After being gone a week in the East Coast, upon driving home from LAX, my friend and I needed some REAL Mexican food. My friend has been here since he was a child and this was my first visit. Had a burrito al pastor with green salsa and everything except beans. Had an horchata to drink with it. Easily THE best pastor meat I've eaten. A coworker of mine ordered a carne asada with no rice or beans to go for me. He purchased the burrito as a gift for all the favors I've done for him. The burrito was a good size. Once I took my first bite, I regretted doing any favors. The meat was tender and cut finely. But something was off about the burrito that when I take each bite I get engulfed in tanginess. I picked off some pieces of the carne asada, it wasn't it. It had average flavor and it wasn't oily. I dissected the burrito more and tried the red salsa and guacamole by itself. Not too tangy and I wasn't too fond of either. I did like the cheese though. I take another bite of the burrito and again the tanginess returns. I couldn't figure it out. It was frustrating. Perhaps the combination of all the ingredients made the burrito tangy. Based on this experience I will not be visiting the restaurant. Nothing impressed me at all. read more

And the award for the best carnitas taco I've had goes to... Boca Del Rio! I always thought Boca Del Rio and Taco Del Rio had the same food, so I was never really motivated to try Boca Del Rio. Well I was already in the area, so I decided to check them out and found out that they don't really serve the same food (at least when it comes to tacos). I'm so glad I went with carnitas in addition to carne asada for tacos. I got the tacos in YES, which is pretty much everything except the sour cream. It's exactly $2.00/ea after tax. They have basic taco with onion/cilantro but the YES ones have guac and loads of cheese piled on. The also have the special taco, which includes the sour cream and costs like 20 cents more than YES. First, their carne asada was just mediocre; maybe some of that was their forgettable red sauce I used on it. But their carnitas... first, if you're gonna have carnitas, make sure you get their green sauce. Because that carnitas + salsa verde combination was bomb. In fact, I tried to think hard to remember if I ever had a better carnitas taco before and came to the conclusion that this probably was the the best I've had. It was pretty funny watching an Asian lady running the taco joint and supervising the workers. She didn't look very happy when I asked for salsa verde and took a second to consider it before giving me some, haha. read more

Whaaaaat? $8 for a burrito that's bigger than your face? BRING IT ON! I love Boca Del Rio, but I always regret eating it afterwards. It's so greasy that the grease is immediately dripping from the burrito just as you are starting to eat it. I always get the all meat burrito with lengua (beef tongue) filled with cabbage, sour cream, guacamole and green sauce. ITS SO GOOD. Ooooh but the heartburn after...and I imagine that grease going straight to my thighs...sigh. That's why Boca is a once a month type of thing. :( read more

Late night hangover Mexican food joints are the best. The shadier looking it is, the better it tastes. This one ranks high up there. Just wear your neutral colors and roll up with your bass turned down. Make sure you got extra room in your stomach too. The portions are huge here. Tacos and burritos are topped with shredded cheese and they don't skimp on the proteins. You can order your burritos with beans, or pay a bit more and get all meat. All meat burrito with: Carne asada and al pastor onions and cilantro green sauce It must've been over 3 pounds! I can eat, but c'mon now, 3 pounds of meat after eating donuts? Oooh yeah! This place hit the spot. Their burrito is sooo good! I tried the all meat burrito (it's not just all meat) but it has onion, cilantro, cabbage, guacamole, sour cream, and lots of cheese. I'm not used to the cabbage or cheese but all together it was on point! The tortilla is soft and a bit of chewiness...the best kind. And the Carne asada was perfect. It's also a pretty good sized burrito for a good price...not like other places like taco trucks that sell for higher prices. I'm not usually in the area, but if I am, I'll for sure be coming back. I'm sorry, but this place is another example of skewed Yelp ratings. First off, the staff instantly made me want to leave, they just stared at me for almost a minute after coming up to the window and greeting them, the older gentleman that does the tortilla and meat and the guy that does the rest. Getting past that, fairly simple menu and options. I ordered the Carne Asada burrito and man, I wanted to throw it in the trash or feed it to a stray dog on the street or something after two bites. Why you say? THERE WASN'T ANY TASTE. NOTHING, JUST NOTHING. The meat was so under seasoned, It really just tasted like filler meat or some sorts, Taco Bell filler meat before they said "OH WE USE REAL MEAT NOW." I was at a loss for words. I mean, if it had more salt, just freakin salt, maybe it would have tasted something similar to actual meat you'd find in carne asada burritos. Continuing, the cheese? Really horrible choice of cheese for burritos in my opinion. I'm no cheese connoisseur, but it just tasted like 3% milk, not whole milk, 3%. I picked at the cheese to make sure it wasn't just me and, oh shit, it mixed with unevenly chopped onions that were freakin huge so you'd get this strong tasting onion taste everything you think you're going for the cheese. THE DECEPTION. The verde sauce, tasted like nothing. Maybe they ran out of salt that day or something because everything was under seasoned, HARD. So just imagine, carne asada cooked and seasoned with water, with a very weak tasting cheese that resembles 3% milk at the store, mixed in with huge chunks of onions with I believe rice and beans (don't even recall for sure) wrapped in a tortilla, topped off with a verde sauce that tasted like nothing. I also had a carnitas taco, which further backs up my taste buds on the cheese and onions. The carnitas actually had some flavor to it, just some. They sure love piling on cheese here, it makes everything looks so nice, I wish it tasted nice. Don't it you guys, it's a freakin' trap. A TRAP. Words cannot describe the love I have for this place. Here is where I learned what Al Pastor was, so my expectations were set very high at an early age. I couldn't say it right, and the guys here had a good fucking laugh at my expense when I placed my order all gringo-style. I'm telling you, Boca Del Rio gives new meaning to burritos and tacos. Food is so good here you will want to slap your mama and your grandma. The red salsa is so hot that you want to cry. Water won't help, neither will soda, tea, lemonade or tang. I've always heard awesome stories about Boca Del Rio when I was younger and I was excited that I actually had the opportunity to try it. I was beyond dissappointed. I looked on yelp and saw that you can get your burrito without the tortilla, so I went with that. The tortilla-less burrito was just the usual burrito filling topped with all the toppings such as guac, sour cream, and their signature cheese. It was alot, but the disappointing part was how bland the food tasted. Even with all of the toppings, it still tasted pretty bland. I don't know whether it was the choice of meat, or the lack of salsas, but I wasn't feeling it. My expectations where shattered. I left that night more confused and lost :( read more

Honestly when you say "taco" to me I conjure up images of warm soft little tortillas filled with fresh meat and some salsa, maybe a little onion/cilantro action and not much else. What can I say? I'm Mexican. These tacos are NOT those kind of tacos. But they are damn tasty, especially if you've been drinking. I love cheese and sour cream and yes i think the huge taco is weird, but its YUMMY! So here's the deal, I usually take into account everything when reviewing anything on Yelp. In this case, I'm going to overlook a few things, but still include all the details. Sorry, but the food here deserves five stars, lack of atmosphere or not. Food: I've had other things on this simple menu such as the quesadillas and the burritos and they are satisfying, but the delicacy at this "hole-in-the-wall" is the tacos. So what's so special about the tacos? Well to begin with, they provide you with endless options from guacamole and sour cream to onions and tomatoes. But one of the reasons I absolutely love this place is because of the amount of cheese they give you. It's insane! They don't charge extra and they are not stingy at all, which is refreshing. Your meat options are asada, chicken, pork and other items, but my favorite is asada. The asada is seasoned perfectly. Last thing is the salsa, honestly, nothing can make-or-break Mexican food quite like salsa can. Love both of their red and green salsa, but the red has a great overall flavor with a decent amount of spice to it. Having relatives that live in the La Puente area, I make sure to stop by any time I can. Staff: For the most part, the staff is very accommodating. I am a Mexican that doesn't speak Spanish so their patience is appreciated. Seriously, I don't appreciate it when I get looked down upon just because I don't know Spanish. They are quick and attentive. Price: While I will admit the tacos and some of the other items on the menu are pricey, it's justified for the most part. Considering they hook you up with cheese, I can look past the price. I also tend to overlook prices if the quality of the food merits it. The only thing that slightly bothers me is the cost of the drinks, plus they charge a refill. But if you get it to go, it's not a huge issue. Atmosphere: Ok, so if you look through the reviews, this is a huge issue for some. Me personally, not really. If the food is great, I really don't care what it looks like. Also, come on people it is a taco stand, not restaurant. That said, it really wouldn't kill them to paint the benches every so often. But honestly, if I am going to Boca Del Rio, I'm not going because it looks nice. So again, I am looking past that because of what it is. If you choose to dine there, you are acknowledging that this is a taco stand, nothing more, nothing less. If it bothers you that much, eat it at home, car or anywhere else. Other Notes: I'm not kidding you when I say that these are some of the best tacos I have ever had, and I feel it is something all races should come over and eat. It's a part of La Puente that I will always love, which is nice since the city is a food meca in its own right. My friend's parents actually own the place and since I was working in a group project with their son, we were force fed the soft tacos (corn tortillas, shredded beef, salsa) and burritos. I know , i know you may be skeptical at the the thought of an asian owned taco stand, but that should be exactly the reason why this place is so good cause he has added his own secret ingredient to this time honored favorite - which is Sour Cream and tons of Guacamole! This place was probably the first place to have mexican and korean fusion food. The addition of cabbage and their secret red hot sauce really brings the burrito together. Has like a kimchi flavor effect but the flavor of the meats just go together pretty well. This place can't be compared to the conventional tacos with tortilla, meat, cilantro and onions, because the tastes are different. However you WILL NOT be disappointed with the flavors of boca del rio. The burrito is filling and the tacos will be making you wanting for more! The meats are in huge chunks with lots of flavors! Never salty! ALL THERE MEATS ARE AWESOME! The portions are huge with lots of CHEESE, MEATS, SOUR CREAM etc! UGH it's not fair! I live in LA, taco mecca, but I have yet to find a taco stand like boca del rio. I was introduced to this place when I was just a wee-girl discovering real mexican food when people used to call it Shin's. Yes, it is surprisingly owned (or used to be owned) by an old Korean ahjusshi. How he came up with making the most orgasmic tacos in the universe is a mystery. THAT CHEESE.... that guac... that crema, that lovingly chopped cabbage... all piled high and topped with mouth-watering hot sauce (I do both red and green).... CAN'T HANDLE IT. Let me start by saying there are two reasons why I do not weigh 500 pounds and ride a scooter. (the scooter is of course for your entertainment) I wish they were self preservation and self respect but alas they are that Boca charges money and I don't have money. I consider myself a connoisseur of delicious tacos y burritos and it does not get any better than Boca. I highly suggest ordering the works or con todo for you Spanish speakers. Boca doesn't have the greatest meat but it is good and you get a lot of it. In addition to the copious amounts of meat it is the ingredients that make Boca the best. Globs of sour cream, beans, guacamole, and a healthy pile of cheese, onion, cilantro, and oddly but deliciously cabbage adorn your taco/burrito. If you order a burrito it is important that you bite from both the left side and right side for each mouthful. You must allow the mixture of ingredients to fuse into an oral orgasm. Taco eaters do not have this problem. Each mouthful will provide an explosion in their mouth. Boca is in no way authentic but it is a delicious fusion of Mexican and something else. The taco stand is dirty and roaches have been known to frequent this joint but if your looking for good tacos that should not be a concern. I have searched long and hard for the perfect taco stand but I keep coming back to Boca. It is amazing and accounts for the majority of my body fat. The portions are hearty and delicious and they have amazing horchata. What more do you need? Try this place at least once and for the love of god get the works with the delicious green salsa. Went there once after everyone said this was the taco place to go and like everyone else here I find they are just ok. In a word it was bland. After taking a bite of the burrito my plate was covered from the grease of the carne. Everything was just ok and I don't have a weak stomach but how much grease this food was sitting in made my stomach terribly upset. This place would have gotten up to three stars any where else, but this is La Puente and there are so many better places that are either cheaper or higher quality. So when we ordered tacos he said "don't say that is it, if you're still going to keep ordering" like whaaaaat how rude... Boca del rio is a hole in wall spot that does not put much effort on the outside. After reading all the reviews I decided to give this place a try. Arriving, there was a lenghty line at the window which proved they have a fan base. Honestly, It was OK. Definitely not the greatest tacos/burritos I've ever had. -TACOS: are packed with a meat of your choice (Asada, Lengua, Cabeza, Pastor, or Carnitas), layered in sour cream, guacamole, sauce (green or red), cilantro and onions (vegetables) and graciously topped with freshly grazed cheese. -BURRITOS: have all the same ingredients as the taco but with beans thrown in and a huge warm tortilla. read more

This place has a C rating. Nonetheless it is forgiveable because of the awesomeness found in their burritos. Their carne asada isn't dry and salty like king taco or other places. It's marinated, very moist and tender. They give some tortilla chips with an amazing salsa dip, and they serve orange bang to complete the ultimate food experience. They found the perfect combination in their combination burrito: juicy asada, beans, sour cream, a little bit of heaven. After my first bite, I made up my mind that even if I get diarrhea for the next week, or if I were to get colon cancer... WORTH IT. After my last bite... I was jonezin for more. Good luck if you eat here when it's raining, I did. 3. Location: Some comment that this place is not the best side of town, but I didn't even notice. But I did watch my back. I really love this place, and whenever i'm craving a taco it's the first place i think of. This is your typical hole in the wall place. The building consists of the kitchen and that's about it... Outdoor seating only. The thing i love about this place: the carne asada is just as i'd expect it to be - juicy and slightly chewy, i absolutely hate it when i get carne asada that's dry and burnt, like WHAT is this?!?! I wanted meat not burnt! never had an experience like that here. The cheese... I dunno where they find this amazing cheese, but the guy literally takes a block of solid cheese and grates it in front of your eyes onto the tacos. mmmmmmm cheesy goodness. And the beans they've got, i swear it must be lard ( dont ask dont tell), all i know it's delicioso. Also being an asian guy visiting, they always try to say thank you to me in mandarin haha. Recently moved to La Puente and have always been a fan of Taco Del Rio. So I had to give Boca Del Rio a try (since they somehow have to be related, but I am still not sure if they are). I had a Lengua burrito because they wanted to charge 2 dollar extra for half lengua and half asada (which I was a bit bummed and probably why I only gave a 4 star). I have to admit, if my memories serves me correctly, this is better than Taco Del Rio and their hot sauce is HOTTTTT (or muy caliente :D) Love it here and would come back! read more

Definitely a place you'll miss if you didnt yelp it or arent brave enough to try. On the outside it looks something out of a horror movie. But, once you inspect the inside of the restaurant, you'll notice that they keep a clean job and care for their product. I tried the Carne asada, carnitas, and the lengua tacos, with works. and wow! Yes, it was about $2 a taco, but one of them is worth 2 x $1.55 tacos. The meat was very tender, generous portions, and the creamy yet savory mixture, vegetables and cream. OH MAN.
