Unfortunately, after 6 years of dining with Bob's in Austin , we are changing our opinion from all five stars restaurant to one star. We are very disappointed with our experience tonight. Over the years, we've been going to Bob's whenever we have reasons to celebrate and they always took care of us. So after a while we haven't been there, we were excited to celebrate our special day there tonight. First, when we arrived, we were seated in the corner booth in the Golf room by a male host. He could be a manager. He was abrupt and seemed too busy to sit us on our booth. The booth he sat us on had a big cut on the seat cushion (see picture). Since the host was too busy, he probably didn't see it or care enough to see it. Side Note: there were several other booths or tables available in this room alone. Not too long after being sat down, our server, Katie, greeted us and ask if we were ready to order our drinks. We were not and she came back a few minutes. After taking our drink order, we told her we were ready to order our food. While Katie was nice and professional, we noticed no one has told us any specials for the night. Maybe they don't have one now. Then the bread came, nice and warm as we remember it. Not long after that, we noticed some bugs flying around our tables. Maybe they were there the whole time we were there, but we saw some bugs which appear to be fruit flies and/or mosquitoes. We got at least two and one fell on our table. Toward the end of our dining experience, we told Katie and pointed out the bug on the table. She looked horrified, apologized, and swat it off the table. She said she'll tell someone about it. But nothing mentioned afterwards. So, about the food, we had blue cheese salad, T bone steak, ribeye steak and lobster mac n cheese. Food was good! But the carrot was undercooked. So overall, our tap is around $200 for dinner for 2. For this amount, we think it shouldn't be too much to ask to expect a nice seating and bugs free dining experience. Unfortunately, that's not what we got tonight. This place definitely has deteriorated over the years. read more

I spent my Thanksgiving at Bob's Steak and Chop House and everyone was so great. I'm newer to town so i was out on my own, the staff from hostess, to bartender to service staff was friendly and made conversation. I'm very appreciative the staff made spending my first holiday away from friends and family a good one! Besides the service, the food was excellent! Had high expectations as reading reviews this seemed like a good steakhouse to go to. In summary - it was ok. Nothing more, nothing less. Service - it was hit and miss. Had a very attentive waiter at start but then he disappeared and someone else cycled through and then someone else. I actually don't mind revolving wait staff, but when one came to table and said my cocktail was moments away and I pointed to it on the table... the same thing happened when I said I wanted to order a glass of wine and the waiter disappeared and no wine appeared and I had to reorder. So I think there was some confusion this night in who was going what. Food, ok on to the main event. It was ok. Given the price I expected great but it was 'ok'. Wedge salad was good but that's hard to muck up in my opinion. Ordered the NY strip steak and it was ok but not amazing flavor which I expected. Don't get me wrong, nothing was wrong as such but it was not anything amazing. In sum, it was an ok visit. I was left wanting more on the food front (flavor not portion size!) and the confusion of staff and who was doing what wasn't great either. Not sure I could recommend this place. There will be other steak places in Austin so maybe try these before heading to Bobs. read more

We came in on Monday night for a birthday dinner. Yes, a Monday. I made the reservation online but they never asked if we were celebrating anything (I never got a chance to tell them it was a birthday dinner to surprise him) but did ask if we had ever been there before, then followed it up with, "have you ever been to a steakhouse before?" what? No, first time ever. lol. Of course I've been to a steakhouse, I'm almost 37. Maybe she thought I was poor, or stupid, or ...Amish? Service was ok, food was ok. The steaks were cooked halfway perfect, the other half was dry and brown all the way through.. a no no when you order medium rare. But I just let it go knowing my husband needed to go to work the next morning. It didn't feel like a birthday celebration to me... what we ordered: Appetizer: Smoked salmon appetizer, Salads: Wedge Salad Blue Cheese Chopped salad Entree: Filet mignon, T-bone, Sides: Lobster mac n cheese, skillet potatoes (comes with onions!) Garlic mashed potatoes. plus drinks - it was just too much food! They packed our plates to go and forgot our carrot... which I was kinda excited to try since I couldn't eat but 2 bites of steak since I was so full from the salad and appetizer. Word to the wise, don't let the salesperson talk you into getting appetizers and salad and steak = you won't be able to eat 1/4 of your entrée. and then still push dessert. I know it's your job to push things but come on. . If I'm taking home an entire steak b/c I cant finish it.. I'm probably not going to get dessert. No need to push it. I took a $50 steak home and ate it cold the next day since I knew it was going to be dry as a bone if I reheated it/steamed it somehow. Oh well. Live and learn, Maybe one day I'll be back for HH and have on of their $20 cocktails. :) side note: I've been to Eddie V's, Ruth Chris, Capital Grille, Uchi, The Driskill - and this was definitely 6th place of that order. ..mostly because I didn't feel like it a celebration. I am writing this review on behalf of my boss's experience. -They had initially made reservations at III Forks for our 32 year anniversary. Unfortunately, there was no valet. Bob's Steak and Chop house is right next door so we called to see if they could squeeze us in. Andrea answered the phone and was more than accommodating. She got us a corner booth, they put roses out on the table for us and made the night absolutely unforgettable. This place went above and beyond for complete strangers. We would recommend them and will 100% be back. I'm so grateful we accidentally found this place! This is an extremely nice steakhouse. The first thing you notice when your meal starts to come is they bring you very hot plates to put your food on. I have never seen this in even the nicest of steak houses. The quality of the wagyu beef was incredible and the price was not bad my date and I shared a wagyu ribeye, 11 oz and it was awesome it came with mashed potatoes and a giant glazed carrot that was an interesting touch. We added macaroni and cheese as a side because we just like it. The mac and cheese here was some of the best we've ever eaten. I was in town for a conference and took a small group of people to this place for dinner on a Friday evening. I enjoyed that the downstairs was more of a higher end vibe, but they also had an upstairs outside bar and dining area that we were sat in. The weather was perfect and I enjoyed that the upstairs was more laid back. The reason for not giving 5 stars is because from beginning to end we were at our table for almost 4 hours. We had a group of 5, ordered appetizers, dinner and dessert. However, it took an hour after appetizers before we received our dinner. If dining, don't expect to get in and out in a timely fashion. I have worked in the restaurant business for a very long time and understand how busy a Friday evening can become, other than the timeliness of our meal it was a good time. I do wish that a manager would've stopped by at some point in time to apologize for the delay and just to check on us. read more

What an amazing experience we had tonight celebrating my brothers birthday at Bob's. We had a large party of 10 in the back room for private service. We ordered so much food and it was all incredible. The lamb lollipops, lobster bisque soup, onion rings, bacon wrapped shrimp. Of course the steaks were all standing. The evening was Especially outstanding because of the service from Dan. I am notorious for being indecisive And a tough critic. He help me choose the best dishes and white glove service. Food was good but not top steak house quality. When I was there they were busy but I don't feel that's much of a reason to serve over cooked food. My steak was ordered medium rare but came more medium well, quite a difference. Lobster Mac and cheese side dish was also very over priced at $35 for a family side. My husband wanted to come here for his birthday and since I have not been to Bob's in over 10 years, remembering that their food was excellent, I acquiesced and I am sorry to say, but I would rather go to Eddie V's or Trulucks the next time he wants to visit a steakhouse. Bobs is still a traditional steakhouse that lacks umph and has no originality when it comes to craft cocktails or desserts, however, they do have a slamming wine list that is highly impressive. With the addition of fried lobster to the appetizers, which was truly delicious, I do not think Bob's has changed it's menu in 20 years. While that really is not such a bad thing, if your menu has not changed in so many years, then every single dish should come out perfect as they should have the preparation down to a science. After drooling over pics of the crab cakes on Yelp, I was excited and then let down when I was presented with small-medium burned crab cakes that seemed to have more filling than meat. The honey mustard was a little too sweet as was the glaze that covered my garlic mashed potatoes. Their signature carrot was good and my husband absolutely loved his steak and loaded baked potato. From the hostess to our waiter Clarence, they were very nice and accommodating. I surprised my husband with a gift and it was delivered promptly as planned. While I did not complain to Clarence regarding my dinner, he did overhear me tell my husband that I did not enjoy my meal and to raise my spirits some, Clarence offered us a free dessert which was a very kind gesture from such an impeccable employee. read more

I have been to much better steak houses. Their rooftop doesn't open until 7pm on Fridays, so we enjoyed a drink at the bar while we waited for the rooftop to open. Once we got up there, they really only had a very select section of the rooftop available for service, which was all high-tops. Our server was extremely welcoming and went out of her way to help us out with a few things (I had brought cheese from Wisconsin, so they offered to put it in the fridge for us). We ordered the calamari, which has a really good cocktail sauce and was cooked perfectly. The steaks are huge. The only thing I didn't understand was you couldn't sub out the carrot for asparagus on the side. read more

Bobs was once a prime jewel of downtown Austin. Now it has become sub-standard to say the least. We had 9 special guest there and 3 of the steaks were cooked incorrectly including mine. We addressed this with the manager and instead of handling the situation in a professional manner he got upset and slammed a plate on our table which could of caused harm but fortunately it did not. He also got aggressive with our friend and was in his face like he was ready to fight him. As if the situation wasn't bad enough the authorities were called to assist by this manager when he was the one that committed borderline attempted assault. I have never seen this conduct by a manager in all my years of dining. Sadly for Bobs they alienated 9 great patrons that have been coming there for years. Fried Calamari Appetizer - this was good, just your average calamari. Lamb Lollipops - VERY SALTY. Most of the food here is extremely salty. It was very flavorful but too rare for my preference, it tasted so raw in the middle and I didn't really feel like eating my steak afterwards. We just went with the chefs recommendation of medium rare plus, but it's definitely cooked more on the rare side. The plate was also extremely hot, so it slowly cooked the underside of the lamb chops. Creamed Corn Brûlée - my bf is obsessed with this. I also liked it but it was so sweet, I could only take a few bites. If you love extra sweet food, this is for you. Veal Porterhouse - this piece was huge! It was really tender, juicy and fatty. Great quality! Prime Ribeye Steak 18oz - the steak was also huge! After both appetizers I hardly ate any of it. Definitely getting a smaller cut of meat next time. I was really thrown off by the carrot. It's just a giant carrot thrown onto your plate and it looks funny how it's presented. Its also a bit of off-putting in a way. I didn't look at photos before ordering so it wasn't what I expected. I mean if I'm gonna pay $50 for a dish I'd expect something of higher quality that's more presentable. As for the potatoes, they were super crispy! I wish I asked for the gravy on the side because it was smothered in it and you can't tell that it's crispy anymore. The gravy didn't taste very good. I also expected this to be higher quality. They just used the standard Russet Potatoes. I think it's weird how you can't really choose the sides you want and you have to pay extra for something different. I can't justify the price for this steak house. There are so many other steakhouses in the area that use higher quality ingredients and taste better. read more

I came here recently for a meeting of a community service Board I serve on. Our huge table ordered one of every appetizer and shared everything. It was all cooked and seasoned to perfection. I had a medium rare 16 oz ribeye, which was so mouth-watering. Light on the salt but heavy on the charring, which was perfect. Well executed. Our waiter Jesse was on top of his game. No one ever had an empty glass, he remembered everyone's order without writing anything down and didn't miss a detail when everything was delivered. Really disappointed. We had a large party of 11 for my wife's birthday. They were busy and our main dishes came out very late. My steak was way over cooked I ordered medium-rare and it was well done. Our waiter felt terrible he was not part of the problem but it was too late to cook another one we had reservations for cocktails to get to. Bob's is typical in many regards but the food is quite good. The best thing about it may be the large variety of very cool American flags. Every time a television is on it seems the media are hyping and encouraging tearing down, protesting or even burning the great American flag, which is a disgrace. That being said, it's a pleasure to dine and spend money at a business that holds the US in such high esteem. To say that we loved this would be an understatement. Today you can have the 50 dollar filet mignon or the $120 scotch. When you got started, you could barely afford national brand breakfast cereal. * * * Bob's mostly succeeds at showing you the good stuff at its best. But there are imperfections. My filet mignon was a fine piece of beef and the char job on it was absolutely masterful. Various vegetable dishes were cooked unevenly, with the good parts being scrumptious, and the under-cooked parts being more discordant. The house pride homemade pickles were nearly tasteless. Homemade bread collapsed with first contact. Buttering it and eating it was not unlike buttering and eating a deflated basketball. Still - I wolfed down half of it happily. I had a superlative filet mignon. There were wonderful skillet-fried potatoes. The vegetables for the most part were lovely. And I had a nifty fifteen year old scotch which put a mellow perspective on the proceedings. * * * Marilyn Monroe would understand Bob's predicament well. She was a sex goddess. Every man she was with was expecting a sex goddess. She could take them home to a palatial bedroom with satin sheets. Her body was excellent raw material. But there was little that she could do That could not have been done just as well by any girl in any bed in Elkhart, Indiana. She could work on her beauty regime. She could try a few subtle bedroom tricks. But mostly, men had to be excited about the idea of being in bed with Marilyn Monroe. * * * Bob's is expected to be a steak goddess. Bob's provides a palatial room. Bob's provides excellent raw material. Bob's has access to a small number of subtle tricks. But at the end of the day, steak is steak, as sex is sex. Mostly you have to be excited about the idea of eating a $50 filet mignon. * * * I have never been in bed with Marilyn Monroe. But I HAVE had a filet mignon and scotch at Bob's Steak and Chop House. When I got home, I fell asleep almost immediately and had an hour and a half of happy dreams. One can fall asleep just as quickly in Elkhart - But the trip to Bob's was nice. read more

Well, we came, we tried and it was as bleh! I specifically said to our server that I was looking for a tasty steak. I even went from regular ribeye to bone in ribeye and the steak was bland and under-seasoned. It took about 25 minutes for our server to come and ask how our food was and at that time I told her that it was not good and the steak was bland. She responded with "oh, I wish that I would have known sooner" what was I supposed to do, chase you down and tell you the food sucked? A free dessert was offered for an $89 under seasoned steak. Worst Bob's experience ever, it felt like an off day at Saltgrass or something. The servers were not very well trained, they didn't know about the menu like you would expect. We had a couple of food issues, nothing major - one overdone steak, one wrong aide dish, but when we asked to be corrected, they didn't seem to know what to do, and it became some sort of ordeal.
