Came here for the first time tonight and was really impressed! As a very pregnant lady I've been craving fried mozzarella for months now and nothing hit the spot like the ones they serve here. Doesn't look too special on the outside, but the food was of excellent taste. There is indoor and outdoor dining available, but the outdoor dining area only has two tables. The service was friendly, and they give you complimentary sliced bread with dipping sauce (basalmic vinegar?). This bread is not hot, but it's soft and has a slightly hard crust dusted in real parmesan that tastes very satisfying to bite into. We appreciated that when we asked for more water and parmesan, a generous container of each was delivered to our table. read more

Coming from New York, I thought that moving to Portland would be it for Italian food. We tried a few Portland favs and were disappointed. A bit too hipster and trendy, I guess. Then, one night, we decided to explore some more. One reviewer said, "authentic Italian cuisine", so we went with Bocci's. A Chicken Parm and a Chicken Alfredo. After our 10th visit, I am now writing a review. Trust me, this place is amazing and will not disappoint. From the service, to the food, to the dessert, we can't get enough. My first experience was a family gathering in celebration of two birthdays only days apart. The food, staff, and quality could not have been better. They were attentive and the Pasta Pampadore was excellent. Prices are in line with any good Italian restaurant. I highly recommend them and they also had enclosed patio dining for milder days. read more

Small a cozy restaurant. After visiting Italy recently and seeing their menu online, I thought that it would be closes to as good as we had there. They were OK. I got the lasagna but the sauce was a little too sweet for me. My wife got the crab ravioli and she really like it though. I wish that their wine list was a bit larger and included more from Italy. I have used Bocci's On 7th for several occasions now and the staff here continues to impress me. In the last six months I have dined here, had an occasion catered from here and just dropped in for a bite to eat from time to time. Every visit has been a great experience from the standpoint of the food, the service and value. The space is intimate, but well laid out and tastefully decorated. Lets tackle this review from the standpoint of the three main criteria: The food is Italian and I always start with an anti-pasta plate full of veggies, olives, meats, peppers and cheeses. It is the perfect starter in my humble opinion. The house-made lasagna is mind blowing, layered perfection and cooked perfectly so that nothing is overly done. The chicken dishes are very good as well with near sauce perfection; my favorite is the Picatta with lemon herb sauce and capers. However, my go to dish is a simple calzone. It is baked beautifully and filled with sausage, mozzarella and marinara. Bliss. If you have room for dessert you cannot go wrong with the Double Chocolate Amaretto Mousse Cake. Every server at Bocci's has been attentive and fun, they don't bother you too much but you don't feel ignored either. Occasionally the owner comes out and handles some serving as well, Steve is a good-natured guy and he likes what he does and it shows. His prices are right in line with what you receive; I think that Bocci's is an excellent value. It is close enough to downtown to make it your dinner before a show at the Keller or the Schnitz or a Timbers game. As a caterer Steve and his crew have been amazing. Recently after a death in the family I just turned it all over to them to handle the food and they came through with flying colors impressing my picky old Jewish relatives. Not easy to do. Excellent service, excellent food. We went on a Sunday at 4pm, early dinner. Served warm focaccia bread, ordered Chicken Alfredo, chicken Caesar and mushroom Ravioli with pesto sauce. This is a great neighborhood gem! Very small and deceiving from the outside - the inside isn't all that awesome either but the food is great! I had the il Pesce Pomodoro from the Weekend April Fixe menu- which also came with a wedge salad (salad dressing was really good and tasted home made), antipasto plate and Garden Pea soup with Prosciutto. The soup was so fresh! My companion had the veal parmigiana from the regular menu (and half of my "starters"). My fish was cooked perfect and the risotto was creamy and flavorful. His veal was a little dry and came with pasta in a cheese sauce vs. Sunday gravy. We ended the meal with the chocolate amaretto mouse cake- so good! Moist and just a hint of amaretto. Came here looking for some authentic Italian food. Everything is made from scratch, as soon as I walked in I was greeted by the friendly cook named Trevor who was cutting up the mirepoix to add into the soups, and making all the sauces from their raw ingredients, none of that canned bs. Our server Nicole sat us in a booth, and promptly brought us water. She guided us through their lunch menu and about the specialties. My friends and I ordered fettuccine - with some pesto, the meatball sub, and the mushroom ravioli. All of it was amazing, you can tell everything was made fresh and not microwaved like other Italian restaurants. This is my new go to spot in Portland, and will definitely be back! The food was absolutely delicious, we got the calamari (lightly fried with great spices and flavor), fettuccini alfredo(YUM), and pasta bolognese(delicious). There have been many times in the past years when I would give this restaurant a 4. Last night they slipped a big notch. We invited two other couples to join us, assured of a 'good' meal based on many previous times. Five of us had the prix fixe meal, one lasagna. EVERY entree came out over done. The chicken saltimbucco had the thickest crust I've ever seen on this dish anywhere and it literally fell off the chicken whole with a touch of the fork. The lasagne was burnt on top. I'm aware the owner is not on premises anymore, he may want to pay attention to what is coming out of the kitchen if his name is going to continue the association. We won't rush back. read more

Went to Bocci's last night with friends. The side ceasar salad was 1/4 inch chop hardy worth $6.50. Two of us ordered veal parm and I was embarassed that I recommended this place. My grandma is Sicilian, and I like to think I know a thing or two about Italian cooking. I would throw down with Bobby Flay any time with my spaghetti and meatballs. It can be hard for me to eat Italian out, because so often it hits short of the mark. Came in for the Friday night prix fixe dinner @ Bocci's on 7th. Now let's get this out of the way....if you like your food haute couture, take yourself over to clarklewis or one of the many upscale rustic Italian restaurants around town. I like them too, but there is something about casual dining in a good old fashioned not-too fancy Italian restaurant, where you can kick back in jeans and a t-shirt and sip on a glass of decent but cheap chianti. (cue soundtrack Billy Joel's "Italian Restaurant"....) The dinner was an incredible deal: $18 for soup, salad, bread, entree and desert. Five courses for $18, folks. The salad was a ceasar with delicate bay shrimp on top....very generous portion of shrimp and salad. I am picky about salad, and this was not the usual cheap Italian bag salad with brown tips....this was freshly torn romaine in a perfect ceasar dressing with fresh and garlicy croutons. The soup was a delicious tuscan roasted vegetable soup....lots of crispy cabbage, which tells me it was made fresh today. Bread was noteworthy, because they brush it in butter before they pop it in the oven, and serve it piping hot with (my favorite) olive oil and balsamic vinegar on the side. I had the chicken picata, and my husband had the scallop and beaf skewers. both came with a perfectly cooked portion of polenta....crispy on the outside and creamy and almost cheesy on the inside....best ever. My chicken picatta was cooked perfectly, and had a great sauce with lemon zest and wine, although it was a bit over-capered for my taste. But, it was easy to push it to the side. Husband's scallops and beef tenderloin were equally delicious. I was already completely satisfied and thrilled to have found such a treasure in Portland....but then the desert put me over the edge: Best. Panna. Cotta. Ever. Period. It was creamy and cinnamon and berry and fabulous. The only reason I can't give it 5 stars is the ambience. Don't get me wrong, I love a good hole in the wall.....but a few red and white checked table cloths, a little Dean Martin music, some chianti bottle candle holders, and some of those cheap lights that look like grape bunches would really put this place over the top for what it is....one of the best old school Italian restaurants in Portland. Disclaimer: I am a total food snob. That said, I am very happy to enjoy mediocre food when it's reliably average and I know I'm paying for what I get. Also, to be fair, I've experienced this place more than once and for all the other times I would've given them 2 stars... Their spaghetti and meatballs are tasty if a little spendy. Today's take away experience taught me a valuable lesson. Always make lunch arrangements so as to happily avoid situations of last resort. Today's lunch special made me feel like I ought to be on the short bus for ordering it. Thick-sliced, pinkish (is that ham?), salty deli turkey meat, slathered in yellow chicken gravy from a can, all lovingly arranged on a bed of stuffing - made from leftover garlic bread... WTF? There was cranberry sauce which will remain untasted. On a positive note the celery pieces looked pretty in the stuffing. And whatever brand dressing they use is A-OK. It almost made the salad edible - anemic tomatoes, cucumber, and big handful of romaine butts hidden under the unhappy sprinkling of mixed greens. Ouch. I'd rate this meal experience right up there with really bad diner fare. Not the good bad kind, just bad. Staff are always really friendly, and they give you a fresh baked chocolate chip cookie with your meal. Totally adorable... and you'll appreciate the gesture more if you skip eating the cookie. I'll stick to cooking my own daily special from here on out, or just skip lunch. read more

My roommate and I stumbled upon Bocci's this weekend after seeing a "Now Open for Lunch" sign, and decided to give it a try. It is a quiant place, with a few tables to sit at. We were the only people in there at the time, which made it a little awkward. They had a fairly large variety of food that I didn't expect. My roommate had a calzone and I had a bacon cheeseburger with jalapenos put on it. He said his calzone was good, and my bacon cheeseburger wasn't bad. I'll probably come back to the place again and try something more original than just a burger. I recommend it if you are looking for a quiet place to enjoy a nice lunch. read more
