I use to love jazz cat since set menu hot pot places are pretty rare to come by now since AYCE is a better business model for a lot of hot pot places but over the years i feel like the quality gone downhill. The service was good as always but i feel like the quality in meat declined. However the set menu was large enough to make me feel satisfied towards the end of the meal. Great service, good beef and lamb, kinda limited selection for all you can eat but they are good ingredients and many options for the broth. They give you two choices for the sauce, and make sure you make a good choice because it's essential for your enjoyment. It's single pot for each person, no half and half option but you can change the broth for an additional $3. The broth is deep and even the spicy one is not spicy (or mild spicy, if you're leaning to the west). But they are not (waaay) less sodium, that's why sauce selection is really important. The name or the place kinda make you think it's like a bar, and the seating position kinda look like it with all booth pleather seats and all. The placement of the induction cooker is a bit awkward though since they are all side by side in the far center. Great for social eating i guess, but not so much if you're eating seriously. We've always enjoyed the shabu at Jazz Cat over the years - their ingredients never fail to be fresh and good quality, and the portions are generous with tasty sauces and a wide variety of broths to choose from.  You start by choosing your meat option, then the broth and sauce - and you can also add sides and snacks from the decent sized menu. I almost always go with either the Angus beef or premium pork selection. I also like to make sure I add an egg to my order - I love the creamy yolk when it's been poached in the broth and broken over the rice - YUM! You have two options when it comes to your meat/veggie ratios in the portions - regular or "T-rex". The "regular" option gives you more veggies and a "regular" serving of the meat while the T-rex option gives you quite a bit more meat. I can't say I see a difference in how much veggies you get with the T-rex - it almost looks the same as the regular and for the same price so it's a good deal imo.  The meats are consistent in their quality and always taste great to me with soft, delicate textures - sliced so thin they cook up fast in the boiling broths. I love to dip them in the satay sesame sauce (my fave one here). The veggies come in a surprisingly wide variety - cabbage, bok choy, some type of squash/gourd, zucchini, broccoli, baby corns, onions, and you even get a fish ball and imitation crab piece!  For the broth, I pretty much stick to either the pork bone broth (my usual) or the Japanese creamy miso if I'm feeling something lighter. I've also tried the tomato broth and the creamy milk/corn broth and they were good but not ones I'd get regularly (personal preference). The broths are all tasty but rather light and mild and could definitely stand to be a bit stronger in flavor. I almost always find myself wishing for a little salt or soy sauce.  The satay sesame sauce is complex and sooo flavorful with the peanutty satay complimenting the umami sesame profile and adding that much needed boost of flavor that's missing from the broths. The Japanese sesame and thai satay are also solid sauce choices.  The meals come with a bowl of rice but you can sub vermicelli noodles if you want. They also include a little portion of the noodles with veggies so you get both either way.  The vibes are sleek and modern with very swanky jazz-club style decor and intimate seating for your party. I love the cat theme too - even their hotpots have paws and ears - it's so fun!  Service is often a tad lacking - they're nice but inattentive and go long stretches without checking on you (even when they aren't busy). You almost always have to flag someone down for the check or just make your way to the front to pay. That's the main reason for my four star rating as opposed to five. Prices are decent for the quality and portions. And they also have an AYCE option! There's a decent sized parking lot in back of the building but when it's busy parking gets challenging - especially since they closed their San Gabriel location.  All in all this is a solid choice for shabu - we've been coming for years (my review is long overdue lol) and definitely will be back! read more

I have to admit this was our first choice however we were pleasantly surprised with our dinner. We were in Arcadia area, so knew there were a lot of choices for a hot pot let struck out at the first two since we didn't have reservations and the wait was extremely long. We found this place on Yelp and immediately went on the waitlist. We were seated immediately upon arrival. All the tables are booths within individual burners/pots for each person. They have an option of all you can eat and Ala cart. That all you can eat for an adult was $39.95 for dinner. My only complaint was we had to flag the server down each time we wanted something. They weren't really checking on you voluntarily. Once we did ask for an item, they did bring it promptly. The way this one works is: you pick your soup base which they have a lot of options. I chose the Japanese miso, which was so flavorful. Next, you choose two sauces. Now it's time for all the stuff inside starting with the meats. They didn't have any seafood on all you can eat menu. Next was the veggies. I didn't see bok choy on the menu, but we asked and they had it. Lastly, you can ask for noodles or rice. First time at the Arcadia location! Parking was a little hard to find but there's a lot in the back and you can only enter the restaurant from the back. Service was pretty good. We had a party of 8 and were seated immediately on a Saturday night at 6 pm. The first round of food came out quickly but the rounds afterwards took some time. Recommend the kelp and sukiyaki soup bases. You can also order multiple items at the same time for the ayce menu without limit. We didn't realize there was also green onions and garlic and some other condiments in the hallway so keep an eye out for that. We were seated right away and I noticed that there were only a few tables occupied around us. I ordered the pork bone broth with angus beef and t-rex portion. The t-rex portion basically just means more meat and less veggies whereas there's another option available where it's more veggies and less meat. I subbed the rice for sweet potato noodles instead (not sure if this was extra). My friend ordered the seafood essence and I tried some and I regret not getting it so this will definitely be a next time thing. You can also choose your sauce from their menu. I got the sesame satay! You can also ask them for a free side of garlic and green onion to add into your soup. The portions were pretty generous. There's maybe about 6 pieces of full napa cabbages, baby corn, tofu, onions, imitation crab, a bit of noodles, broccoli, a fish ball. My party arrived at Jazz Cat around 6:00 PM on a weekday and experienced no wait to be seated, which was a great start to our visit. The staff greeted us warmly and promptly asked whether we preferred the a la carte or all-you-can-eat dining option. We chose the a la carte option, and it ended up being more than sufficient for everyone in our group. For our meal, we ordered the Japanese Spicy Curry soup base in the T-Rex style (more meat, fewer vegetables) and the Japanese Miso soup base in the regular style (a balanced portion of meat and vegetables). When comparing the two broths, the Japanese Miso soup is more flavorful, as in saltier (in a good way!) where the Japanese Spicy Curry was more mellow. Regardless, both broths were flavorful and enjoyable. One tip for future diners: opting for the regular style may be the better value. The T-Rex style does not provide a significantly larger portion of meat when compared to the regular option, making the upgrade less worthwhile. We also tried the Japanese sesame, ponzu, and Thai satay dipping sauces. Each complemented the hot pot ingredients well, and we were satisfied with all three selections. All the other items (broth, quail egg and meats) were pretty standard and nothing too different than from other hot pot places, but still really good. Ordered the chicken once to try and it was better than expected (but still focused on beef and lamb for money worth). DON'T get the pork. I tried it so you don't have to!! It was dry and the chicken tasted better. Didn't try the seafood add on so can't speak for it. Was already getting stuffed from the reg menu. Sauce wise, I like the ones with sesame in it. Kinda wish there was a sauce bar available like how some hot pot places do it. Jazz cat gives individual portions of veggies and sides you ordered. It helps me to try more things. Came here on a Saturday at 4pm, it was pretty empty. I remember it used to be so busy. I'm happy I got to try their AYCE option (~$40). I got the Milky Miso Broth which had a great creamy miso flavor. My partner got the Spicy Pork Broth which was a bit bland. They have a variety of sauces, i got the spicy sesame, ponzu, sesame satay, and satay. My favorite was the sesame satay. There are 5 options for the meats: beef short plate, pork, lamb, chicken, and prime angus. We mostly got the prime angus because it was the best out of all of them. Their meats are okay quality. There are lots of veggie options. The restaurant is clean, they still have the same decor inside with the tall black booths and the far to reach stoves. Overall, I wouldn't get the AYCE option again unless they expanded their meat range, but I know they aren't as busy as before so that may be difficult. I would just get their T-REX option next time. I finally got the chance to try this hot spot restaurant! I recommend checking in on Yelp prior to arriving to the restaurant so your wait time is less. I came on a Friday night, and we were first on the list to be seated, but it still took about a 20 minute wait to be seated. In addition, there was another party that was seated before us which was kind of odd. Other than that, they took our order fast and the soup and toppings came out really fast too. I like this place because they're individual pots per person and you get to choose your soup base. They have over 10 soup bases to choose from, many different meats, and sauces to choose from. The booths are kind of tight if you have a party of 5-6, but when I went it was just my friend and I so we had plenty of room. The restaurant is pretty dark and the booths are high. The restaurant is narrow and feels like an endless hallway. I went ahead and tried the hot Thai soup base, beef as my choice of meat, and Japanese sesame dipping sauce. I was not a big fan of the soup base, it was really spicy and had a little bit of sour taste to it. It is not your typical Tom Yum soup base though. My friend got the Curry base and I thought that was interesting as a soup base, but I actually really enjoyed it and would come back for that. Tried their all you can eat. We went around lunch time for the $27 price for the regular menu the main difference we saw for regular and premium is the seafood. The servers were nice and we were seated quickly. The portions were pretty good. There is a lack of meat variety but if you just want a cheap AYCE it's a good place to go, drinks not included. I remember back in like 2015 when this was THE spot to get shabu shabu, so it was nice stopping by here twice within the last two years. The decor in here is a bit dark and drabby but I think that's the aesthetic they were going for. They were ala carte for as long as I can remember, so it was super exciting to see that they now offer an AYCE menu! I will say though, their menu is quite limited in both proteins and vegetable options. On the other hand, their soup base selection is probably the largest one I've ever seen! The service here was super friendly and they always check up on you throughout the meal. I got the sukiyaki broth, and loved the angus meat. I paired mine with some enoki mushrooms, udon, and onions. Perhaps my friend and I should have opted for ala carte because we barely were able to finish two plates each. The parking lot isn't super large and is shared with a handful of other businesses but we were lucky to find a spot close to the restaurant. I've been to this restaurant twice before writing this review. Both times I went on a weekend and had to wait about 20 minutes before being seated. I ordered their chicken donburi and beef donburi. The food is decent. The portion size was way bigger than I expected too. I did like their large amounts of chicken/beef in each of the donburi. The meats were cooked well and overall better than I expected. I'm giving this place a 2 star over 3 star because of the ventilation. For a place that mainly serves hotpot, there is no ventilation inside the building. It is permanently stuffy as if they didn't turn on any of the vents. Even worse is that they do not even turn on air conditioning. The building feels like a giant hotbox. After the second time, I swore I would never come back again. I also personally do not recommend coming here either until they fix it. read more

2.5/5 stars (Vegetarian here, plant-based/vegan review included): Honestly...I'm conflicted. I wanted to love this restaurant because there were so many vegan and vegetarian broth options, but couldn't. I'm also confused by how Jazz Cat was able to maintain a high Yelp rating over the years. I called in to make a reservation on LNY & confirmed the time for 7:00 pm. However, when I arrived, the waiters were confused about our reservation saying they don't accept phone reservations and only go by the Yelp waitlist. They suggested that I called a different location and it was only until I showed them the phone number I dialed, did they believe that I called the right store. They eventually got things sorted out and let us to our seats. Aside from that rocky first impression, we were excited to finally try this classic hot pot spot for the first time. Unfortunately that was short-lived. We ordered four different soup bases: Taiwanese Satay (meat), Premium Kelp & Chinese Herbal (meat), Chinese Herbal (vegan), Mongolian herbal (vegan). The Taiwanese Satay was oily but lacked any depth in flavor, and all three herbal broths tasted like bitter water. The waiter recommended the Mongolian herbal and the Yuzu sauce (vegan) so I had hoped they'd be good choices, but even as someone who generally does not like my food too salty, I really think boiling some veggies in plain hot water would have been tastier. At the very least, it wouldn't have been bitter. The pros for my fellow vegetarian/vegans: The staff are knowledgeable about the vegetarian and vegan options. The veggie sets came out after the meat sets so we even received cute placards so other waiters could easily identify which pots were still waiting for the vegan items. The veggie set was also abundant and came with nice details like perviously frozen but thawed out tofu that would soak up the flavor of the broth better, and some nice variety of the veggies themselves. There's also three sauces that are vegetarian friendly (and at least one that's vegan, the Yuzu), which hasn't been the case for some other hot pot places I've tried. The interior is also dark and spacious, and they have nice cushy seats. Since each seating area is like a little booth with tall chairs, it does feel private even though the space is shared. However, for hot pot, the only part the restaurant really "makes" is the broth since you're cooking the meat and veggies yourself. So I couldn't really justify a high rating when none of our party enjoyed our orders. It's possible we could have ordered poorly, that it was an off day for them, or that we aren't the target audience for this restaurant. But frankly, after this experience I think you might be better off making your own hotpot at home yourself, rather than paying $100+ post tip and tax. Perhaps the restaurant can review its extensive broth menu and remove some of them that aren't as popular or could be improved on, and focus on making sure that the ones they have remaining to maintain the quality they're looking to serve to customers. read more
