Most reviewers have stated "this isn't real Indian food" I'm guessing the address in Los Angeles USA didn't give it away. If I wanted REAL Indian food I would travel to India. I want Indian food as it is presented to me. I want Indian food as I believe the culture is. Flavorful, helpful, friendly, and hospitable. Bombay palace has presented all of these. I've been to Mexico and now I prefer Tex-Mex even more than I did before. Maybe if I go to India I may not like Bombay Palace anymore... Or maybe it might be a colloquial standard. Dining in. Took 1 hour for food to arrive. We would ask our server (aka female owner) questions and she would be rude, dismissive, or nod her head side to side. Passive aggressive behavior. We asked for bread and she brought it for us after 1 hour of sitting and said it will only come with the food. Understaffed. I am honestly surprised that Covid and all the restrictions did not remove this place. I guess the high margins with overpriced food for the portions plus understaffing have kept its doors open. To be fair to the cook, the food was good, however the portions were child size. I, and anyone I know will no longer go here. Bombay Palace has the best Indian food, served by a great family! I love Harveen and her husband, daughter and sister--they are warm, attentive, and personable. If you like to keep to yourself, they don't intrude, if you want a little conversation, they are happy to oblige you. The dining room is spacious and peaceful and they've had outdoor tables during covid. Harveen knows my order by heart. I get the yellow dal, the eggplant, okra and rice with peas. This combination is fantastic and I have enough leftover for another meal. My husband gets the chicken biriani and garlic naan, which smells incredible. Once you eat here, you will be disappointed when you go elsewhere. Even when we were living in NYC for a few months, we never found a better Indian restaurant. read more

READ BEFORE GOING!!! CRIMINAL OWNER!!! If I could give this restaurant 0 stars, I would. The reasons are as follows: Prices are exorbitant relative to the portion size. Entrée portions are appetizer sizes. The food is average. My wife got a $5 fountain soda (that is crazy!!!) and it was flat and the syrup tasted aged/bad Owner charges a 20% "service charge" on the food and beverage which is included in your subtotal, which the customer is taxed on. I do not believe that the service charge was disclosed on the menu Owner/Host/Waiter asks for an ADDITIONAL TIP on top of 20% "service charge". I kindly and calmly pointed out to the owner that the service charge should not be taxed since it is a tip after paying the bill (only a $3 difference on our bill). The owner then initiated an argument with me and embarrassed me, my wife and himself while doing so. Immediately after walking out I hopped on yelp / google reviews to see if others had the same experience with the owner and others had a similar experience. Others described the owner / restaurant as rude, misbehaved, belittling, overpriced, d**khead, scam, ripoff, shady, uncomfortable, crook, jaded, hostile. Despite some of the negative reviews I see here, I really enjoyed the food here! The dishes were packed with flavor and even though the prices are a bit higher than competitors, the ambiance and food makes up for it. This is the fanciest Indian restaurant I have visited. The restaurant has big glass windows and the walls have cultural statues in each pocket. It's lit so the whole restaurant has a romantic vibe. We started off with a few drinks and I absolutely loved the Bombay special drink which had pineapple and coconut rum? It was a combo drink! We also got the kabob appetizer platter that has moist chicken, lamb, and sausage. This was a really good appetizer and it's even better with their house made yogurt sauce... their cucumber yogurt is one of the best I have tried. We got a five currys to share between four people with garlic naan and rice. The curry portion looked small but it was sooooo filling! We got chicken tiki masala, lamb, lobster, eggplant, and chickpea curry. Chickpea curry was sooooo good !, the classic chicken tiki masala was my favorite, but all the currys were so flavorful. I highly recommend the garlic naan and the nut fruit naan. It was a really nice Indian cuisine dining experience. Service was a tad bit slow but everyone was very friendly! read more

Terrible customer service! Went to try out their lunch buffet, which they advertised as closing at 3:00. Came at 2:40 and the waiter, who was very unpleasant and disrespectful, told me they were closed...as if I walked in at 3:15! Then when I proceeded to mention their listed closing time, he walked away from me before I could even finish my sentence. Wow! what a treat, I've never been to a fancy Indian restaurant before but decided to venture out and give this place a shot. I went on a Sunday night and it was fairly empty but the staff was very attentive and ready to serve. I tried a few different dishes that they recommended including the lamb curry, the meat platter appetizer and of course got my favorite the chicken tikki Marsala. I have to say I was a bit shocked when they brought it out because the portions looked really small but wow they really pack a lot into those small bowls. I truly enjoyed the food here and the service was great, our server who was the owner a well mentioned that they are one of the only places nowadays that still use a brick oven to cook their bread, how cool is that?! read more

There is no denying that this is quite a beautiful restaurant. The service is wonderful as well. I was so torn when I began writing this review. I wanted to give more stars, but somehow, I just couldn't because of the price per entree v the portions of each dish. Somehow I could not justify it. The ambiance is wonderful, probably the best that I've seen in ANY so cal located Indian restaurants. Again, it was the portion sizes of the entrees that prevented me from awarding more stars. The dishes that we ordered were the butter chicken, tandoori salmon, palak paneer, a potato based pancake-like appetizer, rice and a few different desserts. We also had garlic naan. Anyway, back to my experience. . . The butter chicken's sauce was so delicious. I've not enjoyed butter chicken like this in a very long time. However, it wasn't large enough for 4 of us to share. Well, I guess it was but we each only maybe got 2 chunks of chicken each. I believe the dish was about $20 or so. The tandoori salmon was about half of a filet of salmon. It was pre-cut into three pieces. So, there was a person in our group that didn't get a piece at all. The pieces weren't large enough to share really, either. That was disappointing for $24.95! The salmon was nice but was too dry for the linkings of all those at our table. The paneer was good but again, it wasn't enough to share amongst the 4 of us. We ordered a few desserts: mango ice cream, flourless carrot cake with coconut-pineapple ice cream and rice pudding. The mango ice cream was good. The flourless carrot cake is NOT something that I would order again. It was too grainy and gritty. It looked like a bright orange pat of mush on a warm plate that was accompanied by a white pat of mush on it, the ice cream. The flavors were good and e everything but the textures were all wrong with the desserts. I think for the fact that this restaurant has been here for almost 3 decades and it is located in the ever popular city of Beverly Hills, I was expecting a lot more. I had to ask several times for water, for our table. That was a tad irritating. The flavors were really quite good but it just isn't enough to get me to return anytime soon. I think I posted a good ten photos. I hope that they help. I don't know that this is the #1 Indian restaurant in LA but it's definitely not bad. If money isn't an issue and you are looking for something delicious, home cooked and authentic, I think this could very well be the place for you. Enjoy. read more

Previously successful restaurants die slowly. First the regulars stop coming, then the tourists and the unsuspecting come in and get fleeced. Eventually you accidentally make an unneeded reservation on a Saturday night because it's in walking distance to a theater where you're seeing a show. The Bombay Palace is still nicely decorated and the ambiance is still alluring. Unfortunately, they have become jaded and hostile. The food has lost it's luster and freshness because it isn't being turned over fast enough: The lamb is tired and a day or two away from being putrid, the liquor bottles sit 3/4 empty because they don't have back-ups and only replace them when the are poured out. The waiter is also your busboy, because he doesn't make enough in tips to pay-out a coworker, the manager is the host and the bartender. They add 20% to all checks and hope you don't notice when you add your tip (we didn't) Please shut this down and move on. It's miserable and disheartening to sit in a dead and empty clip joint on a Saturday night. Play the Indian Version of Taps and bury this one.... read more

Went to this place for a friend's birthday this past Tuesday. Place was dead and felt the waiter was rushing when taking our order. I asked for Jain style, no onion and no garlic and the waiter tells me I'm not Jain. I eat a certain diet and he didn't have to comment like that, esp if I was Jain, wouldn't have been nice because how does he know? The food was small portions, not very good and overpriced. Lovely decor but that's the best part. Tandoori chicken that you'd have thought was a basic mainstay was dry. I was enmeshed talking to my friends and would have returned it if I'd been paying better attention. We ordered spinach as a side dish, we thought, without looking at the menu, and no one liked what we later were told was a main dish because there are no sides. OMG a METAL PIECE in my friend's horrible tasting kulfi..... damn these guys and look at the excuse the lady manager says "ohh that was not in the kulfi, but somehow got in from the knife we used to cut the kulfi bar" ...excuse me I give a damn from where the piece came from but if my friend would have had it he would've probably ended up in a hospital. I asked them to make it medium spicy and they put red chili powder on it after cooking it, so dumb cooking. taste : HORRIBLE. The absolute worst experience I've ever had at an Indian restaurant. The food was average at best. The service was mediocre, and slightly snotty (but hey, it's Beverly Hills woooo! *rolls eyes*). When I walk into any Beverly Hills-y Beverly Hills establishment, I pretty much expect higher-than-average prices, and I'm OK with it. But the prices here are RIDICULOUS given the quality and the quantity of the food. Most restaurants in the area attempt to make up for shitty quality by providing a "trendy" ambiance (which is usually some gimmicky hook), but the layout/decor and general atmosphere of this place was no different (and in many ways worse) than even some mom and pop owned joints in Van Nuys (with all due respect to Van Nuys). Oh, and when we asked for our remaining food to go, they forgot to pack half of it (like the $5 bowl of PLAIN yogurt and the $3 pieces of tiny cardboard pieces that they call "naan bread"). I can't speak to how authentic the dishes were because I don't really know Indian food, but my English friends all seemed very happy. Appetizer portions are generous, main courses are not. We had a large party, but it was a weeknight and there were only two or three other small tables in there at the same time... over the course of the THREE HOURS it took them to get us through dinner. They repeatedly had to be reminded about drink orders (like, not two or three times - more like ten or twelve), the three servers were just standing around talking most of the time, not even bothering with us, and took forever to get someone to take our order. Someone please tell me -- is this part of the tradition in India? Leave the table alone until they snap/scream/beg for you to do something, and then wait til they ask about three or four times to make sure they're serious? read more

The food is good but the place is incredibly dirty. I've been going there for the last three years but only at night. Today I went and it was still day time so I got to see how shockingly dirty this place really is. The walls are cover in splattered food, the carpets are grimy, they are no longer red but black/brown from dirt. The seats are sticky and have food and dirt between the cushions. The arms of the chairs were filthy and sticky. I don't think they've ever been cleaned. OMG, yuck!!!! When I went to use the bathroom, I saw how dirty the door was and how dirty the hallway is. Greedy management 11 days before for Mother's Day, I made reservations and mentioned that I had the Bloomspot certificate which was good for up to $88 value for two people. The man who took our reservations assured me that they would take us on Mother's day with the certificate. When my friend and I got there at noon, we were the only customers in the restaurant. An old Indian woman in a sari, Harveen, came from the kitchens to greet us. She was nice enough until she discovered we were using the certificate. She didn't show us to our table. Instead she said we can't use the certificate. I told her that I specifically mentioned the certificate when making ther eservation and asked to speak with the man who took our reservations. She said, it doesn't matter what the man said, she was not letting us use the certificate because they had a "special" Mother's Day buffet spread for that Sunday. She said we can still stay for lunch but pay the cost of $25 for the buffet which includes the mimosas. Their regular lunch buffet was $15. Now this didn't make sense, the value of the certificate for 2 people was for up to $88 which also includes buffet and mimosas. But our $88 certificate was not good enough for their $25/person "special" buffet? So basically, they inflated the price of the brunch buffet when they offered it on Bloomspot, so the discount wasn't that great to begin with. PLUS, they wouldn't honor a reservation I made with them which embarassed me in front of my friend. Eventhough Harveen offered to honor the certificate any other day even if it's past the expiration date, I don't think I'll ever give her establishment my business and would like to make sure everyone know what greedy people these are. read more

I drove from San Fran and decided to have some Indian food. I called ahead to get directions when I couldn't find the place about 35 minutes before closing and 5 minutes later when I called again after her directions fell short on which side of the intersection they were on the manager of the place told me the kitchen has closed and they did not expect me to be coming by. Why wasn't I told this when I first called? And why was it assumed that I wouldn't be coming by after getting directions??! I guess she just wanted to get home early and forgot her lessons on customer service. Terrible experience before I even got there. I would not recommend anyone going to a place where they have no idea that a business runs mostly on customer experience. A solution would have been to persuade me to order a take away instead of leaving me stranded and arguing with me about whether I was really coming or not. 100% dissatisfied customer. read more

We ordered several dishes (including double orders of each dish) for a special family occasion & spent a few hundred dollars - ALL the dishes tasted terrible: The curry chicken & carrot halva were tasteless & too oily; the kheer (rice pudding) was tasteless, watery (vs. milky), & rice undercooked; the lamb kebabs were tasteless, undercooked, & with red color additive; & the daal was tasteless, but the only dish that was edible. Hence, I decided to provide my feedback to the owners (Deep & Harveen Sethi) - I've never experienced such disregard / disrespect of my feedback, as a customer. I was shocked by the owner's arrogant / rude behavior. I've been to this restaurant for years and on a whim decided to look up the yelp reviews and was shocked to find it only has 3 stars. I consider this the best Indian food restaurant in Los Angeles! It has the freshest ingredients and their spices are perfectly balanced. They specialize in northern Indian cuisine, offer a full bar, the service is impeccable (courteous, they are there when you need them, they leave you alone when you don't). The decor is elegant and understated. Nothing flash. Where can I start? The rice is airy, aromatic and delicate, a perfect balance to the rest of the dishes. The Palak Paneer tastes of spinach (many make hours ahead but at BP it just tastes vibrant). The fish vindaloo is outstanding. They are not afraid to make it spicy yet not so spicy that you don't taste the ingredients. The chicken tikka masala has the right amount of sauce yet not overbearing, allowing the chicken to impart its flavor. The naan is crispy yet moist, with just enough char on it to give it more flavor but not too much so as to overpower the dishes. They play lovely Indian music that makes me feel like I'm back in India... with a western twist and on the soft side so that it's not a distraction. Bombay Palace is just a solid and classy restaurant. What more could one ask for? read more

I wish I could leave zero stars. I didn't like a single thing about this restaurant except for the ambience. The waiters had to be asked multiple times to fill up our waters. And when they came they had an attitude. The owners (husband and wife team) were very arrogant and condescending. I asked if they do anything for my father-in-laws birthday and she rudely said "yes you buy a dessert and we stick a candle on it". As a business owner that is no way to talk to your customers. The portion sizes are incredibly small and the prices are exorbitant. I would not waste my money here ever again. There are many other Indian restaurants in Los Angeles that I would go to before ever coming back to this one. I ate like a queen here. Which was totally unexpected, since I was eating family-style with 4 omnivores, but we all managed to have the best Indian meal any of us has ever had in Los Angeles. I don't know everything we ordered, but I enjoyed roti, yellow dal, chana peshawari, and baingan bharta. I absolutely, whole heartedly, recommend all of those dishes for a full-on vegan Indian FEAST. They were all excellent and meshed well together - important when you're eating with your hands and mixing this with that. We ordered everything spicy, and wow, it packed some flavor! There was still balance, though - nothing was SO spicy that you couldn't enjoy the food, just enough to enhance it (and maybe cry a little). Our server was good. While not particularly warm, she knew what was vegan, how much bread would be too much, and whether we ordered enough food. And wouldn't you know, barely anything was leftover and we were all stuffed. The prices aren't terrible. I think it came out to be $20/person, for amazing food in a lovely restaurant. I've found that the "less than 5 star" reviews are very inaccurate. The portions are decent sized, the quality is very high, and the prices are no different than any other Indian restaurant I've been to. My wife and I had an amazingly good meal and the service was impeccable. The lamb chops were the best I've ever had. We live some 20 miles south of the restaurant but will happily make the drive whenever we get a hankering for Indian food. Now let me tell you about this place I have not been here in years. But when I ordered from here they charge for everything. Entree one price. You want Naan they will charge you for that. You need rice for your meal. Fork out the$$$. They probably would rent you the forks if they could. But I bet there is some CA restaurant regulation that prevents them from doing so.
