Well well well. Another great coffee place makes its mark in Florida. This time in Jacksonville. Whoa. Great coffee, warm atmosphere, friendly peeps. I could have stayed here for hours. I indulged in a cappuccino with their homemade chocolate syrup. They really tried to convince me to go with the spicy chocolate, their signature syrup, but that just isn't my thing. The cappuccino I did get was exquisite; bold flavor, sweet but not too sweet, with lovely foam art. Deliciousness! Their coffee is always perfect. You do not have to add anything. Their craft beer selection covers all bases of taste. The baked goods are from Knead Bake Shop (yum!) and they are usually gone by evening. I just adore stopping in after lunch, mid morning, after a late evening meal or anytime I am in the Riverside area. Everyone working here is always smiling and so helpful. If so this isn't a difficult choice; go, now. If you have never been, drop what you're doing and go experience some of the best coffee of your life. If you don't like coffee....you're doing life wrong and you should seek professional help. Seriously though this place is amazing, coffee is their craft and to them the creation is an art form. The please is the embodiment of coffee; from the smell of freshly roasted coffee when you walk in, to the friendly and extremely knowledgeable staff, to the perfection of their espresso, to the literal art in the foam on their drinks, this place does coffee right. They hand make all their own syrups and they are all amazing, they even cycle a monthly "specialty" syrup that is normally a little odd sounding but utterly delicious. The real star here is their espresso, it is the best espresso I have ever had the pleasure of drinking; and how they get there is a process. They work closely with all the growers of their beans, they do all their own roasting, and they put a lot of effort into trying their staff; all for that perfect cup of coffee. The only real downside to Bold Bean is a result of their immense popularity. They are often extremely busy, resulting in a noticeable wait time of 5+ minutes for coffee when they are really slammed. On top of that seating can be hard to come by (again, only when they are slammed) but overall I've never had to wait for a table if I'm willing to not be too picky. It's hard to really count popularity as a "downside" since it just speaks to how awesome this place really is. The only real thing I wish they would do is to put some good outside seating in. They currently only have two small round tables and a few chairs. I realize that space is limited and most people probably like sitting inside but I love outside seating (which their Beaches location has). Nothing like sitting in the sunshine, reading a good book, and sipping on an iced vanilla latte. read more

Warning! Hipster alert! You will find young, unkempt white kids with Obama shirts and dreadlocks in this coffee shop! Seriously, laptops might have out-numbered patrons. I'm surprised there wasn't a kid in the corner with a stack of vinyl and a freakin' turntable. Tried to order a Honduran iced coffee, but to no avail. They only offer slow drip coffee, whatever the balls that is, for their iced coffees. So all the delicious sounding blends on their board weren't available for me because I wanted my coffee cold. I would think that in a state where the average temperature is "devil's scrotum," the iced coffee selections might be a little more expansive than ONE. Jussayin'. While waiting for the coffee, I slipped away to the restroom to wash my hands only to find the sink wasn't working. No running water and now I'm stuck with soap on my hands. Awesome! Got my coffee, added some creamer and sweetener. Verdict? It was OK. If I lived in JAX, this would not be a regular spot for me though. I'd rather hit up Dunkin on the flipside of the river and stick to visitng coffee shops down here in Tampa where variety is king. Baristas were friendly and that's the only difference between a 1 and 2 star in this instance. Hip atmosphere, great coffee, even better hot chocolate! Walk in and you are greeted by a floor to ceiling chalkboard with their menu. Their pastries, pretzels, and cookies are all great - if they have lemon poppyseed scones, leave one for me! They always do something fancy with the cream in the coffee, designing artful motifs that greet you along with the delicious aroma of their roasted beans. This is an artisan coffee shop I believe, roasting their own beans and possessing their own recipes. This place is so popular that you sometimes have to be a vulture for seating - this has happened twice to my wife and I - at least it means they will probably be here for quite some time! If you are in the area, or like us just want some good coffee and don't mind the trip, check this place out! You will not be disappointed. read more

I love this non-encroaching space. I feel like I can get away when I am able to get into the dessert case for my own snacks! There are interesting things around the walls on display and for sale. While people think of a coffee shop as a place to get things done: homework, project proposal, chat, this is a wonderful place to be aimless thanks to the art surrounding the spot. The employees are so helpful. Almost like a bartender, I was able to tell the person at the register that I wanted something hot but non- caffeinated. And while the usual suspects were presented, an alternative I never considered was also offered: steamed milk with flavored syrup. The clouds came open and I finally saw God as I've been trying to find a hot and sexy drink that wouldn't keep me up all night. The place has a chill vibe to it. Relaxed atmosphere, space to work and access to wifi. Cozy and homely feeling to it. I could see myself milling around all day sipping on coffee. But the first day I went when I tried the cappuccino, didn't really care for them. Returned again, tried a few other drinks. Just nothing was hitting the spot for me. The taste of their brews just don't seem to be right for me. I probably will continue going here for quick snacks and interactions with some other friends I met up with there. Ideal atmosphere. Outstanding beer selection. High end espresso equipment. I had two lattes. My first was half scalded: almost too hot to drink, with that thin liquid consistency you get as a result. I figured it was a fluke, so I ordered another with exactly the same result. So obviously there's a training or quality control issue, which is a shame. So 2 1/2 stars for the latte, which rates it a little below Starbucks, but I'll rounded up due to the very nice atmosphere. read more

Bold Bean is Jacksonville's countercultural coffeehouse scene with experienced Baristas that will pour you a Latte with Art, Macchiato, Cappuccino, Americano, or Espresso. They also have Hand-Brewed Single Cup pour-over coffee which is made using the Pour-Over technique that is growing in popularity on the West Coast. At Bold Bean, they roast their own coffee and you will see their roaster and sacks of coffee beans in the back. On my recent trip to Jacksonville, I wasn't going to settle for Hotel Coffee so I drove over to Stockton Street to check out Bold Bean. There is a large chalk board menu that included pour-over, but I settled on a Latte. Erin, their Barista poured me a perfect cup with a great design. It was no Jackson Pollack, the way my attempts at Latte Art turn out. I bought a 1lb bag of their Bold Bean Sweetspot Espresso. I enjoyed my cup of coffee, a nice flavor, body and not much acidity or aftertaste. I got their dark roast coffee beans and this clearly does not look like a dark roast... medium roast at most. The beans doesnt look blackened, and doesn't have that oil that glosses the surface. It also tastes acidic. I'm disappointed. read more

Definitely Jacksonville's premier independent coffee chain. Although it does go along with the "indy coffeehouse" stereotype (a little crunchy, super friendly staff who take a lot of time with each customer, causing a really long line...), they do cater to a higher-class clientele, with a respectable craft beer selection and coffee that's a tad more expensive than Starbucks. The taste of the coffee, however, far eclipses the acidic sludge that is Starbs -- so much so that you don't mind paying a little extra for a hand-crafted honey lavender latte (which will elevate your taste buds to a new level when it comes to drinking coffee). This location is a little on the smaller side, so it's advisable to go during non-peak hours, especially during the pandemic. In short, if you want a fancy cup of coffee in Jacksonville and don't care for the 'Bucks, Bold Bean is your jam. read more

The coffee is good, the people are friendly and it's a cool spot to hang out. However, my biggest criticism is they have 1 or 2 plugs in one corner and that's it. So if you wanna hang out and do work for an hour, do not count on being able to charge your phone or computer. Great place to write and work. The atmosphere is fairly typical gentrifying hipster cafe, but in all the good ways (exposed brick, local artwork, post-industrial aesthetic). Staff is fantastic, great coffee, and they make a cortadito properly, served in a glass with a side of sparkling water. This coffee thing of mine is getting bad! Last week, in only 48 hours, I needed to fly to Jacksonville, FL; rent a car; drive to Tallahassee for two days of politicking; then return back to Jax and fly home to Miami. No time to seek out specialty coffee with a schedule that packed, right? Actually, yes. There was time for two visits to Bold Bean Coffee Roasters; which was all the time I needed to know that the specialty coffee scene in Jacksonville, FL is in good hands. The Riverside location of Bold Bean was right off I-10 in a really great space that has that third-wave feel with exposed brick and the works of local artists displayed on their walls. On Tuesday morning, there was a nice flow of customers and they were being handled very smoothly by the staff on hand. First up for me was an espresso of their SweetSpot blend. This is stellar stuff. Not overly tangy, no sourness, just really smooth and deep espresso. I always love to have an espresso AND a pour-over when I'm in a new shop as it gives me a chance to try two different offerings. Bold Bean was offering two single-source coffees as pour-overs: Their Costa Rican El Alto and an Ethiopian Borana Bule Hora. I opted for the Costa Rican first and it was fantastic. Ben was on the pour-over stand and was indicative of everyone I met at Bold Bean in my first two visits: warm, knowledgeable and passionate about their craft. I poured the tail end of the Costarican in a to-go cup and hit the road to Tally. Side note: Sadly, I had plans to visit Atomic Coffee in Tallahassee, but the owner's untimely death meant that all locations had been shuttered. My condolences to his family. I look forward to hearing about how the coffee scene in Tally rebounds. On my way back from Tally, I made sure to leave with enough time to go back to Bold Bean for one more round. Okay, two. This time, after another SweetSpot espresso, I went with the Ethiopian. It was stellar. I was in the middle of a month of trying different Yirgacheffe coffees at home, so this one - although from a different region - was an interesting contrast. The barista on Wednesday was Joe, who is a champ, literally. He competes nationally and has it in his blood. We ended up talking about coffee until I felt like I was probably being a distraction. And I had a flight to catch. Next time you're in Jax - make sure to give these good people and their great coffee a visit! read more

Bold Bean Coffee Roasters is located down in the Riverside area of Jacksonville. When I went there, the street it was on didn't seem to be overly busy and there was plenty of free street parking right out front (I went on a beautiful Saturday morning). There was a decent sized line, but the staff was able to get people served relatively quickly without making anyone feel rushed to order. There is a good amount of spaced out seating to maintain social distancing during COVID while still remaining inviting. I really loved the chill vibe in Bold Bean! It's definitely a very hipster/modern feel you often find in many coffee shops. The added little touches of succulents and artwork was what really helped put it over the top for me. I ordered a cold brew and a chemex brew to go. Be warned that the chemex will get you two coffees if you get it to-go. I wasn't really thinking when I ordered it, but it gave me an excuse to hang out and enjoy the atmosphere while I finished the first cup. They even have a little bookshelf with books and board games in you are looking for a way to spend time hanging out in the cafe! First Impression Review: I know coffee but I'm not exactly a coffee connoisseur and this was my first time here. I've heard good things and was hoping on finding a real coffee house atmosphere with REAL coffee (& a nice tea selection). The menu is right to the left of the entrance, nicely spelled out with large font. The thing was, I didn't see any of the signature latte flavors other Yelpers raved about on the menu. I asked the barista manning the register about a recommendation for a first-time visitor...and he gave me the stupidest look as if I asked him why the sky is blue. I didn't mean to be easily insulted--I'm usually not--but c'mon! This is my first time here! After he quickly listed off the different latte flavors they had I settled on the spicy chocolate (mostly because I didn't catch the other flavors he said and I knew that one was a popular flavor). The spicy chocolate latte was excellent and it was definitely "spicy"--none of that weak stuff other places serve where the "spice" is cinnamon and nutmeg. I could see the cayenne pepper bits floating in my latte after sipping away my latte art. I'll give this place another go. The service was okay. Based solely on my first human interaction in here, they seem like coffee snobs. Not exactly friendly in my book. But maybe I came in on an off day--everyone has one of those. Love that they have almond milk and unique syrups like curry and ginger... they even have beer! The atmosphere and interior is very hip/trendy with a good amount of seating. There are a couple tables for outside seating as well. Easy to locate and parking has never been an issue. I always take out of town visitors here and they love it. On a Tuesday morning, we grabbed one of the few open tables in the airy space. The vibe was industrial chic and equally conducive to working or chatting with a friend. My cappuccino was among the better I've had with flavorful, vibrant espresso complementing the richness of the foam. I enjoyed the morning there so much there that I returned with another group in the afternoon. This time I tried the tangerine "gnarbucha" on tap which was again delicious. The only drawback to the space is that the fans create a strobe effect with the ceiling lights that make it difficult to concentrate at certain tables. In any case, I would definitely hang out at Bold Bean if I lived in the Jacksonville area. Pro tip: use the second bathroom for a cool mural and exposed brick wall. read more

As soon as you walk into this spot, you can smell the coffee greatness that is Bold Bean. I've never been disappointed by a tea or coffee drink here, and they offer beer as well. The decor is tasteful and minimalistic, I really dig the guy with a super long beard printed on the wall on the way to the restrooms. Can't find seating indoors? If its a nice day, fear not- there are tables out front and out back. Minus a star for failing to maximize seating, or make weatherproof outdoor seating. This place can get packed with WiFi campers on laptops sometimes. Still- Go bold, go bean. A must try in one's tour of DAT jax life. read more

Bold Bean is a long time favorite. I love the atmosphere at each location. They are all unique to the local neighborhoods. I also love that Bold Bean is truly a local business and they roast their own beans. Their espresso is the sweetest and smoothest I've tasted. Their syrups are also homemade which is amazing to taste but also for our health since they aren't full of those unnecessary chemicals. I've been regularly frequenting Bold Bean for about 4 years because it's that good. My only recent complaint is that there's an issue with consistency.
