I have to admit, until Burger Week, I had no idea Say When served food. One of my favorite soups - French onion soup caught my eye right away. While some French onion soups are hit and miss, this was by far, the best one that I have ever devoured. No lie, no cap, no nonsense. So - I had to try the burger of the same name. It was delicious and while I enjoyed it, it was missing something - A gravy or something would certainly send this burger into my top 5 burgers. But wait... SOUP!! I had soup. So I dipped that burger into my French onion Aus Jus and enjoyed this burger on another level. Food for thought - bring this burger onto the menu and serve it in a dish of French onion soup.... Friends and I stopped in for a mini-meal on the last night of our vacation in Portland, and this place hit the spot! We ordered food at the bar, and didn't interact with staff much. The place was pretty quiet but that was fine with us! The oysters were really tasty, and we all felt fine afterwards. The baguette had salted butter that was filling as well. Very unique location! I had seen them on Instagram and as someone who loves French food, I was very excited to visit. I appreciate that it's super different from the other Portland spots that serve French food - it's chill, welcoming, feels a part of the neighborhood. Say When is a neighborhood hangout, has French food, and has sports screens. The French style of preparation and cooking influenced Portland's James Beard, then subsequently Julia Childs. A myriad of others. The program of Say When is the everyday food of France, not complicated high cuisine, which, of course France and restaurants throughout the world do using French food technique. French cooking can cook a tasty and filling everyday meal. I had the beet salad and the cassoulet. The beet salad was beautiful with a good puddle of salted goat cheese cream, the beets, topped with toasted crushed pistachios, thinly sliced radish, and fresh greens. I would say toasting pistachios loses their flavor and in this dish became more a texture. The cassoulet included white beans, asparagus, peas, a bit of duck, bacon, and toasted breadcrumbs. Both dishes were well designed and executed. Both dishes could be split between two. There are 10 booths designed for about 4, a long shared table, several 4 person tables, a long bar with stools, and the bar proper, for seating. There was nothing special about the utilitarian decor. They did have a projector for the back wall which would be visible to all. That opens the possibility of events. On my visit, order at the bar, bring your drink to your table, and the kitchen brings your food to the table. The owners have a history of gastropubs, so they know how to operate, and they have a pool of experienced and tested staff. The bartenders, server, and kitchen were customer oriented and all good. Casual! It's a bar with room for large parties. We stopped in after dinner for a drink. There's always room for French fries so we got those and the crème Brulée. Signage is at a minimum, so walking past here is easy. It's worth finding! It's a great destination for food snd drink. Very comfortable, modern design. The oysters were magnificently fresh and tasty, as were the deviled eggs. French fries were perfectly seasoned and served screaming hot. The duck confit was absolute perfection! Service was on point. Say When is a cute new addition to NW 21st in the Pearl District. It feels like the perfect neighborhood bar, it's quaint, cozy, western and has a laid-back vibe with pool tables in the back. The deviled eggs were one of my favorite things we ordered. The oysters were fresh, the steak frites was juicy and cooked perfectly, overall the food was much better than I expected from a bar! You order at the bar and they'll bring everything out to your table. While it seems geared toward late-night drinks and bites, I couldn't stop thinking that this place would make an amazing brunch spot too. The menu already feels halfway there! Went to see my son's roommates play in their pool table league they have a bar setting tables and they have the pool tables in the back with some arcade. Walked in and was immediately greeted by a friendly bartender. I looked around and saw a sign that said "order at the bar", so I did. Comfy bar stools, had a menu in my hand instantly. The menu is impressive and very reasonably priced! Got the French onion soup and it was delicious, but I couldn't drink just yet because it was early in the day and I had things to do. Watched the World Cup game on the tv behind the bar. The bartenders seemed like they were having a good time, as did the cooks in the open kitchen. This is such a perfect marriage of upscale food/cocktails in a more casual atmosphere, something I've been yearning for all my adult life. Great drinks and food without all the pomp and ostentation. I was so excited to try this place & I was not disappointed. The vibe is immaculate, fun mirrors, chandeliers, french movies playing silently on a projector all done in such a tasteful way. The food was yummy. I'm a sucker for french fries and deviled eggs and both were delicious. The bartender asked us if we wanted some aioli in addition to the ketchup for our fries and I thought that was a thoughtful touch. The beet salad with goat cheese was also so fresh and delightful. The drinks were detailed and executed perfectly. Specifically the almond croissant espresso martini Lastly the staff really made our visit. I believe the bartenders name was Savvy and we just loved her. She was sweet and had great suggestions. She can make one hell of a drink lemme tell you. What a delightful gem in Northwest Portland. It was created to be a friendly neighborhood restaurant, unpretentious and with great food and it really hits the mark. We loved the laid back atmosphere, part sports bar and mostly friendly neighborhood bistro with French films silently projected on the walls and pool tables and pinball machines out of sight in the back. Seating is mostly booths, which I really like and the service is simply ordering from the bar with delivery to our table. The main attraction however, is the food. In our travels in France we have had the ultra high cuisine of Paris and Provence but we loved the simple bistro food that we found everywhere and that is the theme here; well prepared and delicious food without the pretentiousness of foams and micro-portions. We started with a mixed green salad with a simple vinaigrette, refreshing and delicious. I had the steak frite, a delicious cut of perfectly medium-rare steak with a cognac peppercorn sauce coupled with a large mound of fresh fries. Absolutely delicious and only $23. I haven't seen beef on a menu lately for under $40 so this was a real surprise. My wife had the Beef Bourgogne hamburger. A perfect burger with mushrooms and bacon surrounded by a moat of Bourgogne sauce. So creative and so delicious. The check came in under the cost of a night out for pizza! Ooof--had big hopes for this spot. You walk in and a wave of disinfectant smell hits you right up the nostrils. Cavernous, no table decor, no ambiance. You see the cute lace curtains on the window and the great restaurant name and sign (and great font!), but then you walk in and... Lysol permeates the air. What are they trying to cover up? Then the bartender says, "Sit anywhere. Order at the bar." We sat down and there are TVs everywhere, like it's a sports bar cosplaying as a French bistro. So sad. We left before ordering. read more

I went for dinner last night and had the Beef Bourguignon Burger which was fantastic. The flavors from the wagyu meat and the bordelaise sauce were amazing. Highly recommend and will definitely be going back for more menus choices. read more
