FOOD: I got the House Special soup and it was lunch time! So I got the lunch prices! $9.99 for drink, food, and rice or noodles! Woot! I ordered the regular house minus the beef and started cooking once they set it down. They refill the bowl for you when the water evaporates too quickly and the fire is tiny but it really works wonders in boiling your food. The soup flavor is delicious. I really liked the price for the meal. At Jazz Cat, you get the same amount for $3 more (depending on the soup base) AMBIANCE: I came on a cold day outside and it was kinda cold inside but the soup really warms you up! Small place. Since my first visit in 2012, this Boiling Point location has remodeled and updated itself to look like the rest of the newer BPs with a modern, trendier design. We came for a super late lunch (early dinner?) around 4 pm on a Sunday afternoon. Expecting a wait, we only waited for a few minutes. I ordered my usual #4 Beef Hot Soup (mild spicy) with rice. Food seemed to be exactly the same as all the other locations; however, I just didn't find it as delicious. Maybe other things factored into my overall experience, such as the super cramped space. I felt like there was no room in between tables for servers to navigate through since all the tables were very close together (common issue in most BP locations). Service was pretty much nonexistent. I asked for two extra bowls after our food arrived and after 10 minutes of waiting, I assume our server forgot. Our water cups were also empty and no staff members seemed to be around, so Andrew W. went up to the counter to ask for my two bowls and more water. When we were ready for the check, we decided to go up to the counter and pay as well, since it seemed to be more efficient that way. There's a self serve condiment station and then there's a list of beverages you can order. i got the beef hot pot. guess what.. you only get 3-4 slices of beef in this hot pot! that's it! if you want more of any ingredients that'll be extra cost. aside from the very small amount of beef, they give you tons of napa cabbage, three thin slices of tofu, 1 fish cake ball, small chunk of imitation crab.. .that's all i can remember. I heard that this place gets crazy packed, so i went there around 5:00 -- no wait! This place isn't like other hot pot places where you cook the food yourself. With the taste of "stinky" tofu on the mind on a Christmas Eve the three of us found our way to Boiling Point. ... So, things learned. When you write your name on the list outside the front door make sure to notice you have to know the number next to your name as that is what they call. The wait was not that bad considering there was a 1/2 dozen or so before us. The general menu with drinks, hot pots and shaved ice does not list the ingredients in the hot pot. There for ask for the menu cards that do describe everything in the pots. There is a good amount of add ons you can do as well. The "stinky" tofu was pretty as well, with a bit of a spicey bite to it. I had the lamb with a spicy broth. The broth was nicely seasoned and the heat was just good enough you could get down with out breaking into a sweat. The downside is the service. It is not as much they are not attentive as it is they just are short staffed and your waiter is quite busy when you have a full house. They would do them selves a lot of justice with a host/busser who could watch for customers trying to wave down someone..anyone for some help. Lastely... With a taste for the shaved ice we go to order, and having looked at the pictures for 5 minutes we were ready for it as well. They were out!.... Ouch, WTF... Not my favorite type of hot pot, but not bad. I understand it's called "hot pot" and the restaurant is named BOILING POINT, but In my opinion, this was way too hot! I'm not a vacuum when I eat, but I hate having to wait for my food to cool down in between bites. I become impatient and the result is always a burnt tongue and a bad attitude by the end of the meal. For a party of 8, our wait was well over an hour. I would definitely not recommend this place for groups larger than 4. We had to split our party because the place is just not designed to accommodate large parties. The Japanese Miso is a safe choice. Literally tastes like Miso with various meats and veggies thrown in. If you don't like that stinky tofu taste, I wouldn't recommend the Special. The Beef is a good choice. Be warned: their spicy is pretty freakin spicy. I would stick to MILD if you want medium spicy. Free green or black tea during lunch. I ordered an additional Honey Milk Green Tea and it was REALLY good. All their teas were very well made. I'd come back just for the teas. The service was standard, but the girl that brought over my meal spilled HOT soup ALL OVER the table, drink, sauces, and napkins and didn't feel the need to acknowledge it. Food is good. Service is terrible. Price is okay. Walk in at about 9PM on a Sunday night with a friend and the place is full except for one dirty table. They see us; it's hard to hide in one big, open room... and we're standing there. Table of four picks up and leaves. Still standing there. Another table of four picks up and leaves. Three dirty, empty tables, and we're still standing there. My friend is asking if we should go elsewhere. We ask cashier dude what's going on -- "just a few minutes." Someone comes out and takes stuff off the tables, but doesn't wipe them down. We've been standing there for like 10 minutes. One table eventually gets wiped down with an overly-wet towel, and we sit down. Table service is the equivalent of, "what do you want?" I had the spicy beef, and my friend had the lamb. Mine was great, and she liked hers too. Loved the tiny sauces at the bar. Drinks showed up about 10 minutes after the food. I had a pudding milk tea (nothing to write home about), and she had the honey lemonade (more like lemon flavored honey--ack!). Had to ask them twice for the extra beef that we ordered. Food is good. I like boiling point but this location has two problems. 1. Some of the food was either molded or rotted. Sometime is the tofu skin, this time was the I BP fish cake. It had a unusual horrible taste. 2. Portion is inconsistent. Sometimes it's normal, sometimes you get a lot less of something. For example; the clear noodle, you get a few broken pieces, almost look like its other people's left over. Normal days, you get a spoonful. Always a wait here and service is meh... The seating is limited and it does take some serious work to track someone down to get our order taken. Then takes forever and a year to get food so by the time food is served, everyone is ravenously hungry. The flavor of the beef soup has never disappointed me! Service wasn't bad at all and the food came out quick as well. However, I'm actually not really writing a review in regards to the food or the service - both were average but always could be better. The only reason I'm writing this review is to complain about their cockroach problems. According to the reviews below, this isn't the first time but it should most definitely be the last. Halfway through my meal, a cockroach actually landed on my head. not crawling on the floor or poaching in my soup but actually fell on my head. And this cockroach, I swear, is the hulk of all cockroaches. I've had plenty of encounters with cockroaches and this one is definitely obese and probably feeding off of our hot pots. Seriously, this restaurant needs to do something about their bug problems before they open their doors to the public. And I'm positive there is more from where that cockroach came from. You can't really compare this to actual hot pot or shabu shabu because you do not cook the food yourself. There have been mix reviews on this one and to be quite honest, I had to go a couple of times to make my mind up before reviewing. I enjoy this place, period. The pot may seem small to some people, but for me, it's good enough. I am very full after I'm done eating. Between the bf and I we have gotten all their selections except for the last three, because those are the bigger and spicier pots. We don't add anything extra to our dish except for rice. Their spice level is impressive. Even their mild has a nice kick to it. Choose wisely! Beef, Fishball, and House are my faves. Their three sauces on the side are all pretty good to add to the meat. I came in (party of 2) on a Wed at 9pm...not a particularly busy time. Several parties were finishing up by the time we walked in, so we just (mistakenly) assumed it would be a short wait. However, after standing there for 45 minutes, never being acknowledged, and with the empty tables just sitting there never having gotten cleared....we gave up and left. Good luck to you when you're going. The 1st impression I had of this place is that it's pretty small. Didn't seem like it could service more than 50 people at once. The place gave off the impression that it's pretty clean. I showed up at 11:30a with a party of 7 adults and 2 kids and was seated quite promptly. I wish they had your traditional, conventional menus, but they must have been thinking 'outside the box' when designing their menus, as they had flippable tablets on tables for you to flip through and the 7 flavors of hot pot that they offer advertised on their wall. Since there were only 2 tablets for the 7 of us, it was annoying waiting my turn. Yet again, they really only have 7 options for what you can order in terms of 'food' food, so it was either wait your turn for the flip menu for details as to what's in your hot pot, or look at the big picture hanging on the wall. I got the lamb hot pot [which actually says 'Lamp' in the flip menus] and received more 'suan tsai' [pickled vegetables] than I did lamb. It was my stupid fault to leave the lamb in there for as long as I did because it ended up being tough. Oh well, lesson learned. The portioning was pretty good and I left with a satisfied full stomach. Others at the table all got the seafood and were generally happy with their selections. WARNING: Their beef, lamb, and house special pots come with 'pigs blood', so if you're wary of eating it, or flat out against it as my family is, it's something to consider and keep on the lookout for. The service was inexplicably slow. Seriously. It's called having pre-made pots and pouring broth, then putting it on a burner. I understand that even if it's not pre-made, 5 minutes tops. But 15 minutes? No reason. I don't understand why they're so slow in preparation. Also, only one server was really running the front side of the place, as 3 other 'workers' almost never made an appearance. There were some pretty frustrated customers as they all tried to flag down servers, but were promptly ignored. Still, the food's pretty good, and being a Chinese place, I'm no stranger to bad service. $8.99 for lunch that comes with a drink [green tea, black tea, or coke] and rice/vermicelli, and $9.99 for dinner without the drink. I'm a hot pot virgin. My first thought upon entry is "It stinks like swamp ass in here." Must be the stinky (aka fermented) tofu... fuck it, I'm in. Maybe swamp ass tastes like pancakes. I asked for it "medium spicy" and I can generally handle quite a bit of spice... it wasn't unbearable but I'd say it was more like "very spicy" which leads me to believe that their "very spicy" is only for people who like man vs food style challenges. I have no cussing idea what was in my hot pot because I am unfamiliar with hot pot. Despite the smell it was not nasty tasting at all (although it also did not taste like the aforementioned pancakes.) I'm pretty sure there was sliced beef, fermented tofu, enoki mushroom (I'm sure of this because I ordered an extra side of them,) Krab, corn, meatball, noodles, veggies/bok choy, and other items including some sort of fish cake with a pink skin, and something they called "tempura" so I have no idea what was actually in it but it was so delicious I will order a side of it next time. My soup came with rice, and the best tasting ice tea I've ever had. I ordered black tea but I think they brought me green tea... at any rate it was lightly sweetened and tasted like super strong jasmine. I would go back again just to get this. Another tasty item was the garlic soy dipping sauce which I poured into my hot pot and also used to dip my unidentifiable yet tasty food particles in. First timer here! But I was disappointed because I was extremely excited to try out their macaroons but this location doesn't have any yet...So, I settled for the hot pot! Not that the macaroons were the only reason I came here...Anyways, I was originally planning on ordering their Taiwanese Hot Pot Soup, but that one only came in the most spicy flavored and we just couldn't handle all that hotness. Instead, we decided to try out there Thai hot pot soup which was fairly spicy even for their mild level of spiciness. The hot pot came with a lot of sides and because its a bit bigger than some of the other hot pots (#1 - #4 i think), our order was $15. Decent, but a little bit on the pricier side. We also decided to add extra sides to the soup because without them, it would not have been enough to fill up 2 people. Maybe one person, but definitely not two. Because its now fall and the weather is starting to cool down, I know I will be hitting up hot pot joints more often and Boiling Point is still on the list of to-go places. I also ordered the Passion Green Tea drink and that turned out to be sweet and satisfying. It went well with the soup. I was too full to try their shaved ice but their portions seemed to big since I was really full from all the soup already. Sunday Night arrived at 6:15. I asked the worker how long was the was he said its about 30 to 45 minutes because there was about 4 parties ahead of us. After waiting about 20 minutes my friend and I got thirsty and I went to order us drinks first. I got a Honey Milk Tea and Green Milk Tea. I asked how long for the drinks the cashier told m about 5 minutes I told him my friend and I will be outside and he said he would bring it out for us. We got seated around 7:10 so the wait was almost an hour, the waitress came to take out right after we were seated, they don't have a wide selection of the menu so it was easy to order. After placing in our order she asked us what we would like to drink I told her I already order my drinks like 30-40 minutes ago. She ran to the back to talk to the supervisor and he came out and just looked at us and said whats the problem? I showed him my receipt and said he took my drink our 40 minutes ago and I never got it. He said "oh I forgot"....... No apology or anything. Terrible Service After placing our order it took about 30 more minutes for our food to come out. My friend and I both got the same thing #4 Beef Soup non spicy. It was nothing special, came with about 4-5 slices of beef, imitation crab, veggies, half a beef ball, vermicelli, rice, and a few other things. The one thing that was actually good was that they had their BBQ sauce. Very tasty After finishing our meal we asked for our Snow Cubes that we placed in when we order at the beginning. It was 5 cubes for about $3.50. We ordered 2 Strawberry, 2 Egg Pudding and 1 Matcha. The waitress came back to tell us that they ran out of Strawberry. Pretty ridiculous for they to run out, but we just told her to replace it for Matcha. The Egg Pudding Snow Cube was okay, just tasted like they threw in their Egg Pudding into the Freezer. The Matcha was slightly sweet and has a strong Matcha flavor, but a horribly bitter after taste. The seating is horrible, your literally sitting less than a foot away from the other tables, very cramped and crowded. It was uncomfortable to enjoy your meal, because you feel like your having your meal with strangers. You hear their conversation and they hear yours. I felt so uncomfortable. Being a local Arcadian, I've frequented this Boiling Point several times over the years and my opinion of Boiling Points isn't as good as it use to be. First of all the food is decent at best. The meat is not fresh. If you know anything about cooking and freezer burn, most of their meat has been stored in a freezer for who knows how long and dumped quickly into the soup when you order it without defrosting, causing the meat to be clumpy, dry and hard to pull apart. I'm not saying the food is BAD. It's decent, but not for the $11.99 for dinner and $10.99 for lunch. The drinks are good, but I wouldn't come here just for the drinks or even wait a hour for them. A meal for two with drinks quickly adds up to around $40. It really isn't worth the price for me. The Service I always have to wait anywhere between 30 minutes to an hour to eat here. 3 out of 5 times, my order was wrong and it took forever for them to fix the issue or even to flag down a waiter. Most of the time they forget the rice or noodles that come with the dish. As someone that wants to eat and leave in a timely fashion, this is not the ideal place for lunch or dinner. Ambience Loud pumping top 40 hits play constantly. My suspicion is that it's there to distract from the loud kitchen. Even so, it makes it incredibly hard to communicate with anyone. I like conversation with my friends during dinner, not yelling over music. The establishment is on the smaller size so I have to squeeze by other people enjoying their meals to get to and from my table. You'd think it would be easy to flag down a waiter, but that is not the case since they have tunnel vision and are constantly look down not up and around at who needs help. Parking The Boiling Point shares its parking with neighboring businesses. Depending on the time you go, it could be difficult finding parking. You might have to park a block or so down. Ending Thoughts It is unfortunate that this Boiling Point is one of the only hot pot places around Arcadia. Other than the one in Alhambra and the incredibly expensive other hot pot places in the mall or the pavilions plaza, this is one of the cheaper alternatives. Because of that, there will always be people coming here with a line out the door even though, the food is mediocre and not worth the wait. You go to one, enjoy the great experience, go to another, enjoy the experience, and then be surprised by a 3rd and talk about the experience, and see the subtle differences. The Arcadia location, unfortunately, does not measure up to Irvine and Monterey Park locations. It's a smaller place, yes, but the staff acts like it is overworked, despite the same amount of people who work at the other locations. The staff scurries from table to table, trying to get people in and out of the restaurant as fast possible, unaware that they are neglecting golden rule #1. Take care of your sitting customers as you would yourselves. I had to stand up and walk towards the kitchen before someone came by to see what I needed. And no, I don't need more water... I need more fire for my pot. *You know who you are.* (Minds out of the GUTTER, kids!) As to the food that everyone is craving and daring freezing temperatures outside for... meh, not as good. The Thai pot was pretty bland in terms of the flavor, and the actual spice / chili I was able to try burned out a lot of the other sauces and flavors I was adding in. Which also means you could not really taste anything more in the Thai plate than something akin to moist plastic. (That includes the taste of shrimp and crab.) The Lamb pot my friend was willing to didn't impress me as much either. At one point she pulled up her chopsticks to show me a some sliced meat and asked me if this was the beef or lamb (as she had ordered a lamb pot)... you could not tell by site or smell... only by taste. At the other locations, you could definitely enjoy the rich aromas that would waft in from the steam over the boil and entice your taste buds of future delicacies. Here.. not so much. The smell from the burning gel was just overwhelming. OVERWHELMING. We sat down and ordered food immediately but it took FOREVER. How long does it take to put together a hot pot? Thought you just threw the ingredients in, no boiling necessary in the kitchen, cuz oh wait! that'll happen at the client's table! Arrived here on a weekday around 1pm. Parking is relatively easy around this area of the neighborhood. The restaurant was still full at the time, so there was a short wait to get a table for two ready. On a nice summer's day, glad the place was AC'd. It's hot pot, but pre-made. As a result, it's not as fun (nor as efficient) as preparing the various ingredients on your own, but on the flip side, it's at an affordable cost. There are some customization as far as adding more items for an additional fee. In our case, we opted to add stinky tofu (or "fermented tofu" as listed on the menu). It's not fried, but boiled, so you don't get the same experience or flavor, and that's a shame. Ordered the broth served medium spicy, which hot level wasn't too bad, though I wished there was more flavor to it. Guess that's why they have a counter with 3 small pots of oils and hot sauce. The beef was indeed overcooked, so you might want to eat that right away. Service can be a bit off. I think they forgot we ordered the additional tofu, and had to call them over for the check. The hot pot comes with a free drink. No drink refills though. If you order a soda, they give you a cup of ice and a canned soda. I had the iced green tea, which is a tad sweet. It's an alternative if you want cheap hot pot. Otherwise, though it's probably worth it just to find a place where you can cook your own meat. read more

What the heck service!?! The wait is terrible. Service is slow. hotpot is a ripoff. My classmate works at the Hacienda Heights location and he admitted that they dump lots of veggies and hold back on the meats. Come here for the awesomely fresh shaved snow ice. It's magical. I love introducing it to people because you can see their mind being blow away. 6pm green tea shaved snow dessert here is the only way to do ;) read more

I swear, they've got some crack sprinkled on top of these hot pot soups. cause they got me coming back 2-3 days in a row. that says it all. if you haven't tried already..what are you waiting for.? you'll walk out of the restaurant HAPPY and SATISFIED every time. i share a bowl with my bf every time we eat, because 1 for me is too much.. the soup is amaaazing. it will fill you up. and it's not fattening ..lots of veggies mixed in. just a TON of sodium..which i absolutely love. read more

This is my favorite location. Somehow it's much better than the others. I always get the lamb hotpot . Super yumm. Sometimes the wait is a little long. Today I waited 30mins. Be careful of the spicy level of your soup. Good service . They also give stamp cards. Buy 10 soups get 1 free. For lunch they give you complimentary tea. I always heard Boiling Point has long line. I understood why after my first visit there this afternoon to the Arcadia location. There were empty tables but they didn't call customers in. My family told me it's the same situation in San Gabriel location. In this case, I think they deliberately let people wait outside the restaurant to make others think they are such a good restaurant with so many people waiting. They need to provide better customer services, not letting people wait so long. We waited more than 30 minutes for our table today. The hot pot is okay, nothing that unusual you can't replicate at home. It costs a dollar more for the hot pot here in Arcadia. I guess it's because of the location. The lunch comes with free green or black ice tea. No comment for these two drinks because what could you expect for something free? Perhaps ice water is even better. We didn't get the complimentary tadpole drink. read more

I have been to three locations (franchise, I presume) in 10 days. The one in Gardena and Irvine are both above par, but the one in Arcadia is a different story. More on that later. I will make some general comments first. Seven varieties of hot pots (with alcohol gel burner under the 10" shallow pot) Lunch $8.99 Dinner $9.99 Irvine (and maybe other high-rent locations) are $9.99/$10.99 The only thing that needs clean up is the pot, utensil, and table. All of the ingredients are already cooked and placed in the pot as the server brings it to you. Two locations used styrofoam cups for water (so no washing needed). This reduces labor cost. The pot is made of stamped/forged stainless steel, so there is no much to clean up, because there are no handles or rivets. The broth is fairly bland without the ingredients, but more flavorful than the typical Japanese shabu-shabu. Because everything is already in the soup, the meat is often overcooked. You may order side dishes à la carte to supplement what you already have. The items tend to range from $1 to $3. Today (1/4/2012) was a bloody hot day in the San Gabriel Valley. at 18:00, it was still 72°F. Maybe this was an excuse for the snowflake ice machine to malfunction, and many of the iced drinks and none of the snowflake ice dishes (dessert) were unavailable. My son thoroughly enjoyed the mango snowflake ice, so he wanted to have it again, but there wasn't any. What was up with the 65°F rice? I kid you not, the rice was cold. This joint is much much smaller than the other locations. I'd say it is only able to accommodate 25-30 people at a time. read more

One of my go to with my friends, they close around 11 so it's later than usual food places which is a good place to go to for late nights, the food is consistent and really good. My favorite is the beef, but the wait could be long sometimes. read more
