juicy and the portions are pretty generous as well. But the prices are a little high for a plate lunch so be aware of that. However if you want solid food and flavor than you can't go wrong with Bob's. read more

I love Bob's. It's close enough to my house in which I can get that amazing Hibachi chicken and Large chocolate malt any time I want. It never disappoints me when I go there and the smell of food cooking in the air is just beautiful. It's not a Mcdonalds fried food smell (despite one located right across the street), it's good quality food. If only my mother could cook like that, I would be a fat bastard walking down the street enjoying my curly fries, giant fries, hibachi chicken, and chocolate malt, daily. I would minus 1 star from Bob's for being a little unsanitary. Most great places are, but nobody likes to eat on sticky and stinky tables. The seating area in the corner looks a bit like homeless people sleep, pee and poop their nightly. It doesn't affect me since I go home, but I am sure it deters people who haven't tried it away. As a fan of tradition, it is great to see old-school places survive and thrive in this gourmet foodie world, and Bob's is no exception. Clayton and his family have done a great job of keeping the "if it ain't broke" menu items intact and improving the ones that may have needed a little tweaking. Bob's is one of those rare places where what you eat is what you smell (for a mile around, actually). Is there any other place on the island with a such a happy smell trail? Everyone has their favorites here, and being a pescetarian, mine is their broiled ahi steak. As a fish guy, too many times I've eaten the other guys' shoe-leather ahi that is dry and tasteless. Bob's ahi is consistently moist and flavorful, and when you hit it with a bit of steak sauce and the Kilauea Fire Sauce (among the many different condiments they offer), you simply can't go wrong. Bob's is also the ONLY place I know where they put your macaroni salad in a separate container so it doesn't spoil quickly. Being from Hawai'i, you realize how quickly mac salad can go bad when exposed to heat. Clayton and his gang figured out how to make all of Bob's plates picnic friendly by separating the mac salad, extending its freshness far longer than any other place. Their onion rings are crave-worthy and my friends swear by virtually everything else on their menu. And their prices -- they look like they too have been carried over from the '60s. I simply can't believe how affordable - but hearty - their plates are. There's a reason Bob's has lasted this long and if you haven't tried this place yet, once you do, you'll know why. read more

Came here for a quick, to-go dinner. Ambiance isn't great but food is quality. Ordered the mixed plate which came with rice, kalbi, teri beef, and teri chicken. You also get a choice of mac salad, coleslaw, or kimchee. I like that they pack your choice of side separately. Everything in the plate was tasty but the teri beef stood out. Tender and succulent, marinated in a nice sauce. Not too sweet, not too salty. Also got a chocolate malt while I waited. It was ok but I think Wendy's is better and cheaper. read more
